Yes, it’s that time of year again for us Medicare folks – Annual Enrollment Period (AEP). And, we will have signifcant changes for plan year 2025.
Medicare plans come in several favors:
Medicare Advantage Plan Drug (MAPD) plans for Medical, Rx and More.
Medicare Advantage Medical Only plans; these plans do not include prescriptions.
Dual Medicaid Medicare Plans or Chronic Disease Special Needs Plansthese are like MAPD’s for folks who qualify based on their individual status.
And - Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (PDP) - Tese are stand-alone plans sold separately; ofen paired with a MediGap Supplement or they can be embedded into a MAPD. Tese cover Rx prescription medications approved by Medicare.
Tat’s where your ANOC comes into play. “Annual Notice of Change”. You will receive this if you have any of these Medicare Plans above. Review your ANOC very, very carefully. Plan premiums, deductibles, copays, maximum out of pocket, formularies of covered drugs, networks of doctors and hospitals and the details of the extras will all be changing. Tis ANOC letter will specify what your plan you had in 2024 will look like in 2025 –but only if you keep that exact same plan.
Look for your ANOC in September.
For 2025 - we will see BIG changes in the PDP. I was present at the creation of these plans back in 2005 under President Bush, these changesrefect the improvements by President Biden under the Infation Reduction Act, 2022. Gad – that’s 17 years. Bottom Line – EVERY PDP will be changing : better and simpler.
PDP plans for 2025 will have a deductible of $590.00 Many plans will waive all or part of that cost for generic or lower cost medications. During the next stage, we’ll pay a copay or
25% of the cost of those drugs. When your “Out Of Pocket” (OOP) is equal to $2,000.00, then your covered Rx’s will be paid at 100%. Be sure to check your medications and confrm if they are on the formulary (list of covered RX) of the insurance company. And if your preferred pharmacy is working with that company to ofer you lower costs. In addition, all plans must ofer the option to pay out-of-pocket RX costs in monthly installment payments instead of all at once at the pharmacy if you have a deductible. Tis will be a beneft for many seniors on a fxed income.
WOW-Tat’s a heck of Knock:Knock–but it’s No Joke. Tere are resources to help you. Check out Medicare.gov or local NC Shiip ofce. All insurance agents who work with Medicare are required to have taken training on all these rules changes and the details for each individual plan they represent. INGREDIENTS
2 large Granny Smith apples (or any tart apple you prefer)
1 can refrigerated crescent roll dough
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup orange juice (or substitute with lemon-lime soda for a diferent twist)
1/2 teaspoon salt
Open the can of crescent roll dough and separate it into 8 triangles. Wrap each apple wedge in a triangle of dough, starting at the wide end. Pinch the dough to completely seal the apple inside.

Make the Sauce
In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, granulated sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt until thoroughly combined. Pour this mixture evenly over the apple dumplings.
Add the Liquid
Pour orange juice (or lemon-lime soda) around the edges of the baking dish, avoiding pouring directly over the dumplings.
Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown and the sauce is bubbling.
Serve
Serve warm, preferably with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. Enjoy!

Beginner’s Guide to QUILTING
Welcome to the wonderful world of quilting! Whether you’re seeking a creative outlet, a way to make personalized gifs, or simply a new hobby, quilting is a rewarding and fulflling craf. Tis beginner’s guide will walk you through the essentials of quilting, from gathering materials to fnishing your frst quilt.
What is Quilting?
Quilting is the process of sewing together layers of fabric to create a padded textile. Typically, a quilt consists of three layers:
Top Layer: Tis is the decorative layer, ofen made from various fabric pieces sewn together in a pattern.
Batting: Te middle layer, which provides warmth and thickness.
Backing: Te bottom layer, usually a single piece of fabric.
Materials You’ll Need
Before you begin, gather the following materials:
Fabric: Choose fabrics for your quilt top, batting, and backing. Cotton is a popular choice for beginners.
Tread: High-quality cotton or polyester thread.
Needles: Both hand-sewing needles and machine needles. Sewing Machine: While you can quilt by hand, a sewing machine speeds up the process.
Rotary Cutter and Mat: For precise cutting of fabric. Quilting Ruler: Helps in measuring and cutting straight lines.
Pins and Clips: To hold fabric pieces together while sewing. Iron and Ironing Board: For pressing seams.
Basic Quilting Steps
1. Choose a Pattern
Start with a simple pattern, such as a nine-patch or a rail fence. Tese patterns consist of basic shapes like squares and strips, making them ideal for beginners.
2. Select and Cut Fabric
Choose fabrics that complement each other. Use your rotary cutter, mat, and quilting ruler to cut the fabric into the required shapes and sizes according to your pattern.
3. Arrange the Pieces
Lay out your fabric pieces in the desired pattern on a fat surface. Tis step allows you to visualize the fnal design and make any adjustments before sewing.
4. Sew the Pieces Together
Using a quarter-inch seam allowance, sew the fabric pieces together row by row. Press the seams open with an iron afer each row.
5. Assemble the Quilt Sandwich
Layer your quilt top, batting, and backing fabric. Smooth out any wrinkles and pin or clip the layers together.
6. Quilting the Layers
Quilting refers to the stitching that holds the three layers together. You can quilt by hand or machine. For beginners, straight-line quilting with a sewing machine is a good starting point.
7. Bind the Edges
Finish your quilt by sewing a binding around the edges. Tis can be done by cutting strips of fabric, folding them in half lengthwise, and sewing them around the quilt’s perimeter.
Tips for Success
Start Small: Begin with a small project, like a baby quilt or a table runner, to practice your skills.
Take Your Time: Quilting requires patience. Don’t rush through the steps.
Practice Seam Allowance: Consistent seam allowances are crucial for a well-aligned quilt.
Join a Quilting Group: Engaging with a community can provide support, tips, and inspiration.
Congratulations on taking your frst steps into quilting! With practice and patience, you’ll create beautiful, handmade quilts that can be cherished for years to come. If you have any questions or need more detailed instructions, don’t hesitate to reach out to online quilting forums or local classes.
Happy Quilting!
How to Make FRIENDS as an Adult
Making friends as an adult can ofen feel like a daunting task. Unlike childhood or college, where friendships form organically through shared activities and environments, adulthood requires more intentional efort to build and maintain connections. However, the benefts of having a strong social network— like emotional support, companionship, and improved mental health—make it well worth the efort.
Start with Shared Interests
One of the most efective ways to meet new people is to engage in activities and hobbies that you genuinely enjoy. Whether it’s joining a book club, signing up for a cooking class, or participating in a local sports league, shared interests provide a natural foundation for conversation and connection. Platforms like Meetup.com or community bulletin boards can help you discover local groups and events tailored to your interests.
Leverage Your Existing Network
Don’t overlook the potential of your current social circle to introduce you to new friends. Attend gatherings, parties, or social events hosted by friends, family, or colleagues. Tese settings ofen provide a relaxed environment where you can meet new people with the added comfort of having mutual acquaintances.
Be Open and Approachable
Making new friends requires stepping out of your comfort zone. Approachability is key—smile, make eye contact, and show genuine interest in others. Simple gestures like these can signifcantly lower social barriers. When engaging in conversation, ask open-ended questions that encourage others to share more about themselves, and listen actively. Tis demonstrates that you value their thoughts and perspectives.
Consistency is Crucial
Building lasting friendships takes time. Consistency in your interactions can help to deepen these new relationships. Follow up with people you meet, suggest future meetups, and be proactive in making plans. Regularly attending group activities or social gatherings can also reinforce these budding friendships.
Utilize Technology
In today’s digital age, technology can be a valuable tool for making friends. Social media platforms or online forums related to your interests can help you connect with likeminded individuals. While virtual connections might difer from face-to-face interactions, they can still provide meaningful and supportive relationships.
Tips for Maintaining Friendships
Maintaining friendships requires efort and intentionality, especially as life becomes busy with work, family, and other responsibilities. Here are some practical tips to keep your friendships strong:
Regular Check-Ins: Make it a habit to reach out to friends through text, calls, or social media. A simple “thinking of you” message can go a long way in showing you care.
Plan Regular Meetups: Whether it’s a monthly cofee date or a weekly workout session, creating a routine for getting together fosters consistency and connection.
Celebrate Milestones: Acknowledge birthdays, promotions, or other signifcant events in your friends’ lives. Sending a card, a gif, or simply a heartfelt message can strengthen your bond.
Be Supportive: Ofer your support during tough times. Being there for a friend during challenges builds trust and deepens your relationship.
Stay Flexible: Life can be unpredictable. Be open to rescheduling or adapting plans as needed while ensuring you keep the connection alive.
Share Experiences: Engage in new activities together, whether it’s a cooking class, a hiking trip, or a book club. Shared experiences create lasting memories and bring you closer.
Making friends as an adult may require more efort and intentionality, but it is certainly achievable. By engaging in activities you enjoy, utilizing your existing network, being open and approachable, maintaining consistency, and leveraging technology, you can build a strong and fulflling social circle. Remember, the quality of friendships matters more than the quantity, so focus on cultivating meaningful connections that enrich your life.

The Opinions Of Others
by Laurie Richardone
Have you ever stopped speaking up, not because you didn’t have something valuable to say, but because you were afraid of what others might think?
No one is immune to other people’s opinions, not you, me, not world-class athletes, and artists.
Society amplifes this fear through cultural norms and social expectations. From a young age, we are taught to conform to certain standards to gain approval and avoid criticism. As we mature, have more experiences, and do some inner work, that grip can loosen, as it has for me.
By understanding the roots of our fear of judgment and developing a strong sense of self, we can liberate ourselves from the constraints of others’ opinions. Tis leads to greater personal fulfllment and authentic living. It leads to a life that is meaningful to you.
One of the greatest and most prolifc composers was greatly infuenced by the power that fear of other’s opinions had on him. Beethoven was such a man. Tis genius composer sufered greatly from this social phenomenon - Fear of others’ opinions. Despite his genius, he lived for several years in abject fear of others’ opinions.
Near the apex of his career he carried a secret, he thought if revealed, would destroy his professional life. For a time, he isolated himself rather than utter three words. I AM DEAF. He started to lose his hearing in his mid-twenties. He worried that the criticism would lead to discrimination against him and exclusion from the Viennese music circles that he had toiled so long to access.
. Beethoven reached a point and decided to expose his greatest fear, and in doing so he freed himself from the paralyzing grip of people’s opinions. When he stopped worrying about what other people thought about him, he shifed from performing for the world outside of him to performing for the world inside of himself. Tis is when he crossed over to the path of mastery, and became the composer he was meant to be.
So how do we dissolve this fear of other people’s opinions?
It involves a combination of self-awareness and consistent practice.
Here are 3 practical ways to work this:
• Challenge negative thoughts by reframing. When you catch yourself worrying about others’s opinions, ask yourself if they are based on facts or assumptions.
• Recognize your strengths and list all your achievements and positive qualities. Tis builds self-confdence
• Use afrmations - once we identify, and let ourselves feel where something is coming from, afrmations can be a powerful tool. I have been using afrmations for years, they have helped shif the outdated beliefs about myself.
However simplistic this may sound: stop worrying about what people think of you. Tere is no fruit on that tree.
Usually, we compare ourselves to others in search of a way to determine our value. We were taught that what we achieve, and acquire makes us valuable in the world.
I invite you to look at some places where you might be creating from a place of fear of the opinions of others, letting outside opinions steer your ship.
Stay committed to what you think is beautiful, not someone else. And remember that what you see as imperfections is what makes you unique. People will always have their opinions about us. So What…
Wishing you a joyful life !

One of the nicest fellows I’ve ever met is multiinstrumentalist, recording engineer and singer, Bruce Lang. I’ve known him and performed with him on and of for over ffeen years. He treats everyone he meets with kindness. He’s quick with a corny joke and his levity brings out the best in people.
Love is the reason Bruce landed here from Connecticut back in 1991. He followed a contra and swing dancing loving girl named Colleen to Swannanoa. As he’s recounting the story, I’m envisioning a sort of Laurel Canyon situation when he explains, “Colleen shared a large home near Warren Wilson College with several interesting people. Tey were poets, actors, musicians and even an instrument maker, all living together in this very unique and cool situation.”
Tey had met a year earlier when both attended Te Ashokan Music and Dance Camp, located near the Catskill Mountains of New York. She had signed up for their
Local Music Makers
Spotlight on Bruce Lang
A
By Peggy Ratusz
Western Swing Dance program. Bruce had a band with his brother called Te Dixie Dough Boys and they were hired to provide the music for that program.
“When we met she told me about the mountains and how she’s drawn to their beauty and magic. A year later I packed up my truck and headed here; which really kind of pissed of my brother since we’d been playing together all our lives. But it was time for a change. We’d been riding that wave of the whole ‘Urban Cowboy’ western swing music phenomenon and by then it was fading away and I could feel it.”
Since 1980, Bruce worked part time for the fedgling overnight courier service called Federal Express, and as fate would have it, they were hiring in Asheville at the same time he’d made up his mind to move here.
Soon he found work playing gigs through musicians Colleen knew within the contra dance community. One of his frst gigs was Te Farmer’s Ball that Warren Wilson still puts on today.
He was playing string bass a lot back then but the gig pay was low. He says, “I told myself I had to fnd other avenues if I wanted to still make a living playing music.”
Serendipitously, he and Colleen happened to go out swing dancing one night and they ended up at the Radisson Hotel where legendary pianist Steve Becker was playing along with guitarist Bob Zullow and drummer Perry Hines. Incidentally, Perry Hines was actually my frst drummer when I moved here ten years afer Bruce. But I digress…
As can happen in this town when you’re as good and versatile as Bruce, you start getting ofers to play for better pay and in steady situations. Bruce gives context: “I was recommended to band leader, Maddy Winer who had a band called Maddy & Masterpiece and they played six nights a week on the Sunset Terrace of the Grove Park Inn. Tat gig allowed me to quit my day job.”
Always itching to sing, Bruce was a bit torn, but afer three years he made the very hard decision to leave Maddy’s band to pursue a project that gave him the space to be more of a front man.
“Te piano player in Maddy’s band was actually the guy who pointed me in the right direction, advising me to start listening to Sinatra and learn the standards. Tey were all songs I was very familiar with; songs I learned from my mom who was a Broadway singer in her day. She’s still alive and sings them with me over the phone every day.”
Learning these tunes expanded what he could do. He started his own dance and wedding band. Sometimes he’d add a horn section to really give the people a taste of that big band era sound.
It’s really no surprise that Mr. Lang manifested this long lasting niche for himself. Case in point, for the past fourteen years he’s been playing weekly back at the Grove Park Inn, in a trio called Te 3 B’s. It features Bruce on upright bass and vocals, along with Masterpiece band alumni Bill Covington on piano and Brian Hedgepeth on drums.
Another branch of his many talents is that of recording engineer. Lang has his own 24 track recording studio out in Barnardsville, NC which is on the same property that he and Colleen live. It’s where they eat fresh eggs from the fock of chickens they raise, and where a babbling brook runs along the perimeter of their property, beckoning visitors, friends and recording artists to take a plunge on a hot summer day.
Bruce tells me the story of how the studio began. “When my brother and I had the western swing band, there was a guy who always came out to listen to us. He just so happened to have a recording studio located in the heart of Time Square in New York. He let me and the band host a party there where we had all these people come into the studio and we just recorded live, our sets; while the party was happening! In the long run, that recording needed some overdubbing so he let me come in afer hours and fx stuf.”
“I just fell in love with the process. His engineers were some of the nicest guys and I’d just observe what they were doing, how they were doing it. Tat was near the end of 1990 so when I moved here, that resource was no longer readily available to me. But someone told me how people were having luck recording music on Macintosh computers. Colleen’s computer was a Mac so I just started tweaking its capabilities, and experimenting while reading a lot of manuals. I was learning this technology as it was happening. Big Creek Recording has been going strong ever since we opened.”
Tere’s not a nicer or more deserving person in the world than “my cousin Brucie,” Bruce Lang.
Why Stretching is so Important?
Stretching is an essential component of physical ftness, particularly for seniors. With age, our muscles naturally lose their elasticity, and our joints become stifer. Tis can lead to a decrease in mobility, balance, and overall physical function, increasing the risk of falls and injuries. Regular stretching helps mitigate these issues by maintaining and even improving fexibility, which is crucial for performing daily activities with ease.
Incorporating a stretching routine into daily life can be simple and efective. Seniors can beneft from gentle stretches that target major muscle groups, such as the neck, shoulders, back, and legs. Tese stretches can be performed while seated or standing, depending on individual mobility levels. For example, seated hamstring stretches help elongate tight leg muscles, while neck rolls can relieve tension and improve range of motion. It’s important to encourage a slow and steady approach, focusing on breath and relaxation throughout the stretches. Performing these exercises consistently can lead to improved fexibility, better posture, and enhanced quality of life.
One of the primary benefts of stretching for seniors is the enhancement of mobility. Stretching exercises elongate muscle fbers and lubricate the joints, making movements smoother and less painful. Tis increased range of motion is vital for tasks such as reaching for items on a high shelf, bending down to tie shoes, or even getting out of bed. By incorporating stretching into their routine, seniors can maintain a level of independence and continue to enjoy their favorite activities without physical limitations.
Another signifcant advantage of stretching for seniors is its positive impact on balance and coordination. As we age, our proprioception—the body’s ability to perceive its position in space—can diminish. Tis can contribute to unsteadiness and a higher risk of falls. Stretching helps improve body awareness and control by engaging the core muscles, which play a key role in maintaining balance.
