“By far it’s the most difficult sport I’ve ever tried,” says Tom Spitsnaugle, co-founder of a website that presents training videos by world-class ropers. “With two horses, two riders and an unpredictable steer, you’ve got five brains and that means anything can happen. It happens very fast; you have to be able ride your horse and handle a rope.” As it happens, Tom Cusick, owner and developer of the 1,000-acre Estancia gated residential community, is an avid team-roping competitor

reg Schenck stands by his product. And on it, for 30 years now as founder of Houston’s premier flooring company.

After leaving the University of Houston with a degree in marketing, Schenck partnered in the early 1980s with a friend and found himself “slab hopping,” bidding hardwood-floor jobs in half-built homes. Professionally, that was not going to be enough for this native Houstonian who claims to be “cursed by an eye that appreciates quality and perfection.” He bought out the partner, aimed higher, and has since ridden shotgun over a shop that produces artistic masterpieces – on which people also can walk. Those who know Schenck best consider that self-described “curse” of his more of a gift, one that enables him to see opportunity where others see hurdles, beauty where others see rubbish. 6

“I’m constantly looking for new things, new materials, new designs,” said Schenck from across a handmade table that also is his creation, “always looking for something to distinguish our product.” And distinguished it is, as say Houston’s finest homebuilders and most discriminating homeowners. His floors range from focal point to signature in a room, depending on their owners’ tastes, and those who know the company’s work can identify it instantly beneath their feet. Schenck enjoys another critical degree of separation from those who consider themselves his competition: He’s never turned down a client’s request except when budget became an issue. If it can be imagined, Schenck believes strongly, it can be created. Words fall well short of describing the intricacy of his floors, none of which is exactly like another. The modest showroom in which Schenck makes first impressions on clients is a gallery of exquisite samples, and dozens more hang on one long wall in the warehouse.

Worth noting, Schenck doesn’t maintain an inventory of materials, “because every job is different.” The surprisingly large building, deliberately unimpressive from the street, is home to installation supplies, woodworking tools, people who are experts in the use of those items, and ample space for them to practice their craft. Only after the client’s plan is complete and the bid is accepted does Schenck set out to select his raw materials. He prefers to work with domestic woods – including everything from traditional oak to refurbished pallets to logs recovered from river bottoms – but has access also to a multitude of exotic woods. “I’d rather support the domestic economy,” said Schenck, “and work with wood from sustainable forests.” Schenck and Company politely and respectfully discourages clients whose interests lie more in cost than in custom or who do not appreciate the expertise that goes into a Schenck and Company finished product. “If you think a wood floor is a wood floor,” he said, “we’re not a good fit.” If, on the other hand, your vision is of elaborate inlays or planks that curve with the lines of an elegant staircase or wrap around a majestic column or feature inlays of stone or even rawhide, Schenck is your man. Schenck’s materials and designs afford his clients an unlimited number of options, but he maintains a keen sense of where to draw the line. “I can’t stand floors in which the installer threw in everything but the kitchen sink,” he said. “It doesn’t flow. It doesn’t fit the home.” In separating himself from that original partner, knowingly or not, Schenck concurrently separated himself from every other flooring company. He trusts his own instincts, his own tastes, and they have served him quite well. “I know what I like, and that’s what I do,” he said with a delicate balance of confidence and humility. “And I despise mediocrity.” You’ll find no mediocrity under the Schenck and Company name. Nor compromise. Nor shortcuts. “We’re craftsmen,” Schenck summarized. “We do it right.”

Step by step Every Schenck and Company floor begins with a client meeting, a chance for floor buyer and floor builder to establish an important, personal rapport. That leads smoothly into collaboration on design, materials, timeline and – gulp – budget. Once each of those items has been attended, Greg Schenck acquires the raw materials from which pure beauty will be extracted and placed proudly in a home or office or other instantly unique structure. Floors are cut individually, piece by piece no matter how many hundreds or thousands of pieces are involved, and laid dry to ensure perfect fit in a special section of the shop. From there, once Schenck and the customer are satisfied that the flooring is as ordered, the floor is disassembled and transferred to the location. Installers then put the puzzle together a final time, stain and finish it on site, and then stand aside as the homeowner takes his or her first slack-jawed steps across that new floor.

The right people Schenck and Company employees a generous staff – not subcontractors – of expert carpenters and installers, a surprising few of whom were experienced in the flooring industry when they applied for their jobs. They can be taught installation and woodworking, Schenck said. More important to him is how passionate they are about their work and how devoted they are to it. “I’ve got the best installers in the business,” he said, noting that several of them have been with the company for 15-20 years. “We approach every job as if we were in our own home and we were spending our own money.”

hen it comes to almost everything, Houston’s upward bound with plenty of bragging rights. What other city can claim its name was the first word spoken from the moon? (That happened July 20, 1969.) “Space City” is also where the astronauts aimed their cry to NASA’s Mission Control: “Houston, we’ve got a problem.” They knew where to find the help they needed. That’s the tradition of the Bayou City, so called because of the numerous natural canals that traverse the area. Houston’s name comes from the legendary Sam Houston, then President of the Republic of Texas. Houston’s geology developed from erosions of the Rocky Mountains, transported by rivers on their way to the Gulf of Mexico. The resulting de deposits make areas around Houston ideal for rice farming. Unfortunately the city’s spread (well over 100 miles from farthest tip to farthest tip) has encroached on all but the farthest outreaches. On the 18

ow that Galveston’s taking it’s rightful place among the premier beach destinations and luxury seaside residential sites, city promoters can laugh at the isle’s first moniker: “Isla de Malhado” (or “Isle of Doom”). Today a brand new Pleasure Pier, beautiful statuary, pocket parks and the incredible Gulf of Mexico delight walkers, bicyclists and motorists along Seawall Boulevard which is actually a protective device for the city that proved its worth during Hurricane Ike. The story of this wall and the actual raising of the city after the 1900 storm is a must-see historical movie shown in the same Strand area as the Jean Lafitte film. “Fun” is the byword in the Strand today, with its views of the harbor and the nation’s only remaining free major ferry (86+ cars each). obe Indians were probably the first to take note of what an exceptional site for peaceful living could be found in the West Palm Beach/Jupiter area. Wouldn’t they be surprised if they could see who agrees with them today? Jupiter is a quaint coastal town with beautiful, aqua-blue water and gorgeous (dog-friendly) beaches. West Palm Beach may be a little more “hoppin’” but both offer a calm, oasis compared to the hectic hustle and bustle of Miami. The name West Palm Beach we can easily understand. But Jupiter? It was a slip of the pen. Spanish explorers named the nearby Sound “Hobe” after their phonetic interpretation of the Indian name. A later mapmaker misunderstood and spelled it “Jobe.” A still-later mapmaker thought (Lord knows why) that this must be the Latin word for the god Jupiter. Long story short, Jupiter became the name, and nearby Juno Beach was named for Jupiter’s wife Juno.

Even more celebrities are in and out of the area, often performing at SunFest, an annual waterfront festival that celebrates art and music, attracting an international audience, many attracted by performers like Carrie Underwood, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Cindi Lauper, Pink Floyd, MGMT and Earth, Wind and Fire. Is it even necessary to mention the vaulted quality of golf in the West Palm Beach/Jupiter area? Courses almost outnumber all the other amenities combined. Other old pineapple fields were subdivided into what is now the community of El Cid, noted for its Mediterranean revival and mission-style homes. The owner named it the celebrated Spanish hero, El Cid (Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar). Cid means lord. Both neighborhoods, and others in West Palm Beach, are on the National Register of Historic Places, including Grandview Heights that has some of the city’s best historic homes. Snowbirds now dot the West Palm Beach/Jupiter area, but they are joined by a widely diverse influx of multi-age groups lured by the beautiful setting, incredible beaches and the luxurious high-end community living that inevitably develops in the wake of such a migration. Schools, shopping, arts, culture, entertainment, and cuisine — all have flourished to meet the demands of those who can afford, and who demand, the very best in all aspects of life.
