2024
STARTS WITH Life at university SPORT

The University of Western Australia acknowledges that its campus is situated on Noongar land, and that Noongar people remain the spiritual and cultural custodians of their land, and continue to practise their values, languages, beliefs and knowledge.
We would like to acknowledge Noongar Elder Neville Collard for the inspiration for the design of the UWA Jersey.
THE BLACK SWAN The Story of
THE ONLY PLACE IN THE WORLD YOU WILL FIND BLACK SWANS IS
ON NOONGAR LANDS.
Back in the Nyitting (Dreaming), all maali (swans) were white. Every day they used to swim around in the water looking at their reflection, boasting about how beautiful they were.
“Aren’t we beautiful birds! Look at us, look at us, no one is as beautiful as us.”
The Warlitj (Golden Eagle) was always sitting in the trees, and every day he was subjected to the bragging of the white swan.
One day, the white swan walked up onto the land, and as quick as a flash the eagle flew down and started beating all the feathers out of the swan, making it bare.
The eagle flew back into the tree and said, “Brag now maali, brag now.”
Because it was winter, the swan began to shiver and cry for warmth. The Wardong (crow) flew down and said,
“What’s wrong brother swan, what’s wrong?”
The swan began to cry and told him what happened.
The crow took his feathers off his back and gave them to the swan, and the feathers started to grow and cover the swan. The swan went to wipe the tears from his eyes and the blood from his wingtip stained his beak red.
If you look at the black swan today, you will see the feathers on their back are ruffled from where the crow gave his feathers. You will see the red beak, and when they fly you will see some white feathers to remind him that he was once a white swan.”
At The University of Western Australia, sport plays a central role in the lives of students; encouraging new friendships, skills and healthy campus culture.
Many of the programs and services offered by UWA Sport are supported by the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) for the direct benefit of all UWA students.
