Property prices to keep growing According to the National Australia Bank’s Residential Property Survey, property prices are tipped to grow throughout all capital cities this year. NAB’s economists expect average capital city house prices to rise 6 per cent this year and 5 per cent next year. The bank says it has a more optimistic view than most on the back of the strong offshore investment. Foreign investors will continue to keep the pressure up on capital city house prices, with offshore buyers accounting for 11 per cent of new home purchases in the final quarter of last year, double that of two years ago. New figures released recently by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that residential property prices have risen in every capital city in the December quarter 2013. The figures show that the Residential Property Price Index, a measure including houses and attached dwellings, for the weighted average of the eight capital cities rose 3.4% in the December quarter, for a total rise of 9.3% over the last year. The total value of residential properties in Australia, rose to $5.02 trillion in the December quarter 2013, up from $4.83 trillion in the September quarter. The average price of Australia’s 9.3 million residential properties is now $539,400, up from $496,800 in the December quarter 2012.
