SMCSU BY-ELECTION SEASON

Cameron Anderson

Feeling voter fatigue from the recent municipal, federal, and provincial elections? Well get ready-- St. Mike’s is having a byelection! The candidates polished off their applications on October 21st. In total there are an astonishing 21 candidates; no doubt you have seen their campaign posters around campus. The election will be held on Tuesday November 1st. “Enthusiasm amongst SMC students at an all time height.” Says Kristian Koschany, Chief Returning Officer of SMCSU. “I encourage people to come out and vote.” SMCSU President Kyle Farren also highlighted the fact that SMCSU is one the only three colleges on campus that holds byelections. “I’m very excited to see so many people run,” he commented. “Not only are they running, but they’re promoting the values of SMCSU across campus.” Vote at Brennan Hall, Kelly Library, Sidney Smith, and Loretto residence. An optional census is on the ballots, the results of which should be posted in our next issue.

BRENNAN REMIXED Dan Seljak

Brennan Hall is getting a major facelift in the coming weeks. The student lounge on the south side of the historic St. Michael's building will be undergoing extensive renovations for approximately 12 days beginning on Tuesday, October 25. During this time the lounge will be closed to students, with the majority of student activities moved to the Coop, the old Brennan cafeteria. This monumental change comes on orders from the President's Office, with President Sister Anne Anderson leading the way on the project. “This is Sister Anne's idea – it's been brewing [with students] for a while, but it was her initiative,” said SMCSU President Kyle Farren. “That being said we [SMCSU] have been in talks with her, along with other students, to get this done for a while.” Farren and Sister Anderson have described a number of changes to the student space which they hope to turn into - what Farren calls “the centrepiece of the College.” While initial hopes had been to extend the terrazzo flooring that was initially present, the realities of the

space called for a different solution. As such, a wood laminate will be used. New couches will also replace the current blue seating arrangements. Farren noted a donation from alumni will help provide this new furniture. Additionally the walls will be painted to provide a new colour scheme for the space and new televisions will be installed. While the room will be modernized, Farren notes that a trophy case will be added to the West wall in

the colour scheme of the traditional Double Blue to maintain the heritage St. Mike's look. There are number of changes to Brennan that appear to be less aesthetic in nature, yet address a number of student concerns. The piano and the pool table will be repaired, the irregular internet service in the lounge will be addressed, and the outlets used primarily for student laptops will be replaced to prevent outages.
