AUTUMN SEMESTER 2023

V-DALAS BUDDIES
Welcome to V-Dala!
Västmanlands-Dala nation is one of Uppsala's largest nations. What distinguishes us is a broad association life with something for most people. Here you can try everything from choir singing, dancing, orchestra playing, sewing evenings, spexing and the city's widest range of sports activities. We also have a large number of accommodations for our members in central locations in Uppsala. If you feel your wallet is getting thinner and thinner, there are plenty of job opportunities in the cloakroom, pub and kitchen - or maybe you'd like to try serving at a dinner party? We are so glad that you have come to our nation and hope that you will find something that suits you!
As a new student (recentior/recce), it can sometimes feel overwhelmingly difficult to make sense of all the information that meets you at the start of the semester. You are not alone in feeling this way! That's why we exist in the Contact Committee. Our job is to help you find your way around Uppsala and the nation. If there is anything you are wondering about, just come by the registration desk or send us an email and we will guide you. Welcome home!

GREETINGS FROM THE INSPECTOR
Dear recentior!
A warm welcome to Västmanlands-Dala Nation and Uppsala University. Nation life and Uppsala University are intimately linked to each other. The nations have a 400-year history and Uppsala University is the oldest in the Nordic region. The university is characterized by outstanding research and education.
As a member of the V-Dala Nation, you can take part in this rich history, contribute to the development of the nation and gain experience and make contacts for the benefit of your life The nation offers a wide range of activities with different focuses. Perhaps you have already heard about the traditional gasks and other festivities, but the nation also arranges activities in singing, music, sports, spex and theater. V-Dala encourages you to actively participate in these and other activities, and that you eventually get involved and take a position of trust
Among the nation's five thousand members, you are sure to find good friends and a rewarding community that spans ages and educational backgrounds. By actively participating and taking on assignments, you will develop your ability to collaborate and lead, which will surely benefit you and others throughout your professional life.

I look forward to meeting you!
Johan Tysk V-Dala's inspector Professor of Mathematics Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor on external relations Uppsala UniversityGREETINGS FROM THE PROINSPECTOR
Dear recentior!
You are truly to be congratulated. You are facing the most fun years of your life. You will study something you are interested in and get to know lots of new people in the beautiful student city of Uppsala. And you are extra lucky: you are fortunate enough to belong to the Västmanlands-Dala nation. I have been given the honor of being the proinspector of this great nation. Since I come from Borlänge, I feel particularly at home in the nation's geographical location - Borlänge is on the border between Dalarna's colorful folk culture and Västmanland's quiet Bergslag forests.
V-Dala is not only an exceptionally rich nation, but also an exceptionally pleasant one. And almost all the work that makes it so nice is done by the students themselves
There's a pub, lunch, and café And parties. Like the Gascon. You dress up, eat a three-course dinner, drink well, listen to funny speeches And there is singing and playing - from the stage and from the food tables, so get the V-Dala songbook!
The Spring Ball is even more festive. Everyone is dressed in festive costumemany also in costumes. And just as the May sun rises, the V-Dala nation choir stands on the steps of the Carolina Rediviva University Library and sings in the spring. It doesn't get more beautiful than that.
When you want to take it easy, you can go to V-Dala to study and borrow books from the library You can make an impact at Landskap (the nation's "parliament"), or by joining one of the boards, committees and associations.
And don't forget: the nation is what its members make of it - and now you are one of us So once again, congratulations - and welcome. I look forward to seeing you all this fall!
Katarina Barrling V-Dala's Pro-inspector Associate Professor in Political Science Uppsala University
GREETINGS FROM OUR FIRST CURATOR
Welcome to Uppsala but especially to Västmanlands-Dala nation!
My name is Linn Mattsson and I am the nation's First Curator. First curator is perhaps a vague term for those who have just arrived in town, but in short, you could say that I am the nation's chairman. You can turn to me with questions no matter what they are, and if you have questions I can't answer, I know someone who can!
At Västmanlands-Dala nation you can do everything and more. Whether it is hanging out with the orchestra with ballet, working a shift in the pub or playing D&D with the Daladrakarna, there is something for everyone that can make your study time fantastic.
The welcome evening on September 18 is a great opportunity to talk to all the nation's associations and committees and see where you feel you want to be involved.

I hope that you, like me, take advantage of the opportunities that come with being a student here During my time at the nation, I've gotten to know people across academic boundaries, had the opportunity to run a restaurant, live in one of the nation's 1228 student apartments, be a staff manager, scrub bars and find my absolute best friends for life.
Don't forget - universities may provide education, but nations provide education.
So don't hesitate - join us!
Hope to see you at the nation!

GREETINGS FROM OUR SECOND
CURATOR
Hello dear Recce!
Uppsala's student life is unique. I still remember what the first few weeks in this magical student city felt like. There was excitement, great expectations and experiences like entering a maxed-out national dance floor shaking with joy and meeting new friends with equally sparkling eyes. The first beer in the pub, the first home-baked bun in the café and a first rehearsal with the dance group.
Nations have so much to offer that I can promise there is something for everyone Is there something imaginative you dream of doing at a nation? Come to the curator's office during our opening hours and tell us! The great thing about getting involved in student life is that we students are the ones who come up with ideas and realize them.
For me, Västmanlands-Dala Nation is a community and I am so happy to welcome you to it. Take advantage of everything that is on offer and get involved in what feels extra fun. The nations are by students for students and together we realize the dream of student time and its wonderful moments.

Welcome to
Uppsala student

V A L B O R G I N U P P S A L A
Celebrating Valborg in Uppsala is quite drastically different from other places in Sweden - possibly Lund is somewhat on the same level as Uppsala, but not really - it's like comparing apples and rotten oranges, which is a common feature when it comes to Uppsala versus Lund as student cities.

The first thing you should know about the last April celebra here is that we don't do it one or two days, no in Upp it is celebrated for at least three days starting with Skvalborg, then comes Kvalborg and after that Valborg. If you are unlucky enough to stand on your fe after these days, it may happen that there will be a Finalborg followed by Katastrofalborg, but no on remembers Katastrofalborg so it's best to stop there.
But what do you do as a student during the Valborg week? It depends a bit on what the nations have arranged, but the concept is about the same as going to a festival. You wander from one fun event to another Eat brunch at some nation, go to concerts with established artists, visit pubs where you can eat and drink something good or compete in a pub quiz, maybe go for a picnic in The Ekonomikum park (Ecoparken) to take a break and then go to a nightclub and dance the night away.
Whatever you do, chances are you'll have a lot of fun, but don't forget to start planning your celebration in time, and above all, drink every other water!
