Staff Writer o compete in a battle of wits takes guts and finesse. There is plenty of sweat and tears from the enduring hours spent up on the hot stage. ComedySportz is a challenge worthy of only Roncalli’s funniest students. Participants equip themselves with original jokes, characters, and puns to compete with other schools around Indiana such as Carmel, Lebanon, and Center Grove in order to win matches and compete for a prestigious trophy. Junior Andy Reel is a first-time competitor in the adventurous sport, and is often seen “practicing” in the hallways as he crack jokes to friends. “Our team is very well rounded. We’re a good mix of powerful, dynamic characters and strong, supporting characters. Everyone also has their different specialties, whether it be rhyming, puns, character, physicality, different voices and accents, or rhythm,” said Reel. Likewise, the team works to prepare themselves for playing in front of live audiences, never entirely knowing what topic they’ll have to make a joke about next. Led by Ms. Kim Buckley, English teacher and co-director of the fall musical and spring play, the team works to strengthen their improvisational skills. “I’ve been a loyal fan for years. I love the fine arts and my favorite form of comedy is improv. I am amazed at what a trained improviser can do with a small suggestion and their imagination. I’m so happy to help these amazing artists in a small way,” said Buckley. To join the team isn’t for the faint-of-heart. It takes prowess to be able to make jokes and make sure all ages can accept them and appreciate them as well. Roncalli’s team molds each situation into a unique and completely improvised scenario for the audience. In his second year as a competitor, junior Michael McClellan has seen a team that has grown to reach its full potential.

“Roncalli is different because we are really our own brand. Many of the other teams all have these odd niches that they tend to stick too, but we have gotten good enough to be able to fit anywhere we want,” said McClellan. ComedySportz works to bring goofy smiles to the loyal fans that attend the match. There’s much to prepare for on the competitor’s part, but it would not be a sport without practice. The next competition will be Wednesday, May 13 at 7 p.m. in the RHS auditorium.

$12,000 check was presented last week to St. Elizabeth/ Coleman Pregnancy & Adoption Services by Mr. Chuck Weisenbach and members of the RHS Pro-Life group. Money was collected each week during Lent for the Lenten Almsgiving Project. StuCo raised just over $3,200 from ticket sales for the senior/faculty basketball game and an additional $3,231 was donated by the math department, which were raised funds selling Pi Day t-shirts. The goal for this year’s Lenten Almsgiving project was $8,000. “Once again the Roncalli Family “Makes It Happen.” The folks from St. Elizabeth/Coleman were overwhelmed by the generosity of the Roncalli students and could not thank us enough,” said Mr. Bob Tully, vice president of mission and ministry. St. Elizabeth/Coleman Pregnancy & Adoption Services provides life-long services to empower women and families of all faiths by offering support, compassion, and assistance to expectant mothers and adoptive parents. The agency became a part of Catholic Charities Indianapolis in 2008.
