She Builds: Nashville AFFILIATE The path to reinvention isn’t an easy one. It’s difficult to rise up from a low point and begin to rebuild your life when you doubt your self-worth. It’s even tougher when what has happened to you has isolated you from the love and support of your family and community. Thistle Farms helps women in Nashville, Tennessee begin again. From too young an age, these women endured

education, job training, and support. The residence building itself must be a sanctuary, so the women can learn to trust others and themselves. It must exude joy and comfort, so they can build the confidence they need to move forward. It must be a restorative environment, so they can create a community of mutual support. All in all, it needs to be a place where healing and love can flourish. Thistle Farm’s largest residence was not everything it needed to be. A shortage of staff time had left the house in disarray. Rooms where the women should have been able to socialize were cluttered with much-needed but disorganized donated goods. The backyard, which should have been a cheerful space, was a dreary, bare dirt lot. Wear and tear throughout the residence kept it from feeling like a home, allowing Rebuilding Together Nashville to be more ambitious in the level of repair. Hal said, “We knew we had to spruce up the place. But, every time

recruited local volunteers, including staff from the office of Mayor Megan Barry, the city’s first female mayor. And, with Nashville at the center of country music, it was no surprise to see stars like Ayla Brown, Steve Dorian, Halfway to Hazard, The Railers, and Julia Sheer wield hammers and paint brushes. Over the course of the She Builds workday, volunteers and Thistle Farms’ residents transformed the backyard into a beautiful garden that serves as a both a retreat for personal reflection and a cozy spot for spending time together. Volunteers also created a room where donated goods can be stored and organized, and later put into care packages for women survivors. The home’s front porch and foyer received special attention during the rebuild, with a fresh coat of paint creating a warm

welcome. In the foyer, the Listed Sisters hung a mirror etched with Thistle Farms’ mantra, ‘Love Heals.’ “Rebuilding Together Nashville was a machine,” Hal said. “They did everything. It was completely stress free for our staff and for the women who live in that home.” Becky Carter, executive director of Rebuilding Together Nashville during the project, saw something more. “Something magical happened that day,” she said. “The women residents were excited, ready to sweat and get hands on with the rebuild. They seemed surprised that so many people from their community cared. The rebuild was important to them, but it was really the outpouring of love from everyone in the community that lifted their spirits.” 6 Rebuilding Together | 2016 in Review

At the end of the day, a man approached Paul. The man’s white button-down shirt was unwrinkled and his skin was creased with age. He looked up at Paul and asked, “Can you take a walk with me? I gotta tell you something.” As they ambled down the sidewalk, the man said, “I’ve lived in Glenville for 50 years. In all that time, I have never seen anything like this. I have never seen people come together and do something for somebody else like what I experienced today. If we can do this again, and if we can keep doing this, we’ve got a shot.” Paul said, “His words hit me like a ton of bricks. I realized there’s such power in what we do.” That’s the kind of moment that shows Rebuilding Together’s true strength: to empower people to recognize that they can make a difference. “It doesn’t require a lifelong commitment,” Paul

JUNE
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. WEEK/DAY OF SERVICE
VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS POST REPAIRS
Members and alumni of Rebuilding Together’s AmeriCorps program dedicated the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service to rebuilding homes and revitalizing communities in Lafayette, LA. The event, hosted by Rebuilding Together Acadiana, brought together more than 100 AmeriCorps members serving with Rebuilding Together, along with program alumni, and affiliate leaders from 11 different states. These members and alumni provided a collective 3,000 hours of service over the course of the week, improving ten homes and a community center in Lafayette community.
FEBRUARY 21ST ANNUAL KICKOFF TO REBUILD
APRIL NATIONAL REBUILDING MONTH National Rebuilding Month is a call to service during the entire month of April each year, highlighting the critical need for home repairs to the existing housing stock. Nearly 20,000 volunteers served on close to 700 affiliate-led rebuild projects throughout the country during the month of April.
Rebuilding Together hosted our annual Super Bowl-sanctioned Kickoff to Rebuild event in San Francisco, the host city of Super Bowl L. Hundreds of volunteers from Lowe’s and other partners joined current and former NFL players to provide critical home repairs in a San Francisco neighborhood. Six homeowners received critical home repairs in addition to Jelani House, a residential substance abuse treatment facility for women with children.
JUNE SHE BUILDS Rebuilding Together joined forces with HGTV and country music stars to launch SheBuilds a new initiative encouraging women to serve other women in their community while learning critical home repair skills. In Nashville, volunteers provided repairs to a Thistle Farm residence supporting women transitioning out of sex work. Subsequent SheBuilds projects were held in New York City and Seattle.

JULY HGTV’S BROTHER VS. BROTHER HGTV’s Property Brothers donated the proceeds from the competition show Brother vs. Brother to Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada. Funds were used to provide repair to a Boys & Girls Club including flooring, roofing, landscaping, painting and other major rehabilitations. A technology center wit state-of-the-art equipment, educational software platforms and tools for staying safe online was also added to the center.
AMERICORPS WEEK Forty-six new AmeriCorps members, representing twenty-three affiliates, came to Raleigh, NC, to learn about Rebuilding Together, our work and AmeriCorps. Throughout the week, the AmeriCorps members built a strong network of support that they would draw on throughout the rest of their term, sharing best practices and enthusiasm between affiliates. AmeriCorps members received a full day of healthy housing training that combined classroom style instruction in construction principles with hands-on modules. Members practiced installing grab bars, wall anchors, flooring, and more. Rebuilding Together of the Triangle hosted the AmeriCorps members for a two-day rebuilding project, putting the healthy housing principles they had just learned into action in four homes in Chapel Hill.
