Presenting the Third Annual designKC Award Winners…and Their Big Night of Celebration.
Photos by Brian Rice and Ali Fleming
In this special edition of designKC, we are proud to highlight the exceptional work of the teams of architects, designers and contractors who contribute their passion, skill and dedication to their clients and projects.
When entrants submi ed their best projects to our program last fall—nearly 200 in total—we conclusively saw a
thriving community of professionals who are excelling and elevating standards for everyone. Our judges noted that, too. They awarded 61 projects and honored an additional 29.
Winning one of our category awards or an honorable mention nod is a testament of transformation. What you see in these pages is a glimpse into what was a highly

complex—and sometimes yearslong— process, from conceptualization of the design to the nal touches. Architects and designers are o en the visionaries behind these projects, skillfully blending aesthetics with functionality to create environments that not only re ect the homeowner’s personality but also enhance their lifestyle. Remodelers take on the challenge of updating and revitalizing older spaces—sometimes not fully knowing what’s behind walls—and ensure that their work blends seamlessly with modern trends while preserving the home’s character. Builders bring dreams of a new home into existence, providing the cra smanship and technical skill necessary to turn ideas into reality.
An award-winning home project represents a perfect collaboration among these principals as well as the trades, including artisans, fabricators and suppliers. Each element contributes to the overall impact.
Design is a powerful force in shaping the private worlds of families across Kansas City, and we are excited to showcase the achievements of our local professionals who drive this industry forward.

This rede ned dining scene feels truly one-of-a-kind. Designer Celeste Antoine’s vision was to create a beautifully imperfect restaurant, blending creativity and innovation to deliver an upscale, immersive experience. Every element—from the menu to the design—was carefully cra ed to captivate and inspire.
The project overcame unique challenges, requiring trust and collaboration to seamlessly marry design and culinary artistry. Materials were sourced both locally and afar, including reclaimed wood and metal from a rural Missouri barn, transformed into stunning bar cladding and table bases. Honed marble bar tops, lush velvet drapes and abundant greenery add a touch of elegance, while imported antique po ery shines in a custom light installation and a dramatic backlit wall display.
The result is a dining space rich in texture and character, where guests feel transported to somewhere truly special right in their own city. INTERIOR

Downtown OP Duplex Turned O ce
What used to be a simple duplex has been completely reimagined into a stunning o ce space—one that not only meets the growing needs of the business but also shows o their design expertise in a big way.
The vision was to create a place that’s perfect for client meetings, entertaining and day-to-day operations. One clever move was a aching a detached garage to make everything more convenient. The real challenge, though, was striking that perfect balance—something that feels as comfortable as a home but still works as a professional o ce.
The solution was smart and stylish: two kitchens—a show-stopping one for hosting and a back kitchen for employees and event prep. Outside, there’s even a pu ing green and barbecue area, ideal for company get-togethers and client events. It’s functional, fun and undeniably chic.

Southern Charm
For a family that thrives in the outdoors, an ordinary backyard simply wouldn’t do. The project team took on the challenge of transforming this expansive, sloped space into a seamless extension of the home—an elegant yet functional retreat that embodies classic Southern charm.
Reorienting a dominant staircase unlocked the full potential of the yard, while an additional garage provided essential storage. Thoughtful tiering and natural stone retaining walls created a grand entrance, leading to a luxurious outdoor oasis. A deep-hued pool blends e ortlessly into the wooded surroundings, while the hidden hot tub and re-lit lounge area enhance the intimate ambiance.
Muted creams, so browns and grays unify the space, accented by wrought iron, teak and wicker furnishings. Fire bowls cast a warm glow, ensuring this outdoor haven is as enchanting by night as it is by day. With a retreat like this, the homeowners may never go back inside.
Tropical Tranquility
Nestled into more than two acres, this backyard retreat seamlessly merges island-inspired serenity with a passion for sports. The homeowners envisioned an all-season, open-air oasis where entertaining and relaxation ow e ortlessly.
To maximize privacy, the cabana was cleverly integrated into the home’s architecture, creating three direct access points to the outdoors. With its two strategic privacy walls and lush landscaping, the space o ers seclusion while maintaining an airy, inviting feel. Remote-controlled power screens provide instant enclosure, making the area adaptable to any weather.
The pool’s organic layout wraps around a sunken re pit, ensuring those in and out of the water remain connected. A cascading rain curtain at the south end adds a soothing ambiance, complementing the bocce court nearby. Thoughtful details—herringbone oak ceilings with customizable LED lighting and full-sun outdoor TVs—ensure that no game is ever missed, no ma er where you lounge. This is outdoor living, elevated.

Leawood Laid Back
Blending comfort with cra smanship, the project team transformed this backyard into a natural extension of the home. Navigating HOA restrictions and a beloved pin oak, the design prioritizes uidity and function while maintaining a re ned aesthetic.
To comply with code, a covered porch with a built-in grill and bar counter anchors the space, o ering an inviting, all-season gathering spot warmed by overhead heaters. A sunken re feature, deck lounge and dining patio create distinct zones, while festoon lighting strung above the outdoor dining structure brings height and ambiance.
Preserving the towering pin oak required innovation—traditional footings were replaced with an elevated deck that hovers over the roots, allowing water and light to nourish the tree. A restrained material pale e of limestone in varied nishes enhances cohesion, ensuring the design feels intentional and harmonious. The backyard is now sophisticated and e ortlessly livable.
English Garden
The design team embraced tradition and cra smanship to reimagine this formerly overgrown backyard into a structured yet inviting English garden. The vision: a balanced, purposeful space where ornamental beauty and functional gardening would coexist seamlessly.
The transformation required precision. The existing asymmetrical layout was reshaped into a classic, harmonious design, moving vegetable plots away from the creek to deter wildlife. A thoughtfully placed re pit and outdoor dining area ensure the space is enjoyed, not just maintained.
Unexpected elevation changes became an asset, introducing elegant stone steps so ened by lush plantings. The greenhouse, now on level ground with the garden beds, features a vintage concrete sink—its discovery and restoration a labor of love. With its re ned structure, carefully curated plantings and timeless materials, this garden is more than a place to grow—it’s a retreat, a gathering space and a testament to enduring design.

Riverside Resort
Perched on a dramatic landscape, this contemporary retreat balances bold architectural elements with organic textures, transforming a rugged site into a multi-tiered sanctuary.
Originally envisioned as a landscape enhancement, the project evolved into a full- edged outdoor resort, complete with a sleek boomerang-shaped pool and a discreetly integrated tennis court. The rocky terrain and steep drop-o posed challenges, but instead of ghting the site’s natural contours, the design embraced them. Staggered terraces carve out distinct spaces, maximizing functionality while preserving mature trees and showcasing sweeping city views.
The pool area harmonizes raw sandstone with luminous glass tile, while architectural metal screens provide a polished contrast. Perimeter re torchieres add a dramatic glow, de ning the outdoor space a er sunset. The result is a sculptural, dynamic landscape that seamlessly blends relaxation, recreation and re ned aesthetics.

Prairie Village Outdoor Living
Situated in the charming, established neighborhood of Prairie Village, this outdoor living transformation is a masterclass in sophisticated design within a compact footprint. What began as an unremarkable backyard evolved into a re ned oasis that balances both leisure and functionality for a growing family.
The challenge lay in integrating new features—including a pool, hot tub and cabana— into an already developed space without creating a fragmented aesthetic. By positioning the cabana strategically, the design enhances the sense of an enclosed outdoor room while preserving uid connections between the patio, replace and pool terrace. The pièce de résistance? A timber trellis linking the cabana to the replace, elevating both elements into a grand architectural statement.

The custom bookcases framing the o ce are a study in precision, balancing utility with a strikingly minimal aesthetic. These bookcases serve as a showcase for art and a discreet storage solution.

Old World Modern
The vision for this space was clear: create a kitchen with enhanced function while honoring the warmth and depth of the home’s traditional character. Surrounded by antiques and rich wood tones, the clients sought a space that would feel integrated, not out of place.

The team relocated the fridge and re ned the cabinetry to maintain ow and balance.

Hillside Modern
Tasked with a kitchen renovation, IDBP transformed a dated ’80s space into a sophisticated, functional hub that blends with the rustic charm of the home. The clients sought a design that could grow with them, balancing modern style with quality materials that would stand the test of time. The key challenge was integrating high-end appliances, storage and xtures into a space that was both open and highly visible to the rest of the home.
The solution: a wall of dark wood cabinetry that forms the foundation, providing much-needed storage and functionality. Adjacent to this, a lighter wall features custom reeded glass cabinets, which introduce texture and divide the space. A formerly unused o ce was transformed into a butler’s pantry, adding further utility. Artistic touches, like the striking Ijen Blue quartzite slab and a dramatic light xture, complete the design, o ering visual interest while maintaining the clean lines of a modern kitchen.
Timeless Elegance
MP360 Design + Build reimagined this builder-grade kitchen, infusing it with sophistication and lasting appeal while prioritizing functionality. The vision was clear: to transform a compact, dimly lit space into a highly functional hub for a multigenerational family that loves to cook together.
The design journey began with the selection of luxury elements, including Crystal Cabinet Works, known for its superior cra smanship and lifetime warranty. Thermador integrated appliances and innovative cabinetry solutions maximized storage and ow, while removing the peninsula opened pathways and improved circulation.
A focus on quality nishes—lighter cabinetry and countertops paired with darker tones for contrast— brightened the space. Custom inserts, such as spice racks and pullout trays, enhanced organization, while the addition of an island created distinct zones for cooking and gathering.
Despite space limitations and budget constraints, careful planning transformed this kitchen into a highly functional, elegant space that beautifully complements the home and its owners’ lifestyle.

Ethereal Ensuite
The owners of this 1990s bathroom envisioned a serene, so -modern retreat that blends functionality with understated luxury. Their ultimate goal: to enhance daily routines, prioritizing both relaxation and practicality.
The project presented several challenges, from an outdated whirlpool tub to awkward, angled walls. The design team reimagined the space, removing the arched so t and leveling the walls to create a more harmonious ow. A thoughtfully recon gured layout now includes a generously sized shower, freestanding soaking tub and custom his-and-hers vanity, maximizing space and storage.
The window, once a focal point of visual tension, was transformed with a graceful arch and a motorized Roman shade, allowing for privacy and light control. The nal result is a tranquil, elegant space with a carefully curated color pale e that invites relaxation and sophistication.

The project team transformed this formerly sprawling, outdated bathroom into a modern yet traditional retreat, balancing the distinct needs of both spouses while respecting the home’s architectural integrity. They successfully created separate yet cohesive spaces—one light and serene, the other warm and cozy— without sacri cing storage or style.
A key design change included reorganizing the closets. By swapping the “his” and “hers” sides, the larger end became a peaceful retreat with a freestanding tub, framed by a deep niche for a practical yet elegant touch. The existing window placement was maintained to preserve the home’s facade, while custom vanities—one antique and the other walnut-wrapped—de ne the separate spaces.

Weekend Luxury Bath
This project design team transformed a builder-grade outbuilding into a “weekend-fun” property for their long-time clients. Their favorite space? This primary bath.
Challenges included addressing the cavernous, open space. With a blank canvas and a desire for both beauty and a relaxed atmosphere, the project focused on blending glamor with a so bohemian touch. Mirrors and light xtures anchor the design, creating a striking visual focal point while also enhancing the room’s practicality. The team lowered the 25-foot-tall ceilings to foster a cozy environment. Large windows introduce natural light, while a textured wall covering and reclaimed teak shower tiles contribute organic warmth. With its warm colors and thoughtful design, the bath now radiates relaxation and elegance, making it a space where the clients feel truly at home.
Eclectic Escape
Cicada Co. was tasked with refreshing a dated 1960s bathroom, blending the original architecture with the homeowner’s distinct style. Drawing inspiration from the ’70s aesthetic of Boogie Nights, the client desired a space lled with warmth, texture and room for creative expression.
The design began with ideas for a oating vanity, new window placements and a curved shower wall. To accommodate these changes, they made a small 4x4 addition, extending into part of the utility room. Custom marble elements, including a dual sink and tub surround, elevate the design, while a oor-to-ceiling curtain and vintage lighting xtures add charm. A curved tile wall ensures privacy, and terrazzo ooring brings everything together.
Meticulous planning and innovative problem-solving were key to overcoming the challenges of working within a mid-century modern home, resulting in a space that seamlessly blends bold design with practicality.

The Luxe Lower Level
A decade a er building their home, the homeowners entrusted Schloegel Design Remodel to elevate their un nished basement to the same impeccable standard as the rest of the house. Collected Living Design reimagined this historic home’s kitchen, pantry, mudroom and o ce, ensuring each space felt cohesive with the home’s original charm. Though previous updates had modernized the kitchen, they no longer met the homeowners’ needs and lacked architectural character. The goal was to create a space that seamlessly blended modern convenience with period-appropriate details—evoking the question: “Is this new or original?”
With a limited footprint, the design team optimized every inch. They carefully incorporated elements from the home’s past, mirroring intricate details from the dining room’s built-in bu et onto the kitchen cabinetry and range hood. Original trim was salvaged and replicated to maintain authenticity, while historical color pale es reinforced the home’s storied aesthetic. The small o ce, once covered in aged fabric and damaged plaster, was transformed with built-in storage and wider cased openings that honor the home’s cra smanship. The result is a re ned, harmonious extension of the home’s legacy.
A Marbled Mood
This kitchen and hearth project revolves around the striking presence of Brazilian Arabescato marble. The kitchen island, with its bold waterfall edge, seamlessly merges with a rich walnut bar, introducing a warm contrast. A chiseled live edge, created in response to an unexpected ssure in the marble, enhances the organic beauty of the stone, turning a challenge into an intentional design feature.
The living room’s replace mirrors this elegant aesthetic, with the same marble wrapping around the hearth and extending into a oor-to-ceiling Dekton-clad surround. Meticulous planning ensured a re ned nish, from relocating electrical components to installing the full-height marble backsplash before cabinetry. The result is a space that balances natural textures with contemporary precision, allowing each material to shine. This project showcases the artistry of embracing imperfections, transforming obstacles into de ning elements of the design.

Vision in the Village
With a keen eye for design, the homeowners of this Prairie Village residence sought to reimagine their space, blending Old World charm with modern re nement. Walls were opened, rooms were rede ned, and a striking new kitchen took shape—cra ed for both intimate family moments and grand entertaining.
During demolition, extensive termite and wood rot damage was uncovered, requiring structural reinforcement before the transformation could proceed. The design also introduced challenges, particularly in executing the elegant curved staircase and custom handrail, which had to balance aesthetic appeal with strict building codes.
The recon gured layout now o ers a natural ow, beginning with a grand entryway framed by graceful arches. A sophisticated pantry and prep kitchen complement the spacious new kitchen, while glass partitions lend distinction to the front room, now a re ned library lounge. Personal antiques and curated details complete the vision, infusing this home with enduring character and charm.

Koselig Comfort Home
This rst- oor renovation reinvented the kitchen, hearth, living room, entryway, laundry and primary bath, embracing Scandinavian design in uenced by the homeowners’ Norwegian heritage. The vision was to replace dark, outdated interiors with a light- lled, inviting atmosphere that embodies “koselig”—a deep sense of warmth and well-being. Natural materials, an airy layout and a neutral pale e create an environment that feels both modern and deeply rooted in tradition.
Structural changes, including wall removals and new window installations, were essential in achieving the open concept while maintaining architectural integrity. Carefully selected elements such as wide-plank white oak ooring, black-framed windows and a striking 18-foot, dual-sided porcelain replace establish a re ned aesthetic. Stained oating vanities and porcelain-wrapped showers in the bathrooms enhance the serene ambiance, while custom features like a built-in dog station add personal touches. The nished design strikes a balance between contemporary sophistication and the welcoming spirit of a koselig home.
Dubbed “The House of Angles,” this renovation focused on re ning awkward layouts and updating dark, dated nishes. The redesign improved storage, enhanced ow and introduced a look that be er re ects the homeowners’ style.
In the kitchen, a poorly proportioned island and cramped pantry were replaced with custom cabinetry featuring rollout shelves, maximizing space while maintaining a streamlined aesthetic. The oversized hood now serves as a striking focal point, creating the illusion of perfect symmetry.
The basement bar, once divided by an unnecessary wall, was opened up for more cabinetry and be er accessibility to the backyard pool. A concealed ceiling feature now discreetly hides exposed piping discovered during demolition.
The living room built-ins, previously di cult to style, were reimagined with well-spaced shelving and a custom cast stone replace surround. Each change was made with precision, bringing cohesion and fresh energy to this revitalized home.

This Old Leawood home, beautifully updated in its previous ip, provided a strong foundation but lacked the character its new owners craved. Nest Interiors infused bold color, texture and personality throughout, ensuring the space re ected their eclectic style.
Custom built-ins in the living room now showcase a treasured record collection and travel nds, while striking hues draw a ention to the replace artwork. The dining room’s deep black walls and rich textures add drama, and the primary suite embraces bold wallpaper and warm tones for an enveloping feel. Layered textiles, curated art and collected pieces turn this house into a deeply personal home.
This basement remodel masterfully blends vintage elegance with contemporary living. Inspired by the Roaring ’20s, the space features hidden doors, rich textures and a moody bar reminiscent of a classic speakeasy. A carefully curated arcade area brings in nostalgia, while a home gym ensures balance between entertainment and wellness.
Navigating logistical hurdles—like a narrow staircase and unexpected plumbing issues—required precision and creativity. With meticulous cra smanship and careful planning, the result is an inviting, dynamic space that celebrates the homeowner’s passions.
This freshly revitalized 1933 family home balances modern design with historic charm. Key updates include a spacious, open-concept kitchen with navy and white cabinets, a custom staircase and a revamped mudroom. The dining area now opens to the backyard, while playful wallpaper and vintage-inspired elements infuse color and personality. A speakeasy-style wine room adds drama, and bespoke touches, such as a salvaged mirror and custom cabinetry, personalize every space.
The Old Fashioned
This project centered on a renovation that harmonized tradition and modern functionality. The homeowners sought to expand the kitchen of their 1928 home for cooking, entertaining and family gatherings, all while preserving the home’s historic integrity.
The solution came through innovative space planning, maximizing every inch of available space. The design included a large kitchen island, custom cabinetry and distinct zones for cooking, entertaining and personal tasks. A standout feature is the hand-picked granite slab island, with a butcher block for prep work. Custom pocket doors hide the laundry and bath area, adding to the kitchen’s elegance. In the upstairs staircase, the team integrated walnut spindles to match the original millwork. A carefully cra ed hallway now provides access to a fourth bedroom, ensuring the home’s ow and accommodating the homeowners’ needs in terms of space and style.

Summit House
This home merges modern design with zen-inspired elements. The focus on natural materials was paramount, with countertops and tiles sourced from the earth, including high-end granite, marble and quartzite. A striking feature is the 8-foot-high granite anchor wall that extends from the basement to the roof, unifying the home’s interior and exterior with black tones. A natural limestone wall creates a private outdoor space, providing tranquility despite the home’s downtown Kansas City location.
A major challenge was the tight 13-month timeline, requiring long hours from the crew to meet the Artisan Home Tour deadline. Additionally, the Missouri limestone-rich site demanded 45 days of excavation to prepare the ground. Despite these obstacles, the project successfully showcased the team’s dedication and skill, resulting in a home that masterfully combines warmth, privacy and highend nishes.

Modern on Cherokee
Set on a steep lot, this striking modern home maximizes the terrain, utilizing a walk-out lower level for entertainment while carefully addressing drainage concerns. Selectively removing younger trees and adding sod helped balance natural beauty with practical solutions, allowing the larger trees to thrive while maintaining the natural ivy growth on the steeper sections of the lot.
Internally, the design process was a delicate balance between contrasting visions. Being a husband and wife team, one naturally wanted a more masculine modern design, where the other wanted a so er more feminine Scandinavian modern design. Lumberman’s Row
Lumberman’s Row brings the elegance of late 19th-century East Coast shingle-style homes to a Kansas City lakefront. Situated in the New Longview community, this home blends historical cra smanship with modern livability. This Warrensburg home is an architectural response to the desire for both seclusion and social spaces. The home’s design skillfully integrates with the natural landscape, o ering a peaceful sanctuary while allowing for expansive gatherings.
One of the primary challenges was incorporating a nine-car garage of considerable size without overwhelming the home’s aesthetic. The design features long linear massings, solid along the length with transparent ends that frame stunning views. This estate is a masterclass in custom design, where history and cra smanship converge to create a residence that feels both grand and inviting.
Avenue Renaissance
Trove Homes helped reimagine a challenging layout into this striking residence tailored for both daily life and grand entertaining. The homeowner, an industry expert in remodeling and new builds, sought to create a space where form and function coalesce with artistic precision.
A centrally placed staircase once disrupted the home’s flow, making spaces feel disconnected. By relocating it to the back, the design team introduced openness, allowing light to flood in from expansive windows overlooking the pool, pond and golf course. The former staircase space was transformed into a dramatic plaster fireplace, hand-sculpted by a Kansas City artisan—an exquisite first for the region.
A refined yet bold kitchen now serves as the heart of the home, featuring a massive island, leathered Taj Mahal quartzite and custom bronze mirrored cabinetry. The dining room, framed by sweeping corbels and a hand-painted mural, enhances the home’s artistic narrative. Avenue Renaissance is a masterful fusion of craftsmanship and modern luxury.
Mega Marble Makeover
This home was transformed to suit the lifestyle of two busy executives who love to entertain. From the moment they closed on the house, the design team envisioned a full-scale renovation to maximize both form and function.
The 3,000-square-foot rst- oor overhaul centered around relocating the kitchen to what was once the family room, creating a vaulted, light- lled space with wall-to-wall windows and doors. This shi established an open-concept ow while maintaining distinct areas for dining, lounging and gathering. A full marble surround in the kitchen became a de ning element, seamlessly integrating with the dining room and bathrooms for a cohesive aesthetic.
Executing this level of detail required precise coordination. From relocating windows to integrating architectural lighting within the countertops, every component was meticulously planned. The nal design blends warmth and re nement, o ering a sophisticated yet welcoming environment where the clients can host with ease.

Olathe MCM
This mid-century modern home has a fresh perspective while maintaining its original character. The redesign preserved key elements like repurposed cabinetry and existing stonework, blending them with contemporary updates to meet today’s standards.
A major challenge was removing two load-bearing walls in the kitchen without vertical supports. The solution—a custom-engineered “Super Truss”—allowed for an open, uninterrupted space. Budget considerations required thoughtful revisions, but through collaboration and creativity, the nal design remained true to the client’s vision.

Kali Buchanan Interior Design undertook the restoration and redesign of this 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival estate, originally crafted by renowned architect Robert Law Weed. The goal was to preserve the elegance and charm of the original architecture while incorporating the conveniences of modern living.
The renovation focused on restoring key features such as the iconic clay tile roof and terracott a floors, while updating systems for efficiency and functionality. The kitchen was expanded, and the second-floor layout was redesigned to improve flow and utility.
Special attention was given to integrating antique furnishings and objects, with large windows allowing natural light to flood the rooms, creating an open and airy atmosphere. The outdoor spaces, including a redesigned breezeway and expanded patio, provide seamless connections to the surrounding landscape. The result is a home that respects its rich history while embracing contemporary living.

Cityscape Vista
Trove Homes took on the challenge of revitalizing this sprawling estate. This 9,000-square-foot home underwent a complete renovation to enhance both function and design. The owner, who had visited the house as a child, sought to open up the layout and make the most of the downtown views. The original design featured cramped rooms and awkward angles, making the ow of the space di cult. To address these issues, 23 new headers were added, and walls were removed to create a larger kitchen with a custom island and expansive views. In the primary bathroom, the design was reworked to include a spacious shower, private water closet and tub framed by plaster and wood nishes. The basement now features a curved bar, cozy seating areas and a zen garden, ideal for entertaining. A custom oating staircase adds a striking design element, completing the home’s unique combination of functionality and style.
