Morgan-Keefe Builders completed this timeless home in 2019. Architect Brad Wright specified the highest level of finish throughout including custom lighting out of California, true timbers on the ceiling, furniturefinish shiplap walls, custom porch shutters with hand-built louvers, custom ladder rails on the custom cabinetry, bookended quartzite counters, and 12” baseboards with a custom bevel top. Geothermal heating and cooling bring value and efficiency for years to come. Do You Need to Update Your Kitchen? Recent historical events mean that the function of the modern kitchen has changed significantly. Kitchens are still places where families and individuals cook their food. However, increasing numbers of people now work from home. What’s more, homeschooling is also more popular than ever. The upshot of all this is that the modern kitchen is not just a place to cook. It may now be the center of activity for working, meeting, and conversing. Do you and yours like to cook, eat, work, and converse in your kitchen? When your kitchen sees a lot of footfall, you understand the importance of ensuring that it stays contemporary. Are you looking for inspiration for your kitchen? Here are some of the latest modern kitchen trends:

they are also places where people socialize with the people they love most. Contemporary kitchen designs reflect this in that they are more artistic than functional. For instance, you are more likely to find an antique set of cast-iron kitchen scales and less likely to see the clinicallooking digital counterpart.

A Living Space

Open Design

Modern kitchens are both functional and welcoming. While kitchens are still for cooking and meal preparation,

Modern kitchens often have an open design and merge with the living room. These open-plan kitchens

22 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2022

are fashionable because they eliminate barriers between different household members. Thus, they encourage communication and integration. Uncomplicated Materials and Colors The contemporary kitchen uses a lot of plain refined materials. For instance, you might see matte black light fixtures, dark wood or walnut cabinets, and faucets made out of polished chrome. The color scheme in the modern kitchen is equally unpretentious. Trendy colors for kitchens include white, cream, green, matte gray, various shades of blue, wood tones, and splashes of black. Marble Countertops Marble, granite, and other natural stone kitchen countertops are still fashionable. Not much has changed in that regard. Colors such as white, gray, and black are contemporary countertop colors. If you already have a natural stone countertop in your kitchen, a little bit of eggshell blue paint on the cabinet doors, and a few cute vintage utensils may be all it takes to get your kitchen looking up-to-date. Kitchen Flooring When it comes to kitchen flooring, neutral tones such as polar white, cream, natural wood, and gray are in vogue. The current trend is for vinyl flooring that looks like another material. For example, marble-effect flooring is a sought-after choice. Warm And Rustic If you are looking for accent pieces to decorate your kitchen, go for items that look warm and rustic rather than clinical and functional. Concrete bowls of various

shapes and sizes are fashionable. The same is true of decor prints for the wall, decorative splashbacks, and big wooden chopping blocks. Get Inspired Should you need inspiration, peruse the Internet for some modern kitchen ideas, or visit some brick-andmortar businesses. Doing a bit of research into the latest kitchen fashions will help you find something you and your loved ones enjoy and help you keep your home looking contemporary. Adding Your Own Unique Touches While it is nice to update the look of your home, there is no rule asserting that your kitchen must look the same as or similar to those of others. Indeed, it is better to add a few unique touches to make your kitchen your own. Feeling Content Modernizing your kitchen is not about impressing anyone other than the people who live in your home. If you and the members of your family are happy, cozy, and comfortable in the kitchen, you have accomplished your mission. Winter 2022 | Fine Homes & Design 23

Selecting the Best Remodeling Contractor Many homeowners desire to make their home more luxurious with simple remodeling techniques; others create room additions for extra space. Any updates or remodeling efforts bring greater value to the home and increased comfort for those who own the home. However, it’s wise to assess the situation, determine what improvements you would like, then find the best home remodeling contractor to help you fulfill your needs. With so many contractors from which to choose, it can be overwhelming deciding which company to hire. Here are 6 things to look for when selecting a home remodeling contractor. 40 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2022

Expertise First, you want to ensure that you find only those contractors with the expertise you can trust. Contractors with some type of schooling will bring extra value to the job. Their expertise in home design will shine through. In addition, you want to make sure the contracting company has the proper certifications and licenses, such as:

• Home improvement License • Appropriate County Building License • Building Contractor License This, combined with several years of hands-on experience, secures a contracting company you can feel comfortable with.

Customer Delight One evidence of a fantastic home improvement

contractor is customers who are beyond satisfied; they are delighted with the work of the contractor. There is nothing quite as strong as testimonials from customers. Word of mouth advertising is powerful, and people tend to believe others. Past customers can provide details about workmanship, integrity, promptness, courtesy, friendliness, and more when they give their reviews. Testimonials are therefore crucial because you get a perspective of the company that you won’t get anywhere else. When reading testimonials, look for information that indicates the contractors:

• Went above and beyond the task given • Delivered exactly what was expected • Conducted themselves professionally • Handled themselves in a friendly way • Followed up after the job was completed

Stunning Portfolio An excellent job is evidenced by seeing the result in pictures. You are probably familiar with the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words; so, while a company may tout the benefits of working with them, seeing the completed work brings to light the beauty of the craft. A portfolio is an excellent way to view the company’s work and see it in action. Looking at pictures of the contractor’s work also provides you with possible ideas for your own renovation or room addition project. Check the company website for a portfolio option and discover the artistic designs of architects who love their work. A designer’s work reflects pride and creativity when their heart is in it. When you decide to take the step to invest in your home, you want someone who is just as invested.

Contractor’s Special Care for Your Home When workers come into your home to make modifications, upgrades, or additions, a lot happens. They will be bringing things in and out of your home and cutting into existing wood, while knocking down other portions of the home. All of this can be unsettling for many people. When you find a contractor who genuinely cares for your home as if it was their own, then you know you have found someone valuable. Trusting your contractor to come and go in your home and not having to worry is a wonderful feeling. It will be evident that a contractor is showing respect for your home by the way they treat it.

Contractor Considers Special Needs Some people have special requirements for their home. Whether you have a health concern, a concern about small children or pets, or some other issue, a contractor who takes it seriously is an asset. A good contractor will be able to work around your issues. For example, if you have health concerns such as asthma, a 42 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2022

caring contractor makes sure the dust particles will not aggravate your condition.

Open Communication Getting a whole new look for your home means you need to be involved with the process. Just how much involvement is a debatable question. Some contractors do not like the homeowner stepping in and asking too many questions or interfering once they have started. This makes things complicated for those homeowners who prefer to be more closely involved in the process. Also, as the job progresses, you may discover you want to add or change something. It is important to be able to communicate your desire. Fortunately, some businesses welcome questions and the communication lines are always open. Whether you simply want to revive your home with a renovation or update your space with a home addition, finding the perfect home remodeling contractor is the first step. These tips will guide you in your pursuit.

Creating the Zen Experience in Your Own Home Have you ever wished you had a place to escape for quiet time, a room away from it all where you can be alone with your thoughts? More people are creating such a space and calling it a Zen room. A Zen room is any place where you can sit and think without being distracted by the internet. It could be a closet, a corner of a room, or a whole room, but is created to provide calm, peace, and tranquility. Typically, Zen rooms are decorated with natural or neutral colors, black and white photographs, or artworks that depict the wonders of nature. You can find Zen rooms in homes worldwide, although they may have different names. It’s a room where you can escape for a while without leaving your home. A Zen room is conducive to meditation. It is not specifically a meditation room, although you may choose to use it for meditation. 44 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2022

What Do People Do in Zen Rooms? A Zen room can be a place for meditation, yoga, and other spiritual activities. It can also be a place to simply relax and feel at peace with yourself and with the world. In your Zen room, you might listen to music or sit quietly for a time. Whatever you decide to do in your Zen room, you will undoubtedly enjoy going there and having that space to do what you love. What if you want to create a Zen room in your own home? Here are some characteristics a Zen room should have. Emphasize Light There’s something therapeutic about natural light. It helps set your internal circadian rhythm for better mental and physical health, and it has a calming effect. Choose a room in your home that gets lots of light. Light

restful for your mind. Clutter is the enemy of calm. At most, have a single comfortable chair in your Zen room in a natural material like wicker or rattan. Some people don’t even have furniture; they just have a mat to sit on. If possible, choose a room with white walls, or lightcolored walls in shades of pale blue or green. Blues and greens are colors that relax the mind. You can also include inexpensive rugs and cushions that feel good against your feet and body. Add Touches of Nature Nature has a calming effect on the mind and body. Display plants near the windows where light comes in. You might even consider an inexpensive desktop fountain to enjoy the sound of flowing water when you spend time in your Zen room. A few simple photos of nature scenes, such as the ocean, will further enhance the calm you feel. Hide the Clutter

from the sun is the best because it is free, offers the full spectrum of colors, and changes throughout the day. A sunny window or a skylight are ideal. If this isn’t possible, try to use a lamp with full-spectrum lights, which will provide day-like light without glare. Some people prefer to have a dimmer switch attached to the light fixture so they can adjust the level of light for their individual needs. This can also make it easier to fall asleep afterward in a darkened room. Don’t use fluorescent lighting or any other type of lighting that can strain your eyes after a short time. Keep It Simple Keep it simple, and sparsely decorated. When you’re trying to relax or meditate, too many objects disrupt the calm state you’re trying to achieve. The last thing you want is lots of clutter to clutter your mind. Focus on what you can remove from your Zen room to make it more

If you live in a small house and can’t remove all the clutter, invest in a room divider to hide the clutter. Simply position the room divider in front of items you can’t remove, so they’re not visible. But remove as many distractions from your Zen room as possible to create a sense of calm. The main feature that makes a place Zen is the lack of distractions. There should be no television, no computer, no internet access, and no books to distract you. A Zen room is a place you use to escape from those things. Consider the Aroma of Your Zen Room Certain aromas are relaxing and add to the feeling of Zen. For example, when you feel tense or stressed, add a few drops of lavender or orange oil to a diffuser and let the aroma fill your Zen room. These two scents are proven stress relievers. Just take several deep breaths and let your mind and body relax as you inhale these calming scents. The Bottom Line To have a Zen room is a privilege; not everyone has one. It’s not about buying an expensive couch or having ornaments on your table, but rather about having an open mind and heart, as well as a quiet space to relax your mind and body. It can be anything you want it to be, as long as it helps you find your Zen. Winter 2022 | Fine Homes & Design 45

A Picture-Perfect Pivot

By Heather Hurst

t’s a story we’re all too familiar with, by now. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted lives across the country and the world, but its daily impact was most keenly felt at home. Our homes became our offices, schools and sanctuaries—leading so many people to take on renovations or home improvement projects that it rocked the design and construction sector and shifted the industry in substantial, even surprising ways. When daily life ground to a halt in 2020, interior designer Emily Richter’s practice EKR Interior Design Inc. was primarily focused on serving clients in the commercial and hospitality sectors. Practically overnight, restaurants replaced themselves with residences. Clients needed answers to storage, functionality and space issues, but beyond the practicality, Richter realized there was a common thread in what her clients sought: a sense of peace. For many people, coming through the long, shut-in winter of early 2021 into the light and freedom of summer felt like a release from captivity. Staying at home, everyone had received a crash course in how design can support and sustain not just productivity and organization, but one’s own mental and emotional wellbeing. Light, nature and space were no longer taken for granted, but rejoiced in. Everyone was getting back to basics.

So it was with Richter and the color gray. Gray has unequivocally been the stand-out neutral of choice thus far in the 21st century, but like anything that becomes fashionable, too much of a good thing becomes a challenge to reinterpret. When Richter’s client in Asheville told her they loved the color gray, she knew she was up to the task. What she didn’t expect, when she first took on the job, was how it would reignite not only her passion for the residential side of her work, but also for the versatility and elegance of the color gray. 46 Fine Homes & Design | Winter 2022

Entrusting Richter and her team with the project while quarantined offsite, the client did not get to preview the remodel until the project was completed. Emily found the modern mountain style of their house charming and knew its character would play well to a streamlined aesthetic.

“There are so many possibilities with remodeling and that’s something I really enjoy,” says Richter. “I love to envision the potential of what’s already there. Simplifying things is usually the best solution, only making changes where necessary.” In reimagining the client’s well-cared-for but outdated master bathroom, Richter looked first to the outdoors. By replacing the small window and creating a centerpiece glass wall, the space now maximizes light, while taking full advantage of its stunning privacy and views. A simple, modern retractable shade was installed to complement the clean lines, while affording the option for additional privacy. The floating vanity and cabinets are a custom design made by a local cabinetmaker, featuring a matte finish quartz composite countertop. The backdrop of artisan glass tile adds more interest to the space than did the previous wall to wall mirror. While overdesigning the room might have competed with its indisputable star—the view—Richter has carefully combined and selected sophisticated materials that elevate the space and truly rise to the occasion. The most prominent feature is the tile, a large format onyx porcelain is the main finish, accented with a glass mosaic. The subtle interplay of patterns creates interest, while the soft, muted gray palette allows the eye to rest and draws one’s view to the mountains beyond. Even the delicate, modern light fixture belies her expertise: instead of choosing a statement light that interferes with the view, she has skillfully incorporated an arrestingly simple and elegant wall fixture that radiates a sense of intimate, cozy luxury. It is, at once, an ideal setting for forgetting about the world, and also for preparing to face it once again. For Richter, it has reaffirmed her love of transforming a space and making it extraordinary. PAID ADVERTORIAL
