editorial

In this last issue of RechargEast Magazine in 2012, we are providing an overview of the main events, which the printing market faced during these last twelve months. We are reviewing the market trends, focusing on the new features available in the newly released printing equipment, and creating assumptions about the impending changes, which may potentially change the face of the printing industry tomorrow. In the last two-three issues of the magazine we had touched upon the fact, that the printing industry, especially the OEM segment, is going through a rather difficult and instable period: the main market players are making additional efforts to rethink and re-establish their position in the global market place. The printing aftermarket seems to be playing the role of an attentive onlooker in this game with the sole purpose of clearly understanding the new reality and acting based on new circumstances. To me, such a strategy is not going to help fully in averting negative consequences of the restructuring occurring to OEM companies. The aftermarket needs to show more pro-activity in relation to the market changes: news about a vendor's decision to quit a specific market segment would need to turn into a red-flag and trigger a relevant action. Say, Lexmark wants out of the ink business, you as a business owner need, for instance, to start thinking about ways to eliminate any inventory buildup for ink products for Lexmark printers. It is also the right moment to reconsider your business models if they are highly dependent on a vendor's current structure or behavior. As we have already seen, these can change relatively quickly and go into a direction we can hardly predict. My advice is simple: watch out and get ready for a change!

Do not hesitate to forward all interesting materials resulted from your practical experience! We will publish them in our magazine with great pleasure. Materials can be submitted in an Eastern European language or in English to news@rechargeast.com. We also welcome PRs from Eastern European companies.

Brother HL-4150 printer engine is based on a new 25-30 ppm black and color, 2400 x 600 DPI color LED engine. The machines come standard with 128Mb expandable to 384Mb of memory, and all run off a 400 MHz processor. All models come standard with duplex built in and some have wireless interfaces. With print speeds of up to 30ppm and street pricing starting at $289.00, these machines have become very popular.

The toner cartridges do not have a reset chip on them, but do have a reset gear that must be positioned properly for the machine to accept it as a new cartridge. The proper reset position of the gear will be covered later in this instruction. The gears themselves can be a bit confusing as there are different configurations worldwide. Basically it comes down to this. For High yield cartridges (3.5 or 4K) color or black use a Grey reset gear. For Extra high Yield cartridges (6k) color or black use a Black reset gear. Starter cartridges are considered to be a Standard yield and do not come with a reset gear. Any starter cartridge can be converted to a HY or EHY cartridge. In different areas of the world different yields are available so there is not a separate color reset gear

nor a separate black reset gear. Below is a chart of which cartridges are used in what location, the part numbers and yield. The gear that should be used for each is indicated by the yield.

As the cartridge is used, the bias voltage is reduced gradually down to a lower voltage. This process is necessary because according to Brother, a new toner cartridge has a tendency to print light. As the cartridge is used, the density increases (Lower voltage = higher density). To keep the density level even throughout its life, the density bias voltage is reduced

accordingly. Each time a new cartridge is installed, the reset gear engages the gear train. The rib on the reset gear pushes down on the new toner sensor. The bias voltage is then reset, and the cartridge page count is reset to zero. HY cartridges have different stages set for the bias voltage than an Extra high yields cartridge does. That’s why there are two different gears While the cartridge yield is stated in pages printed, it actually is based on the revolutions of the developer roller. The larger the run, the better the yield. There are roller cycles for every print job and automatic ones too. There is the warm-up cycle, color registration cycle, developer bias cycle etc. As these cycles are normally run once per job, the bigger the print job, the better the yield. There are multiple revolutions for each cycle and some will run upon turning the printer on or opening the front cover. They can range from 35 rotations to as much as

262 rotations for each function so you can see how they can add up quickly. Brother has charts that cover different sized print jobs and how they relate to the total effective yield. 14) Vacuum/blow the doctor blade. We do not recommend that the doctor blade be removed as the developer roller felt seals will be disturbed. Once a new blade is available, great care will have to be taken not to tear the seals causing a leak. The doctor blade can be easily cleaned by blowing the excess toner off, and wiping down with a lint free cloth. Be very careful not to leave any lint behind and do not use any chemicals to clean it! 15) Inspect the developer roller felts. If they are compressed, (shiny) gently rough them up with a small screwdriver. See Figure 20.

CANON GEAR PATENTS ®

WHY REMANUFACTURERS WORLDWIDE SHOULD TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY

Thank you for allowing me a few minutes to speak with you about the very serious threat facing all genuine laser and ink jet cartridge remanufacturers worldwide.

in plastic injection molding equipment, additional personnel and time devoted to system testing, we now have fully functional gear solutions that eliminate the risk of infringing Canon’s patents.

In July 2010, and again in January of this year, Canon® took legal action against manufacturers, remanufacturers and resellers of aftermarket cartridges that use OPC drum drive gears they believe infringe two of their patents. At issue is the twist feature that is being used on 23 different OPC drums in Canon and HP® laser printer cartridges.

Our gear designs have no twist and no slant and this is critical to eliminating the potential to infringe Canon’s gear patents. In order to show you how serious Canon is about protecting their patents, let me simply quote directly from their latest press releases: “Throughout the development, sales and marketing process, Canon respects the intellectual property of other companies and individuals and expects others to similarly respect Canon’s intellectual property rights. Canon remains committed to pursuing legal enforcement against those who do not respect Canon’s intellectual property.” Ed swartz

Industry analysts estimate that 60 to 70 percent of all remanufactured laser printer cartridges sold today use gears with a twist design. This means there are millions of remanufactured cartridges sold each month using a gear that Canon believes infringe their patents. I instructed my engineers and legal team to develop a different, fully FoundEr & CEo Static Control takes all patents functional gear design that would statiC Control extremely seriously and, like eliminate any risk of infringing Canon, we respect the intellectual property of Canon’s gear patents. We were successful in this other companies and individuals. We are therefore redesign and filed for our own patents in July of moving to our patented gear solutions as soon as 2007. We received our first gear patent in October possible and I strongly urge you do the same. 2010 and a second gear patent in December 2011. After an investment of thousands of legal and engineering hours and many millions of dollars

Thank you very much for your time.

Static Control will ONLY sell to genuine cartridge remanufacturers. We will not sell to new build compatible ink and laser cartridge manufacturers.

Organizers Set 2013 Dates for World’s Largest Consumables Event Fol low i ng visitor and exhibitor acclaim over the 2012 CIFEX|RemaxAsia Expo — the world's largest trade show for the computer printing industry — organizers have announced the 7th annual event to be held again in Zhuhai, China on 16–19 October 2012. The conference will be held on the first day October 16th, and the trade show will follow over the next 3 days. Despite the imaging industry facing tough times with the poor global economy, the 2012 CIFEX — the annual international trade show for the computer printing industry — broke many records. There were 425 exhibits covering 30,000 square meters. There was a larger presence by HP, Xerox, Lexmark, Canon and other original printer manufacturers, with some speaking during the conference sessions to visitors. The Zhuhai event attracted more than 9,035 visitors from 75 countries around the globe at the massive Zhuhai Airshow Centre. The one-day Conference@2012 attracted 192 delegates, including representatives from the major original equipment makers (OEMs). It succeeded in giving voice to concerns of interest to both sides of the replacement cartridge industry. The 2013 CIFEX|RemaxAsia Expo is scheduled to run at the same time as other important shows such as the China Sourcing Fair, the Hong Kong Electronic Fair, and the Canton Fair, saving international buyers time and costs while visiting several show close together.

20

Organizers already expect there will be 400 exhibitors and 10,000 visitors attending the CIFEX|RemaxAsia Expo 2013, requiring the exhibition floor space to increase to 30,000 sqm. At the same time iPrint (China) Expo 2013 will be held at the Zhuhai Airshow center attracting even more visitors. One thousand hotel room nights have been booked by the organizers who will offer these free of charge to international visitors who have never attended CIFEX|RemaxAsia Expo before. A global promotion of the 2013 event through trade associations, industry media and websites, and 10 industry trade shows globally will see awareness of the event increase further. Anna Liang, sales manager of Recycling Times Media Corporation, commented: “The sale of booths for 2013 CIFEX|RemaxAsia Expo is already very popular. Almost all exhibitors in 2012 will attend the 2013 show again. They are very keen to contact us and book their space." More information is available at the organiser’s new website: www.iRecyclingTimes.com.

US Market Feedback: Ninestar’s Patented Gear is Reliable One more year has passed since Ninestar launched its laser cartridge with the patented gear in the US market. It is reported that the gear is researched and developed by itself and the gear is surely non-twisted. Now the feedback from the customers in the United States proves that Ninestar’s patented gear is reliable both in quality and patent safety. Mr. Thomas, executive from a consumables distributing company, said “the patented gear of Ninestar is really a great success. It is not only avoiding the infringement of Canon, but also keeps the high and stable quality of its products.” The comments have also been posted the other clients “the laser cartridges with patented gear from Ninestar covers most of cartridge models, and the quality is also a reason why we choose them.” The words show Ninestar’s strength

on technology and innovation. The two patents (NO.US5903803/ US6128454) involved in Canon 337 Investigation are directed to twisted projection. Ninestar’s patented gear (as shown below) is non-twisted which means it falls outside the scope of the said patents. The gear has experienced lifetime test in different models printers. All of the companies named in complaints filed in both federal U.S. District Court and the International Trade Commission have settled the complaints, most with conditions favourable to Canon®.

Industry analysts estimate that up to 70 percent of all remanufactured laser printer cartridges sold today use OPC drums with gears that feature a twist design that risks infringing Canon®’s patents. Static Control’s gears do not slant or twist, and they have 90 degree angles. Go to www.scc-inc.com for more information on Static Control’s ZeroTwist™ gear technology. For details on Canon®’s lawsuits and its patents, go to http://www. scc-inc.com/npu/md_gear_se_2012/.

“After an investment of thousands of legal and engineering hours and many millions of dollars in plastic injection moulding equipment, additional personnel and time devoted to system testing, we now have fully functional gear solutions that eliminate the risk of infringing Canon®’s patents,” said Ed Swartz, Founder and CEO of Static Control. Static Control has released 24 ZeroTwist™ OPC drums for more than 150 cartridges used in more than 180 printer models. www.scceurope.co.uk

Static Control Releases Complete Imaging System for Dell® 5330, Samsung® ML-4551 and Xerox® Phaser® 3600 Cartridges Static Control has released toner, OPC drum, wiper blade, chips and other components for cartridges used in Dell® 5330, Samsung® ML-4050/4550/4551/4555 and Xerox® Phaser® 3600 printers. “Now customers can remanufacture highly profitable cartridges that deliver optimum performance consistently and produce prints that are virtually indistinguishable from those produced by OEM cartridges,” said Ed Swartz, founder and CEO of Static Control. “It was particularly difficult to develop a Dell® 5330 toner/OPC drum com-

bination that produces acceptable print density throughout the cartridge cycle.” The component set includes a new developer roller sealing blade. Static Control testing has shown the original blade to be prone to vertical streaking, filming and toner dumping and should be replaced with each cartridge cycle. www.scceurope.co.uk

Xerox Ranked in Leaders Quadrant by Gartner for MPS Xerox was recently placed in the Leaders Quadrant of the 2012 Magic Quadrant for Managed Print Services (MPS) Worldwide by Gartner. Xerox has managed to retain its leadership position in the MPS market by helping businesses use an MPS strategy to meet the changing needs of the workforce, including hot topics like increasing support for mobile workers and bring your own device policies, as well as securing confidential data and simplifying complex business processes. Meanwhile, the company's recent acquisition of NewField IT, a U.K.based print consultancy and software solutions provider, has provided it with new assessment and reporting tools. These have helped to capture growing demand from small and medium-sized businesses (SMB), while indicating the potential for up to 30 percent cost savings available via MPS, as well as improved energy efficiency and other productivity benefits. In fact, in an effort to make it easier for SMBs to leverage MPS, Xerox created a dedicated Channel Partner (News – Alert) Operations organization, which provides IT resellers with access to customized MPS offerings. "MPS has evolved beyond simply managing printed documents, it's about solving business problems. We believe Xerox has a leadership position because we've added expertise in business process and IT outsourcing to improve the way people work," said Andrew Morrison, senior vice president, Xerox Managed Print Services Business.

Chinese Printer Brand Pantum Launches in MENA Chinese printer manufacturer Pantum is ready to take on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) market and showcased a new range of laser printing solutions at GITEX in Dubai in October 2012. Part of the Chinese group Seine Technology Co. Ltd. and in a strategic partnership with Legend Capital, Pantum is China's first OEM to launch into the printer hardware and consumables industry in MENA, offering a new choice to SOHO and SMB printer users, as well as channel partners. Having served the printer consumables industry for many years, Seine made a strategic decision in 2006 to begin developing its own brand of laser printing solutions: Pantum. Pantum now offers a full range of competitive laser printers to the global market. Taking advantage of Seine's unique industry position, these reliable printers are using only Seine's own technology and ensure a long product life cycle and a high monthly workload, bringing the best total usage cost in its class. Jackson Wang, CEO at Seine, comments: "With

The range of laser printers shown at GITEX included the reliable monochrome laser printers Pantum 1000 / 2000 series, MFP 5200 series and P3000 small work team printers. "We were quite impressed with the reliability of the Pantum P2000 and P2050," said BLI Lab Manager Pete Emory. "Both units sailed through a rigorous 20,000-impression test with no misfeeds or malfunctions. This is especially significant because most competitive printers have duty cycles that are only a fraction of that of the Pantum devices." Source: ameinfo.com

Xerox Sees $100M Charge in 4Q of 2012 At the end of November, Xerox announced they will lay off 2,500 workers worldwide. This comes as a result of the company taking a $100 million charge to enable restructuring in the fourth quarter. The majority of cuts will be in the service side of the Xerox business, despite a growth in this section for the company. Services now account for more than half of Xerox's revenue. Moreover, the company’s board has approved an additional $1 billion for future share repurchases. The board also plans a 35% hike in the quarterly dividend to $0.0575 per share (or 23 cents a share annualized), payable on April 30, 2013. The move will further enhance shareholders’ value going forward. Despite this news, Xerox says it's growing services businesses lays the foundation for a solid future.

OKI

Certain Samsung Printers Contain Hardcoded Backdoor Accounts

OKI Data Americas To Resell Lantronix xPrintServer Mobile Printing Device

Some printers made by Samsung contain a hardcoded account that could let an attacker take control of the device remotely. The hardcoded account does not require authentication and can be accessed over the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) interface of the affected printers, the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) said in a security advisory in November, 2012.

OKI Data announced a reseller agreement with Lantronix, a leading global provider of smart M2M connectivity solutions. Through this agreement, OKI Data will become the first printer manufacturer to resell Lantronix’s award-winning xPrintServer™ iOS print server appliance. OKI Data initially plans to resell the recently launched xPrintServer Office Edition, which supports unlimited iOS devices, offers customizable settings and security options, and provides printing support for both USB and networkconnected printers, wired or wireless.

SNMP is an Internet protocol commonly used to monitor and read statistics from network-attached devices. The SNMP account found in Samsung printers has full read and write permissions and remains accessible even if SNMP is disabled using the printer’s management utility, US-CERT said. “Secondary impacts include: the ability to make changes to the device configuration, access to sensitive information (e.g., device and network information, credentials, and information passed to the printer), and the ability to leverage further attacks through arbitrary code execution,” the organization said. It’s not just Samsung-branded printers that contain the administrative account, but also some Dellbranded printers manufactured by Samsung. “Samsung has also indicated that they will be releasing a patch tool later this year to address vulnerable devices,” US-CERT said. US-CERT recommended that users follow security best practices and restrict access to the printers. Allowing access to their SNMP interfaces only from trusted hosts or network segments will limit the ability of attackers to use the hardcoded credentials, the organization said. This is not the first time when serious vulnerabilities are found in printers. Last year, two Columbia University researchers discovered a weakness in the remote firmware update feature of HP LaserJet printers that could have allowed attackers to take complete control of the devices. Samsung is working on a patch to fix the vulnerable devices and is expected to release it before the end of the year of 2012. Sources: pcworld.com | upi.com

The xPrintServer Office Edition from Lantronix enables large workgroups to print directly from iOS mobile devices through the native print menu, eliminating the need to download mobile print applications. The xPrintServer effectively converts existing printers into iOS-compatible devices and addresses the growing demand for cost-effective iOS mobile printing, specifically within the enterprise and education markets. The agreement between OKI Data and Lantronix serves as the next phase of the strategic alliance between the two companies following the co-marketing partnership which was formed in June 2012. OKI Data will market and sell the xPrintServer devices with an array of compatible OKI LED/Laser printers for customers, resellers and distributors that are seeking enhanced mobile printing solutions. Conversely, Lantronix will refer OKI Data’s products to members of its network that are in need of customized printing solutions. “This agreement bolsters OKI Data’s position as a valued printing solutions provider to our enterprise customers,” said Keith Fenton, Product Planning Manager for MFP Software and Solutions at OKI Data Americas. “By offering the xPrintServer with our single- and multi-function printers, OKI Data is able to provide mobile printing solutions to help optimize performance within specific workgroup environments quickly, easily, and cost-effectively.” Moreover, the partnership comes at a time when the use of iOS products has become increasingly commonplace within today’s workplace. The xPrintServer functions as a vital tool for offices and schools that are looking to manage and control the document output of numerous mobile devices. “Our reseller partnership with OKI Data Americas boosts our brand awareness and expands our reach and distribution channels,” said Mark D. Tullio, vice president of worldwide marketing for Lantronix. “By having OKI Data as a partner, we can better understand how large workgroups are using the device. In turn, this feedback provides us with useful information so that we can improve the features and functionality of the products as well as the user experience within the enterprise environment.” Source: lantronix.com

HP

Printing and PC Integration Will Continue Into 2013 for HP HP still has a lot to do to integrate its PC and printing groups into one. Now with the release of new products and initiatives in 2013, the company believes it will be much easier, said Herbert Koeck, vice president of the Printing Systems category, Printing and Personal Systems, Americas, for HP.

Xerox Opens New Shared Services Center in Iasi, Romania Xerox Romania inaugurated a new shared services center, located in the IDEO Business Center in Iasi, which will cater to European clients, where it plans to employ more than 500 people by the end of 2013. The new employees will work as software support managers, IT project managers, IT developers, financial analysts, specialists in extra-salary benefits, human resources and marketing assistants, pension funds accountants. Xerox is offering document management services, as well as IT operations and business processes externalization for its clients, said Tom Blodgett, Chief Operating Officer with Xerox’ European Services. Printer producer Xerox sold 72 percent more printers and multifunctional office equipment last year in Romania, focusing more on small and medium enterprises. Source: business-review.ro

U.S. Customs Officers Block Import of Printer Ink from South Korea U.S. customs officials blocked shipment of printer ink from South Korea because the ink violates Xerox's patents. Instead of cartridges filled with toner or liquid ink, Xerox's color printers use a unique solid ink, which looks and feels like a crayon. Tektronix developed the technology, and sold it to Xerox in 2000. Xerox maintains it's cheaper, and more environmentally friendly, than traditional ink cartridges and toner.

"We've been on an interesting journey this year," Koeck told a crowd of several hundred specialists at a conference in Las Vegas in November. "We're going to bring [the number of touch points within HP] down. There's still a long way to go for us." HP's move to combine PCs and printers was a simple choice because both groups shared the same partners, same distribution networks and even the same supply chain in many cases, Koeck said. HP was knocking on your door talking about printers and then later about PCs and servers. Meanwhile, HP will continue its strategy of rewarding VARs for selling a wide variety of HP products and services into 2013. "Our clear focus is to team with strong partners like you to sell more into the SMB space, which definitely for the next five years is the fastest-growing customer segment. Faster than consumer, faster than enterprise," Koeck said. During his keynote address at the conference, Koeck highlighted the forthcoming HP Officejet Pro X Series, which is slated to launch in February 2013. The Officejet Pro X Series is designed for SMB and prints at twice the speed and half the cost of laser, Koeck said. "We will spend millions of dollars to support you [to sell Officejet Pro]. This is a great product that will change printing in the SMB space," Koeck said. Source: crn.com

The South Korean ink came from a company called Hana Corp., according to Xerox. "Protecting our patent portfolio is critical to the future business success of our company," Don Liu, Xerox corporate senior vice president and general counsel, said in a written statement. "Our security and consumables teams are working with customs and investigative agencies to track the flow of non-Xerox solid ink throughout the United States." Xerox said U.S. custom officials acted after receiving a letter from U.S. senators, who asked Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to protect Xerox's patents. Source: OregonLive.com

Keep America Beautiful Honors Xerox Eastman Kodak Assigned Patent for Fusible Inkjet Recording Media Keep America Beautiful (KAB), a nonprofit organization, awarded Xerox Corporation with its 2012 Vision for America Award earlier this month in New York City. Xerox, the Norwalk-based printer and copier maker, was honored for the corporation's significant leadership role in social and environmental stewardship, philanthropy, and enlightened corporate citizenship, according to KAB officials. The Vision for America Award is presented annually to distinguished leaders of honored corporations whose personal and corporate commitment have significantly enhanced civic, environmental and social stewardship throughout the United States. "Doing the right thing for the planet and doing the right thing for Xerox are not at odds with each other but synergistic," said Ursula M. Burns, chairman and CEO, Xerox Corporation. "Today, our value proposition is built on the belief that helping our customers simplify their businesses leads to a healthier business and greener planet." Keep America Beautiful cited several specific corporate efforts, which led to the recognition for Xerox:

Eastman Kodak was assigned a patent (8,298,634) developed by Kurt M. Schroeder, Spencerport, N.Y., Lawrence P. DeMejo, Rochester, N.Y., and Gregory E. Missell, Lima, N.Y., for a "fusible inkjet recording media." The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "An inkjet printing system contains an inkjet printer loaded with a recording element comprising a support and an ink receiving layer containing: a) fusible polymeric particles; and b) a water soluble block copolymer having ethylene oxide and propylene oxide segments, the copolymer exhibiting a Draves wetting coefficient, for a 0.1 wt % solution in water at 25.degree. C., of not more than 360 seconds. An inkjet printing method and an inkjet recording medium are also contemplated." Source: equities.com

• Xerox has reduced energy use and waste associated with printing for companies and government agencies by up to 30 percent.

We sell empty cartridges and used mobile phones

• The Xerox Green World Alliance reuse/recycle program for imaging supplies is central to its commitment to waste-free products. Worldwide, Xerox customers returned more than 3.43 million cartridges, toner containers and other used supply items in 2011.

“PLEASE SEND US YOUR INQUIRY!”

• Xerox has retained its position on the FTSE4Good rating scheme by meeting the criteria for environmental actions, corporate responsibility, social and stakeholder engagement and human rights for the fifth consecutive year. • Nearly 12,300 Xerox employees volunteered in more than 750 projects through Xerox's Community Improvement Program. "Xerox helps its customers simplify the way they conduct business, improve and take the excess out of their processes, thereby saving resources and eliminating waste," said Matthew McKenna, Keep America Beautiful president and CEO. "It may sound simple. But it takes vision and a laser-like focus to achieve such laudable sustainability results."

Overview of the Printing Industry in 2012

52

| RechargEast Magazine • December'12 • www.rechargeast.com

At

the end of this year we would like to draw a line by summarizing the events and developments, which took place in the printing industry in 2012. As never before the current year has been extremely rich in events, which is a positive sign for the industry, which had been marked by a certain degree of stability turning into a mild stagnation over time. In 2012 the main news came from the OEM segment, which had been struggling with plummeting sales ever since 2008, when the financial crisis set in. In 2012 OEM companies started realizing more than before that their old business models needed fresh strategies and makeovers. We have already provided an overview of the major shakedowns, which we saw in 2012 (RechargEast, November 2012). In this issue of the magazine we would like to go over some of the major transformations in the OEM segment in an effort to outline the trends and projections for the coming 2012. We do not pretend to cover all the major or minor changes and news in this article, as our objective is to highlight those game-turning points, which may shape the global printing industry for the next two-three years.

Kodak was the news maker during the summer of 2012. The ailing photo film giant, who had taken on a bold enterprise of transforming itself from a photo into a printing company, had to confess its failure by quitting the printer manufacturing market. Several years ago the new CEO of the company announced the change in the strategy with the company's entry in the printer market. The plans were to take Kodak to the level of HP with the breakthrough printing tech-

54

nologies. Unfortunately, the newly released printers from Kodak were not received by the market the way the company anticipated. Still, it took at least two years for Kodak to realize that the efforts in the printer equipment direction were doomed to fail. Finally, the decision was made to leave it all to the "elder" brothers like HP, Canon and alike. At the same time, Kodak cannot and would not renounce completely to its original plans. Nonetheless, the company would stay in the printing market as it is keen on manufacturing printing supplies, which, as Kodak mentioned in one of the press releases, promise more profit. The company was not clear enough whether these supplies will be to support the existing Kodak-made printer base or to use in printers made by other manufacturers. The non-invincible HP got a strong crack on its reputation of the leader in b2c (business-to-customer)print-

ing solutions. With a rather quick rotation of CEOs, who either tarnished the company's reputation because of scandals or unreasonable acquisitions, the Palo Alto based company went as far as to fuse its imaging division with the PC one. Even though the official releases continued mentioning that the fuse was to balance the profitability of the two divisions, it is more likely that the PC division, which had been in the red for the last years due to competition from smart phones and tablets, needed a shot in the arm. This shot would need to come with the continuously profitable imaging division. Minus and plus would get to the needed balance. HP is probably not ready yet to spin off its PC business like IBM had done a decade ago. The news about the fusion of the two divisions was smoothly overridden by the strong launch of new printers in October. All the specialized media had to accept the fact that the release was one of the most

facts powerful ones produced by HP during the last 10-15 years. By this step, HP seems to be willing to reinstate itself as the leading company in the SOHO and end-user printer market. These efforts are very timely as the competition is out there to bite more of HP's market share in this segment. Lexmark, a big player in the printing industry in North America and a rather weak competitor in Europe and Asia, made a crucial decision to abandon the ink business. We still remember the launches of the wi-fi inkjet printers tagged as "the first wi-fi ink printers to the market" from two years ago. These printers did not seem to have been sold well - the competition from the Japanese vendors as well as low-cost ink supplies from South-Asia and China have probably undermined the company's profit from the ink perspective. From the very start it was clear that the fullequipped wi-fi printers from Lexmark as well as the previous models had price tags well below the actual cost of the equipment. The hope to catch up on the sales of supplies did not work out. The only way out was to get out of that business. We suspect that the ink division will be sold to a competitor in the nearest future. The difficult economic situation in Europe, which cannot get over government debts in the EU zone, had a significant impact on the profitability of the American and Japanese vendors. Xerox, Canon and Epson reported weak sales, and, consequently, lower than projected revenues from European countries, which sent the price of their shares down. This negative trend will definitely result in some

serious changes in their structure some of them will probably lay out a number of employees worldwide to stabilize the accounting books, some will throw more money on marketing and will cut elsewhere (R&D, for instance). Despite the problems in the line of OEM companies, the recent-born China-made Pantum is paving slowly its way to the global markets. The low-cost printers sold under the

brand Pantum became popular in the homeland, China, upon the launch in December of 2010 mainly due to its price. The expansion plan of the vendor - Zhuhai-based Seine Technology - is not as aggressive as we may see from an old-time OEM company. This may be to various reasons: from a smaller distribution network to the maturity and saturation of markets. Despite the hardships, Pantum is being promoted in Asia - South Asia, Middle East. the USA during the 2012 fall season. Pantum is not covered by multi-million marketing budgets, which is why it gets to markets through guerrilla marketing ways: heavy discounts in online stores, local press conferences, presence in small electronic stores. Pantum is still small, but its low price may help it occupy an important share in the low-end printer market. Pantum's manufacturer, Seine Technology, is also backed by Lenovo's sister company Legend Capital, which acquired a 15% stake in 2007. This may be an indication that Pantum has come to stay for a long time. Not to forget Kyocera and Brother. Even though these vendors do not put all of their focus on the SOHO and end user segments in their printer portfolio, as the companies get serious stakes in several other areas (copiers, sewing machines, etc.); they want to keep up with the new developments 56

in the market. Their releases are not as numerous, but the new products seem to be in line with the new printer standards in terms of features. It would not be incorrect to say that the global printing market is being changed. The OEM companies keep their eyes open as the profit is falling and the sources of new revenue are limited. There would be no surprise to see more and more OEM vendors to attack their competitors through releases of compatible printing supplies. This is a trend for the aftermarket to watch, as competing with OEMs with their factories, manufacturing capacities and distribution networks will be difficult, especially, for local distributors of compatible and remanufactured supplies.

To be continued. In the next issue of RechargEast, we will provide an overview of the printer equipment released to the market in 2012.
