BASKETBALL BASICS: ADAPTIVE BASKETBALL CLINIC

Essential Eligibility Criteria: Program levels 1-3. Basketball Basics will provide individuals with physical and developmental disabilities an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of basketball, including the rules, foundational skills, and game play all while enjoying noncompetitive games and drills. Essential Eligibility: Program Levels 1-2. Introductory cheerleading class that teaches and models cheerleading skills and drills. Class participants of all abilities are invited to have fun learning basic cheers and dance movements. If participant needs personal care assistance, parent/guardian must remain on site. AR CRAFT CLUB

Frederick County Parks and Recreation offers Adaptive Recreation (AR) programs designed to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities, developmental differences, and/or higher support needs as well as emphasize participants’ unique abilities. Programs utilize trained staff and higher staff/participant ratios in addition to adapted spaces, materials, and content to provide an opportunity for individuals to participate in various recreation activities. This icon denotes programs that are designed for participants with disabilities, developmental differences, or higher support needs.

Adaptive Recreation

Essential Eligibility Criteria Program levels FCPR’s Adaptive Recreation Programs utilize designated program levels and essential eligibility criteria to ensure the safety of all participants and staff who are part of the program and to allow participants to experience the program to the fullest extent. These levels outline the minimum physical and cognitive skills needed in order to participate.

LEVEL 1 

LEVEL 2

No assistance needed to maneuver rugged terrain and extended distances.

No assistance needed with level surfaces. May use assistive device (manual wheelchair, canes, walker, crutches, etc.).

Can maintain their own personal hygiene and without assistance.

Can follow multiple-step instructions.

Can maintain their own personal hygiene with verbal cues.

Able to convey feelings, desires, and emotions without assistance.

Can follow single or two-step instructions.

Demonstrates age-appropriate social and emotional skills in managing personal boundaries, relationships, communication, stress, and conflict.

Will stay with group without assistance. Can independently manage the sensory stimulation of a frequently large, loud, and energetic group environment. For outdoor adventure-based programs only: Must be comfortable in a rustic, outdoor environment (e.g. exposure to extended periods of direct sun, varying weather conditions, insects/animals, grass/dirt/mud). Must be comfortable in open water using a PFD (personal flotation device).

Able to convey feelings, desires and needs with picture cues or communication device. Demonstrates age-appropriate social and emotional skills in managing personal boundaries, relationships, communication, stress, and conflict with some assistance. Will stay with group with the help of verbal prompts. Can manage the sensory stimulation of a frequently large, loud, and energetic group environment with some assistance.

Unless explicitly stated in the program description, FCPR staff do not provide hands-on assistance with toileting or feeding/eating; staff will provide assistance with verbal cues or visual aids. If a participant needs assistance during activity hours, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian/caregiver or individual to arrange for assistance.

EMPOWERED GYMNASTICS ADAPTIVE GYMNASTICS

Essential Eligibility: Program Levels 1-2. Empowered Gymnastics will teach children with physical and development disabilities, delays, or differences the basics of gymnastics. We will use lower level apparatuses to grow the students’ comfort levels and focus on starting positions and basic skills. Each class we will start with a warm up, then move to stretching, structured activities, and a game or group play at the end. Essential Eligibility Criteria: Program levels 1 & 2. This class will provide individuals with physical and developmental disabilities an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of martial arts, including stances, blocking, striking, and kicking and allow them to focus on individual skills in a team environment. Goals: To improve attention, motor, and sensory skills and build self confidence. No class 5/4. 5 week session. Participants under 18 must be supervised by a parent/guardian/caregiver over the age of 18. No personal care will be provided. Aids/caregivers/guardians welcome at no additional cost. Essential Eligibility Criteria: Program levels 1-4. Families of children with higher support needs are welcome to our first all day open gym! Between the times of 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM you can come enjoy use of our gym and equipment at Rock Creek Rec Center. Come move, play, and explore! Choose to stay for an hour, or two, go get lunch and then come back! You can come and go as you please throughout the time slot. Select sports equipment will be provided. No formal instruction will be provided. Participants under 18 must be supervised by a parent/guardian/caregiver over the age of 18. Siblings are welcome at no additional cost. If personal care assistance is needed, caregiver must stay onsite. Goals: To increase coordination, body awareness, gross motor skills, and physical activity. SOCCER

TEE BALL

Essential Eligibility: Level 3. This clinic will provide the basic skills and techniques of power wheelchair soccer. Power soccer is an adaptation of traditional soccer. Unlike traditional soccer, power soccer athletes play the game using specialized wheelchairs and adaptive equipment. Players use power wheelchairs and soccer guards to maneuver the ball across the field and score goals. Goals: To learn the basics of power soccer and increase social skill in an encouraging team environment.

Tee Ball Basics will provide individuals with physical and developmental disabilities, delays, or differences the structure to learn the fundamentals of tee ball including basic skills, game scenarios, and rules, while enjoying a team atmosphere and completing drills and activities at one’s own pace. Goals: To increase strength and improve gross motor skills, athletic ability, and social skill in an encouraging team environment. 7 week session.
