Time flies when you’re having fun! The 2nd Quarter has passed in a blink of an eye. One year to lead and we’ve got 6 more months to go!

Congratulations to Four National Executive Vice Presidents for your dedication and outstanding leadership in leading your Area Teams to successfully wrap up your respective Area Conventions. 2022 is a year we embrace the new norm, many of our leaders and members were excited and anticipated the return of physical conventions! We had the physical General Assemblies, workshops, seminars and competitions reminding most of us the excitement and engagement of being able to gather physically. Everythingfelt so familiar but yet so new. Many new resolutions were passed in the Area General Assemblies moving into the post pandemic area where these valuable recommendations will be brought to the National Board Meeting in July for further discussion.

JCI President Argenis Angulo’s four days visitation in Malaysia also made another history for JCI Malaysia. He travelled to 4 Areas in 4 days, to visit our local leaders, to motivate and inspire our members, to share his journey and to promote the Declaration of Human Duties Proposal that will be presented to the United Nations for review.

We have finally concluded 2022 JCI ASPAC with a total of 245 registered delegates from JCI Malaysia. Thanks to all the delegates who have collectively made this year’s ASPAC a wonderful memory with the unique hybrid experience in ReSkills HQ. Our JCI VP assigned Zolbadral Batmunkh’s presence in Malaysia’ Hybrid Station also made our members feel proud and honoured.

Well done to IA Team members Shirley, Hewson, Verine, Louis, Deric, all the National Colleagues and Global Networkers under the leadership of National IA Commission Chairman Bruce Ban and Ex-Officio Zelt Kueh. Congratulations to all the awards winners for your outstanding performance elevating JCI Malaysia to be proud on the international stage. I would like to encourage all of you to continue empowering the enterprising young leaders to make this world a better place!

2022 JCI Malaysia National President Message from JCI Sen. Ellen Lu

The first ever National Board Retreat and Review took place in Miri, Sarawak. It was a super fruitful and busy weekend. We had a poolside team building, Movie Night GMM, BBQ Steamboat, lots of food and some “drinks”. The team also visited Miri City Town Hall where we get one of the best sea view and city view of Miri City. We also conducted our review meeting done past midnight with the end in mind on aligning our collective efforts towards realising our 2022 National Goals! Most importantly, I enjoyed the laughter and bonding sessions that brings everyone closer to each other.

We also concluded Joint National Board Meeting with JCI Malaysia Twinning National Organizations with JCI Taiwan, JCI Indonesia, JCI Philippines and JCI Singapore. What I can say is, the 2nd quarter is nothing short compared to the 1st quarter and I foresee it to be better and better in the coming two quarters. Keep up the great energy and good work and I hope to see all of you at the top! Because Leading is our Duty, JCI Malaysia Take the Lead!

Greetings JCI Malaysia fellow members,

Dear Passionate Readers!

It felt like yesterday when JCI President Argenis officiated the circulation of our first edition of e-Pemimpin for 2022. In a blink of an eye, another quarter has passed and wonderful things happened inJCI Malaysia. I hope this edition of the pemimpin can safekeep and report many milestones of our Organization within this period.

Here we come the second quarter of 2022. The past three months have been full of exciting and memorable events to capture both the hearts and minds of our young active citizens and lovely audiences. In this second issue of Pemimpin, not only we will cover the events conducted by JCI Malaysia, but also the interview sessions with all our Past National Presidents plus our JCI President JCI Senator Argenis Angulo! Head over to the pages now to get some excellent pieces of advices and tips from these wonderful leaders!

Having a great start leveled up the playing field and I am excited to see many initiatives slowly falling into place and the patience and dedication of our Local Leaders collectively moving towards the same goal. Thank you for the participation of our Local Presidents during the “Hello NP” session at all the respective Area Conventions. Your valuable input and feedback will definitely serve as constructive references in aligning our National Organization towards excellence.

Next, I would like to congratulate to all the four Areas for the successful Area Conventions and also all of the award recipients during the Convention. I believe that this healthy competition will continue to empower one another to outperform ourselves time after time. The Hybrid ASPAC station in ReSkills HQ is also a memorable and unique milestone for JCI Malaysia where we are honoured to have the presence of JCI Vice President assigned Zolbadral Batmunkh in Malaysia during the whole conference.

Thanks to the entire team for pulling off yet another iconic event that will be remembered for the many years to come.

Finally, thank you for the support given to myself and JCI Malaysia till date as these small encouragements serve as a great motivation for me to strive further and higher. I wish everyone a wonderful year ahead and congratulation to the editorial team on this compilation of JCIM e-Pemimpin. Because Leading is Our Duty, together we Take the LEAD.

I am blessed to have the opportunity to work with a team of national officers and members who are always that supportive and passionate about the work that they do. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my Creative Director Rebecca Lee for her relentless support and assistance! She has been putting in so much efforts in assisting me and the team.

Following the re-opening of international borders in April 2022, people are expected to return to physical work and start travelling again. I hope everyone is enjoying it, but remember to always comply to SOPs when travelling or organizing activities. I wish everyone a pleasant journey back in time with these sharings in the Pemimpin!

Shirley Pang: JCI Senator Argenis, Welcome To Malaysia! Thank you for taking the time to meet with us today for this interview. First of all, could you please share with us your JCI life?

JCI Senator Argenis: My JCI life is a long and amazing story of change. I discovered and joined JCI in 2001, I was watching TV and a local journalist was interviewing my local president who talked about the chapter’s projects. I called the number provided and the chapter invited me to my first leadership school in JCI. When I read the JCI Creed, I felt this is a place for me to develop myself and since when what has happened to my life is absolutely amazing. I took part in different projects, lead numerous projects, and took the challenge to join the local Board of Directors.

I served as JCI Zulia Local President in 2008 and JCI Venezuela National President in 2011, then I start my JCI career internationally and served different positions internationally over the years. I have the honoured, pleasure and the duty to serve as JCI President this year.

My story of JCI is amazing and it is a “Story of Change and Challenges” where I received huge support from extraordinary teams as well as members from my Local Organizations, National Organization, region, and even from the entire world!

Shirley Pang: JCI Senator Argenis joined JCI since 2001, it has been more than 20 years.

What is the biggest motivation for you to serve JCI for such a long time?

JCI Senator Argenis: This August I will celebrate my 21th year in JCI. The biggest motivation for me to serve JCI for more than 20 years is to serve the country, be part of the solution, and retribute all the gifts that this organization has provided me in terms of experiences and confidence.

Shirley Pang: How do you see the development of JCI in the coming future? There are so many youth organization nowadays. What makes JCI so special and why should youngster choose JCI? JCI Senator Argenis: I can see an amazing future for our organization and especially now because we are working on this strategic plan for the next coming years which will establish steps that we should follow for an amazing future for our organization. The main difference between JCI and other youth organizations is that JCI has a great focus on developing leadership skills in providing leadership development opportunities. JCI focuses not only on creating positive impact to the planet by creating amazing projects, but also to ensure the members participate in these projects and initiatives can develop their leadership skills and being part of the solution.

Shirley Pang: What are the five tips and advices that you would like to give to JCI Malaysia members?

JCI Senator Argenis: The five advices and recommendations that I have the pleasure to present to my beloved JCI Malaysia members are summarized as the “A.B.C.D.E”.

Arrive You will need to ensure that you have clue on what is your next goal and work with discipline until you “arrive” and achieve the goal.

Be there For instance, if your goal is to be part of the local Board of Director, you have to work hard and achieve the goal. Achieve the goal is not enough, you should also make sure that you always be there for the organization and members.

Challenge yourself Challenges here refer to the opportunities that this organization provides you. For instance, members invite you to lead a project but you think you are not prepared enough to be a leader. But if you are aware that you need to

challenge yourself, you will say “Yes I will do that”! This would be challenging but in the end you will be a better leader!

Dream “Dream” is thinking about the future with a mission. I can tell you that if you work with discipline, know what is your goal, work hard toward achieving the goal, always be there and challenge yourself, you will definitely be the dreamer and also a winner. This is because you will learn along the way and your enthusiasm will ensure your dream become reality one day.

Enjoy Ensure you enjoy every single moment in JCI! For example, enjoy when you serve the people and community through different projects, enjoy working with different amazing teams, just to name a few. You have the opportunity that not all people have. Just enjoy each single moment in JCI!

Shirley Pang: What do you want to say to JCI Malaysia members?

JCI Senator Argenis: First of all, thank you JCI Malaysia members for the amazing job that you have been doing in each region of Malaysia. I would like to encourage you to continue serving the community and keep going with the amazing job that you have been doing. Of course, JCIM members, you can always count on me not only as a president, but also as a friend! I really hope to see you all very soon again. All the best JCI Malaysia!

Interview with 1978 JCI Malaysia National President JCI Senator Dato’ John Khoo

Background JCI Senator Dato John Khoo’s academic journey was an interesting one. He went to a university right after high school but did not manage to complete his tertiary studies as he had to go back to Sandakan to manage his family business, the Merdeka Daily newspapers. From there, he managed to diversify his business to include manufacturing of plastic production mold, ship-building and dealing with heavy equipment, lorries and trucks. He has since retired and sold most of his companies while retaining his original family business, the Merdeka Daily newspapers. He is also an active business leader in his company; having served as the Chairman of Sabah Credit Corporation and the director of Malaysia-China Business Council. JCI Senator Dato John started his JCI journey by joining JCI Sandakan back in 1969. He became the Local President of JCI Sandaka in 1973 before taking the mantle as the President of Sabah Jaycees in 1975. This was before the merger of Sabah Jaycees, Sarawak Jaycees and Malaya Jaycees to form JCI Malaysia.

What is the most valuable experience in your JCI journey?

As the President of Sabah Jaycees, JCI Senator Dato John attended the 1975 JCI World Congress in Amsterdam, Netherlands. At that time, Malaysia had three representatives; the Presidents of Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak Jaycees. It was then a thought came into JCI Senator Dato John’s mind; “why is the Jaycees movement in Malaysia broken into three distinct parts when Malaysia was already a single country?” He then shared his thoughts with other Jaycees from other areas, namely Jaycee Singham, JCI Malaysia protem president VT Nathan, 1977 National President George Chang, 1979 National President James Lim and 1980 National President Alex Ting to discuss on the possibility of merging the three Jaycees movement into a single entity, JCI Malaysia.

Background After secondary education, JCI Senator James got a job as a General Clerk and he worked in sales for a few years before he joined The Straits Times press in 1965. JCI Senator James was JCI Kuala Lumpur President in 1972 and advanced his JCI Career to National President in 1979.

What was the biggest challenge faced in your JCI Journey?

As the National President of Jaycees Peninsular Malaysia (JCPM), the biggest challenge faced by JCI Senator James was to revitalise the dormant LOMs in JCPM. The other major challenge was to unite all the three National Organizations:JC Sabah, JC Sarawak and JCPM, together to form JAYCEES MALAYSIA. Initially, the task seemed difficult, but with the wisdom of the then National Presidents nothing was impossible if there was a Will.

Can you give tips and advices to encourage JCIM members to excel and pursue their JCI journey?

“If you want to benefit from JCI, you have to participate in the individual development training program. When you are in JCI, you have to identify your needs and wants, your strengths and weaknesses and then actively participate in projects which will help you achieve your goal(s). Perhaps, it may also benefit your career or business(es). You also have the benefit of networking and becoming lifetime friends with your fellow members.”

The progress of merging was swift as the discussion and the registration of JCI Malaysia all took place in the same year in 1976. Interview with 1980 JCI Malaysia National President JCI Senator Dato’lr Sr Alex Ting

Background JCI Senator Dato’ Ir Sr Alex originally from Sibu but moved to Kuching when he was young. After completing his secondary school, he continued his studies in New Zealand as a Civil Engineer. He then went on to become a registered valuer after passing the exam for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) United Kingdom. He is currently the Managing Director for WTS Konsultant Sdn Bhd along with several other businesses relating to real estate.

A friend introduced him to JCI back in 1970. After a few years, an opportunity came for him to be the President of JCI Kuching in 1973. He took up another opportunity to become the 1975 National President of JCI Sarawak back when Area Sarawak was still its own national organization. During this year, it was also when the 3 national organizations amalgamate to form what is now JCI Malaysia, and he was one of the signatories of the historical document of this formation. 5 years later, he was again given the opportunity to become the 1980 JCI Malaysia National President.

The biggest challenge you have faced in JCI journey?

Actually, running for election was one of the personal challenges for JCI Senator Dato’ Ir Sr Alex. Back in the 1970s-1980s, this was a relatively new concept; running an election in a U.S style with campaigns, caucuses and so on. So it was challenging for everyone but it was also a nice experience going through it. However, one of the biggest challenges is ‘How to Motivate People’ and this is not only in JCI but also in other situations, be it work or other organizations. It is always a challenge to figure out how to motivate an individual for them to achieve their best. It is when they achieve their best; it is then the organization can achieve its best.

The biggest motivation for you to serve JCI for such a long time?

There is a saying ‘Do not just take from society, but give back to society.’ This is the motivation for him to continue to be active in JCI. This same motivation also pushed him to give back to society in other ways. JCI Senator Dato’ Ir Sr Alex founded Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers Association (SHEDA) as the Protem Chairman and today the association is serving more than 200 members. He is also actively involved in Malaysian Institute of Estate Agents (MIEA) and currently serves as the Immediate Past Chairman for the MIEA Sarawak Branch committee. He is also a longserving member of Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI).

Background JCI Senator Bob went to Singapore Polytechnic to further his studies in Mechanical Engineering after graduating from Saint Paul’s Institution, Seremban. After he finished his studies, he came back to Malaysia due to family business.

Currently he is running own family business. JCI Senator Bob joined JCI Seremban in January 1970.

What is the biggest challenges you have faced in your JCI journey?

Communication is the biggest hurdle that JCI Senator Bob has faced in his JCI journey. Communication by phone is expensive those day, especially calling from the Peninsula to East Malaysia as it costs RM3 per minute.

Other than phone call, no other multimedia or communication channel is available at that time. Everything must be communicated by either expensive phone calls or snail mail.

Other than personal growth, what motivates JCI Senator Datuk John to serve JCI is realizing the opportunities available and benefiting from his involvement, and satisfaction in serving the organization. In short, Jaycees has provided him the platform to practice and nurish what he has learned, particularly in practicing parliamentary procedures and addressing challenges in presiding meetings more effectively not only as the National President but also his involvement in other organizations.

- Be active. Don’t be a fork and spoon member.

- Take opportunities to involve in NatCon, ASPAC conferences or World Congress.

Background JCI Senator Datuk Adeline, who joined JCI Intan in 1974, obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Asian Studies from the Australian National University in 1971 and a Post Graduate Diploma in Librarianship from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1972. She created history as the first woman Director of a State Department when she was appointed the Director of the Sabah State Library from 1973 to 1998. PNP Datuk Adeline is currently the chairperson of Institute Development Studies Sabah (IDS) 2021-2023.

What is the biggest challenges you have faced in your JCI journey?

Teamwork is important in any organization, the same goes for JCI. When the team members enjoy what they are doing, half of the battle is won. However, it was harder to motivate the team in JCI as all are volunteers and time was the main limitation although the passion was there. Also, there are bound to be some people who are against you. “We just cannot please every person. We often hear the saying, “agree to disagree”. So whatever situation we are faced with, make sure you make the best of it”. JCI became a very good training ground for a leader to learn how to tackle such situations at the workplace with maturity and with experience from JCI.

What are the differences between taking a post at local level, national, and international level?

Serve at the local level and national level are different from taking a post at international level. JCI Senator Datuk Adeline took the road less travelled when aiming for the position of JCI VP. This arduous journey was well worth it because the international experience she gained enhanced her personal growth. Her personality expanded as she began to understand how people live and think in the 6 countries she was assigned to. She got the opportunity to visit different National Organizations when she was JCI VP and JCI EVP. It was an experience never to be forgotten because she got to know how the people lived, ate, and what are the do’s and don’ts in each country. Last but not least, “nothing can take away your experience, how you expand your mind daily as the higher you fly, the more you will see”.

Background JCI Senator Peter is a Company Director and Business Consultant, graduated in Business Studies (Accounting) at Swinburne University, Victoria, Australia in 1972.

Upon returning from Australia in 1974, he joined Junior Chamber of Tawau end of 1974. He held several local organization positions and became Local Organization President in 1981. He continued to serve the Reginal Organization (Sabah Jaycees) as Honorary Secretary, and National Organization as National Vice President and National Executive Vice President, and subsequently became the 9th National President in 1985. He was the 1987 JCI Vice President (assigned to Japan, Korea, ROC (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Philippines and Pacific (Guam).

The most valuable experience in JCI journey?

The most valuable experience in his JCI journey is becoming an International Trainer for JCI. His Trainer journey in JCI began in 1981 after attending Malaysia Training of Trainers course in 1981 and this led to attending the JCI Training Of Trainers (TROT) course at the Miyazaki ASPAC, Japan in 1982. He then conducted numerous local training courses, wrote and presented his own materials in almost all parts of Malaysia. The “break-through” was in 1989 when he was appointed as an Assistant Trainer for the JCI Training Of Trainers (TROT) Course at the Yokohama ASPAC and that made his debut of International Trainings. From 1989 to 1991, he was invited worldwide to conduct hundreds of JCI Training courses as well as the then-new JCI Training Institute’s Trainer Programs – PRIME and EXCEL. At the 1991 Helsinki World Congress, he was conferred as one of the three International Training Fellows along with Bill Porter (New Zealand) and Gerrit Lovink (Belgium).

The biggest motivation for you to serve JCI for such a long time?

The biggest motivation for him to serve JCI for a long time is the ‘spiritual rewards’ he got when during/after giving a training, when the students/members CHANGE their attitude and move forward to enhance their personal potential.

What is the most valuable experience in your JCI Journey?

“The most valuable experience is that as a member, we get to learn by doing. You may learn about leadership by attending trainings or workshops but you can never be a good leader without being hands on.

JCI provides all of us the platform to apply practical leadership and not just theoretical leadership, we should not be armchair leaders in JCI”.

What is the biggest motivation for you to serve in JCI for such a long time?

The biggest motivation for JCI Senator Tiong to serve is the opportunities to develop ourselves. As we climb the leadership ladder, we will have that sense of self-improvement and indirectly improve those people around us. JCI is the best platform for young people who want to be a better person and leader.

What is the biggest challenges you have faced in JCI? The biggest challenge JCI Senator Li has face in JCI would be gender equality. In the early days, there were no mixed-gender chapters, it is either all male or all female chapters. Out of the 30 plus chapters those days, only two chapters are all female chapters, which means the leaders were mainly men. It is a great breakthrough for her to serve as the National President in 1986, and she is the second female National President after 1984 National President JCI Senator Datuk Adeline Leong.

What are the advise that you would like to provide current JCI Malaysia members?

- Be patient when you are starting your JCI journey as it takes time to learn and experience.

- Be able to adapt to changes in situation or environment.

- Share your knowledge with others.

- Teamwork is important in JCI. You should work with others to achieve something bigger, instead of working alone.

- Moderation is key. As an active JCI member, try to find the balance so you can be both efficient and effective.

The biggest challenge you have faced in JCI journey?

The biggest challenge that JCI Senator Dato’ Ong faced during his term as National President was the management and resources issue. By that time, it was not an easy task to establish a new local organization. Nevertheless, JCI members work hard together towards common goals and this teamwork builds strong relationships among the members.

Tips / advices that you would like to give to JCI Malaysia members?

- Always be yourself.

- Move as far as you can.

- Be open-minded and serve selflessly.

- Keep a low profile and humble.

- Continue to serve within and outside JCI.

She was the Protem and Charter President of JCI Intan 1975-1976, served as JCIM GLC in 1986, and JCIM National President in 1989. She worked as Sabah Civil Service between 1973-1978, before she joined the private and corporate sectors.

The most valuable experience in your JCI journey?

JCI Senator Jovinia mentioned that the valuable experience in her JCI journey is meaningless if she does not acknowledge the role and support of her fellow Board of Directors. TOGETHER, they journeyed, overcame and took positive actions: - NOM Financial status – came up with JCI merchandises; thanks to the co- operation, hard work and support from LOMs; raised more than enough to pay for the JCI Affiliation Fee. - PEMIMPIN – JCI Senator Jovinia and team initiated and launched this news bulletin for JCIM. - JAYCEE WEEK 1989 – A nationwide Jog-a-thon, “Run for the Nation” was organised and participated by the public as well as JCI members. This event was held over a weekend simultaneously by most of the LOMs; it was covered and featured in RTMTV3 News.

The Malaysian Association for the Blind (MAB) was the charity beneficiary The 1989 BODs purposely planned and carried out the 3 events highlighted above in order to help in boosting up the morale of the then members of JCIM. The “Run for the Nation” event attracted a lot of social media publicity for JCI and indirectly contributed to the increase of new members for the LOMs!

Background JCI Senator Charles graduated with a Bachelor degree in Science and Art, major in Mathematics and Accounting, in New Zealand. In his early years, he worked in an audit firm in New Zealand before he went to China to continue his career. He was involved mainly in internal auditing and financial control. After retiring, he mastered in insurance, selling investment insurance policies. Furthermore, he had also completed a Master in Theology in Christian. He joined JCI in 1983 and served as National President in 1990. He was hooked to JCI due to the 1984 JCI ASPAC which was held at Genting Highlands, Malaysia. It was an outstanding conference under the leadership of 1984 National President JCI Senator Datuk Adeline Leong.

What is the most valuable experience in your JCI journey?

Learn from mistakes – correct our mistakes and learn from them.

After recalling those old memories when he grew older, he realized that there were a lot of mistakes that were too late to resolve. In JCI, we learn through mistakes. As per Past National President JCI Senator Li Yo Wei has said, the most important thing is to learn fast and correct it fast. Along the journey in his life, some of the mistakes were corrected and some of them were only realized recently. Therefore, we must learn our mistakes and correct them whenever possible.

Background JCI Senator Arlena graduated from United Kingdom with a Bachelor of Science (Honours Degree in Management Science). In 1985/86, she was the LO President of JCI Intan which she has been attached to since 1979. Then in 1990/91, she was the JCIM National President.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your JCI journey?

Balancing the work and family life. JCI Senator Arlena’s 2 boys were still very young then. She had a demanding career. However, this challenge becomes ‘small’ when she learn how to plan, schedule and strategize the daily lives. Through JCI, she became a better life management planner. She enjoyed her JCI journey with her family and work – everyone is happy and so is she! The JCI trainings, may it be in classrooms or life experiences, have helped her to time managed her daily life fantastically!

- Revived TOYM and lasted until now.

- International friendship pact between JCI Malaysia & JCI Taiwan - As the National President, he was given the chances to travel to various places such as Beaufort, Kapit, Sandakan, Sarikei, Tawau in East Malaysia.

- Established many friendships from other places.

- Elected as 1994 JCI Vice President in JCI World Congress (Hong Kong), assigned to Australia, Fiji & New Zealand.

- Able to learn international cultures and hence able to share knowledge to members.

The reasons why JCI Senator Datuk Seri Nelson is motivated to serve JCI for long time is because he sees self-improvement within himself. He gained tons of knowledge and established many good friendships in JCI. Because of his service in JCI, he is also able to serve in other organisations such as Rotary Club. He also achieved social standing (Datuk Seri, Justice of Peace, being appointed as the 1st Honorary Consul of the Republic of Mozambique in Malaysia).

- Focus on 1 NGO position only and finish the term successfully.

- Perform your tasks / responsibilities with honesty and integrity.

- To have the will to learn and the desire to improve.

- Positive attitude.

Background JCI Senator Teresa graduated from YSITM and worked through rank and file to a Managerial position in various industries. Currently, she enjoys her life as a Corporate Trainer which has brought her round the world. She joined JCI in 1981 as a member of JCI Lahad Datu and was appointed as ‘Secretariat Manager’ not knowing that this was the start of many other responsibilities and duties in her JCI journey. She transferred her membership to JCI Intan 2 years later and was JCI Intan President in 1989/90. Her JCI journey has been very colorful.

She was also elected as the first lady chairman for APDC in 1996, 1998 the JCI Commission Chairman for Growth and Development, 1999 as the JCI Training Aspac Coordinator/Training Chairman for Area B. As JCI age got the better of her, this did not stop her from serving may it be in JCI or other voluntary organisations, such as Sabah Palliative Care and the Catholic Church, which she was the Parish Chairman from 2015-2017.

Differences between taking a post at local level, national and international levels One main difference is the culture. At international level, she tends to work with people from different cultures, beliefs, languages and practices.

Nevertheless, this opportunity has given her the space to adjust and adapt to shape up and develop a better understanding about working with people and appreciate herself and others better. She said “Just grab the opportunity and learn fun from each other while serving at different levels. Develop lasting friendship and networking!” In JCI, once we attempt to understand each other, there is no longer any differences, just brotherhood/sisterhood!

Life is sweeter with JCI!!

The biggest motivation for PNP to serve JCI for such a long time?

PNP felt motivated when she sees the members are growing both professionally and personally in JCI and life. People’s inspiration becomes her aspiration. Give without expectation! Selfless service is what motivated PNP to continue serving in the organization for a long time and a long time to come!

Background JCI Senator Lee joined JCI Ipoh in 1979 and he served as National President in 1995. Currently, he focuses his businesses on Amway.

The most valuable experience in your JCI journey?

Being a National President was his most valuable experience in his JCI journey. He gained lots of experience and knowledge during his presidency year. When he was National President, it was her responsibility to ensure the organization follows its mission, policies, and procedures that are in place.

The biggest motivation for you to serve JCI for such a long time?

JCI Senator Lee attended ASPAC years back and he was inspired by one of the speakers during the convention. Not only the speaker, he was also inspired

by JCI members from different countries on how they contribute to JCI and serve their community. Their stories have motivated him to take up the challenge and these are also what motivated him to serve JCI for such a long time.

Background JCI Senator Benny currently works as a business development managing partner. He was JCIM National President in 1996.

The most valuable experience in your JCI journey?

It was at the 1996 JCIM Annual National Convention hosted by JCI Kota Kinabalu. When JCI Senator Benny gave his NP speech and NP’s recognitions & awards, he felt that the 1996 National Presidential Theme “Towards Greater Accomplishments” has encouraged the members to go forward and achieve greater height.

Hence, with these encouragement and motivation, JCI Malaysia has won 10 JCI Awards and Recognitions at the 1996 JCI World Congress.

JCI Senator Clarence has been with JCI for 37 years, and the journey still continues. He is passionate about JCI andhe takes JCI as his “hobby”. Time has always been a challenge. Finding time to manage business, JCI and family. Time management has been something he worked on during the period between work, young family and JCI. Setting priority right and leveraging the right resources were the key to succeed.

Appointed as 2022-2026 JCI Malaysia Strategic Planning Taskforce Chairperson – Led the 1st ever JCIM SPC brainstorming with National Board members and SPC members. The outcome was our Road To 5000 with the a to double our membership by 2026. The 20222026 JCIM SPC Plan with eight goals and 22 strategies was produced and endorsed.

The most valuable experience in your JCI journey?

The most humbling experience was losing the NP election in year 2000. This experience made her a stronger person and helped her to begin more intelligently and finally won the NP election the following year. The most enlightening experience was serving as JCI Malaysia National President. This experience expanded her horizons and helped her to appreciate my family, career and her life even better. The most inspiring experience was to lead a highly motivated Malaysia delegation to bid for 2004 JCI ASPAC, Penang in Sendai Japan as the National President and subsequently JCI ASPAC 2004 convention advisor. The Malaysia Boleh spirit captured the attention of the Japanese media and was featured in Japan’s TV Chanel. We proudly brought back JCI ASPAC 2004.

The biggest motivation for you to serve JCI for such a long time?

Throughout JCI Senator Velvet’s journey in JCI, she enjoys seeing the transformation and growth of every member and JCI Malaysia. She is definitely the leader who make things happen as she spearheaded and led JCIM Skill Development Council and Trainers’ Pathway, the development of JCIM Inspire, JCIM Empower and TTT1, Initiated Road To 5000 and JCIM R&R Program, She is also appointed as 2022-2026 JCIM SPC Chairperson which developed the SPC Plan with 8 goals and 22 strategies and spearheaded JCIM Business School. These experiences continue to motivate and inspire her to consistently learn and update herself while working with the young national leaders to elevate the standard of our organization and members.

This major international project provided her with a tremendous opportunity for interaction and coordination among members of JCI Malaysia and JCI officers in order to achieve the great objective.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your JCI journey?

As the JCI Malaysia International Bidding Task Force Chairman, JCI Senator Alice had to assist JCIM to bid and secure the 2015 JCI Asia Pacific Conference to be hosted in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. It has been most challenging and fulfilling for her to lead as Chairman of the Bidding Task Force.

The biggest challenge you have faced in JCI journey?

Time management is the biggest challenge that JCI Senator Donald has faced in his JCI journey. It is challenging for him to balance his time for family, work personal, and JCI. Nevertheless, the best way to learn is to accept the challenges and work towards the goals.

“When you are determined, you will not easily give up and definitely you will break through the obstacles”. For instance, if a member faces an issue or when there is conflict, the member should speak to BODs or NVP and use the correct platform/channel to voice out the opinion, then get it solved.

Background JCI Senator Tony joined JCI around 1988-1989 and he got to know about JCI from his sister who is also a member of JCI Intan. JCI Senator Tony is a Master of Business Administration graduate.

The most valuable experience in your JCI journey?

JCI Senator Tony enjoys making friends all around the world. In JCI, members got the chance to enjoy team bonding time with other JCI members. No doubt, JCI Senator Tony also has tons of valuable experiences in his JCI journey. “Just take up the challenges and from there you will gain the skills and experience. You will learn the people-management skills, understanding people, ways to work with people, and organisation skills such as chairing and handling meeting. You will definitely feel different when you go out for work”.

The biggest challenge you have faced in JCI journey?

The biggest challenge that JCI Senator Tony has faced happened in 2006 when he was the National President. It was quite challenging for some reasons, one of the reasons was tight budget.

Nevertheless, it is still considered a successful year and he is grateful that he has been given the chance to serve as a National President!

Background JCI Senator Law, an interior designer with more than 25 years of experience, has an interior design company based in Johor Bahru. She established the company in the year 1995 as soon as she completed her Diploma in Interior Design in Singapore. JCI Senator Law gets to know about JCI through her friends and she joined JCI in 1996. Astonishingly, when JCI Senator Law was a 2-month-old member, she took up the challenge and successfully organized JCI Johor Bahru Installation & Awards Banquet (IAB) with just 2-month of preparation!

In 2003, Dato’ Dr Tan Hian Tsin – the founder of Crocodile International – came out with this “1-to-1 challenge” given that if JCIM successfully fundraise RM500,000, Dato’ will donate another RM500,000 to JCI Malaysia Development Berhad. JCI Senator Law accepted the challenge when she was the National President in 2007. JCI Senator Law and her Board conducted several campaigns such as “Ringgit a day” to meet the RM500,000 target. All their hard work paid off in the end and JCI Malaysia successfully fundraised RM500,000 and Dato’ Dr Tan donated RM500,000 to JCIM at its 32nd Annual National Convention in October 2007. JCI Senator Law would like to take this opportunity to thank all the past National President, Board of Directors, Officers, Committees, and Members for their contributions to JCIM and also the campaigns.

JCI Senator Sabrina’s most valuable experience is when she was the Area Chair. It was challenging yet fulfilling because she was pregnant at that time and she has to travel and look after the whole JCIM Peninsular LOs.

One of the biggest challenge JCI Senator Sabrina has faced in her JCI journey is to change the structure of NBOD. At that time, JCIM Peninsular was split into 2 Areas and they need to refer/study from other NOMs which has a quite number of LOs and learn from them.

Background JCI Senator Jamie graduated in Business Administration, and worked at KL for 3 years. She started her own business at the age of 25. She went back to Sarawak and established a kitchen materials & supply trading company in 1995. JCI Senator Jamie joined JCI Sibu in December 1995 and became Local President in 1998.

Then, she served as Area Sarawak officer in 2000 and 2001. In 2006, JCI Senator Jamie served as NVP, NEVP in 2007, NGLC in 2008, and became National President in 2009.

The biggest challenge you have faced in JCI journey?

There are a few challenges that JCI Senator Jamie has faced in her JCI journey: - Geographical challenges in Sarawak: Have to pay for expensive MAS airline tickets to travel around as NBOD - Every time JCI Senator Jamie goes for the international event, she has to depart one day earlier because she needs to go to KL before flying internationally. It was tough back in the days compared to now with AirAsia - Besides JCI, JCI Senator Jamie has to manage her business as well. Currently, Sarawak IQI - Sibu, Miri, Bintulu, Kuching, new launch are all handled by JCI Senator Jamie

He comes from a Mechanical Engineering background and worked in a factory from 1991 until 2001. After that, he started his career in the finance industry as a loan advisor. In 2003, he started an SPA business with his wife.

The biggest challenge you have faced in JCI journey?

The biggest challenge that JCI Senator Dennis has faced in JCI Journey is schedule arrangement.

He needs to travel to many places for work and JCI purposes, so schedule management and time management are the biggest challenges for him to overcome.

The biggest motivation for you to serve JCI for such a long time?

The biggest motivation would be self-improvement. In JCI, every member has only 1 year to lead. All positions you only have one year to serve. JCI Senator Dennis learned a lot in JCI. Even now, he is still learning new things from JCI, and applying what he has learned in his business.

Background JCI Senator Joseph joined JCI Mandarin Sibu in 1999, and he was the 4th Local President of JCI Mandarin Sibu in 2000. During his local president year, he was awarded the Most Outstanding Local President in Malaysia & the world, and won the same award the following year in the Asia Pacific. He was elected as JCI Malaysia National President in the year 2011. He graduated from University of New South Wales in Australia, Bachelor of Engineering, major in Naval Architecture. After his bachelor’s degree, he also completed a Master of Business Administration, and is now pursuing Ph.D. in Business Management. His career background was Naval Architect, and currently he is Sarawak State Assemblyman for N.51 Bukit Assek.

What is the biggest motivation for you to serve JCI for such a long time?

JCI Senator Joseph joined JCI at 24 years old and became president at 25. He benefited and learned a lot from the senior member who was always willing to guide the junior member and him. That’s why he will keep contributing back to JCI. JCI Senator Joseph really inspired by the JCI Creed, particularly “GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE OF LAWS RATHER THAN OF MEN” and “SERVICE TO HUMANITY IS THE BEST WORK OF LIFE”. He always practices it even though he is now a politician. He hopes his experience and effort can motivate and inspire more junior members and make JCI better.

Background JCI Senator Alexander grew up in Singapore, he then pursued his Degree in Accounting and Master of Business Administration in the United Kingdom. He came back to Malaysia in 1996. Since 2000, he has been managing his family business, related to the oil palm industry. He joined JCI in 2005, recommended by a friend from Rotaract Club.

What is the most valuable experience in your JCI journey?

2011 JCI Academy at Nagano, Japan. In Japan, JCI Senator Alexander spent 3-4 days staying with the host family and also visited an elementary school.

During the visit to elementary school, he noticed that the children learn about recycling (washing & folding their milk cartons after emptying it), teamwork and responsibility (cleaning the classroom every day) at a very young age, which is very different from the elementary schools in Malaysia. Throughout the trip, he gained a deeper understanding of Japanese cultures and way of life! It was a big eye-opener to him.

Biggest challenge in JCI journey?

2012 JCI Malaysia Election: He was competing for the National President position. Along with his running mate (NSG candidate back then), they had to travel around Malaysia before the national convention to meet up with JCI members from different areas.

The purpose of the trip was for him to deliver and explain his plan of action. His hard work paid off and he became 2013 JCIM National President. Throughout the process, he learned so many new things and felt so grateful for this challenge.

When he was the National officer from the year 2010 to 2016, he appreciated the one-year-to-lead philosophy and took up the challenges and learnt from every position he has served. He had specific Key Performance Index (KPIs) and set his own targets before he took up each position, and made sure he achieved them before the term ended.

What is the biggest challenges you have faced in your JCI journey?

One of the biggest challenges that JCI Senator Cat Teoh has faced in the JCI journey happened in 2015 when he was the National President. He, together with his NBODs, had to solve the conflicts and issues raised during JCI ASPAC, hosted by JCI Penampang. It was challenging but they have learned a lot from the events.

The biggest motivation for you to serve JCI for such a long time?

Of course, the opportunity to learn something new everyday in this organization has been the biggest motivation for him to serve JCI. When the years pass by, we will have that responsibility to serve not only the community, but also the nation. Not only personal development, involvement of young people on the advancement of this country is important too. This is what we call a “Real Active Citizen”.

She joined JCI in 2010 and served as National President in 2017.

Background JCI Senator Kelvin Chew currently works as an insurance agent at Allianz. He joined JCI Sibu in 2001 when he was 21 years old.

What is the most valuable experience in your JCI journey?

Her most valuable experience is when she first joined the National Convention. JCI Senator Nurul-Huda got the opportunities to learn and expand her network, both locally and internationally, during the convention. She also shared her experience as a running-mate. She had to go to different areas to meet with the members with the National President candidate, for instance from Kuala Lumpur to Kedah, then back to KL and fly to Tawau plus KK, then to Miri and Sibu before back to Johor. That was a tiring but exciting experience which she got to fly across Malaysia to meet with JCI Malaysia members.

The most valuable experience in your JCI journey?

The most valuable experience in his JCI journey is meeting friends from different areas and strengthening the friendships. When he was president, I got to learn how to communicate with close friends who are also his colleagues in JCI. This is because it is a bit challenging to be serious with friends who are so close to you but at the same time serve as board of directors in the same local chapter.

The biggest challenge you have faced in JCI journey?

As someone who grew up with Chinese education background, the language barrier was his biggest challenge in JCI. It took him some time to learn and improve his English. Now he can understand English better and his public speaking has improved. For members who face the same issue, I can do it and I believe you can too!

The biggest challenges are time management and work-life balance. We have to balance our lives, especially at different stages of life. For instance, JCI Senator Andy has to balance the time given to both JCI and family after he becomes a husband and father. In other words, it is challenging to take care of family without affecting the work in JCI. What are the differences between taking a post at local level, national, and international level?

We need to have different capabilities, passions for selfmotivation and inspiring others at different levels.

JCI Senator Ken Lee

The most valuable experience in your JCI journey?

When he was Local President in 2014, his chapter has achieved 100% members attendance to host 2nd JCIM Area Central South Convention (previously known as APCSC) and achieved 100% membership growth from less than 20 members to 50 members at the end of the year. As the 2020 National President, JCI Malaysia was awarded 5-Star Rating from Registrar of Youth under the Ministry Youth & Sports Malaysia (KBS) for National Organization Management Efficiency.

The biggest motivation for you to serve JCI for such a long time?

JCI is not like other NGOs. The relationships and friendships are not built on personal interest but more on serving, learning, and self-developing. The international platform provided by JCI also motivates JCI Senator Ken Lee to continue serving for such a long time.

JCI Senator Chew Hooi Mei Background JCI Senator Chew Hooi Mei graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Development from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Currently, she works in human resources and joined JCI Pearl in 2009.

The most valuable experience in your JCI journey?

Some of the most valuable experiences in her JCI journey are: - Opportunities to broaden her network both locally and internationally, and friendships in JCI - As Local President in 2014, she organized the first-ever Women Run in Penang which became the flagship project of JCI Pearl until today.

She has gained good relationships with local agencies and made JCI Pearl more visible in the community.

- Became the first full-virtual National President in 2021, this is challenging as she needs to be very creative, and create a lot of engagement activities to connect with members.

The biggest challenge you have faced in JCI journey?

During the pandemic, JCI Senator Chew Hooi Mei needs to ensure that the organization has organized the right event which able to motivate members all the time. Everything is not the same during the pandemic, the pandemic has made almost everything virtual, thus we need to adapt to the latest trend.

The biggest motivation for you to serve JCI for such a long time?

I would say I am driven by passion to serve, develop and enabling leaders in JCI. Tips / advices that you would like to give to JCI Malaysia members?

Interview with

JCI Senator Ellen Lu Background JCI Senator Ellen Lu currently pursuing her career as a full-time real estate negotiator where she gets certain flexibility of time to be more involved with her JCI career. She joined JCI when she was 21 years old, fresh into society. Never did she expect she would progress her JCI journey to where she is today.

She spent 6 years growing up in her LO before she took up the challenge as Local President in 2012 and furthered her JCI journey to serve as National President in 2022.

In regards to the 2022 JCIM Plan of Action, how is the progress so far? Are you satisfied with the progress?

The 2022 JCI Malaysia Theme, Take the LEAD covers 4 major aspects that align with the JCI Plan of Action. Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Administration and Digitalization are the four major focuses outlined for JCI Malaysia and she is very overwhelmed with the support from the Local Presidents in putting these initiatives into action on the grassroots level, growing their Local Organizations during this post-pandemic era. Since the pandemic lockdown for the past 2 years, she is truly blessed with the progress and realignment the National Organization has thus far in coping with the new norm. She looks forward to seeing the LOs set new benchmarks for their Local Organization which in turn, contributes toward the overall success of the National Organization.

What is the most valuable experience in your JCI journey?

The biggest challenge she has faced would most definitely be time and priority management in balancing her JCI commitments, career, family, friends and personal time. As JCI Senator Ellen Lu took on a bigger portfolio within her JCI journey together with her career progression, effective time management became very challenging. There are always more tasks to be completed than the available time to accomplish them.

This is where certain important things such as family and health get neglected unconsciously. In the realisation of this, she is still learning about effective delegation of responsibilities and priority management where she can pursue a balanced JCI journey.

What is the biggest motivation for you to serve JCI for such a long time?

The greatest motivation to continuously serve in JCI can be summarized in one word: “Growth”. Along her 16 years of JCI journey, JCI Senator Ellen Lu noticed not just her own personal growth but also the growth of the people around her who are also a part of the JCI movement.

JCI has contributed to her personal growth and grooming of many leaders of tomorrow. There is a great sense of fulfilment and sense of achievement to see normal individuals take on leadership roles and contribute to the advancement of our society. Seeing JCI Malaysia plays a part in developing leaders of a changing world motivates her to further serve this organization.

If she must highlight her most valuable experience, it would be during the visitation of President Argenis to JCI Malaysia this year.

She got the opportunity to spend 4 full days learning from a man who has 21 years of journey in JCI and actively preached the vision that “Leading is our Duty”. He also initiated a working committee to compile the Declaration of Human Duties which JCI Senator Ellen Lu was excited to see it being presented at the United Nations. They visited all 4 areas in JCI Malaysia within 4-day where each station presented them with a unique and memorable experience. This once-in-a-lifetime encounter will be one of the most valuable experiences in her JCI journey where a wish came true because of the courage to pursue it.

CIM successfully hostedjoint National BOD meetings with JCI Taiwan, JCI Philippines, and JCI Singapore through e-conference in June this year. The meetings focused on each of the National Organization’s projects, cooperation opportunities, and exchange of ideas. National officers led by respective National President (JCI Malaysia President JCI Senator Ellen Lu, JCI Taiwan President JCI Senator Barry Huang, JCI Philippines President JCI Senator John Glenn, and JCI Singapore President JCI Senator Evan Yah) exchanged varying opinions and unique solutions regarding the national projects.

JCI Malaysia succesfully held the Mid-Year Retreat & Review in Miri from 10 to 12 June 2022. Thanks to Organizing Chairman JCI Senator Petrus and his team who have been working hard to design all the activities with purpose and engagement in mind.

From BBQ steamboat GMM with local organizations, Top Gun Maverick movie night, scuba team building, rooftop sunset view, to review meeting until late night, those who attended the retreats unanimously agreed that they had lots of fun. No doubt, the overall feedback from National Board of Directors was that the retreat was helpful and fun.

The main objective of the 3-day program involving National Board of Directors is to increase the officers’ camaraderie and strengthen team relationships. A review meeting and discussion was also chaired by our National President JCI Senator Ellen Lu to review JCI Malaysia’s achievements for the first half of 2022 and also on the upcoming events. Taking time to reflect and review the past half year gives us the chance to stop and appreciate the organization. This is because we believe that a member/officer is more productive and motivated when he feels a greater sense of involvement in establishing the organization’s goals.

CI Malaysia President, JCI Senator Ellen Lu and the National Board of Directors paid a courtesy call to the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, YB Senator Dato Sri Ti Lian Ker on 30th May 2022. Our National President and officers took the opportunity to brief Dato Sri Ti on JCI Malaysia’s overall progress as well as seek support for JCIM Leaders Run which will be held in the third quarter this year. Both sides also had a dialogue to discuss the collaboration opportunities between JCIM and the Ministry. YB Senator Dato Sri Ti Lian Ker reaffirmed his support to JCI Malaysia.

CI Malaysia had a debate friendly match with JCI Mongolia early of May this year.

Three members from JCI Mongolia (Fatima, Tuguldur, and Ulamsaikhan) debated against three JCI Malaysia members (Joe Chang, Skyler Tan, and Kenny Lee) on the motion that “Vaccination should be made mandatory”. Not only the debaters exchanged unique arguments and ideas in the debate, our members also learnt a lot from debaters as well as the valuable comments given by the adjudicator.

CI Malaysia 1st special National Board of Directors meeting was held on 13th April 2022, with all 2022 JCIM Executive Committees attended the meeting. The agenda being discussed in the meeting included JCI President JCI Senator Argenis’s visitation program and schedule, the appointment of Skills Development Certification Board Chairman JCI Senator Velvet Ooi and her committee team, and received progress report from JCIM Leaders Run Program Organizing Chairman Bruce Ban. The next National Board of Directors meeting will be held on 1-3 July 2022 at JCIM Secretariat. JCIM members are welcome to join the meeting.

What motivates you to take the role as APDC? There are two important “ship” in JCI: leaderSHIP and friendSHIP. What motivates me to take the role as APDC is the spirit of exchange of knowledge among the National Organization in the Asia Pacific region. As APDC, I got the chance to work together with team members from different NOMs to assist National Organizations with internal development of officers and training. Not only that, we also help to execute plans to further promote the JCI movement in the region. As APDC, I also get the opportunity to expand my network and make friends from different countries, as per the JCI Creed “The brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations”.

What is the most valuable experience in your APDC journey?

Other than friendship, I also get to travel to different countries to execute the missions such as training and fellowship. Before I start my term as APDC, I have set a few goals such as to grow JCI Thailand membership, assist the NOM to establish flagship projects, and develop more JCI trainers. Throughout the year, me and my team have successfully produced introductory videos that help JCI Thailand members to understand more about APDC and motivate these members to participate in JCI events. Besides that, our team also helped JCI Thailand to set up a Skill Development Commission to develop with more JCI trainers and organize training such as e-Awards training, JCI official courses, and APDC journey.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your JCI APDC journey?

One of the biggest challenges that I have faced is to manage different members from different countries. It is challenging to manage because different leaders from different countries have different leadership styles and national cultures. But after a few meetings and working together for some time, we understand each other’s cultures better, especially when we have common goals for the assigned countries. In short, it does not have to be difficult when we face challenges, but these challenges are a great way for us to learn and achieve our goals.

This project has been organized for 9 consecutive years. Other than providing the needs to the orphans, JCI MCE promotes interaction between members and orphans to allow them to be in the connection and be updated. JCI MCE provides them with many meaningful activities, such as bringing them to the zoo, team building games, motivation talk, performance, and others to educate these orphans to live life with an optimistic mindset and correct attitude in their growing stage and future. A little contribution by us can make a big difference to them. It helps to achieve UNSDG 10 - Reducing inequalities and ensuring no one is left behind.

Create awareness of the harmfulness of plastic bottles towards our environment, and educate the public on the value of the plastic bottles which can be recycled and become industrial packing strips. By 2023, reduce plastic bottle pollution at the rate of 15% in the Sibu area.

This year we are very honored to have JCI Kinta to host the physical Area Convention after the 2 years of pandemic lock-down led by the Convention Director, Jerome Fong and his team. We had many programs going on such as the General Assembly, Public Speaking and Debate Competitions, Local President Summit, New Member Orientation, workshops and many more. On that day, approximately 50 pax of new members stood a chance to be inducted by our 2022 JCI President Argenis Angulo without flying overseas. The new members who joined the induction received the JCI Pin and New Member Certificate signed by him. Our members also get the chance to have a dialogue with our JCI President Argenis Angulo to understand more about insight and out sight of JCI led by Area Director, Rayane Mok.

JCI Malaysia Area North Convention held annually for JCI Malaysia Area North members. The Area Convention serves as an important platform for the organization to review and share the projects conducted by respective Local Organizations and to finetune the execution strategy for the remaining of the year. The Area Convention serves as a great exposure for an individual to get a feel of what JCI is all about.

Area Central South Convention 8 - 10 April

This convention has attracted more than 500 participants from different Local Organizations around Malaysia. One of the highlights of the Convention was the Mandarin Oregon Debate Competition which allowed our members to better understand the issue discussed. The welcoming night of the Convention was held on 9th April 2022 at Austin Waterpark with the theme “Pool Party”. GALA and Awards Night was subsequently held on 10th April 2022 to acknowledge and reward the efforts, accomplishments, and contributions of members.

Organizing chairman Kenneth Lim expressed his gratitude to the committee team and all the participants, especially this is a long-awaited physical event after the pandemic. 2022 JCIM National Executive Vice President cum Area Central South Chairman, JCI Senator Vincent Leng also took the initiative to have his speeches in Bahasa Malaysia for the 3-day convention. He hoped the convention or JCIM activities will be able to attract different potential members from different races as Malaysia is a multi-racial country.

JCI Malaysia is a platform for young entrepreneurs to connect with each other and enhance the connection with International Businesses. In the

meantime, it also provides a development opportunity that empower young people to create positive change. Young entrepreneurs may maximize the value of the human network and create business opportunities.

Train The Trainer 1 (TTT1)

3 - 5 April JCI Malaysia TTT1 was successfully held on 3rd – 5th June at The 5 Elements Hotel, hosted by JCI Kuala Lumpur. The preparation for TTT 1 started back in Dec 2021, when Organising Chairperson, Wong Jian Ming and his committee team from JCI Kuala Lumpur successfully won the bid for the project. After 6 months of hard work and preparation together with the Trainers Team, the training has finally come to fruition!

Throughout the 2.5 days course, a total of 6 training modules were delivered by the trainers to the participants, to prepare them in becoming a JCIM certified trainer. The training was attended by a total of 19 enthusiastic participants from various Local Organisations. Not only had the participants gained more knowledge and insights in stepping up as future trainers, but also had fun and formed a closer bond with one another.

It was an honour to have an experienced Trainers Team in sharing their training skills and expertise generously in unleashing the trainer quality in each participants. The trainers team includes Head Trainer JCI Sen. Velvet Ooi, Assistant Trainer JCI Sen. Nurul-Huda, and Assistant Trainer Stanley Goh. Last but not least, congratulations to all participants who have graduated from TTT 1 and all the best as you begin your journey as a JCIM certified trainer to advance the mission and vision of JCI!

Junior Chamber International (JCI)

Empowering Youths to be Agents of Change (Area Sabah Convention) JCI Malaysia Area Sabah and JCI Tanjung Aru successfully held the annual Area Sabah Convention from 13 to 15 May 2022 at Promenade Hotel Kota Kinabalu.

It was attended by 158 youth delegates from all over Malaysia. The convention theme is “Agents of Change” with the intention to inspire and empower youths to be the changemaker that will initiate positive change to our country. Gracing the events are Guest of Honor Yang Berhormat Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, Malaysia Deputy Minister of Works, Member of Parliament P182, a great youth idol from Sabah, represented by JCI Asia Pacific Development Officer JCI Senator Alvis Loo Mun Yew; 2022 JCI Malaysia National President Ellen Lu Ping Ping; 2022 JCI Malaysia National Executive Vice President cum Area Sabah Chairman Michael Chang Yam Kei; 2022 JCI Tanjung Aru President Stephy Tham Yeh Ying; the Convention Director Jack Lee Vun Zac.

YB Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup officiated the opening ceremony through his representative JCI Senator Alvis Loo Mun Yew. He emphasized the importance of having such convention to expose youths to share and learn from youth leaders of various fields. He added that youths should excel and add value to the societies while pursuing their passions rather than purely economic benefits. At the same time, youths need to embrace changes and new technologies, for example, Industrial Revolution 4.0, internet of things (IOT), and sustainable & green technologies which will improve productivity and efficiency as well as more friendly to the environment.

More than 20 programs were carried out over 3 days covering general assemblies, training, workshop, forum, debate and public speaking competitions, and networking. Delegates from outside Sabah were also entertained and exposed to the local cultures of Sabah. The convention was supported by Sabah Ministry of Youth and Sport, and sponsored by GoNet, Lifeplus Medical Group, Resident Healthcare Group, Kuta Bistro, and Packaging Warehouse. The convention is JCI Malaysia Area Sabah signature annual event.

The last physical convention was held in Tawau in 2019 and it is exciting to learn that the 2023 Convention will be held again in Tawau by JCI Merotai.

Area Sarawak Convention 2022 Area Sarawak Convention (ASC) – one of the biggest project of JCI Malaysia Area Sarawak, and also a perfect kick-off event to taste the JCI spirit, was successfully hosted by JCI Damai from 20th May to 22nd

With the passion from Convention Director Victor Tan, Area Sarawak Chairman Grace Lee, Area Sarawak officers and all of the committees, the convention successfully

attracted a total of 231 delegates from all over Malaysia and this is the largest delegations in Area Sarawak Convention history.

During this 3D2N Convention, different motions were proposed and discussed, numerous reports were presented in General Assembly, several workshops and trainings were conducted by experienced trainers, plus the exciting debate and speech competitions. Not to forget the Opening, Closing and Award Ceremonies that every member is looking forward to during a convention!

Meanwhile, the strong support from Opening Ceremony Guest of Honor YB Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah (Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, Performing Arts; Minister of Youth, Sports & Entrepreneur Development Sarawak) and Closing Ceremony Guest of Honor YB Dr Sim Kui Hia, (Sarawak Deputy Premier cum Minister of Public Health, Housing & Local Government Sarawak) who was represented by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng had motivated and encouraged all of the members to contribute positively to the society. Encouragement and positive impact from them are notably remarkable!

Keeping the JCI Vision Alive

JCI envisions itself to be the leading global network of young active citizen through its activities, events and workshops that attract young people between the ages 18 to 40 years old. The median age in JCI Malaysia as of today is 29.38 years old. This consists of 41% of the entire membership base in JCI Malaysia. This means that the generation which JCI Malaysia is grooming are the Millennials. This is almost the same as the median age in the whole of Malaysia which is 30.26 years old. It is important to note this because by 2025, millennials will make up 75% of the global workforce and the current operating models in organisations simply don’t work for the mindset of this generation.

Membership Demographic in JCI Malaysia JCI Malaysia has a total of 2,081 registered members. The largest age group is from 25 to 34 years old, consisting 62.4% of total membership count. There is a healthy gender balance where both genders are equally active in the local organisations as well as in the national organization.

Efforts Leading Towards 25% Growth This Year Our National President, JCI Sen. Ellen Lu shared her vision to grow membership in JCI Malaysia by 25% this year because she realised that in order to create a larger impact to the members and communities around us, we need more manpower and resources to create a reason for our existing members to renew the following year and the years to come.

Hence, JCI Malaysia rolled out 3 very important initiatives to enrol its own members to step up the recruitment effort to hit the 25% target:-

Launching of the JCI Malaysia Roadmap

It is imperative that JCI Malaysia will have its own portal to allow members to interact, communicate, list their respective LO activities on a structured channel, manage all administrative work “paperless” and so forth. The development of the JCI Malaysia Roadmap is a milestone because now, the National Officers who are overseeing the development of their assigned LOs have better visibility as compared to years before.

We now have active data mentioning when new members get on board and how quickly an LO recruits. These data are crucial to us because we now can immediately step in to assist the Local President without having to wait for his report at the end of the year.

Recruiting & Retention (R&R) Workshop

The 5+5 Incentive JCI Malaysia recently launched the 5+5 Incentive campaign to incentivise those who have achieved their target declared membership headcount. This is an important initiative rolled out by the National President because it now channels the focus from those LOs who have hit target to aim for a higher target, i.e. growth.

Based on our records as of today, we now have 20 out of 71 LOs which have achieved declared membership target. Although we are still very much far away from having all LOs to complete their declared membership target, but at least we now have a benchmark for next year and most Local Presidents and/or their boards will then know how quickly they need to complete this priority #1 before they can declare LO growth in their Presidential report during the National Convention.

SUMMARY

JCI Malaysia looks forward to doubling their membership count to 5,000 members by the end of 2025. We understand that we are not going to nail our strategy right off the bat.

The key to successful strategy is to continually refine it based on data and learnings. #alwaysbelearning

When our previous Taskforce Chairperson, Past National President, JCI Sen. Velvet Ooi launched a pilot test of this R&R Workshop in Year 2021, we have seen that the LOs that were part of it now have a recruitment blueprint as a reference when they planned their recruitment efforts for the long-term. The result of this workshop has inspired the local board members to strive for a bigger three-digit membership headcount, a number which they may not have ever thought of before a year ago.

This workshop has opened up the minds of many local leaders to understand the importance of growth, which is: “Be not afraid of growing slowly; be afraid only of standing still.”
