01 STREAMS BEYOND THE ARCHES
LA4111L Design VII: Advanced Landscape Architecture Laboratory
DATE: Dec 2024
LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA
This project nestles under the iconic 6th Street Viaduct, embodying the historic resilience of Boyle Heights, the dynamic flow of the LA River, and the transformative potential of education and outreach. The site aims to create a step towards overcoming the socioeconomic challenges by designing spaces that respect the cultural strength of the Boyle Heights community, and the creative spirit of the Arts District. By reflecting the river’s ever lasting ability to bring people together and move things forward, the project works to house education and outreach programs that empower residents and promote collaboration, to create a thriving, inclusive future for the river-loving communities around them.
Presented at Disney Imagineering December 2024

This diagram illustrates the spatial distribution of industrial, residential, and commercial buildings surrounding the 6th Street Viaduct. It highlights the diverse land uses and their relationships to the project site, providing insight into the community’s dynamics and informing design strategies aimed at addressing socioeconomic challenges and fostering connectivity between Boyle Heights and the Arts District.

This diagram maps the location of the LA River, the preserved monument featuring pieces of the old 6th Street Bridge, and the area once occupied by a citrus grove. Together, these elements narrate the site’s transformation over time, reflecting its industrial, agricultural, and cultural layers. This analysis serves as a foundation for a design that bridges historical preservation, environmental considerations, and community resilience.

Under the 6th Street Viaduct connects the historic Boyle Heights community with the vibrant Arts District, reflecting the area’s cultural resilience and transformation. It emphasizes education and outreach, serving as a stepping stone for longtime residents of Boyle Heights to overcome socioeconomic challenges while fostering creativity among young artists. The design honors the past while addressing contemporary needs, integrating the themes of resilience and the river into a unifying community space.

LA 3121L Design VI: Applied Site Design
DATE: May 2024
LOCATION: South Gate, CA
Our site is envisioned as a dynamic hub where community engagement, educaton, and nature converge seamlessly. Divided into two distinct zones, it offers both a serene educatonal area and an inviting public space. In the biodiverse sensory garden, lush vegetaton surrounds visitors, enveloping them in a multi-sensory experience that reconnects them with the natural world. Here, stadium seating provides a communal space for gatherings and events, fostering interacton and enjoyment. Meanwhile, the educational area, enclosed by native chaparral plants, serves as a living classroom where the rich history of South Gate comes to life. Through immersive learning experiences, our site strives to inspire a deeper appreciation for our environment and heritage while fostering a sense of community connection and pride.

The render showcases an educational space enclosed by wooden louvers, offering a balance between privacy and openness to the surrounding chaparral environment. The dense plant life creates an immersive connection to nature, while the walls provide engaging information on local plant families such as riparian, chaparral, and coastal sage scrub. The design emphasizes both learning and a serene interaction with the natural landscape.

The render illustrates a lively public area featuring stadium seating that fosters community gatherings and interaction. Adjacent to the seating, a sloped lawn invites children to roll and play, adding an element of fun and

ARCH 149: Design Fundamentals & Principles Final
DATE: Dec 2022
LOCATION: El Segundo, CA
The name “El Segundo” was adopted in 1911 when Chevron built its second refinery. This is where the term El Segundo comes from, which derives in Spanish for, “the second”. This city is known for its history of space and aircrafts, holding major aerospace companys such as Aerospace Corp, Boeing Co, SpaceX, and LAX. Because of this iconic history, it was almost certain to create a design that revolves around the aerospace theme that the city is widely known for.
This project is the culmination of learning how architecture not only can address issues, but also create yet to be discovered opportunities in the user experience. The objective for this project has been to introduce us to some of the various steps involved in considering, analyzing and developing a design solution that addresses challenges and fills a need for a particular site. It also demonstrates how the artistic expression is essential and distinguishes architecture from other professions, such as engineering and planning, associated with the built environment.
Presented at El Segundo City Hall May 25, 2023

CONSTRAINTS OPPORTUNITIES
- Police facility due south, casts shadow over plaza
- One plaza entrance for handicapped
- No handicap entrance on east side
- Create experience from end to end that tells a story
- El Segundo has muliple history topics for concept
- Outdoor plaza for workers
- Attraction for farmers market

SUN & WIND DIAGRAM
Based on the sun path, the plaza gets continuous light throughout the day. City hall and the police department lack longer overhangs which results in less shaded areas in the plaza. This means it gave me opportunities to create shaded areas for the users to interact with.
The prevailing winds coming from south west are partially blocked by the police department but still provides minimal wind circulation. On the other hand, the seasonal winds have a difficult time reaching this plaza due to city hall and other surrounding existing buildings acting as a barrier for the warm winds.

The civic plaza is known to be the heart of El Segundo. It was important to understand and create a sort of hierarchy in design that paints that picture of the city. Based off of the initial site visit and site plan, there were many opportunities to create large gatherings for the users of El Segundo.

Because of El Segundo’s title “Aerospace Capital of the World”, it was most certain to base my design off of an abstract airplane wing that acts as a multi-functional stage for assembly and/or gathering, which is something that the community currently lacks.
Located at the heart of the city, this proposal has the intentions of being a monument of a plaza that anchors down El Segundo. With its respected history within the concept of this design, the users are now able to visit the park to learn more about the city with its ability for pop up kiosks and art walls for the users to interact with.

The story being the plaza starts with the concept of “astrionics” which is the science and technology put into aircrafts. Metaphorically speaking the aircraft being El Segundo, the astrionics would be the users itself. The three basic stages of flight are as follows:
Takeoff: The users are greeted with a much needed “El Segundo” sign that reels the users into the plaza by walking up a slope.
Cruise: The main part of the plaza is a central green that has pas sive play for children and a multi-functional space with buckwheat for the blue butterflies.
Landing: A step lower in grade where we have stadium seating for employees to enjoy lunch or gather.

We were lucky enough to be offered the chance to present this project in front of El Segundos planning comissioners. It was an honor because we were able to receive feedback and critiques about what the city has the potential for. With this idea, the wings of the plaza could represent a hierarchy at the heart of the city.
