The Christmas holiday season is a busy time in Byron Shire as the locals roll out the welcome mat for summer visitors. Leading into the Christmas ‘rush’, an excellent way to stop, take a breath and rethink is the Uplift Festival from 12 to 15 December. Held at the Byron Regional Sport and Cultural Complex (BRSCC) the four day festival features evolutionary leaders, scientists, visionary activities, Indigenous elders, musicians and poets as they celebrate conscious evolution.

For the family, grandparents, Mums and Dads and especially the children, there is Carols by the Sea in Byron Bay on Friday 13 December. Over at Brunswick, enjoy the Twilight Markets in Banner Park on Wed 18 December from 3pm. Santa arrives at 7pm with his elves and at 8pm the Christmas lights are lit up in the majestic Norfolk Pine tree. All the shops will be open and have a bite to eat in one of the many cafes and restaurants adjoining the markets. In Bangalow, the Christmas Eve Festival showcases quirky and fun street performances, musicians, face-painting, puppet shows and flavoursome food. There really is something for everyone to enjoy.

Regional Architecture Our starting point for the Bower House was the request from the client for a permanent camp, a simple holiday shelter. The 7.4 hectare site contained numerous building restrictions; from access, topology, no services, road reservation, easements and fire controls, resulting in a small 400 sqm development area.

Designed as a sheltered platform, wedged into the steep slope just below the crest of a ridge and open on all sides to offer view lines to the surrounding peaks, outcrops and valleys. Bower House is a visually permeable structure that connects with its dramatic surroundings whilst always offering refuge as an option. Externally, a series of sliding metal shutters protect the building from fire and act to transform the building from an insulated metal bunker to a pavilion that nears complete openness. Internally, the living areas are contained within a single continuous space that opens theatrically to reveal the landscape beyond. The building is modest in both size and environmental impact, it is self sufficient in terms of energy, water and waste disposal. It uses passive and active building systems provide thermal comfort including northern orientation, high thermal mass, large ventilation openings and external block-out shutters.
