PLAZA ASSISTED LIVING
The first step of the project was a poem analysis which turned into a diagram. My process involved using color notation for words relating to violence, large natural forces, bread/earth, body/life, and music. I then used these color themes to inform the planning and material palette with the given building shell and program requirements.
The residents of this facility are makers and tinkerers, who use creation and craft as a form of therapy.
The overarching design intent is to create experiences reminiscent of walking through a city, providing choice and autonomy for residents.

Color is used on horizontal and vertical surfaces to help residents with memory loss and visitors identify the area they’re in.
Public areas have a yellow and beige palette.
Craft and therapy spaces have a red and burgundy palette.
Private calm spaces like the library have a bluegreen palette.
Residences have a taupe-pink palette.

SEAHORSE BARN
After studying Ray Kappe’s BorgheiCookston house, we were tasked with combining elements from the house with the Binker Barn model at Sea Ranch. Working with a partner, we created this home for two families to cohabitate, adding an ADU extension for the second family.
Dollhouse models in architecture were another topic in studio, so this also was a main feature for Seahorse Barn. We designed the hinge to swing open the shared dining and living space.

CO-OP COMMUNITY CENTER
In the context of bustling, urban Los Angeles, a need arises for a community space that is safe and protected, yet still fosters connectedness with others. This community center is meant to provide opportunities for growth for individuals and famlies alike. Being centrally located with many nearby businesses, the first floor is designated to be open and flexible for use. The second floor is dedicated to students to learn and be expressive. Finally, the third floor encourages students to exercise and play freely.

BUILDING LOCATION
The building being blocked in on lateral sides only allows for windows at the front and back.
Layers of translucency allow for light to travel across the space while maintaining privacy when needed.
Layers of translucency provide differences in light and shadow.
These elements give the space a sense of dynamism, reflective of the lively people and activities occurring within.
