John Babson ’63 John reports, “Since the 4th grade, I struggled with severe dyslexia in a class of 31 students where my grades hovered between D- and E. Both parents were type A personalities, and I was their first born. During my 8th-grade year, they had a conference with the principal who shocked them with his educational opinion that I did not have the aptitude to make it through high school. My father took out a second mortgage on our home. My first year at Rectory, I repeated the 7th grade in classes half the size of my previous school. Rectory became the means by which I graduated from a private Vermont high school in four years, then four years from Hillsdale College in Michigan with a double major, and graduating in 1975 with a master’s degree from a Massachusetts graduate school. “Those achievements were the direct result of Rectory’s standards for student affirmation in the classroom, afternoon sports, caring teachers who became friends, dining hall interactions, dorm life, and intra-school black & orange competition. Those factors all worked together for my good and a future career of 40+ years.”
