PUBLISHER'S MESSAGE MAY 2015 Dear readers: In the process of business growth, we often face limitations to expansion because of structural limitations of resources. Here there is an industry term we then use called consolidation. We have definitely witnessed this from several recent industry merges, acquisitions and alliances. It seems to have become an inevitable route in a free market economy that consolidation is the way to gain more market share. However, the aftermarket industry, consisting of many small and medium companies in the local community, will question: Will there be enough space for these local resellers and distributors for continued growth? What kind of role will they play to still gain a competitive edge? In this month’s issue, contributor Ian Elliot, who himself has gone through many of the industry's disruptive changes, offers an in-depth analysis on consolidation in his “Structural Limitations and Weaknesses of a Consolidated Industry” on p. 13, third in a series written for Recharge Asia magazine. In addition to this feature article, we have also Conversation Corner with Ragip Kucukdag, CEO of the PerFIX toner company based in Ankara, Turkey on page 41; as well as Explore the Growing Opportunities in the Emerging Markets—RechargExpo Turkey, 2015, on page 18. Finally, spring has arrived for the year, so enjoy the blossoms of the season, and happy reading!

Cheers!

My recommended book of the month - The Lean Startup: How Today's Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses "The Lean Startup has a kind of inexorable logic, and Ries’ recommendations come as a bracing slap in the face to would-be tech moguls: Test your ideas before you bet the bank on them. Don’t listen to what focus groups say; watch what your customers do. Start with a modest offering and build on the aspects of it that prove valuable. Expect to get it wrong, and stay flexible (and solvent) enough to try again and again until you get it right. It’s a message that rings true to grizzled startup vets who got burned in the Great Bubble and to young filmgoers who left The Social Network with visions of young Zuckerberg dancing in their heads. It resonates with Web entrepreneurs blessed with worldwide reach and open source code. It’s the perfect philosophy for an era of limited resources, when the noun optimism is necessarily preceded by the adjective cautious." —Wired “I make all our managers read The Lean Startup.” —Jeffery Immelt, CEO, General Electric "Eric has created a science where previously there was only art. MARKETING TRENDS

HP and Its Catchwords Marketing has many facets and one is a catchy name for a product or any part of it. Fully aware of this and ready to exploit it to the hilt, HP is continuing to use made-up words to promote its printers. One of these words is JetIntelligence, which, as it suggests, refers to its laserjet devices and ensures a 33% higher yield of professional-quality copies. This is enabled by a tech with another trendy name: ColorSphere 3. The toner technology features an innovative toner structure, including a wax core, a layer of color polymer, and a shiny outer “casing, which allows printers using it to operate at lower temperatures, effectively reducing their power needs, so JetIntelligence printers boast a 53% lower power usage. Among the other catchwords and phrases invented by HP are its page maximizer and anti-fraud technologies, which involve detection (by a chip) of whether the toner cartridge in the device is genuine HP or not. In the former case, the machine engages the JetIntelligence tech, and in the latter, it disengages it. The PrintGauge technology allows for a more accurate prediction of toner capacity, which is always handy, while the JetAdvantage Private Print feature keeps documents to be printed in a cloud and only if a user is authenticated at the printer, do they get printed.

HP Shares Its Vision of the Future HP recently released a video in which it lays out how the future will look according to the company. Smartwatches are just one of the tech gadgets that will be standard equipment in the times ahead, and everything will be connected to the Internet of Things, with devices getting smaller and smaller, and the wearable tech blooming. HP sees all this with relation to its large-scale blended reality project, part of which was the latest hardware piece the company launched, the Sprout. HP’s ultimate aim is to really blend the physical with the virtual reality in a seamless, smooth manner. Another part of its Blended Reality project is, of course, the MultiJetFusion 3D printer, which the company says can print much faster than any other such device. In this segment, however, HP will be focusing on the industrial, not the consumer, sector, believing that the consumer market will remain small and the real growth opportunities lay with 3D printing service providers that will be used by consumers.

Fuji Xerox Praises Investment Climate in Vietnam

Wohlers Associates Publishes 20th Anniversary Edition of Its 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing Industry Report Industry Grows to $4.1 Billion in 2014

Investing in Vietnam has become more attractive than doing so in China, said the president of Fuji Xerox, Tadahito Yamamoto, while on a visit in the country, where Fuji Xerox has a factory. Although the production facility has issues with sourcing materials, the overall climate in Vietnam is better than in China. The main concern in the latter country is rising production costs, particularly labor costs, whereas this is not an issue in Vietnam. As a result, Yamamoto said, Fuji Xerox will be expanding its Vietnam facility, which is already one of its key production hubs in Asia. The plant, located in Hai Pong, has the capacity to produce two mi l l i o n pri n te r s, c op i e r s, a n d multifunctionals annually. The main challenge is the lack of reliable local suppliers, which makes it necessary for Fuji Xerox to import a lot of the raw materials used in the production.

FORT COLLINS, COLORADO, USA—Wohlers Associates, Inc., recognized widely as the leading consulting firm and foremost authority on additive manufacturing and 3D printing worldwide, announced the publication of the Wohlers Report 2015. This annual publication has served as the undisputed industry-leading report on the subject for two decades. Over the 20 years of its publication, many have referred to the report as the "bible" of additive manufacturing (AM) and 3D printing—terms that are used interchangeably. The market for additive manufacturing, consisting of all AM products and services worldwide, grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 35.2% to $4.1 billion in 2014, according to Wohlers Report 2015. The industry expanded by more than $1 billion in 2014, with 49 manufacturers producing and selling industrial-grade AM machines. The CAGR over the past three years (2012–2014) was 33.8%. Wohlers Report 2015 provides an in-depth review and analysis of the industry worldwide. It includes growth, competitive products and services, and the future outlook for the industry. The comprehensive study covers all aspects of AM and 3D printing, including its history, applications, processes, materials, and equipment manufacturers. It covers developments in R&D, investment and collaborative activities in government, academia, and industry, and summarizes the state of the AM industry around the world. Wohlers Associates reports that growth occurred in all segments of the diverse industry, including the low-cost “desktop” 3D printer segment. The use of industrial metal AM systems for demanding production applications in the aerospace and medical markets also grew strongly. The report thoroughly documents the increasingly rich range of technologies, markets, and business models that are emerging within the industry. “The first Wohlers Report was published in April 1996,” said Terry Wohlers, principal consultant and president of Wohlers Associates. “It was 40 pages in length and represented the first-ever published analysis of the industry worldwide. The AM industry represented a mere $295 million in 1995. A lot has changed in 20 years, and we’ve worked hard to document this change. I am proud to say that no other publication comes close to matching the depth and breadth of data and market analysis that is found in our annual report.” Wohlers Report 2015 is an information-rich 314 pages, and includes 39 charts and graphs, 63 tables, and 279 images and illustrations. The report, which sells for US$495, was developed with support from 87 service providers, 40 system manufacturers, and the valuable contributions of 78 co-authors in 31 countries. Wohlers Associates is fortunate to have developed the largest network of friends and contacts in the industry. This access and trust has resulted in a report that offers an unparalleled window into AM and 3D printing. Clicks or Bricks: Cartridge World Reveals Buying Habits of Small Businesses While B2B retailers continue to invest heavily in e-commerce solutions, they may want to put equal attention toward their brick and mortar stores, according to a recent study. “Cartridge World franchisees who adopted our new B2B model are experiencing larger volume sales and ROI through building relationships with business customers. The research confirms our service remains extremely relevant in today’s marketplace.” Research sponsored by Cartridge World, the leading ink and toner retailer and franchisor in the $80 billion printer cartridge industry, set out to determine the methods and preferences of how small to mid-sized businesses order printing supplies. Among other findings, Cartridge World’s study revealed that 76 percent of small to midsized businesses use the internet to order printer cartridges, followed by 58 percent that prefer in-store visits. The research analyzed results based on a sample of 400 respondents from 40 different states and included companies of up to 100 employees. Businesses ranged from computer services to real estate, schools, construction/contracting, law offices, hotels, mortgage brokers and more. “One consumer insight is that while shopping for printing supplies, the online channel remains primary among business customers but a significant market share still prefers a personalized in-store experience,” said William D. Swanson, CEO of Cartridge World North America. “Based on this insight, Cartridge World launched a refresh plan to update more than 500 brick-and-mortar locations in North America. Plus, we’ll continue to deliver bestin-class customer service for our e-commerce buyers.” In addition, the Cartridge World study found that businesses with a higher number of employees placed more importance on customer service and extra services, such as repair of printers and copiers. More than half of office-based businesses (versus homebased) find a higher value in printing products and services being bundled together. Last year, Cartridge World announced that it was shifting its model to better serve business customers by expanding beyond printing products to a full range of B2B printing solutions that fill a need neither big box nor office supply stores meet. As part of the new offering, Cartridge World implemented a Printer Bundle service that supplies businesses with printers, ink, toner and paper along with providing maintenance and service for their printers. The Cartridge World study also found that larger, office-based businesses are more likely to use online purchasing and use multiple purchasing channels, while smaller, homebased businesses do more in-store shopping. “Cartridge World is evolving to best serve our existing and target business customers,” Swanson said. “Cartridge World franchisees who adopted our new B2B model are experiencing larger volume sales and ROI through building relationships with business customers. The research confirms our service remains extremely relevant in today’s marketplace.” Cartridge World is the leading ink and toner retailer and franchisor in the $80 billion printer cartridge industry. Stores offer customers a tremendous cost-saving alternative to printing, offering a 30-percent discount over full-priced OEM cartridges and a 100-percent satisfaction guarantee. Cartridge World has more than 1,200 franchised retail locations in over 50 countries. For information about Cartridge World products or franchise opportunities visit CartridgeWorld.com. Canon Should Reconsider Remanufacturing Stance

Kateeva Strengthens Intellectual Property (IP) Portfolio in U.S., Korea, and China Adds 15 New Patents to Protect Differentiated Production Equipment Technology MENLO PARK, CA-- Kateeva announced that its portfolio of global intellectual property (IP) has grown substantially in the last year. Fifteen new patents (and five allowed applications) were granted during this period. They include 12 in the U.S., two in China, and one in Korea. The patents cover a wide range of innovations, including key technology that differentiates the company's precision deposition platform. Called the YIELDjet™ platform, the unique manufacturing equipment solution uses inkjet printing to mass-produce OLED displays and other complex products.

Canon, like all OEMs, is careful about its patents. However, unlike most, it seems to be excessively focusing on patenting its products, to avoid losing out to remanufacturers of printer cartridges. Yet, argues Rebecca Griffiths, given the importance of cartridge remanufacturing for the sustainability of the printing industry and for keeping costs low, Canon might want to reconsider. Interestingly enough, Canon is all for remanufacturing printers, it’s just when it comes to cartridges that the company is more reluctant, possibly because of the higher costs of remanufacturing these consumables as compared with recycling them. However, many others in the industry have grasped the fact that despite talk about remanufactured cartridges being lower quality than original OEM equipment, the discrepancy is rarely so substantial, especially given the cut price of the remanufactured cartridges. If Canon would decide to start remanufacturing its own cartridges under another brand, says Griffiths, it could push up its profit margins and expand its customer base -- two things that no company would turn down.

Kateeva's diligent IP strategy is driven by a team of patent experts. The new IP protects innovations relating to the following areas: (1) Floating platform printing systems; (2) Production-worthy controlled environment printing systems; (3) Ultralow particle controlled environment printing; (4) Algorithms and monitoring systems for high-uniformity blanket coating; (5) Algorithms and monitoring systems for high-uniformity pixel coating; (6) Ink formulations; and (7) Exploratory printing technologies. These innovations represent core elements of the Kateeva solutions that are helping customers improve manufacturing yields and reduce costs. Kateeva President Dr. Conor Madigan called the IP a snapshot of the breakthrough innovations at Kateeva that are exciting customers and making the company an OLED production equipment leader. He noted, "The IP represents the sum of many parts -- hardware, software, materials, processes, and more -- engineered by our talented team of OLED, ink, printer, semiconductor, and flat-panel display experts. And while our IP is just one measure of the enabling value we provide to customers, we're proud to own the IP, and we're committed to adding constantly to the portfolio." Kateeva's new patents and allowed applications include:

Tech Data Expands HP Offering Distribution company Tech Data has added the full lineup of HP LaserJet multifunctionals in the A3 segment, and now has the full printer offering of the company. In addition to this expansion, the distributor is looking for new managed print services partners to take advantage of the lineup via HP’s focused partner program. The deal comes at a very good time, given that sales of laser multifunctionals in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region are enjoying healthy growth.

Lexmark vs. Impression -What It’s All About The litigation proceedings brought by Lexmark against Impression Products concer n the US company’s ink cartridges and more specifically its Return Program, which stipulates that the ink cartridge for a printer can only be used once after purchase and then returned to Lexmark for recycling. According to the company, the program is part of its efforts to protect its revenues, a lot of which come from cartridge sales, and its reputation. These three aspects, Lexmark claims, are harmed by remanufacturers and distributors of remanufactured cartridges. The court case is actually part of a whole series, the last installment, in a way. All the other defendants that Lexmark claimed infringed its patents reached settlements. Impression, however, claims that sales of cartridges outside the US are not subject to US regulation, even though Lexmark has noted that its Return Program is “regionalized”, meaning that cartridges sold in Europe can only work with printers sold in Europe. The case will be heard by the full panel of the US Federal Circuit Court later this year.

Copiers Northwest Buys Synergy Office Systems Seattle-based Copiers Northwest has acquired Synergy Office Systems, a regional supplier of Canon and Samsung office supplies in Oregon and has been in business since 1989. For both companies, the deal is an expansion opportunity, but especially for Copiers Northwest, which has not had a presence in central Oregon, where Synergy operates, so far. For Synergy, on the other hand, the deal will provide new technical and training resources, improving its customer service capabilities. According to Synergy’s chief, Bob Browning, the company had been approached a few times with acquisition offers over the last few years, but the one that came from Copiers Northwest was the first “that made sense”.

3D Printing Market to Swell to $5.2 Bln in 2015 Research company Canalys has forecasted that the size of the 3D printing market will grow to $5.2 billion this year, a whopping 56% annual increase. This includes sales of the printers themselves and all associated paraphernalia. The compound annual growth rate for the industry is estimated at 44% for the period until 2019, with revenue in that year seen at $20.2 billion. The drivers behind this expected growth are the growing diversity of printing materials and methods as well as constantly improving print speeds. As for the leading target industries for 3D printing, healthcare, aerospace, and carmaking continue going strong. A great number of new players are also expected to come on the stage, mostly from Asia, which will in all likelihood threaten the dominant position of market leaders such as Stratasys and 3D Systems.

HP to Start Shipping MJF 3D Printers by End-2016 HP is planning to start commercially producing a line of business-focused 3D printing using the multi jet fusion technology by the end of next year. The first target group of the company will be small and medium enterprises, as well as 3D printing service providers. Industry-wise, the machines will be particularly useful for players in the fields of aerospace and carmaking, of course, but also in consumer products. According to HP’s head of 3D printing, Scott Schiller, there are a number of advantages to the company’s entry into this industry. First, it will encourage more investors to trust the tech as a sensible investment because of its sheer size and reputation. Second, the presence of a company such as HP in this field will stimulate smaller firms to apply more rigid quality standards. All in all, the longterm outlook for HP’s 3D activities seems to be optimistic, with materials emulation and an increasing number of applications ahead.

Auto Industry, Schools, Medicine Drive 3D Printing in India The 3D printing market in India is expected to reach $79 million by 2021, mainly thanks to the automotive industry, the education sector, and the healthcare industry. Although the technology is still new and unfamiliar in the country, the expiry of important patents will encourage the emergence of new local players, according to 6Wresearch cited by Computerworld India, and the rising adoption of the technology. Another driver for the industry will be the “Make in India” campaign launched last year to encourage local production. India is clearly a growth market, although demand for 3D printing service for now is most likely to come from the carmaking industry, where rapid prototyping comes in very handy. However, notes 6Wresearch, applications such as crafts, arts, customized apparel and footwear items, and fashion accessories are also a potential growth area for the technology. At the moment, the 3D printers in India come from China, the US, and Germany, but this is expected to change dramatically over the next six years.

3D Printer Scanners in Smartphones -- The Next Big Thing? Researchers from the California Institute of Technology are working on creating a miniature 3D scanner that could be fitted on smartphones, so the owner could scan any object they like and send the scan to a 3D printing company to have it printed. The device in question is called a nanophotonic coherent imager, which is fitted onto a cheap silicon chip, no more than a square millimeter but the definition it can achieve is unparalleled, Caltech says. This fact, and the size of the future scanner could ensure its success and wide adoption: 3D printers need very precise scans of objects to print them accurately, and at the moment the only machines that are capable of doing this are large 3D scanners. The tech on which the new device is based is called LIDAR, and it uses laser beams to illuminate an object and scan its dimensions, color, etc. The nanophotonic coherent imager has a multitude of LIDARs in it, so it can illuminate and scan an object from more than one perspective. The researchers are hopeful that their invention will lead to the wider adoption of 3D printing among the general population.

MARKET SEGMENTS

Boeing Steadily Betting on 3D Printing Boeing recently filed a patent application for a 3D printing manufacturing process for aircraft spare parts. The technology is not new to the aviation giant,it has been using it for almost two decades now. However, its growing advancements are apparently making it increasingly attractive. At the moment, Boeing 3D prints some 300 different non-metal component parts for its aircraft, and seems to be set on increasing this number, and significantly at that. 3D printed parts are much easier to replace should a fault or a break occur -- all you need is a 3D printer, after all. Boeing’s patent application also addresses the issue of time: when a client needs to have a part replaced, it takes a lot of time for this part to be shipped, even if it is available in Boeing’s spare parts inventory. With 3D printing, these waiting times will be greatly reduced, and, consequently, so will costs for the clients and Boeing alike.

3D Printers -- Home Recycling Stations? A lot of 3D printers work with plastic as printing material, so what prevents them from being used as household recycling stations, saving money and energy? Apparently, in the US this is the lack of adequate recycling codes. There are six groups of plastics and resins, and a seventh one includes all that does not fall within any of the other six. The problem with this is that some of the materials that fall within that seventh group would be usable in a 3D printer, and others will not. A team from Michigan Tech has undertaken to re-label plastic waste to make it possible for 3D printer owners to use their machines for a good cause. The team is basing its work on the Chinese plastic labeling system, which includes as many as 140 codes. The researchers have also created free downloadable scripts, from where you can print the new labels. In addition to sustainability, this new application of 3D printers will make the technology cheaper for household users because branded filaments as a ruleare costly.

3D Printing In for Consolidation? The 3D printing industry has reached a stage where consolidation is the next step, says market observer Panos Mourdoukoutas in an article for Forbes. The grounds for his argument are twofold. On the one hand, he says, the valuation of sector players is much more reasonable now than it was a couple of years ago. On the other hand, and more importantly, 3D printing companies are shifting from a direct-sales business model to a service-focused, which, according to Mourdoukoutas, is more appropriate for this industry. As a result of this shift, sector players will be better placed to manage the fast evolution of the technology, which is now leaving a lot of potential customers reluctant to buy such a machine. These two factors will make a lot of 3D printer makers a tasty morsel for the likes of Google and Microsoft, among other tech majors.

3D Systems Expands China Footprint One of 3D industry’s majors, 3D Systems, recently announced the acquisition of Easyway Design and Manufacture Co., a Chinese company that sells and services 3D printers, with operations across the country. No financial details were announced. The general manager of Easyway said the company was excited to become a part of one of the leaders in the 3D printing niche, and it was looking forward to introducing the full range of 3D Systems’ products in China. For its part, Easyway will bring into the deal its close ties with the local automotive, educational, and medical sectors, three major drivers for 3D printing globally, ensuring robust sales for 3D Systems’ printers.

GE Presents 3D Printed Jet Engine Component General Electric has presented the first jet engine component created with 3D printing technology and approved by the Federal Aviation Administration. The part, called T25 housing, would have taken a year to build a prototype for using conventional technology, the company noted. Instead, the cobalt-chrome alloy component was built with the laser sintering method, allowing for the part to be one whole rather than a number of parts fitted together. Among the other advantages of 3D printing for such components is that they can be made lighter and that 3D printing can reproduce much more complex shapes.

Startup Takes 3D Printing World By Storm A company until recently unknown, Carbon 3D, has presented a superfast 3D printing process based on polymers that offers print speeds between 25 to 100 times faster than what other 3D printers can achieve. Carbon 3D has called its innovative technology Continuous Liquid Interface Production. It uses light and oxygen to basically fuse an object from a pool of melted resin but continuously rather than layer by layer, as has been done until now. The technology certainly is a game-changer for the industry and only time will tell what all of its possible implications will be. For now, it’s clear that it has dealt with one of the major drawbacks of 3D printing, the speed, but the range of applications of this new tech is still to be determined.

XYZprinting Focuses on China Schools Taiwanese XYZprinting, a major regional 3D printing company, recently said it is viewing China as its main market for the near term, as is making inroads into the huge economy, focusing mainly on the educational sector. As soon as next year, CEO Simon Shen says, the company expects to ship half of its machines to China, the share equalling those sold in the US. In 2014, the total sales of XYZprinting reached 30,000, and plans are for this figure to swell to 100,000-120,000 in 2015. The Chinese success of the company will be greatly helped by Beijing policies for the educational sector, including the installation of a 3D printer in each of the 400,000 elementary schools across the country. Speaking at the presentation of its new machine, the da Vinci Jr. 1.0, Shen said the company has already started supplying 3D printers to local schools. As a result of these tactics, XYZprinting will most likely come into the black this year, Shen also said. In addition to state policies in China, profits will be driven by the wider adoption of 3D printing technology globally. Also, the Taiwanese firm is not only relying on China, but is expanding into South Korea, Turkey, and Iran, selling around 200 3D printers there on a monthly basis.

New 3D Printer Does Job in Minutes An Australian startup has designed a 3D printer that can print an object out of liquid resin in a matter of minutes, not the hours it takes most other machines. Gizmo 3D will be marketing its product via Kickstarter. Interestingly, the new tech that Gizmo 3D is using is based on direct light processing used widely in 3D printing, but has been modified so the print job is done all at once, rather than l a y e r b y l a y e r. The Australian company will launch a lineup of three models this coming fall, with prices ranging from $2,500 to $6,000.

PUBLISHER'S MESSAGE

Carbon 3D with Newest Tech Gets $10 Mln Investment
