SHOP LOCAL Bonjour, This is Vanessa, owner of Vanessa Rothe Fine Art and design downtown at 418 Ocean Avenue Laguna Beach and as a local designer, artist, writer,curator from a family who has owned clothing stores in Laguna Beach for 50 years, decided to put together a beautiful “shop local” catalog celebrating the stories and storefronts of a unique curated list of local shops and galleries. We are united together. Our goal is to celebrate our unique small business’s and to showcase some of our colorful boutiques and galleries here in our home town. During this complicated time for small business we aim to raise awareness that we are all OPEN ONLINE and would like to kindly remind you that you can make a difference in our lives, our stores, and in the lives of our artists and designers that we sell. Some of us have known each other for years and we are all somehow connected. Peter Blake lives by my father Detlev in town, and we are now storefront neighbors with our two galleries on Ocean Avenue. Tania and Kerry Cassill are related, as Tania is married to Kerry’s brother, both own boutiques and design, and I have known them all since we were in high school. My sister Paulina opened a store and sells my line of clothing, and my fathers famous navajo jackets. Its a small town, and a small world. Here in our SHOP LOCAL catalog, almost every store is offering a SPECIAL SALE or percentage off. Peter Blake first opened the doors to his eponymous Laguna Beach gallery in 1993. In the years since, Peter’s faithfulness to his creative vision—irrespective of broader trends—has allowed him to champion vintage West Coast Minimalist works from the sixties through today, while also embracing emerging artists that continue working with Southern California’s signature art-historical themes. Peter Blake Gallery is now the longest standing and leading exhibitor of West Coast minimalism, with a focus on California Light and Space. Known for its rigorously curated solo and group exhibitions, the gallery’s program has an ongoing history of exhibiting artists long due for reappraisal. Exhibited artists include Peter Alexander, Lita Albuquerque, Charles Arnoldi, Larry Bell, Mary Corse, Ron Cooper, Tony Delap, Fred Eversley, Joe Goode, James Hayward, Scot Heywood, John McLaughlin, John M. Miller, Ed Moses, Helen Pashgian, James Turrell, and De Wain Valentine. Over the last decade, the gallery has also participated in a number of prestigious art fairs including The Armory Show, Art Los Angeles Contemporary, Dallas Art Fair, Design Miami, EXPO Chicago, and Seattle Art Fair.

GALLERY + DESIGN LAGUNA LOCAL STORY Vanessa Françoise Rothe was borna and grew up in the artists colony of Laguna Beach, the daughter to German clothier to the Stars, Detlev Rothe, and her French model mother Jacqueline Ricaud. She would come home from Thurston school to find Ron Wood or Kenny Loggins in her living room playing guitar with her father, and at 14 she was painting on silk to make custom jackets for the Rolling Stones. Rothe won the senior art contest at LBHS and received scholarships from the Festival of Arts. After graduating with honors in both Business Marketing & French literature at University of San Diego and UCI, she lived, worked, (and played pro Volleyball) in Switzerland for 6 years with her husband Tom Ribarich.There she worked as a graphic designer in advertising and traveled the globe, gaining a world of knowledge and inspiration. She later moved back to Laguna and attended Laguna College of Art and Design to study the academic figure and has become a fine artist for the last 20 years... in addition to her curatorial, graphics & clothing design, and writing/editorial work. For the last 15 years Rothe served as a writer, the WEST COAST EDITOR to FINE ART CONNOISSEUR MAGAZINE and has been curating fine art exhibitions in Paris, LA, New York and of course at her gallery here in Laguna Beach. Her local gallery, VRFA, carries her own work as well as some of the top figure painters in the world, Russian Realism/Impressionism and top names in California Impressionism. The gallery boasts many fine award winning artists from around the globe. Raised in Seattle, Washington, Kerrys’ love of textiles inspired her to study apparel design. While exploring Paris, Kerry found her passion for soft, printed Indian cotton. In 1992 Kerry ventured to India. While there she created a collection of comfortable resort, loungewear and bedding. Many fabulous boutiques, mostly in California began selling her hand block printed cotton creations. 5 years later, lala: a Kerry Cassill store emerged in Laguna Beach, CA. Brass Tack is a home goods store featuring conscious, thoughtful design for sustainable living, the work of small batch artisans and vintage homewares and clothing. “The shop is first and foremost a labor of love and secondly a business,” says owner Melissa Kanarek, “always in that order and always about the experience and the customer above all else. The name of the store was derived from Kanarek’s days as a couture furniture upholsterer in London. “I love that traditional upholstery is all about what is inside and the steps no one can see once the fabric goes on,” she says. “It’s about the time, care and skill required before it gets in front of the client. Brass tacks are the finishing details.” Kanarek partnered with Kristin Winter to open the current space at 311 Ocean Avenue three years ago. As well as focusing on beautiful, well-made and useful products, the shop also keeps life interesting for its customers with frequent events. Speakers address subjects like “How to Take Pictures on Your iPhone that Don’t Suck” and “Is CBD for Me?” Classes have included “Style School” and “Therapy Pants; A Mending Workshop.” A Wellness Night coincided with the opening of their Reiki Room, and the current pop-up Pierced offers the opportunity to have curated pierced ears.
