24th June
This afternoon long workshop will hear from central banks (the Philippines, ECB and SARB), NatWest bank, Diebold Nixdorf, Brink’s, CashInfraPro and Oberthur Cash Protection as they present and discuss how to reduce the impact of cash post-issue. The ECB’s Product Environment Footprint study found that 87% of the impact of cash occurred post issue, so this is an important topic. The workshop is open to all delegates. There will be two discussion panels and the chance to compare notes with colleagues.
25th June
The Forum will start with keynote speakers from the Bundesbank, European Central Bank (ECB), Rewired Earth and G+D giving us an overview of the sustainability challenges facing cash, and the planet, and some of the actions they are taking. Rewired Earth are driving a co-operative approach uniting key players to tackle sustainability challenges in business and building on a highly innovative survey methodology.
MyCarbon, EcoVadis, Verco and De La Rue will talk about measurement. On the basis that you can only change what you measure, this session starts a discussion about what goals to set, how to establish comparable metrics, living with Europe’s new environmental reporting regulations (CSRD) and measuring scope 3 emissions for real.
Building on the metrics discussed immediately beforehand there will then be a panel discussion about how to tender for sustainability in the cash industry. Speakers include Orell Fuessli and EcoVadis
The ECB, Oberthur, CCL Secure and Npower will talk about their work to design for sustainability, who is responsible for what in the life of a banknote, helping central banks reduce their environmental impact and how to source renewable energy with confidence.
26th June
CashInfraPro, Bangko Sentral Ng Pilipinas, NatWest bank and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) will cover practical steps to manage the cash cycle better, coin recirculation in the Philippines, how NatWest and the UK’s Cash Industry Environmental Charter group are moving forward to reducing cash cycle impacts and RBNZ will give a first report on their trial to recycle cash through retail outlets in remote areas without input from commercial banks, a new way of providing access to cash.
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB), Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) and Leftover Currency will describe their work to manage cash differently. While Leftover Currency will explain how central banks can help make coin repatriation easier, SARB and RCM will address different aspects of banknote and coin management, as well as RCM’s wider ESG reporting and initiatives.
Louisenthal, Blendpaper/Casa da Moeda and Landqart will provide new ways to recycle and repurpose unfit cotton and hybrid banknotes at end-of-life.
The Forum will end with a review of the what has been heard in the form of a panel that debates whether central banks need to lead on cash cycle sustainability.
Be seen and heard as an environmental sustainability leader by central banks, customers, suppliers and partners.

The first Cash Sustainability Forum was in November 2021, and this built on the white paper’s ‘Cash: a Roadmap to Sustainability’. In 2022 we published a white paper on repurposing unfit cotton banknotes, ‘What Goes Round Comes Round’, and in 2023 we ran three webinars on cotton and polymer destruction. We also supported an IACA webinar on putting sustainability into tenders.
Ahead of the 2024 Cash Sustainability Forum we will publish a white paper on best practice in managing recirculation of cash outside of central banks.
