GOING BOLDLY INTO THE NEXT CENTURY

Throughout the two years of our Centennial Celebration (expanded due to the COVID-19 pandemic), we reflected on Rectory’s founding, the first hundred years, and the School’s growth along the way.

With the centennial celebration behind us, we now look toward the next hundred years and our endeavor to “go boldly into the next century.”

Regarding the founding of the School, Mrs. Bigelow wrote in 1936, “We felt that with our love for children and intense desire to help them, we could start such a school and make it a place where boys would be happy.

Our ideals were always to work with the individual boy that he might become better adjusted emotionally and educationally.”

If we replaced “boys” with “boys and girls,” that reflection still holds today. It also sets the stage for two series of articles on Rectory’s intentional, personalized student experience (pages 4-6) and Rectory’s continued commitment to gender equity (pages 7-9). >>>

School administrators put a lot of thought and effort into developing an intentional student experience that, in the end, may look different for each student. The student experience is considered with a 360° lens. At every point in each student’s journey, Rectory students have the tools available to build a foundation of skills to succeed in life. Space and Curricular Design

“When thinking about the future of Rectory’s academic program, we focus on the students’ experience,” said Director of Academics Lisa Hart.

“This includes curriculum design but also the smaller details like the classroom layout, the paint color on the walls, and the furniture students use. When we create or update our curriculum, we think about the scope and sequence of the curriculum. We intentionally focus on building skills from one grade to the next to ensure students’ growth.”

The wall colors in the classrooms and hallways were a deliberate choice because colors impact students’ emotions and mindsets. Furniture for spaces is determined by how teachers use it; it can be put together for groups or pulled apart for individual use—even in the library. The Hale Elementary Wing in John and Millie Green Hall was designed by New England Design after receiving input from the elementary faculty on how the spaces were used by the children.

The intention was to create warm and inviting gathering spaces for collaboration in the lobby and hallways. According to Director of Elementary Maria Carpenter, “The vision was always to design a collection of nature-inspired classrooms near each other so that children can explore and learn in community while supporting each other.”

Student schedules and curriculum at Rectory center around 21st-century teaching and brainbased learning. In 2015, Rectory introduced a new middle school schedule that meets the needs of an increasingly sophisticated, rigorous, and dynamic curriculum. The intentionality between how we build the programs and the spaces that surround our students is powerful.

Achievement For All Learners

“Our two children, whose interests and personalities are vastly different from each other, both feel a deep sense of belonging within the Rectory family. They feel challenged, uplifted, cared for, and valued by their teachers and classmates,” said Alyssa & Hal Walker P’25, ‘27.

At Rectory, our students are expected to immerse themselves in our broad programmatic offerings, which provide essential opportunities to develop critical academic and life skills. Whether in English class, the art studio, the science lab, or our outdoor environment, students are guided by experienced professionals who strive for engagement, encourage creativity and critical thinking, and promote communication

and collaboration. Our instructional approach leverages the power of technology as a teaching and learning tool, and children are taught how to use these resources responsibly and safely.

Students in middle school need a unique approach to academic learning and social/ emotional growth. Because each student has different needs and interests, a cookie-cutter approach isn’t effective. Rectory moved to a more personalized approach, placing students in classes that meet their specific capabilities, unlike the typical middle school placement experience where students travel together in their English, history, and science classes. This method works whether a student is neurodiverse, highachieving, or twice-exceptional and incorporates appropriate rigor to reach their potential.

Professional Development and Faculty Collaboration

“To support student achievement through the curriculum, it’s important to support faculty professional development and connections to develop opportunities for cross-curricular studies.

Our faculty are learners too. We host on-site professional development opportunities, bringing in top experts in their field, and we send our faculty to regional and national conferences.

Finding time for faculty to collaborate and design curriculum across disciplines is a challenge, which is why building in time for professional development and collaboration across the year is so important,” said Mrs. Hart.

Rectory’s academic philosophy is focused on student engagement. Professional development 5

for faculty is critical to improving our students’ learning experience, and it is also very intentional.

According to Mrs. Hart, before the pandemic, the committee for academic excellence (CAE) also started hosting faculty luncheons as a more casual way to provide opportunities for those cross-curricular discussions. While these luncheons were suspended due to the pandemic, this year, monthly faculty luncheons have already been added to the schedule. “We are very strategic in our planning and how we support faculty growth and how that, in turn, supports the curriculum and the students’ learning,” said Mrs. Hart.

To ensure the student experience is considered through that 360° lens, the dean of students position was reinstituted this academic year to work directly with the students to anticipate and respond to their needs.

Opportunities to develop self-advocacy and selfefficacy are embedded in our students’ schedules.

Skill Block, a once-weekly class, is designed to foster organizational and effective study habits and is an opportunity for students to hone their academic skills. Students also are provided with Enrichment blocks twice a week; this is time set aside for students to meet with teachers to clarify classroom content and learn to advocate for themselves.

Student support goes far beyond what happens in the classroom. Sometimes the best relationships are formed and the most helpful learning is realized when you go beyond academics!

Rectory counselors have extensive experience supporting adolescents as they navigate what can frequently be a challenging time developmentally.

It is an invaluable opportunity for students to talk with a trusted adult about their day or about the challenges they may be experiencing in the classroom and in their peer relationships. Guiding students through these challenges is one way that Rectory builds strong, independent learners and happy and healthy young men and women.

These programs have included blacksmithing, shark dissection, celestial navigation with a sextant, and many more.

Student Choice: Creating an experience that is unique for each student

“We’re making a conscientious effort to provide more opportunities for our students,” said Head of School Fred Williams. “The breadth of our programs is exceptional. When you combine our academics, athletics, and arts offerings, students can pursue existing interests and develop new ones.”

Especially beginning in middle school at Rectory, students can make personal choices with arts, electives, athletics, and MELP. Additional choices are available as students progress through their middle school years, including in their academic courses. By the time students reach the ninth-grade year, they have opportunities only available to them; there are ninth-grade-only MELP options, they choose their related-arts courses and can take an online world language class. High-achieving students in the ninth grade can also take honors courses and participate in the Bigelow Scholars program, which allows select students to take an additional course rather than a study hall.

A Safe Space to learn and try new things

“Safety is important for all of our families, and that means a lot of different things,” said Director of Enrollment Lesley Gibbs. “Safety at Rectory doesn’t only mean physical safety; it means that students feel comfortable trying new things and

knowing that the adults around them will support them along the way.”

Rectory has a Safety Committee made up of school administrators and faculty. The charge of the Safety Committee is to develop and oversee the implementation of a comprehensive school safety plan relevant to the needs and resources of Rectory School.

Safety at Rectory goes beyond the physical and includes respect for people and property and the ability to receive help when needed, whether mental, social, emotional, or physical.

We establish an environment of trust; there are no locks on dorm-room doors, and there are open cubbies in the academic building instead of lockers. Perhaps most importantly, students at Rectory are encouraged to take advantage of the breadth of offerings available to them and try something new. When students talk about their time at Rectory, they often reflect on those things they had never done before and the new passions they developed here.

At Rectory, students are at the center of everything we do. Creating a meaningful experience for each of our students is a top priority. The people at Rectory look at that experience from every angle and make intentional decisions based on the needs of each child. With the construction of a new female dormitory and the renovation of the girls’ locker room this year, Rectory School continues its commitment to gender equity, an initiative that was greatly advanced in 2007 with the inclusion of female boarders. In this series of articles, members of the Rectory community will discuss the transition to co-educational boarding, reflecting on the factors that inspired it and the impact it has had on our school. Looking toward the future, they will also consider what more can be done to ensure equal footing for our female students.

While it may have had the reputation of an all-boys school, Rectory has, in fact, had girl day students right from the start. Indeed, the student directory from the school’s second year listed two girls, Ruth Palmer and Florence Grosvenor. Throughout the years that followed, female day students, while significantly fewer in number compared to boys, contributed much to our school community— holding their own among the boys as much on the sports field as in the classroom—even though they had to leave the campus at the school day’s end.

All that changed in 2007 when Rectory’s administration, under the leadership of thenHead of School Tom Army, chose to include girl boarders for the very first time in the school’s history. And while this certainly necessitated some careful consideration and reconfiguration, the addition of female boarders wasn’t a complete sea change. Indeed, Assistant Head of School Glenn Ames recalled a seamless transition. “We 8

had always allowed girl day students,” he said, “so itAT wasn’t a chasm-deep RECTORY SCHOOLleap.” Rather, it was an open acknowledgment of the strong female presence the school has always had since Mabel Bigelow was headmistress and co-founder.

But that doesn’t mean the switch to coeducational boarding was effortless or without resistance. Board Member Elizabeth Zimmermann ‘84, one of only nine female day students in her graduating class, recalled her frequent banter with then-Head John Green. “I would say to him, ‘When are we going to have girl boarders, come on?’ And he would adamantly say, ‘There will never be girl boarders at Rectory School.’ That was just the culture at the time. Rectory’s primary mission was as a boys’ boarding school.”

And while Ms. Zimmermann recalled a feeling of imbalance—less so in the classroom than on the sports field and in other aspects of student life—she

still felt that the culture was quite positive. Alumna and former tutor Claudia Abbott ‘60, who was the lone girl in her graduating class, also has many fond memories of those days. “I wasn’t cognizant of [being one of only a few girls] at the age of five. For me, [the boys] were just my friends. My nickname was Rough Tough Cream Puff. We had competitions in class over who would get the higher grade. The relationships that I had, they were very important to me.” That said, Mrs. Abbott did express some frustration. “Since I had to play two roles in the play Androcles and the Lion, one as a shrew and the other as the sweet Lavinia,” she said, “it would have been nice to have another girl around.”

At the turn of the millennium, others at Rectory School also began to feel that it was high time to have more girls around.

Director of Enrollment Lesley Gibbs remembered many conversations on the topic, as well as a clear

market demand. “There were ten junior boarding schools,” she said. “There were a couple that were all boys, but there were none that were all girls. So there was always this market for girls out there.”

Kerri Nagle, who was assistant director of admissions at the time, agreed. “Part of the decision to do it was that there weren’t a lot of schools that allowed girl boarders,” she said.

“There were not a lot of choices for girls, and that population was not being served.”

According to Mr. Ames, this increased demand for female boarding options coincided with an overall drop in students, as many new independent schools began to open up in areas from where Rectory had historically drawn. This made the financial incentive an important motivating factor.

Said Mr. Ames, it was less a question of whether the school should make the change, “and a lot more of, ‘Okay, how do we make it work?’”

Some, however, did raise objections, much of it related to longstanding Rectory tradition.

“Change is always difficult,” said Head of School Fred Williams, “and the new can always be fearful. After all, you’re going against what had been decades and decades of tradition.”

“People just get really attached to and have fond feelings for the way it was,” Ms. Zimmermann agreed.

“Some of the most important folks in the history of the school have been women.” -Fred Williams, Head of School

Others’ concerns had to do with managing the mix of genders.

“If we have girls and boys boarding, what’s going to happen?” Mrs. Gibbs said, recalling some of the fears expressed at the time. “Are they going to be sneaking out of dorms? Are there going to be more things to worry about, like relationships and having to oversee that?”

Mr. Williams said he understands such concerns.

“For kids this age, we are their mothers and fathers in absentia to their own parents. And, oh, my gosh, I never want anything to happen on my watch,” he said. “I’m sure that many of the adults feel the same way. So to create the setting with middle schoolers in a co-ed boarding situation, sure, it would cause a little bit of concern. But we were well prepared to do this safely and successfully.”

And as the discussions continued, it became clear that the benefits to the school greatly outweighed such concerns and potential negatives.

According to Mrs. Gibbs, many at the time were excited to have a stronger female perspective in classes and on campus.

And much of the alumni was enthusiastic. Said Freddy Nagle, director of development, “When this happened, I remember alums saying, ‘It’s about time’ and ‘It’s a great thing for Rectory.’”

“One senior faculty member, who is now retired, said that he wasn’t sure about this decision when it was made,” said Mr. Williams. “But since then, he feels it was in the best interests of the school.

He believes that having the girls here has raised the intellectual level on campus, and I would completely agree with that.”

“Thinking back to when the decision was made, I don’t remember any negatives about adding girl boarders to our campus,” said Maria Carpenter, director of elementary. “From all the different constituents and departments, it was always seen as a positive move forward for Rectory. And it’s created an opportunity for us to be really

strong in our foundation, which may not have been as strong if we remained a boarding school only for boys.”

In future installments of this series, we’ll take a look at the first years of female boarding at Rectory, at the physical and programmatic changes now being implemented to accommodate the female population, and at the work still to do. designing their experience: arts at rectory

Visitors to the Rectory campus won’t have to look too hard to find examples of our students’ creativity. The first step into the Admissions entrance leads visitors to a beautiful display of ceramic sculptures and three-dimensional art pieces. The walk down the hallway introduces them to various art pieces hanging on the walls, from drawing and painting to glass mosaics and black and white photography. That same hallway gets one closer to the musical sounds echoing from the P.Y. and Kinmay Tang Performing Arts Center, where any of the ten (plus) musical groups are practicing on the stage

and in the rooms. Along the walk, one might bump into a few students filming a scene for their digital arts class in the hallway or taking photos for the yearbook. Oh, and watch your step near the stage of the Tang, as props and set pieces are being designed and created by students for the upcoming production of the school play. On a nice day, one might pass by students practicing guitar or djembe drums outside on the Seaward Family Student Pavillion.

And that only begins the campus tour as we approach the Collins Art Barn, where the visual arts really take shape.

At Rectory School, there is something for everyone in the visual and performing arts.

The program aims to provide students a safe place to try new artistic experiences, develop and hone their craft, and share their creative expressions with others in the Rectory School community and beyond. Our talented group of teachers provides classes, electives, and other programs ranging from the beginner to the more advanced level. There is something for everyone. Because we believe that students don’t know what they will enjoy until they give it a try, we have several built-in required classes

and experiences for students, such as beginning band and one term of 5th-grade chorus. As students progress through the grade levels, we offer a more comprehensive range of visual and performing arts choices, including printmaking, ceramics, wood shop, ukulele, acting, ocarina, world drumming, and digital media. This balance of required courses and courses of choice provides students with a foundation and some ownership of their learning. This program philosophy has led to some wonderful surprises within our community, such as seeing a varsity basketball player take on the lead role in the

spring musical or discovering that one of our top academic scholars is also an excellent painter.

While we are always impressed with the students who come to Rectory with little artistic or musical experience and develop a new talent, we are equally excited to support our already accomplished musicians and artists through advanced ensembles and classes in the arts. It gives us great pride to take our student musicians to local and regional music competitions and festivals, such as the Quinebaug Valley Middle School Music Festival

and the Eastern Region Festival, and to submit the work of our student artists in the Scholastic Art Competition and the Providence Children’s Film Festival. Students at Rectory are excited about their creative endeavors, and the support and guidance they receive from our talented faculty enable them to take the initiative and help design their journey.

The sky’s the limit in the Arts program at Rectory School, and we certainly see many shining stars in that bright sky!

Rectory Athletics, where students connect outside the classroom, creating memories they will carry with them, was officially back for the 2021-2022 school year. After over a year of unpredictable change and minimal activities, sports seemed as close to normal as ever. From the sounds of chatter in the locker room to the rhythm of feet running across our fields and gyms, student athletes flooded the playing fields for a new year.

fall sports The symbolic colors of Rectory fit right into the Autumn colors around campus. Students

covered in orange and black took the field for their first competitions since the winter of 2019. The sports lineup included boys and girls soccer, girls volleyball, cross country, fall adventures, equestrian, and fitness. Our competing teams, cross country, soccer, and volleyball, had a full slate of games. Each team worked hard to build on their skills and team chemistry to outplay their opponents for when it was game time. After over a year of no games, teams looked at it as a rebuilding year. Coach Bradley of the girls soccer team said, “Having something to work towards again made practices fun.” The fitness program tested athletes on the 800-meter run, maximum 2-minute row, and their burpee endurance with other functional fitness movements. The girls volleyball team had the most successful season of the fall. They went undefeated against their opponents, thanks to 9th-grade returners Olivia C., Jaceil B., Moran L., Lucy Z., Chana K., Elaine D., and Diana H.

2021-2022 ATHLETICS

WINTER sports The crisp air soon turned to bitter cold, and winter sports had arrived. Boys and girls basketball,

fencing, fitness, hockey, squash, swimming, and winter warriors made up the winter sports offerings at Rectory. Daily activity was vibrant onand off-campus, with students traveling to and from facilities like the Hale YMCA and Jahn Rink. Boys and girls basketball had six teams, including a co-ed recreational team. With the JV teams focusing on fundamentals, the varsity teams fine-tuned team strategy. In the same spot as fall sports, not competing in over a year, the state of competition was unknown. The swim and squash teams had returning swimmers, but most of the roster was new. That did not hold them back from having successful seasons. Swimming and squash went undefeated. Jaceil B., Martin L., and Joba S. contributed to the swim team’s overall success. Jacky W., Clement W., Diana H., and Taylor W. were some of the squash team’s top players this year, leading them to their second undefeated season in the last three years. The boys varsity A basketball team also had a successful season. Although they did not go undefeated, the team won the title at the Future Stars Tournament at the season’s end. They met Fessenden in the final game, which has happened often, and they were able to secure the championship. Rectory’s hockey team joined the Rumsey Hall Tournament this year, and although they did not return with any hardware, the memories they created as a team were just as valuable.

spring sports As the sun’s warmth grew more potent, it was a sign that Spring sports were beginning.

Our softball, baseball, golf, track and field, tennis, and lacrosse teams were eager to get back outside and start preparing for their season.

This year, a prominent attraction was the Cenntenial Weekend, which brought friends, family, and alumni onto campus to celebrate 100 years of Rectory. It included a cookout for everyone to enjoy before athletes showcased their athletic talent on the fields. The pride of Rectory filled the campus as cheers broke out in support of the Wolves. Later in the season, girls lacrosse played in the Rumsey Hall Jamboree, where Zoe O. and Rebecca D. took home the Player of the Day awards for their offensive and defensive performances. For the first time in a long time, the tennis team had an undefeated regular season, going 9-0 and winning the Wheelers Double Tournament. They played a mixture of day schools, boarding schools, junior varsity, and varsity teams. When reflecting on the season, Coach Campbell said, “We had a large number of talented players on the team this year, and I am really proud of all of them.” Boys lacrosse, baseball, and tennis all attended the end-of-season Fessenden Tournament for their respective sport. Although none were crowned champions, it was a day where teams came together to give their best effort one last time before the season ended.

The hustle and bustle of getting to and from practices and games returned.

It allowed students to form relationships outside the classroom, to hold each other accountable, motivate one another, and support each other in failures and successes. Students wore their Rectory jerseys proudly and were resilient in times of challenge. The silence of uncertainty in sports was gone and replaced with team huddles proudly yelling “Wolves!” once again.

campus recap community service elective Members of the community service elective spent the fall focused on how to support families in need through regional service organizations in Northeast Connecticut. Their hard work supported the Putnam Family Resources Center, TEEG, and United Services with grocery store gift cards, fleece hats to help keep children warm, bags filled with everyday necessities, and some fun surprises.

ccmc pj day On December 10, 2022, Rectory School participated in Connecticut Children’s Medical Center’s 11th Annual PJ Day for the Kids to raise money for the hospital’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. Thank you to Hadly H. ’26 for educating our community on the day’s significance and encouraging the entire school to participate in the state-wide event that raised $657,005.

fourth-grade technology class The new fourth-grade technology class was a hit with the students, who were thrilled to take advantage of Rectory’s innovation lab. The class taught the basics, including using Google Suite to find the most effective way to search age-appropriate sites for project research and introduced more advanced concepts, such as creating circuits and developing functional code. Students enjoyed learning about 3D printers and how middle schoolers use the green screen and Mac desktop computers.

32 mlk day of service Early on Monday, January 17, the Rectory community gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through education, listening, and community service. Middle school students, faculty, and staff split into groups and scattered into the community to solicit nonperishable donations for TEEG (Thompson Ecumenical Empowerment Group), provide musical entertainment to the residents of Country Living at Westview Commons, and assist with cleanup at the Pomfret Fire Department. They also participated in several campus-based cleanup projects, including creating 750 Valentine’s Day cards and cupcakes to be distributed to TVCCA Meals on Wheels clients, painting dorm stairwells, organizing the athletic uniform closet, and restoring the blazes on the red and blue trails. Members of the elementary school made 32 colorful fleece knotted blankets to give to nursing homes and TEEG. They also held a Krispy Kreme fundraiser with all profits supporting the Porcupine School from the Lakota Nation for grades K-8.

winter break on campus Students who could not return home for winter break because of the pandemic were invited to stay on campus. They enjoyed some much-needed downtime, family-style activities, and off-campus events. shield promotes dei theme Through personal experiences and thoughtful discussions, Rectory’s Student Happiness, Inclusion, Equity, Leadership, and Differences (SHIELD) group promoted this year’s theme, “Rectory Is Differences.” Student-led activities and presentations focused on the importance of language and its use to express opinions, thoughts, and emotions. The Rectory community continues to live the SHIELD mission: to promote equity and justice, educate and inspire, and confront and correct biases to lift one another up.

kellogg awards The Kellogg Award, established in 1993 by Rectory alumnus Peter Kellogg ‘57 in honor of his mother, Mrs. James Crane Kellogg III, recognizes Rectory employees for their dedication and commitment to Rectory School. Each year, two employees are selected to receive this award because of their many years of service and special help to the school and students. On March 2, 2022, Mr. Williams announced the two 2022 recipients: Evan Campbell and Melissa Zahansky. elementary school aquarium visit During the winter term, students in the K-1 classroom studied penguins through art, music, reading, and research. With the ability to resume off-campus field trips, the class visited the New England Aquarium in Boston, where they observed more than 60 rockhopper and African penguins before exploring the other exhibits.

excerpted from fred williams’ speech at rectory’s graduation ceremony The purpose of Rectory’s graduating ceremonies is to acknowledge the accomplishments of our “seniors” and to formally mark the successful completion of their Rectory course of study.

The transcripts, peppered with high effort and achievement grades consistent with this lot, tell the story of academic progress. They are a studious group. In fact, they include the first-ever cohort of Bigelow Scholars. This pilot program, which afforded select students an option to take an additional course rather than a study hall, provided a valuable alternative in Rectory’s efforts to challenge all learners. Most who were given the opportunity accepted the offer, and their positive experience set the stage for an expanded version of this program in the year to come. This class is also the first to be offered an honors physics experience, a course that joins the likes of Spanish 2, computer science 3, honors English, and pre-calculus in assuring academic rigor across all disciplines.

It is refreshing, though, that Rectory is comprised of a range of learners. We have among us those who have worked extremely hard to bring their studies more in line with their peers, and we are equally proud of this group. School, and life, are about progress, not perfection. And all of you, members of the Class of 2022, have demonstrated invaluable progress, a pattern that must continue for you to enjoy fully the lives of promise and purpose that await.

Your intellectual appetite, Class of 2022, has only been matched by your willingness to experiment and try new things. In fact, this has been one of the greatest opportunities afforded you these past years.

Growth occurs through courageous, responsible experimentation, a belief you have embraced.

Athletically, many of you tried new sports. MELP, too, offered first-time experiences for you. Whether kayaking in the Everglades, rappelling or sand surfing in Utah, or stepping off a platform onto a half-mile-long zip line as we did in North Carolina, unique learning opportunities abounded, and you took full advantage of them.

Athletically, led by members of the Class of 2022, our Rectory Wolves added four undefeated team plaques to the hallway in Colhoun Gymnasium—volleyball in the fall, swimming and squash in the winter, and tennis in the spring. The talent these teams possessed and the consistency they demonstrated made for record-setting seasons. That said, one might argue that

the highest praise I received for our Rectory athletes came in a loss at the Fessenden lacrosse tournament.

After watching their team defeat our Wolves squad a fellow head of school sent me an email that read, “While at the tournament, I was so impressed with the way the Rectory team conducted themselves...

They represented Rectory very well.” The email went on to comment on the actions of one athlete in particular who, this head of school stated, “...was really positive and left an amazing impression on all of us. After leading your team, he went on to cheer the successes of other teams and players.” I like to win—a lot—but victory, as our Rectory teams proved, should not come at all costs, and the actions of one individual can set the lead for all others to follow. This is true for the varsity star to the intramural novice.

Time is a great revealer...as you assess Rectory’s role in your life, graduates, and in another very important way as noted around a North Carolinian campfire this past MELP. At the end of a most enjoyable evening with Freeman Owle, a member of the Cherokee nation, a Rectory student asked Mr. Owle what words of advice he might want to share. Mr. Owle paused and then proceeded to mention lichen, a very innocent-looking plant-like organism often found attached to rocks. This harmless plant, Mr. Owle commented, actually secretes a substance that over time etches the surface of the rock leaving an impression that will last for centuries. Just like the lichen, Mr. Owle commented, you, too, even in the face of a seemingly impenetrable surface, will leave an impression. And that impression will only become more defined over time.

Graduates, if I asked you to write an essay today detailing what you learned across your time at Rectory, you might immediately jump to course content, musical progress, and sports skills. All understandable answers. I am curious, however, how you would respond to the same question ten or twenty years from now. Earlier, graduates, I mentioned that the purpose of this graduation is to note your successful completion of Rectory’s course of study; however, the impact of your time at our school will not be fully realized for some years to come. Time causes us to gain perspective, and my sense—in fact, my hope—is that your wizened responses a decade or two hence would reflect on more abstract concepts such as an increased understanding of self, the courage and curiosity to try new things, the ability to collaborate with others, and the personal interests and passions you developed.

Graduates, your impression at this point in your life is but partially formed. Take full advantage in the years ahead to assure that as the marks deepen and become permanent they convey the curiosity, courage, intellect, compassion, and kindness you have displayed with us.

That will clearly convey a life well-lived.

We have complete faith, Class of 2022, you will fully embrace this challenge, and we will follow your success with interest and pride.

more than 100 people gathered in the p.y. and kinmay tang performing arts center on saturday, april 23, to attend the 2022 alumni awards.

Fred Williams hosted the event, which recognized those members of the Rectory community, as nominated by their peers and affirmed by school administration, whose contributions to Rectory school and the greater community in regard to service, sport, or leadership have left a lasting impression on our campus and students. The Distinguished Service Award, an acknowledgment of an individual’s exceptional commitment to supporting Rectory’s ongoing mission, was presented to Peter ’67 and Nathaniel ’98 Hamilton and Jay Milnor, Past Trustee. Two legendary Rectory athletes, Rory Burke ’60 and Terrence Clarke ’18, were enshrined on Rectory’s Athletic Wall of Honor.

Madeleine Hutchins ’11 earned the Emerging Leader Award, presented annually to a Rectory alumnus/a who has exhibited great potential for positively influencing others in the early stages of their young adult life.

The ceremony began with the Athletic Wall of Honor inductions. Rory Burke, retired and living in Florida, attended the ceremony via Zoom. Fred Williams presented the case for Mr. Burke’s induction by quoting sports recaps from issues of The Rectory News from the late 1950s. Mr. Burke’s peers described him as unquestionably the best athlete in any arena in which he stepped foot. A three-sport star and captain at Rectory, Mr. Burke racked up impressive statistics on the football field, the hockey rink, and in track and field. Rob Perkin ’62, who nominated Mr. Burke, was on hand in person and presented the award to his Rectory contemporary.

Mr. Perkin commented that some of Mr. Burke’s athletic feats remained among the most impressive things he had ever seen. After congratulating his old friend, Mr. Perkin handed the podium back to Mr. Williams who introduced the induction of Terrence Clarke.

Mr. Clarke attended Rectory for one year as an eighth grader. His potential for greatness on the basketball court was apparent right away, and his embrace of the Rectory community and his fellow students made a lasting impact on the students and adults around him. After Rectory, Mr. Clarke remained on the path toward playing basketball professionally, enrolling at the University of Kentucky where he played for one year before earning an invitation to the NBA draft. Mr. Clarke’s life was cut short tragically in an automobile accident days before the draft, which made his induction a bittersweet moment. Mr. Clarke’s Rectory coach, Brad Seaward, spoke about his relationship with Mr. Clarke and described him as a once-in-a-career player who made everyone around him better, both on and off the court. Coach Seaward presented an Athletic Wall of Honor plaque to Mr. Clarke’s mother, who was

in attendance along with many of Mr. Clarke’s family members and friends.

Next, Maddy Hutchins received the Emerging Leader Award. Mr. Williams gave a brief introduction that included several of Ms. Hutchins’ Rectory School highlights. Those highlights included Ms. Hutchins’ achieving at a high level in the classroom, a valuable contributor to the equestrian and fencing teams, and a standout musician and performer. Her many and varied interests, all of which she engaged in passionately, earned her the title of “Most Unique,” as determined by her Class of 2011 peers. More recently, Ms. Hutchins has remained connected with Rectory by sharing her story with current students, most notably at the 2022 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Assembly.

In addition to her service to Rectory School, Ms. Hutchins continues to inspire others within her many personal and professional pursuits.

Mr. Williams and Ms. Hutchins sat next to one another on the Tang stage, and Ms. Hutchins responded to Mr. Williams’ questions about the nature of her life and work. Ms. Hutchins mentioned two characteristics with which she identifies most strongly: storyteller and scholar. Drawing from her membership in the Mohegan Tribe, Ms. Hutchins values the role storytelling plays in connecting history with the present. Stories help to engage people in history in a way that brings it to life. Ms. Hutchins’ interest in theater and the arts remains a part of her life through the support of Native American theater projects as well as her own short fiction writing.

Reflecting on her philosophy major in college, Ms. Hutchins cited the broad range of disciplines it exposed her to. Similar to how her interests at Rectory were varied, philosophy allowed her to build a foundation from which to approach life’s questions and puzzles with the same focus and curiosity she exhibited as a younger student. Ms. Hutchins reflected in particular on advice given to her by one of her professors at Yale who suggested that when seeking direction in life to look for the “intersection of what you like, what you are good at, and what the world needs.”

The final awards conferred were the Distinguished Service Awards. The 2022 honorees were father-and-son alumni and Trustees Peter and Nathaniel Hamilton and long-time Pomfret resident and Rectory supporter Jay Milnor. Mr. Williams described each recipient’s service to our school before presenting each with a commemorative

clock. The Hamiltons have enjoyed similar trajectories in their relationships with Rectory School. Peter was a student in the 1960s and was highly regarded by the faculty as a diligent, neat, and dependable student. He answered the call some time after his Rectory years to serve on the Board of Trustees and helped facilitate tremendous growth of the school’s physical plant. During his tenure, new dorms, faculty housing, student centers, and athletic spaces were added, and Peter’s willingness to support the efforts himself while encouraging others to do so as well were pivotal to Rectory’s many advances.

One generation later, Nathaniel was a student in the 1990s who held numerous leadership positions on campus, including proctor and head waiter. Some time after his Rectory days, Mr. Williams asked Nathaniel to serve on the Board of Trustees. During his tenure, the school renovated Memorial dorm, added faculty housing, constructed Green Hall, added the Seaward Family Pavilion, and in the coming year will complete the construction of a new dorm. The impact of the Hamilton family at Rectory School is immeasurable, and it is only the beginning of their distinguished service. They have passed down values of community and cooperation from generation to generation so that they can share their gifts to enrich the lives of those around them. Mr. Milnor’s influence has been felt across generations as well, and that is because he has spent most of his 98 years in service to others. He served our country with distinction in World War II, often volunteering to take on missions above and beyond his call of duty. He arrived to Rectory school in 1948 and quickly connected with John Bigelow. The two enjoyed a great relationship as both colleagues and friends. Mr. Bigelow’s mentorship helped Mr. Milnor earn his first engagement as a head of school, and some years down the road, Mr. Milnor returned to town to lead Pomfret School next door. It was during that time that Mr. Milnor began a long tenure on Rectory’s Board of Trustees, and his visionary leadership and inclusive outlook were lauded by all who had the pleasure of working with him. Mr. Milnor attended the ceremony virtually, and his son, Scott, accepted the award on his behalf. He communicated how much Rectory and service to others in general have meant to Mr. Milnor throughout his life.

The ceremony concluded with remarks by Mr. Williams, and guests moved on to the Centennial Gala. It was with great pleasure that Rectory honored such an illustrious group of alumni, Trustees, and friends, and we look forward to what we hope will be another exceptional class in 2023.

alumni events eighth-grade leadership luncheon

After a two-year hiatus, Rectory held an in-person Eighth-Grade Leadership Luncheon on June 2, 2022, the last academic day of the school year. The entire Class of 2023 and many of their parents, grandparents, and families gathered, along with a solid contingent of Rectory faculty and staff, to celebrate the end of the school year and look forward to what lay ahead. Head of School Fred Williams welcomed everyone to the Dining Hall and explained the purpose of the event, which was twofold: to recognize those eighth-grade students moving on to secondary schools next year and to inspire those students, the majority of the class, who planned to return to Rectory for their ninth-grade year. Mr. Williams praised the class for their hard work in the classroom and during activities and commended them for rising to meet the challenges presented by the pandemic. Indeed, these eighthgrade students will be unable to remember their time at Rectory without thinking of COVID-19, but seeing the Dining Hall filled with students and their families enjoying a meal was a refreshing indication that life was returning to some degree of normalcy.

Mr. Williams then called up each of the 11 departing eighth-grade students to receive a certificate of eighth-grade completion and an alumnus pin. In doing so, Mr. Williams also announced the secondary school each student planned to attend. In one case, he could not help singling out the student’s choice because she was moving from Rectory School whose head of school is Fred Williams to Cate School whose Head of School is Ben Williams, Fred’s brother. While taking what he called the “obligatory selfie” with the student to send to his brother, Fred quipped, “You’re not going to like him as much as you like me!” Mr. Williams then wished all departing students well in their next chapter and invited them all to return home to Rectory whenever they are able.

Mr. Williams then introduced Norm Riker ’85 to give the keynote address. Though the message applied to all students, and really everyone in the room, Mr. Riker’s address was focused on leadership and geared toward those students returning to Rectory for their ninth-grade year.

Being the oldest students on campus would afford certain privileges, but there would also be a lot more responsibility. Mr. Riker recounted his younger years growing up on Block Island where his father was the police chief. He mentioned a few uncomfortable family dinners when his behavior found him meeting up with his father “in his work attire.”

Mr. Riker said that Rectory turned his life around and set him on the right path. He shared vivid memories of experiences that taught him some hard lessons and others that helped him develop confidence. Mr. Riker suggested that, contrary to what one might think, failure is an important component of leadership. He invited the eighth-grade class to try new things and to push themselves. Instead of fearing failure, Mr. Riker said, they should embrace it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

He concluded his comments by reminding students they have received, and will continue to need, help to achieve their dreams and that they should always remember to appreciate their parents, families, and teachers who support their development into the leaders of tomorrow.

After Mr. Riker concluded, returning ninth graders were asked to stand and be acknowledged for a job well done this year.

leaving the wolf den

Rectory’s Class of 2022 began their end-of-year festivities with a burgeoning tradition called Leaving the Wolf Den. It was a chance for the soon-to-be graduates to reflect on their time at Rectory and begin to consider what it means to be a Rectory alumnus/a. Leaving the Wolf Den took place in our student center known, appropriately, as the Wolf Den, on May 19, and students were treated to a special take-out lunch for the occasion.

Alumni from years past remember the Wolf Den space as their Dining Hall, and several alumni who returned to campus for Centennial Weekend commented that they couldn’t believe they all fit in the space back then. The room was crowded with Rectory students at mealtime again, and it created a nice connection to the alumni community the students would be joining a few short weeks later. The Alumni and Development Office hosted the event, and John Xeller, alumni relations manager, welcomed the class and described the purpose of Leaving the Wolf Den. The program included an introduction to Alumni and Development staff and an explanation of ways to keep in touch with Rectory after graduation. One of the best ways to stay connected with Rectory is first to keep in touch with one another. In order to facilitate connections among their peers, class agents were chosen based on nominations made by faculty and administrators. Class agents agreed to check in with some of their Rectory classmates a few times each year and lead efforts to remain involved with our school however they are able.

Students then had an opportunity to consider their time at Rectory and think intentionally about what they hoped their future might look like. After they were given a prompt, students spent around 15 minutes writing letters to their future self. Upon completing their letter, students sealed it and handed it to Alumni and Development staff for safe-keeping. The letters will be returned to the students in person or via mail on the occasion of their tenth Rectory reunion in 2032. Knowing their last three weeks on campus were going to be hectic, the students really valued the chance to consider who they are, what they are experiencing, and where they hope the road ahead may lead.

ALUMNI EVENTS

family weekends

Fall Family Weekend took place in October, and our student families appreciated getting an in-depth experience of campus, many for the first time due to prior pandemic-related restrictions.

The weekend program was a hybrid model that included both virtual and in-person events. Families who were unable to travel to Pomfret were able to participate in parent-teacher conferences as well as view student artwork and musical performances.

On Friday evening, guests attended the fall concert, Rectory’s Greatest Hits, which included performances by Rectory’s instrumental and vocal groups. The program also included a welcome from Fred Williams and the “all school video” that featured photos and videos of the school year to that point. After the concert, families and students enjoyed a wonderful al fresco dinner prepared

by Rectory’s outstanding kitchen staff. Saturday featured the usual slate of athletic competitions and demonstrations, and this year, two different campus tours were added to the schedule that appealed to both new and returning Rectory families.

The academic building tour showed off the new Innovation Lab as well as the renovated science labs in the SPIROL Science Wing, and the route passed through a gallery of student artwork. The historical tour was led by Rectory administrator and Archivist Lisa Levesque and traced our school’s 100-year history by visiting important campus landmarks.

Guests were treated to plenty of sunshine, mild temperatures, and a delicious cookout, and the Rectory Parents’ Association provided snacks, games, and inflatables for all the kids in attendance.

Campus was buzzing with excitement as it always does on family weekend. Spring Family Weekend coincided with the Celebration for a Century.

The mingling of current families and employees with alumni, past faculty, and all Centennial guests was particularly special. You may read all about Centennial events elsewhere in this issue. Events specific to Spring Family Weekend included: classroom visits, the spring concert, lunch in Colhoun Gymnasium, elementary school grandparents and special friend day, and Middle School parent-advisor meetings. Guests reported enjoying seeing their students’ teachers in actions as they observed classes throughout the day. The spring concert was presented in two sessions—the first featuring primarily students in grades K-6 and the second featuring performers in orchestra, jazz, guitar, RECapella, and the school musical—with both receiving rave reviews from attendees. Campus looked incredible and all events went off without a hitch thanks to Rectory’s wonderful staff, and the excitement on our students’ faces said it all—Spring Family Weekend was an unequivocal success.

from city to country zillian “zee” krstic ’10 appreciates a balanced approach

Pomfret, Connecticut, has always been a far cry from New York City even though traveling between the two places could be done in a matter of hours. In nearly every conceivable way, a person who came to Pomfret from New York City or a person who did the reverse was looking for something different. At the beginning of 2006, 11-year-old Zee Krstic’s ’10 mother knew he needed something different, and that is what brought him from city life in New York to country life at Rectory School. It was a process, but it all worked out in the end.

Zee found what he needed at Rectory, and the balance he achieved here served him well each step of his journey, full circle, back to New York City.

Zee was a fifth grader when his mother first decided he needed something different from his education. He spent hours each day commuting to and from a nice but small and resourcestrapped private school. The academic program was basic, and there were no extra-curricular activities to speak of. As a first step, Zee’s mom signed him up for baseball. It did not turn out as she had planned, however, as on the day of the first scheduled game, Zee remembered, “We piled onto a bus and sat in four hours of city traffic to Randall’s Island to find no baseball team. Basically, it did not happen.” Turning her attention to the school day, Zee’s mother enrolled him at a public school on Long Island, which—looking back—struck Zee as an act of desperation. Maybe the city was the problem so “try the suburbs and see if that works.” The school on Long Island did not end up being the answer, and that was when Zee’s mother heard about Rectory School from one of her friends.

It was a whirlwind inquiry and enrollment for Zee at Rectory. His mother’s friend put them in touch with Claudia and Vinny Ricci, and they arranged for a Friday campus tour. Upon seeing campus the first time, Zee said his impression was, “this is so different and cool.” The tour went well, and the 32

following Monday, Zee’s mother heard from Mr. Ricci that there was a spot for Zee if they wanted it. They told Zee’s school on Wednesday that he was leaving, and he moved onto dorm in Pomfret the following week! School had been in session for a few weeks, so that was an added element to an already significant life change. It would be understandable if there were bumps along the way, and Zee admitted, “If you ask some of the faculty that are still around today about me, they’ll tell you that my first year-and-a-half to two years at Rectory were actually pretty challenging.” What was it, though, that kept him at Rectory after the time that he and his mother knew the other options they tried were not going to work?

Zee believed what made Rectory different was the “totally different mindset” on campus compared to his life in the city. It began with basic things like being outside for large portions of the day, something he was not used to in New York. One of the other major draws to Rectory was that the boarding program when Zee arrived was all boys.

Zee’s mother was a single parent, and she thought the all-male-boarding environment would help Zee experience things “she couldn’t provide on her own.” Even though the boarding program went co-ed less than a year after Zee started at Rectory, he benefited tremendously from other aspects of the program over time.

Rectory was where Zee learned the value of structure, responsibility, and taking care of himself.

There were adults around to provide support and guidance, but the expectation was that each student would learn to manage as much of their needs on their own as they could and then speak up if they needed help. It was an eye-opening experience for Zee, and growth did not happen overnight. He recounted the diligent efforts of Ms. Fran Morano, his dorm parent at the time. He remembered her leveling with him, saying, “This is how things go. You need to invest in yourself, take care of your room, do your chores.” Through Ms. Morano’s persistence, Zee developed accountability and started to expect more from himself as a student, athlete, and person.

The variety of offerings at Rectory, in stark contrast to the city private school he had attended, helped Zee begin to understand his

identity and interests. One of the great things about Rectory, he said, was, “There is something for everyone, and there is also equally something to push everyone. It is a place where you can find out quickly what you love and what you don’t.”

It was then that Zee began to value balance. One thing Zee loved from the outset at Rectory was music, and he took advantage of what he considered a “well-developed” performing arts program. He was less enthused about sports; his brief stint as a baseball player certainly did not help, but he learned a great deal about teamwork and giving one’s best no matter what as a member of the football team. There was something to do every minute of the day and night, and Zee was learning how to make the most of his time.

Zee received his first-ever report card at the end of his first term at Rectory. His New York schools had a different evaluation system, and his grades on that first report, he said, gave him a “wake up call.” He committed to applying the lessons he learned about accountability and investing in himself to his studies. He started to utilize the specialized resources available to Rectory students so that he could improve his academic performance. He did not identify a single moment in time when he realized it, but at some point around two years into his Rectory career, Zee thought to himself, “I’m actually thriving here.”

That may have had something to do with why— despite single-sex boarding being one of the attractive features of Rectory’s program for Zee and his mother at the outset–the initiation of the girl boarding program only made Zee more at home on campus.

Growing up surrounded by females, Zee welcomed the shift from a predominantly male campus to a more balanced environment. The transition, from his perspective, went really smoothly. One of the benefits he noticed immediately was a broader offering of evening and weekend activities. Prior to the start of the girls boarding program, all the offerings seemed to be geared toward “getting kids’ energy out” through things like playing dodge ball for hours on end.

The girl boarding program ushered in what Zee called a “reframing” of activities. Students could still play dodge ball if they wanted, and they could also choose from less physical activities, as well.

Though it was hard to describe the overall impact of the new program, Zee said, “The vibe shifted.

It allowed me to hang out in a co-ed space, and it felt more holistic.” The idea that Rectory became more holistic and better balanced was a recurring theme from Zee’s recollections.

As a ninth-grade student, Zee assumed several leadership roles at the school, and though his experience was positive in the end, the challenges he had to overcome remain just as important to him as his triumphs. He had to develop thick skin and become more “worldly and street smart” at a younger age than most of his peers. Of his Rectory accolades, Zee often joked with his mother that 9 out of 10 awards he won were for “Most Improved” and never MVP. The more he thought about it, the more Zee honed in on how much he changed during his time at Rectory.

He summed up his feelings from graduation by saying, “I pushed myself to take advantage of every opportunity, and a lot of my weak spots had become less noticeable.” Achieving greater balance by focusing on his strengths while managing his remaining weak spots set the stage for Zee to move on from Rectory with confidence.

Zee was a model student in high school and college and often thought that Rectory gave him a “leg up,” particularly when it came to academic preparation. He managed his time exceptionally well, and thanks, he said, to the influence of Mrs. Ricci at Rectory, he pursued his passion and talent for writing through the remainder of his education and into his professional life. That experience— having a teacher recognize a gift and help it grow—Zee said, “I hope that this is the case for every Rectory student.” He mentioned also that he hoped current Rectory students maintain structure in their days because, as he said, “There is no such thing as down time. There is always something you can do that adds to your value.”

Zee lives in New York City and said that he reminds himself often to make the most of every day. He considers himself “lucky to have a really good job.”

As it turns out, the balance and structure he had to leave the city to find, once attained, works just fine for Zee wherever he goes.

dear friends, This has been a milestone year for Rectory in so many ways. In addition to completing our CAIS (Connecticut Association of Independent Schools) Re-Accreditation effort, breaking ground on a new dormitory, beginning renovations to the girls' locker room, and introducing exciting program enhancements, the School celebrated— one year late due to COVID—our Centennial in grand fashion.

The Centennial Weekend events that were capped off by the party of the century and a concluding fireworks display provided the opportunity to reflect back and project forward as Rectory looks ambitiously toward our second century.

Lisa Levesque’s exceptional video essays on the founding of Rectory and the origins of Rectory’s learning services program, coupled with her historical tour of campus, brought to life the commitment and conviction of our founding family. VIP guest appearances by former faculty George Groom, Brad Seaward, and others provided familiar faces and heartfelt reunions for alumni—many of whom had not returned to Rectory since their graduation. Past then merged with the present as Director of Academics Lisa Hart led guests on a tour of the campus, highlighting facilities improvements and program enhancements. With all that has been occurring at Rectory, it was a lengthy tour!

In an effort to provide the best school experience, Rectory engages in a perpetual cycle of review, reflection, and response. The response—a new course, an upgraded space, an enrollment initiative—often needs financial backing to come to fruition. You are the reason the tour was so long and our progress so dramatic.

The Rectory community contributes enthusiastically every year, but this was a record-setter, with the School receiving more gifts than ever. The net result: $11.9 million in total giving! The impact this will have on our school will be transformational.

I have never been more excited about our community’s engagement and our school’s future. The specter of COVID is fading, normalcy is returning, and the joyful Centennial Weekend interactions uniting Rectory community members ranging in age from five to ninety-five are still vivid in my mind. Thank you to our teachers, learning specialists (a.k.a. tutors), advisors, students, parents, and alumni. And thank YOU for supporting Rectory so generously into a new century.

Both parents were type A personalities, and I was their first born. During my 8th-grade year, they had a conference with the principal who shocked them with his educational opinion that I did not have the aptitude to make it through high school. My father took out a second mortgage on our home. My first year at Rectory, I repeated the 7th grade in classes half the size of my previous school. Rectory became the means by which I graduated from a private Vermont high school in four years, then four years from Hillsdale College in Michigan with a double major, and graduating in 1975 with a master’s degree from a Massachusetts graduate school.

“Don’t take this the wrong way, but how does a kid from the literal other side of the world end up at Rectory School in Pomfret?” It was a direct but fair question from an alumnus to a current student that elicited a surprising response. “Rectory actually is very famous where I am from,” she said. For much of its history, Rectory has attracted students from near and far, but the paths students have taken to arrive in Pomfret are numerous and wide-reaching. Yeo Bi Choi ’10 was a self-described naive and care-free 13-year-old from Seoul, Korea, when her family decided, based on the recommendation of a relative living in New Jersey, to send her to school in New England. Once the region was determined, Rectory School appeared on their radar. Whether or not it was clear to the Choi family that Yeo Bi—if she enrolled there—would be Rectory’s first girl boarding student was uncertain, but what was clear was that it only took a few minutes on campus before Yeo Bi knew Pomfret was a place she could call home. >

ALUMNI PROFILE

Self-conscious about her lack of English language learning prior to her

enrollment, Yeo Bi was heartened by the culture of welcome at Rectory. She recalled her tour with then Admissions team members Mr. Vinny Ricci and Mrs. Kerri Nagle, and she thought she made a lot of “mistakes” when answering their questions. Choi said they made her feel at ease by being “really understanding, and I felt like the whole time I could tell them my story.” Once she moved onto campus, Choi said the nurturing atmosphere was apparent everywhere.

She referred to teachers as “kind of like my parents; they looked out for me in multiple ways,” and she loved that all the students did everything together, something she said was new for her. Choi compared boarding school life with “sleeping over every night with my friends.”

One might suspect that living among the small, first group of girl boarders must have been jarring, what with Rectory’s boarding program being single-sex for 85 years prior to then. “Um, not really,” Choi said, “Maybe I was just not really aware of my surroundings, but it almost felt special that everyone said, ‘You’re the first year of girl boarders.’” Going to school with boys was not new for Choi, and actually, co-ed classrooms were a reality at Rectory for the vast majority of its history through the day student program, so the biggest differences related to the enrollment of girl boarding students occurred at meal times and evening and weekend activities. Choi said she never experienced any negativity related to her gender and that looking back, she thought the “gender balance” was a good thing for Rectory.

Choi’s Rectory highlights affirm her recollection that the incorporation of girl boarding students went smoothly because her story sounds similar to those of countless boy boarding students who went before her. She referred to herself as “not an athlete,” but she appreciated that Rectory required sports so students could get exercise everyday.

Despite limiting her expectations, Choi sounded grateful for the coaching and support she received in the Rectory athletic arena. She was especially grateful for Mr. Braden Long, her basketball coach, who treated her with kindness–and some playful teasing–when she stole the ball from the other team, dribbled the length of the floor, and made a fast-break layup–in the wrong basket. Choi perceived Rectory as a place that met students where they were, and it was what allowed her to have a meaningful involvement in sports despite athletics not being her strong suit.

Performing arts was where she felt most comfortable. Choi was a talented musician when she arrived at Rectory, and she flourished in the music program under the direction of Dr. Jacqueline Smith. Being on campus all the time, Choi believed, helped teachers like Dr. Smith provide developmental opportunities to students. Choi was invited to attend regional competitions and orchestra auditions. She often traveled to different cities to hear and perform music, and all the time, Dr. Smith was there to provide transportation and instruction. It was one example, of many, that made Yeo Bi feel in regard to dorm parents and faculty that, “We are their children.”

After three years on campus, Rectory graduation was an emotional occasion for Choi. “I was crying the whole graduation.

Everyone was so much like family–it was hard to leave,” she said.

Regarding the community, Choi was supremely grateful for all the times Rectory teachers welcomed her into their homes. They hosted her during holiday breaks when she could not return home to Korea, and each time she went, she said, it felt like a family event. The impact of leaving that environment did not set in immediately for Choi, for as she said, “I think I wasn’t old enough to really understand what it meant to leave a place.” She admitted that high school was challenging for her. Academically, she was pushed even more than she was at Rectory, but the bigger difference, she noted, was that she did not feel anywhere near as care-free. Fortunately for Choi, she attended secondary school in Massachusetts and was able to reconnect with several of her Rectory classmates from time to time. When she has met up with Rectory alumni friends, “it feels like we are right back to middle school ages, back on campus.” Their in-person meet-ups have grown less frequent, but Choi has remained connected to Rectory however possible.

One of the most recent times Choi connected with Rectory was in the spring of 2021, when she was the recipient of the Emerging Leader Award, presented annually to a young alumnus/a who has shown success and potential for leadership early in their professional life. During that ceremony, Choi indicated that music was her goal and passion for much of her life and that she hoped to get back to performing live, but her educational background had focused on cognitive neuroscience. She is enrolled at Dartmouth University and is working toward her PhD As for her future plans, she said she could follow a traditional path into academia, or she might explore other outlets to utilize the knowledge she has acquired. Whatever path she chooses, Choi said that, “I want to use my career to help people like my older brother who has autism.”

Her research to this point has centered on persons with autism and their visual processing. Two of the potential outlets for her research, she mentioned, were public policy and clinical settings. Either would work for Choi who hopes to “go into the community, closer to the actual people who are impacted.” Though this specific research interest and career goal was not curated at Rectory, the family and community values that helped her thrive have remained an integral part of Choi’s mindset.

Choi reported that she got married recently and is living in Boston with her partner. She has joined an online community of Korean Rectory alumni, and that has served as one of the ways she has kept up with what is happening on and off campus. Choi’s Rectory story as one of the first girl boarding students is as unique as the path she took from Seoul to Pomfret. She returned again and again, however, to two things we hope all Rectory students experience: opportunities for growth and a caring environment that feels like home.
