nter the doors of Roncalli on a typical school day and you will be greeted with the hustle and bustle of students rushing to classes. Keep walking through the main floor until you come to room 115, the Resource and Life Academy area. In a quiet room, a small group of students meet for class. Here, students learn and interact with teachers about lifestyle and social skills. On this particular day, the students are preparing for Walkathon. The lesson is a crash course on what occurs during Walkathon. Everything is covered, from who to walk with, what to wear, and how the day will unfold. Each lesson goes like that, some lifestlyle and social learning, followed by math, English, and religion. These students are in the Life Academy, which is a highly individualized program for students with cognitive disabilities. The curriculum is tailored for each student who works on social skills, daily living skills, and mastering independence. The program is special though, because they are also receiving a Catholic education. “Parents of students with cognitive disabilities wanted them to attend a Catholic school, just like their siblings. It was the same desire that all parents have,” said Life Academy coordinator, Mrs. Michelle Roberts. “At first, the resource program (STARS) worked with these students. Over time, it became clear that a whole program was needed to best serve those students.” The Life Academy is a unique program. Roncalli is one of the few Catholic schools in the country that provide opportunities for students with cognitive disabilities. According to Roberts, since Roncalli is a Catholic school with the Holy Spirit working through it, the program is given another advantage. “The greatest thing about the Life Academy is the school we’re in,” said Roberts. “Roncalli students go above and beyond to include the Life Academy students in all parts of the school. Rebels in every grade are examples of how we can all see Christ in those around us, not to mention to simply have fun together!”
