Voted 2015’s Best New Fashion-Forward Boutique by Westchester magazine’s readers, Catherine H. continues to bring European flair to Westchester. Proudly entering its third holiday season in Katonah, Catherine H. has happily settled in to the neighborhood, among the other fabulously unique specialty shops and boutiques. Catherine approaches buying for the boutique as an art; she follows her senses and what inspires her. Refusing to conform to trends, Catherine keeps her customers in mind during her buying and adheres to a simple philosophy: wardrobes should consist of a few well-tailored core items, with a sprinkling of specialty items and accessories. No longer are the days of work versus play clothes. We offer seasonal collections of individually selected basics and specialty items that are intended to transition from day into night. Mostly manufactured in the U.S. — Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Maine and New York — we also feature international lines from Canada, Spain, Italy and France. This season, we play with proportions, unexpected lines, patterns, colors, and textures, while juxtaposing utilitarian style with tailored, feminine classics. Hours: Open seven days a week. Monday through Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday to 5 p.m., Sunday from noon to 4 pm. View our latest arrivals on www.catherineh.com.

Come into Enchantments — the small, beautiful boutique on Katonah Avenue — and you’ll immediately notice its calm, welcoming atmosphere. Owner Melanie Shepard and sales manager Ursula Back let you browse uninterrupted through the shop, but they’re right there to answer questions and expertly compile outfits for the “real women” who shop here. “We offer brands not typically found in department stores,” Melanie says. Clothing and accessories are both ontrend and supremely wearable, no matter a woman’s body type. Enchantments’ core lines are Clara Sunwoo, Chalet, Habitat, and Lilla P, some of which are made in the U.S. — as are many of the store’s other offerings — an aspect important to Melanie and her customers. Whether you require outfits for business, everyday or travel, Enchantments will help you find the wardrobe you need. And if you’ve searched in vain for personalized, boutique shopping without the pressure, visit Enchantments. You’ll see for yourself that it’s possible, and oh-so-close to home! Hours: Open seven days a week. Monday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

ur children are our future, and as always, their futures begin long before they enter kindergarten and begin formal schooling. Established in 1957, Lissie’s Katonah Playschool is a private, nonsectarian, early childhood center operating on the premises of the First Presbyterian Church in the heart of the hamlet. Children of all races, colors, creeds and abilities are welcome to begin their learning here. Licensed by New York State Office of Children and Family Services and accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, Lissie’s Katonah Playschool offers preschool classes for 2- to 5-year-olds, afternoon pre-K science enrichment, and before- and after-school care for school-age children, as well as the pre-K children. “Lissie’s provides a happy, healthy educational experience,” says director Anne Harris. “Children are encouraged to develop social-emotional, language, cognitive, fine and gross motor, and self-help skills.” Through developmentally appropriate practice and an enriching environment, children strengthen their skills through play-based activities. “Research has shown that children who have good social and emotional skills and can get along with their friends are the best learners,” says Anne. “It’s my opinion that this prepares children to succeed in school and in life.” Special Lunch Bunch classes in art, drama, tae kwon do, yoga, science and cooking — even math arts — can extend a preschooler’s school day, and Lissie’s Katonah Playschool is exceptional in its professional licensing to care for older students before and after elementary school. Call for a class schedule and appointment to learn more about the unforgettable experience offered at Lissie’s Katonah Playschool.

It’s fun to visit G. Willikers, no matter your age! You’ll enjoy shopping for toys that girls and boys will really use — from baby’s first teething ring to board games the whole family spends hours playing — and all kinds of gifts. Meghan Bazaar’s mom, Linda Ambrosino, began G. Willikers in Saratoga Springs and the Albany area 26 years ago, so making kids happy is definitely in the genes. “We’re an old-fashioned store in the best sense of the word,” says Meghan. “Our products focus on imaginary play and art, fostering education as well as imagination.” G. Willikers stocks well-made toys, puzzles and games from around the world — items kids won’t play with once and toss aside. “There’s a strong organic and ecofriendly bent here, too. That means a lot to us as well,” Meghan says. Customer service is top-drawer, with knowledgeable, helpful staff — mostly parents and teachers in their other lives — who know just what children love! Gift-wrapping’s free of charge, a huge plus in these hectic days. Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday to 4:30 p.m.

At Kelloggs & Lawrence we cherish our hardware heritage of 128 years, and continuously stock everyday needs as well as specialty gifts, fireplace items, and an impressive selection of apparel and camping products. Bart’s expertise and design sense will help you find the perfect selection for your hearth needs. Gifts! We have become famous for an extensive collection of wonderful gifts for the whole family. hat would you call a shop that benefits people wanting to donate high-quality merchandise for a tax donation? What would you call a shop that benefits consigners of valuable merchandise in exchange for cash? What would you call a shop that auctions this merchandise, benefitting bidders with great prices, often at a fraction of the original cost? What would you call a shop that benefits people looking for designer pieces impossible to find elsewhere? And what would you call a shop that uses its profits to benefit community charities? Pam Stone and her colleagues, Patti Hogan and Beth Romski, call it The Benefit Shop — and you will, too — when you see the merchandise that passes through the doors of the 8,000-squarefoot gallery and auction house: Early American, Victorian, midcentury modern furniture; antiques; collectibles; decorative arts; china, crystal, sterling silver, designer fashions, jewelry in precious metals set with diamonds and gemstones; and fine art. Each auction of hundreds of items, held about every three weeks, is “a trip around the world and through the decades,” says Pam Stone. Price range? Anywhere from $20 to $20,000, she says. About seven years ago, Pam left a career in investment banking to start a thrift shop in her neighborhood. That success morphed into an auction house, which now has become The Benefit Shop. Soon, the original thrift shop will move into the gallery building as a buy-it-now area stocked with auction leftovers. Want to be involved as a consigner, donator or bidder? Check the website www.thebenefitshop. org for instructions, dates and paperwork — and prepare to be amazed. Office hours: Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

he Long Ridge School, an independent day school for 2-year-olds through grade five, is located on a beautiful 14-acre woodland campus in North Stamford. The school serves students from southern Connecticut and Westchester. At Long Ridge, teachers work with each child’s natural curiosity to build critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The school believes children should explore, experiment and experience the joy of learning in a caring, exciting and challenging academic community. Interdisciplinary themes connect the curricular areas and excite children about learning, lend context to new information, help children learn to make logical associations and develop their critical-thinking skills. The school’s greatest strength is the expertise and dedication of its faculty. The teachers at Long Ridge have an average of 24 years of teaching experience and most have advanced degrees in early childhood or elementary education. Classroom teachers are supported by specialists in art, music, science, technology, Spanish, library and physical education. The school teaches students to think independently, to learn how to learn, and to participate actively in their own educations. Long Ridge students are motivated, successful individuals who score well on nationally administered achievement tests. They go on to a variety of public and private schools, well prepared for their next schools and a lifetime of learning. Founded in 1938, The Long Ridge School attracts children from diverse economic, racial, religious and cultural backgrounds. Transportation is provided for New York residents within 15 miles of the school.

For a child’s introduction to learning in a school environment, parents can choose no better than ThistleWaithe Learning Center, a Montessori preschool located at the St. Mary’s School building in the heart of Katonah. This haven of learning is dedicated to the mind, body, and heart of each child and inspires the youngest learner to inquire, explore and savor their world. ThistleWaithe sparks curiosity and sets the foundation for critical thinking and problem-solving. The indoor classroom offers a treasure trove of materials that invite exploration and bolster children’s skills. The outdoor classroom inspires wonder, offering a butterfly and herb garden. Children chart their own course for vibrant discovery through observation, inquiry and practical application. Children 3 to 6 years of age are carefully guided by Montessori-certified head teachers. A toddler class is currently under consideration, based upon interest. Special programs include Mandarin, French and music/movement. A cook’s kitchen and expansive gymnasium offer endless opportunities. ThistleWaithe’s main campus in South Salem offers half- and full-day Montessori programs, along with summer camp. Hours: Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Music is an integral part of life. It is mathematical, sensory and emotional. A good teacher can help us discover and appreciate our talents at any age — infant to adult. Laura D’Amico has created an environment at Mustard Seed Music Studio for learning and enjoying music in many forms: instruments, song, dance and theory. She has brought many families together as a community in Katonah. They recognize each other in classes for infants and preschoolers, at lessons and at the annual student recital. Laura’s gift is her ability to connect with people through music and engage students of all ages at each one’s unique aptitude. Laura has recently expanded Mustard Seed’s programs to include acoustic and electric guitar, taught by Timothy Forcelli. In addition to guitar and piano lessons, Timothy teaches budding songwriters composition to turn that tune into something special! Lesson registration is ongoing and welcomes a wide range of students, no matter age, previous experience or skill level. inner with a loved one in the soft glow of candlelight is the essence of romance. Custom Candle Co. offers the allure of candlelight, and also imparts the science behind it — the differences among paraffin and soy wax; how the length of the wick alters the luminous intensity of the light; how the mood changes according to the translucence and color of the container. Custom Candle Co., owned by Marcie Manfredonia and her son, Anthony Desideri, stocks a huge variety of candles produced by the world’s finest candlemakers, including Lafco, Archipelago, Believe, Marianne Guedin Paris and other brands carried in luxury stores like Nordstrom and Saks. The idea for designer candles came from Anthony, who began cutting down high-end liquor bottles and repurposing them into another life, including candles, ashtrays, and vases, among other items. How about a candle in the bottom half of a Dom Perignon bottle? Choose your wax color, wick, scent and container for a custom candle sure to please a gift recipient. Other shop offerings include soaps, bath salts, and reed diffusers. For the holidays, Marcie is creating gift baskets of candles, soaps and all-natural bath salts, plus special order arrangements by request. Stop by and create a mood with candlelight. Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday during the holidays, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

e’re new to the neighborhood but we’ve been friends for years. Landmark Preschool is pleased to announce its newest location at 44 Village Green in Bedford. This past September, Landmark Bedford began offering programs for 1- to 4-year-olds. Preschool is often a child’s first experience outside the home, and it’s an important place for a child to develop confidence and independence. With more than 40 years of experience in early education, Landmark Preschool has developed differentiated learning strategies to best meet each child’s interests and needs — all in a nurturing and supportive environment. We’re interested in learning what makes your child unique and giving him or her the skills to develop those talents. The three-hour day at Landmark Bedford runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and balances social-emotional, cog-

nitive, and physical skill development. The program includes early literacy instruction and math skill development, as well as art, science, technology, and music instruction with classroom specialists. These activities are designed to foster a love of learning and to develop readiness for reading, writing letters, and understanding basic math and science concepts. Children also enjoy outdoor play in the new playground as well as cooking activities. Landmark Preschool is a division of Ridgefield Academy, a non-sectarian, not-for-profit, independent day school that educates more than 600 Westchester and Fairfield county students enrolled across its three campuses. After 40 years as your Connecticut neighbor, Landmark Preschool is happy and excited to be in New York. Elizabeth Rosen Mayer, writing coach with client

Elizabeth Rosen Mayer, who has a doctorate in English, is an award-winning writer and former university professor. Having served on university and graduate admissions committees, she is fully aware of the demands and the stress that come with the college application process. “When writing their essays, students become overly conscious of the reader,” Mayer says. “There is a lot of pressure — from parents and from the process itself.” She has taught multiple classes in personal essay writing, and says she “learned how to demystify the process and make it a lesson in self-discovery, instead of an exercise in angst.” Mayer coaches students from her Greenwich, Connecticut office or clients’ homes. She first interviews students and, through a series of targeted exercises, enables them to find their “authentic voice.” “If a parent or student is trying to find a less anxiety-ridden approach to the college application process, I can help,” Mayer says. “I use concrete steps that help students create an original essay that fully expresses who they are. The process can actually be a fun, enlightening experience.” Hours: Email for an appointment: Elizabeth@ExpressAssociates.com

Susan Williamson

New is the operative word to describe Booksy Galore. The little bookstore with a big heart is no longer so little, having tripled its space since opening in Scotts Corners two years ago. You’ll still find vintage books — the biographies, classics and the leather-bound volumes so popular with collectors. You’ll still experience the personal interest storeowner Susan Williamson takes in her customers, and the social ambiance the store inspires. But there’s more … Booksy Galore now has new books, including bestsellers and the best in children’s literature. (Can’t find it? Susan will get it, and meet Amazon’s price.) Also on the shelves are Papyrus greeting cards, refurbished manual typewriters (yes, in great demand, Susan says), and classic LP and 45 records. Carmel Archambault may not have dogs of her own, but she’s still completely in love with them! Her Pound Ridge Pet Care invites pups of all ages, sizes and spots into her air-conditioned home for day care, overnight or vacation — with flexible hours, unusual in the pet care world. “I have up to six dogs here in the house at any given time; they’re here while I’m cooking, watching TV and in my office,” says Carmel. “No leashes, kennels or cages, and the dogs sleep on my bed if they want to and go in the car for errands. Dogs are socialized and exercised here, and they’re relaxed here.” Pound Ridge Pet Care features two fenced-in yards, for separating dogs by size if needed. To ensure compatibility, Carmel asks owners to bring dogs in for a “meet and greet” before signing up. She’s fully insured, and dogs must be vaccinated. Calling her home “dog heaven on earth,” Carmel administers medications and even takes dogs to the vet or groomer. Call for appointment.

Where learning and play go hand in hand, the nonsectarian Pound Ridge Community Church Play School has been preparing preschoolers for kindergarten since 1963. In encouraging kindergarten readiness skills, there’s a combination of hands-on, teacher-directed learning and child-directed free play, striking the right balance for children ages 2 to 5 from Pound Ridge and surrounding communities. Director Kirstin Zarras cites the Play School’s “developmentally appropriate curriculum that’s an exciting and meaningful combination of learning and play. Children also enjoy music and movement, art and science, and lots of fun outdoor time on the Play School playground.” The Play School day runs from 8:45 a.m. to noon, with staggered arrivals and pickups. For families seeking longer days, the Play School collaborates on-site with the Bedford Learning Center, Tuesday through Friday, with enrichment activities focused on kindergarten readiness, literature, science and nature. A number of dedicated Play School teachers move into their Bedford Learning Center roles for the afternoons. The Play School, next to Pound Ridge Elementary School, is perfectly positioned for students’ seamless transition into kindergarten; our staff confers regularly with PRES teachers. very homeowner wants a beautiful green lawn, one that graces the home it surrounds and offers a refined welcome to residents and guests. The ways to a beautiful lawn are sunlight and irrigation. Mother Nature supplies the sun, and as homeowners from New Canaan south to Riverdale and west to the Hudson River know, Evermist Lawn Sprinklers is the go-to company for irrigation. Richard Gasparino started the company more than a quarter century ago, based on his knowledge of irrigation systems and the watering requirements of various grasses, shrubs, flowers and trees. Technological innovations have had a major impact on water efficiency, which saves homeowners money, and also protects our natural resource. Evermist staff attends classes and consults with our suppliers to bring new ideas and designs to our industry, which puts us on the cutting edge of water efficiency and cost savings for our homeowners and commercial customers. Since the beginning, the company has grown to include up to 18 workers during the height of the growing season, five service trucks, and a headquarters building in Port Chester. Joining Richard in the company are his two sons, Richard Jr. and Dominick; his mother-in-law, Sylvia DeGiacomo, as office manager; and his wife, April, as chief financial officer. Whatever your family’s irrigation needs — underground systems, drainage, well-water systems, iron and sand elimination systems, residential and commercial — you will be glad you spoke to our family at Evermist Lawn Sprinklers. Susan Westlake has been tutoring students for the English portion of the SAT and ACT for more than 10 years. With a degree in education from the University of Michigan, and experience teaching middle school, high school and college, she enjoys working one-on-one with her students. She says it is gratifying to know that the things she teaches — vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar, and essay writing — are all things that add value not only for the SAT and the ACT, but for high school, college and life. In addition to tutoring, Susan practices law. She finds that her background as a corporate and trademark attorney, and her experience as an editor of the Law Review at the University of San Diego School of Law, enhance the value she adds to each student’s educational development. She says there is no one formula to prepping students for the college exams. “Some students come with an outstanding vocabulary, the ability to discern nuances in passages presented for analysis, a strong knowledge of grammar, and the ability to write cogently. Other students have a different starting point,” Susan says. For each, she partners with her students to help them hone their skills and maximize their potential on the exams. Darren T. Scala opened D. Thomas Fine Miniatures to share his passion for miniatures with his community and to raise awareness of the decorative art form. The shop, located in the Moviehouse Mews, has been a gift for enthusiasts, hobbyists and collectors needing a local source; it has also drawn interest from the general public, eager to learn about the discipline. “Miniatures have been around since the days of the pharaohs,” Scala says. “They are quite alluring and seductive.” In addition to the retail segment of the business (in-store and online), the proprietor offers workshops and classes, and also invites other artists to mount exhibits in his gallery. Visitors will find artisan dollhouses, of course — scaled 1:12 (one foot miniaturized to one inch) — plus collectibles to appeal to a broad range of interests. Having designed and installed hundreds of systems, Howard has earned the rank of master Sonos designer/installer. Howard works closely with his clients during the design phase of the project. He then delivers and meticulously installs the system. “Every system is unique and must be easy to use,” says Howard. “And every client receives individual attention.” Wired Ltd. works on existing homes and collaborates with builders and designers on new construction and renovations. It’s the call every mother dreads: “Your child has head lice.” No worries. Anna Albano-Krosche, the Lice Lady of Westchester, can come to the rescue 365 days a year, “because lice is always an emergency.” Anna is Westchester’s original head lice removal expert. “I’ve been in business since 1998, and I’ve treated over 10,000 heads,” says Anna. She is the area’s only lice removal specialist with a freestanding salon. She also makes house calls. Anna frequently travels to schools and camps to do lice checks and to give presentations on head lice prevention. “I’ve been through this with my own children and myself, and I relate 100 percent to everybody who comes in,” she says. A client’s head is examined under a magnification light, then is given a 20minute, all-natural enzyme-based shampoo. Nits are combed from the hair, then the hair is rinsed, blown dry and rechecked. Clients leave the salon with a homework sheet, including instructions on how to “delouse your house.”

Cindy Guilianti and Alison Comas, owner

Remember The Curtain Exchange, the place to shop for window treatments, fabrics and shades? Now, new owner Alison Comas is bringing 30 years of expertise, top brand names in merchandise, and interior design options to the shop, to help customers freshen up all the rooms in their homes — from reupholstering and floor plans to wallpapers, fabrics and hardware, even kitchen and bath tiles and fixtures. The trend in interior design is neutrals, Alison says — particularly grays and taupes. Lighter looks with small finials to adorn thin metal poles complement the subdued color palette. Many of our local neighborhoods reflect 1920s Tudor and Georgian colonial styles, and the shop’s designers are particularly adept at transitioning vintage home design to the latest leanings in décor. Many clients prefer incremental updates to whole-house undertakings, and this wise plan avoids mistakes and contains costs, Alison says. Classic Curtains & Interiors: now the place for all your decorating needs. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by appointment evenings and Monday afternoons.

here do I start? This question is on the minds of many people searching for direction in their professional lives: recent college graduates, armed with a degree and few leadership skills; young people with ideas about a business, but lacking the entrepreneurship to launch it; women having raised a family and now transitioning into the business world; people looking toward midlife career changes. Answers for many have been found at Purpl, located in the original St. Stanislaus Church in Hastings, and now transformed into an enrichment and performance space. The space itself, which encourages introspection and reflection, facilitates workshops with nationally recognized experts to spur creativity, direction, discussion and peer networking in a stimulating co-workspace environment. Live events in the music venue have hosted a diverse range of performers, like Shawn Colvin, Sean Rowe, Vieux Farka Touré, and Red Baraat — the common theme being a powerful audience experience. Sarah Hinawi, whose concept for Purpl grew from her training in college and career planning, opened Purpl with her husband, Adel Hinawi, four years ago, and has seen the membership grow steadily — largely as a result of the stimulating offerings toward career development, such as lunch meetings for members, one-on-one counseling, and peer mentorship groups. As Sarah explains, the name Purpl, without the final “e,” is purposely unfinished, like many clients seeking possibilities, empowerment and selfdirection. “We are the incubator from which to build an enriching life,” she says. Business and co-workspace hours: Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with special events and live performances in the evening.

’Errico Jewelry is the only store in Westchester where you can bring your idea for a piece of jewelry, even using your own stones, and see it created step-by-step through the design and fabrication process. There’s no need to leave your stones, we measure them and then set them at the end. There are no surprises; everything is completed on-site in our factory. Design adjustments can even be made along the way. Visit Westchester’s gem — our log cabin factory — that combines skilled craftsmen, talented designers and a beautiful showroom. We regularly repair, size, and clean jewelry while you wait and watch. We never let you leave unhappy. This is a jewelry experience like no other. Nunzio Cantone, Nancy Grogan, Patrick Miller, Sal D’Errico, Robert Hough, Richie D’Errico, Kit Wall, Dana Schwartz and José Paréja

eal estate services in Scarsdale have expanded and modernized under a new banner — Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Westchester Properties (BHHS), led by industry veteran Mark Nadler, a familiar and respected name in Scarsdale and in real estate for more than 30 years. Centennial Realty and Prudential Centennial Realty are now part of the robust set of real estate tools and resources of the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Global Network Platform. Scarsdale’s real estate buyers and sellers have never been in better hands. The Berkshire Hathaway name is synonymous with its leader, Warren Buffet, whose expertise and business acumen are unparalleled in today’s marketplace. Blue chip investors who have trusted his wisdom have flourished, just as real estate investors in Scarsdale, Larchmont and the surrounding communities can do no better than to trust the agents working under the Berkshire Hathaway name.

These agents are as committed to excellence as the famous Mr. Buffet, who would have it no other way. Whatever your real estate interest — residential, commercial, corporate relocation, equestrian, waterfront living — Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices will provide you with the kind of exceptional service that leads to business ventures with successful and satisfying closings. Our clients tell us that in their real estate dealings, agents from Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices provide “the best and most innovative services they have ever experienced.” The inventory at BHHS covers a range of home building styles, particularly in the stately English Tudor and center-hall colonial designs that characterize so much of this area. These properties, so supremely desirable, fetch the best offers from buyers and for sellers when in the hands of agents who know the market best. Hours: Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Other times available by appointment.
