Reflections of the Class of 2019 June 5th, 2019 A Special Supplement to the Prosser Record-Bulletin and the Grandview Herald

Words from the Superintendent To the Class of 2019,

Every spring, students return their books, clean out their lockers, and turn in any borrowed athletic equipment. For most it is summer. But for a small handful of our students, this annual ritual will be their last. They are seniors, looking forward to graduation. As community members who observe this happening each year, we know that life changes rapidly for our graduating seniors. They will be thrust out into the world and asked to lead productive lives. As a Superintendent, I have listened to people describe senior graduation as a milestone, a turning point, and a rite of passage. In my mind it is much, much more. I believe that high school graduation is a reason to celebrate. It is also a call to action. As a community, we have invested in these students for the past thirteen years. We have watched our students grow and develop into young adults. We have cheered them on as they have demonstrated their academic, athletic, and artistic abilities. We now have the great honor of graduating these students as Prosser Mustangs. If you have had the opportunity to get to know any of our seniors, you have been provided with a window into our future. From my vantage point, I see future leaders, engaged citizens, loving parents, and people who change our world for the better. If you haven’t had the opportunity to get to know our seniors, I would like to encourage you to pay attention to the students in the Class of 2019. This class is not only capable of doing great things, they WILL do great things. If you are a member of the Class of 2019, I want to commend you on your hard-work, perseverance, tenacity, and seeing objectives through to completion. I am very proud of you. Your diploma is a marker of thirteen years of sustained efforts, and yet, I know this is only the beginning of the impressive work you will do. On the National Library in Washington, D.C. is the inscription, “The Past is Only a Prologue”. What has gone on only foreshadows so much more. Please, live big lives, dream big dreams, and choose to make a difference in the world. Congratulations and Godspeed,

Congratulations Class of 2019

Some Graduation Facts “Pomp and Circumstance” is the traditional graduation march. It was composed by Sir Edward Elgar and first performed on Oct. 19, 1901 in Liverpool, England. Although not every commencement uses this song, it was passed down to America from English institutions. At BYU, the graduates ring the

Y bell during graduation. It gives you the chance to go out into the world and do what you want. To choose a career or school that′s perfect for you. It means being able to find pride and happiness in your work and life. Graduation means you survived high school.

To graduate means to successfully complete your schooling, to become “a graduate.” When you graduate from high school, you become a high school graduate and congratulations are in order. A graduate is someone who has received a degree from a school.

Friends Forever

And so we talked all night about the rest of our lives Where we’re gonna be when we turn twenty five I keep thinking times will never change Keep on thinking things will always be the same But when we leave this year, we won’t be coming back No more hanging out ‘cause we’re on a different track And if you got something that you need to say You better say it right now ‘cause you don’t have another day Cause we’re moving on and we can’t slow down These memories are playing like a film without sound And I keep thinking of that night in June I didn’t know much of love But it came too soon And there was me and you And then we got real cool Stay at home talking on the telephone with me We’d get so excited, we’d get so scared Laughing at ourselves thinking life’s not fair And this is how it feels As we go on We remember All the times we Had together And as our lives change Come whatever We will still be Friends forever So if we get the big jobs And we make the big money When we look back now Will our jokes still be funny? Will we still remember everything we learned in school Still be trying to break every single rule? Will little brainy Bobby be the stockbroker man? Can Heather find a job that won’t interfere with her tan? I keep, I keep thinking that it’s not goodbye Keep on thinking it’s a time to fly And this is how it feels As we go on We remember All the times we Had together

Songwriters: Josh Deutsch / Colleen Fitzpatrick

And as our lives change Come whatever We will still be Friends forever La, la, la, la Yeah, yeah, yeah La, la, la, la We will still be friends forever Will we think about tomorrow like we think about now? Can we survive it out there? Can we make it somehow (somehow)? I guess I thought that this would never end And suddenly it’s like we’re women and men Will the past be a shadow that will follow us ‘round? Will these memories fade when I leave this town I keep, I keep thinking that it’s not goodbye Keep on thinking it’s a time to fly As we go on We remember All the times we Had together And as our lives change Come whatever We will still be Friends forever As we go on We remember All the times we Had together And as our lives change Come whatever We will still be Friends forever As we go on We remember All the times we Had together And as our lives change Come whatever We will still be Friends forever

Reflections of the Class of 2019 June 5th, 2019 A Special Supplement to the Prosser Record-Bulletin and the Grandview Herald

2019

Words from the Superintendent To the Class of 2019,

Let me be one of the first to congratulate each and every one of you for what you have accomplished. Graduation is an important life step, and it’s an achievement that doesn’t come easily. As you prepare to walk across that stage and accept your high school diploma I hope you’ll take a minute to reflect back on just what this accomplishment means. Your diploma represents years of hard work, thousands of hours of studying, homework and research. This is something that has taken more than just one year to achieve. It’s something you have been working toward since you first stepped through the door of your kindergarten classroom. I hope you realize the enormity of what you have achieved, and remember a good education is an important foundation. It’s a stepping stone to jobs, careers, college and beyond. An education can help you fulfill your dreams and push toward success. We in the Grandview School District are all proud of what you have achieved during your time here. As you each get ready to celebrate your high school graduation, remember there are a lot of people behind the scenes who will be rooting for you – your family, friends and each of your teachers, along with a huge network made up of school counselors, para-pros, custodians, administrators and other school officials. We are all proud of each and every one of you. Congratulations. Sincerely, Henry Strom Superintendent Grandview School District.

Front Row L-R: Laura Chavez, Ingrid Valencia, Elizabeth Frias, Alexa Rodriguez, and Tiffany Ochoa.

Reese Ramos - GPA 4.0

Parents: Rick Ramos and Irma Gonzalez-Ramos Inspiration: I’m a big athlete guy, as a kid I thought that sports were the only thing that mattered, and that sports was the only way I could make money. But I then realized school would always be there for me and that it was the best way to be a lawyer, after realizing that I would and am still pushing myself everyday to be a better me than I was before. Favorite Class: Avid 12 Post-Graduation Plans: Attend Whitworth for four years, and then I plan on attending Law School Career Plans: Lawyer Advice for Younger Students: Enjoy high school as much as possible, because I guarantee that when your senior year comes and you are ready to graduate, there will be at least one thing that you wish you would have done.

Monica Macias - GPA 4.0

Parents: Maria and Fermin Macias Inspiration: My parents have been my biggest inspiration. I know they have been through a lot to get to where they are today. I want to succeed to make them proud and make their efforts worthwhile. Favorite Class: Chemistry Post-Graduation Plans: Attending UW and majoring in Biology. Later I want to apply to Med School. Career Plans: Pediatrician Advice for Younger Students: Enjoy your time in high school and make the best of it because it will be over before you know it.

Parents: Santos and Graciela Guerrero Inspiration: I am definitely inspired by the hard work my parents go through just to give me the life they never had. They have inspired me to work hard for what I want in life. Favorite Class: My favorite class would be chemistry only because of the cool and fun experiments that we get to do in class. At the moment we are growing crystals. Post-Graduation Plans: I am planning to attend Columbia Basin Community College where I will apply for the four-year dental hygiene program and pursue a career as a dental hygienist. Career Plans: I plan to become a Dental Hygienist and hopefully transfer to a university and continue my education in the dental field where I will study to become an Orthodontist. Advice for Younger Students: In order to persevere in life, you have to work hard for what you want. There will definitely be a couple bumps in the road, but you have to learn how to turn your weaknesses into your strengths.

Marin Bender - GPA 3.94

Parents: Wanda and Jeff Bender Inspiration: My parents inspired me to get through school by always pushing me to be my best self and being my greatest support through everything I do. The reason I want to become a Family Nurse Practitioner for children with type one diabetics is because I was diagnosed with diabetes at age 12, and I struggled finding the right doctor for me since I was still young. Since I had that experience, it inspired me to want to become like my doctor at Children’s Hospital one day. Favorite Class: AVID 12 with Bunker.

I keep, I keep thinking that it’s not goodbye Keep on thinking it’s a time to fly And this is how it feels

Congratulations

Songwriters: Josh Deutsch / Colleen Fitzpatrick

As we go on We remember All the times we Had together And as our lives change Come whatever We will still be Friends forever La, la, la, la Yeah, yeah, yeah La, la, la, la We will still be friends forever Will we think about tomorrow like we think about now?

Some Things No One Tells You After Graduation Hannah Orenstein

1. You will be fine. Promise. We know, we know: there’s the stress of starting all over again in college as a baby freshman, the crushing pressure of college tuition and student loan debt, the terror of taking charge of your own life. Despite it all, you will be totally fine. Yes, there will be weepy calls to mom when you can’t figure out how to turn on the iron and when that cute boy you meet during Welcome Week ghosts you (he’s the worst, don’t even worry about it). Life after graduation can feel like the drop after the peak of a rollercoaster — terrifying, sure, but also exhilarating. 2. Some friends will drift away. Even if it sounds unimaginable right now, your entire prom limo will not get together every summer to rent a house on the beach and reminisce about the good old times for the rest of your lives. Most people stay in touch with a handful of their very best friends from high school and that’s it. If that thought makes you sad, don’t worry: the people who are really worth keeping around in your life will always be there for you. 3. One friend will completely reinvent herself. You’ll see her one day and it’ll be like, huh? Are you really the same girl I’ve known since kindergarten? 4. Your life will basically become a Taylor Swift song. Happy, free, confused, and lonely at the same time might be a line straight out of “22,” but it applies just as much to the period right after graduating high school. It’s normal to feel on top of the world and like you’ve figured it all out one day, and to feel like you’re hurtling toward adulthood way too fast the next. It’s a lot to process all at once. It’s OK to cut yourself some slack!

OK. Breaking up can feel like your heart is going through an FBI-grade paper shredder, but eventually, you’ll come out on the other side single, happy, and more mature. 6. You don’t grow up all at once. Graduation is a HUGE milestone, but it’s not like you flip your tassel from right to left and suddenly feel worldly and wise. You’re still gonna feel like a lost little kid sometimes, especially when it comes time to file taxes for that summer job or make a big decision about your college major. The secret is knowing that every single other person your age feels exactly the same way. 7. You become more fearless. Now that you have a diploma under your belt, the product of years of hard work and dedication, you know you can take on any challenge and complete it with gusto. You got this, girl. Nothing is tougher to accomplish than passing junior year chem, and you did that just fine. 8. It’s finally socially acceptable to friend-request your favorite teacher on Facebook. *adds* ... *stalks*

9. Friendships will require more effort than they did before. In high school, you knew without fail that you’d bump into your best friend by your locker or in Spanish class every single day. But once you graduate, those friendships take a lot more work to maintain. If you’re lucky enough to wind up attending the same college after graduation, you′ll still need to coordinate weekend plans and trek across campus to each other′s dorms. If you’re heading in separate directions, be prepared for your friendship to involve more FaceTime than face time. Tons of Snapchats, visits to each other′s campuses, handmade care packages just because you love

each other are the key to keeping the friendship alive. Yeah, that′s a lot of work, but if you want to hold onto each other, it′s totally worth it. 10. Your parents will probably expect more of you. For starters, they might not have minded when you skipped emptying the dishwasher, so you’d have more time to study. But now that you’re out of school, they’re going to start treating you like a real adult, which means more responsibilities. Here’s the weird thing: doing the dishes feels way more rewarding now that you’re an ~adult.~ It’s like you’re beginning to see eye to eye with your parents in a really cool way.
