KYLIE JENNER

THE BEAUTY BILLIONAIRESS

SAMPLE

When “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” debuted in 2007, most of the Kardashian-Jenner girls were unknown. Kylie Jenner was only 10 years old - a precocious little kid enjoying time with her family. Now, Jenner has a daughter of her own and her own beauty empire. It all began during Season 10 of the show, when Kylie began focusing on her first solo venture, a line of hair extensions, which was her first foray into beauty.

6

The following season, the 17-year-old became the focus of the season as the media noticed that she had some work done and her lips became the hot topic. This ushered in the beginnings of her very own beauty empire, thanks to her creation of Kylie Lip Kits - pairs of matte liquid lipstick and lip liner in nude, pink, and brown that retail for $29 - sold out within minutes after going on sale at KylieCosmetics.com.

Forbes magazine, Kylie sold 51% of her company to publicly traded Coty, Inc. for $600 million. Now; Kylie Skin. She says on her website “Skincare and makeup go hand in hand and Kylie Skin was something I dreamt up soon after Kylie Cosmetics. I’ve been working on this for what feels like a lifetime so I can’t believe it’s finally here!”

SAMPLE

Kylie has opened up in the past about the anxiety she experiences from being so famous, especially after the launch of her Lip Kits proved so successful. Her Lip Kits soon became Kylie Cosmetics and her skyrocketing fame has earned her 200.9m followers on Instagram. Named the youngest-ever self-made billionaire by

Her new skincare range is all cruelty free, vegan, gluten free, paraben and sulfate free and suitable for all skin types. “Birthing a whole new team, manufacturing, fulfillment etc. separate from my cosmetics line was challenging but here we are!” She says. This mumpreneur sure knows her cosmetics. In a make-up tutorial to end 7

all make-up tutorials, with Vogue US that details her summer make-up look, Kylie shares her go-to tips.

Eyes first, base second Jenner applies her eye make-up before anything else. The fall out from an eyeshadow can ruin your base if you do foundation first. “The eyeshadow falls down and then your face isn’t cute anymore,” Jenner says, while wiping off the excess and moving on.

Wiping it off as one of her last steps, adding, “I’m actually trying to make this lighter here so I have more of a… it just shapes my face.”

Two shades of mascara Jenner reveals she prefers brown on the bottom lashes, feeling that black is “too much”.

SAMPLE

Baking is everything “I can’t do my make-up without baking,” she says. Applying a lighter powder to her jawline in order to set and lighten the bottom half of her face. “For anyone who doesn’t know what it is, baking actually… it’s like powder is soaking into your skin and leaving a residue of colour.” 8

“I used brown on the bottom because I don’t like too much mascara on the bottom. So this just gives me more of a subtle look.” Kylie recommends if you ever get mascara on your eyeshadow or anything let it dry completely because it just flakes off.

Oil up In a July 2019 interview, Jenner revealed that she uses essential oils to keep her skin looking its best. Even though Jenner is worth

over a billion dollars, most of the oils she gets won’t break the average person’s bank account. It seems like Jenner uses these oils on a daily basis, as part of her normal shower routine. She applies it liberally “after [she turns her] water off and [she’s] drenched.”

And then bronze and highlight to give your skin that glow and shape. Kylie is Queen of highlighting. “I use it on the edge of my nose— the more you do, the thinner your nose will look.”

Wig out Kylie is in love with Jen Atkin’s Ouai Treatment Mask. “I just leave it in for 15 minutes before I shower. It’s a really great way to make your hair healthy again, and really nourish it.”

SAMPLE

Jenner isn’t too picky about the type of oil. They have to be organic, but she changes it up between “almond oil, or olive oil, or jojoba oil.” Anyone can buy these off of Amazon, so fans can replicate Jenner’s routine pretty easily.

Glow up Kylie goes on top of her moisturized skin with her foundation. “I recommend going in front of your window, see what the daylight is like, and just make sure that it’s all good in the hood.”

Known for her everchanging style and colour, Kylie often keeps her hair short and healthy, creating whatever look she wants with wigs. “I’m a wig girl, I love wigs, and they’re super easy,” she says.

W

e spend big on our looks - over $3756 per year for the average woman in the U.S., according to OnePoll for Groupon - with many women going into debt paying for their beauty needs. It seems we have accidentally created a very high bar for ourselves and each other, when it comes to our appearance. So, why do we also tear each other down for it?

10

SAMPLE

11

‘You’re so pretty! (Whispers) ‘She’s so up herself.’ ‘I’d kill for your hair!’ (Whispers) ‘Totally has extensions.’ ‘You spend HOW MUCH on your hair treatments?!’ ‘I bet she’s had work done!’

Well, we think beauty spending is all about vanity? Here’s the kicker a groomed and physically attractive appearance has been shown to influence career advancement and potential earnings. How infuriating is that?

All that precious time and effort women spend on their hair, clothing, nails and other beauty routines is often met with social shame. We even strive for that ‘natural’ look, in a bid to look fantastic without any effort.

The Wall Street Journal asked women how they felt about their monthly beauty spending, and one respondent said, “If you come into the office looking sloppy, people notice.”

Why? Because people are judgey! We use words like fake, vain, shallow, frivolous, stuck up and even worse, plastic, bimbo or barbie, to casually judge another woman’s appearance.

Yes, it’s true. Research shows that our looks are a significant factor influencing career advancement and potential earnings. Fair? Of course not. Fact? Unfortunately.

Our society expects women to look a certain way, but then we criticize each other for trying to achieve it. So, why do we do this?

The study found that women who focus their attention on their grooming habits as opposed to, you know, their actual jobs — get paid more in the workplace.

SAMPLE

12

“A truly beautiful woman is one who raises other women up.” Good grooming is considered an essential part of a sales person’s tool for success and the effort a person puts into his or her appearance signals how much effort he or she will put into other activities, like her job, according to the study.

younger, healthier and more attractive, we also have a pesky little phobia about ageing.

SAMPLE

So, ‘attractive’ people tended to earn higher salaries and grooming practices, such as applying makeup and styling hair and clothing, actually accounts for nearly all of the salary differences for women of varying ‘attractiveness.’ In addition to the growing obsession with social media, filters and image editing feeding the addiction to making ourselves look

The way we physically present ourselves to the world influences everything from our self-confidence, the way others perceive us, our intentions and let’s face it, our careers. Women clearly have enough to contend with overcoming career and social bias based on our attractiveness, so let’s do each other a favour - accept and allow others to focus on their appearance as little or as much as they want with any judgement and name calling. A truly beautiful woman is one who raises other women up. 13

Why We Need

Collagen T

he word collagen is derived from the Greek word “kolla” meaning glue. So basically collagen is the “glue” that holds the entire body together.

Other factors such as smoking, sugar and ultraviolet rays speed up this decline which ultimately leads to wrinkles, sagging skin and a myriad of physical issues.

SAMPLE

It’s a protein produced in the human body and is naturally found in our bones, tendons, muscles and skin, the cornea of the eyes, blood vessels, gut lining, teeth, and nails. Our collagen is in abundance when young, but unfortunately production starts to decline at about age 25, and continues to decrease even more in women after menopause.

With its gel-like, smooth structure covering and holding our bones together, collagen allows us to glide and move without pain and relieve the pain associated with joint stiffness. When we lose collagen, our tendons and ligaments start moving with less ease, leading to stiffness, swollen joints, leaving us feeling stiff or in pain when we move.

15

Collagen supports the growth of new cartilage to keep joints flexible and mobile. This absence of pain and inflammation of joints and tendons allows us to live an active and enjoyable life.

traced back to inflammation or irritation stemming from an unhealthy gut.

SAMPLE

It even helps keep your immune system strong so your body can fight off viruses. The biggest digestive benefit of consuming more collagen is that it helps form connective tissue which “seals and heals” the protective lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Many illnesses can actually be 16

So, if you’re looking to detox your body of harmful substances, improve blood flow and keep your heart young, collagen is extremely helpful to heal your gut and improve overall immune function. It has to be broken down by the stomach just like ever Collagen is found in the connective tissues of animal foods. For example, it’s found in large amounts in chicken and pork skin. One particularly rich source is

bone broth, which is made by boiling the bones of chicken and other animals. Gelatin is basically cooked collagen, so it’s very high in the amino acids needed to produce it. When you eat protein, it’s broken down into amino acids and then reassembled, so the collagen you eat wouldn’t translate directly into higher levels in your body.

SAMPLE

A supplement is ESSENTIAL if you are over 40 and cant always eat a collagen producing diet. Two types of supplements are gaining popularity — hydrolyzed collagen (collagen hydrolysate) and gelatin. Gelatin is created when collagen is cooked. These have already broken the large protein down into smaller peptides, which are more easily absorbed in the body. Taking your collagen supplements along with a good protein rich diet and your hair, skin, nails, and body will love you.

HOW TO GET H E A LT H Y H A I R , S K I N A N D NAILS FROM WITHIN

Y

our skin is your body’s largest organ and it’s also your fastest growing organ, which means cell turnover is happening all the time. So, having beautiful hair, skin, and nails is more than just just about looking good, it’s a symbol of your whole-body health.

SAMPLE

To keep your hair shiny, your skin glowing, and your nails long and strong, there are a few things you can do. Due to the influence of the gut-skin axis, there is a strong connection between what you eat and

18

skin issues. The Western diet is full of inflammatory foods including sugar, dairy, and refined cooking oils and carbs, which have all been associated with an increased prevalence of acne. Include lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, plant-based proteins (like beans and nuts), fatty fish, and fresh herbs and spices in your diet. Vitamin K-rich leafy greens like spinach and kale, broccoli and cabbage, cherries, raspberries, and blackberries all help fight inflammation and can help heal skin issues.

SAMPLE Gut infections can also play a role in the appearance and condition of your skin. Candida overgrowth can be at the root of your eczema, dandruff, nail

fungus, and other skin issues. The yeast cells are able to permeate your gut lining, causing your gut to become leaky and allowing toxins, microbes, and yes,

19

yeast, to escape your gut and travel throughout your bloodstream. Once in your bloodstream, Candida can colonize other areas of your body, including your skin. So, start off with a probiotic to help restore balance to your gut. Your liver, kidneys, and lungs are your body’s major detoxifying organs, so when these become overburdened, toxins begin to ooze out of your skin as a way to flush them out of your body. This can cause all sorts of blemishes and skin-related issues, so you’ll want to make sure your detoxification pathways are functioning as optimally as possible to keep your skin from working overtime.

foods can help, including artichokes, beets, broccoli, grapefruit and spinach. Hydration is so important for healthy, supple skin, as all of your body’s cells, including your skin cells, are made up of water and therefore require plenty of hydration to function properly. Without enough water, your skin will become dry, flaky, and wrinkly. Water is also necessary for the detoxification process, helping to flush toxins from your body.

SAMPLE

In addition to drinking water, there are other ways you can help eliminate the build-up of toxins in your body. Eating detoxifying

20

Unfortunately, you lose water quickly throughout the day and any water you drink goes to all your other organs first, before reaching the skin. To keep your skin well-hydrated, be sure you’re drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day, and if you’re very active or outside in hot weather you’ll need to drink even more.

Lastly, try switching to non-toxic body products. Anything you put on your skin–lotions, cosmetics, deodorants, cleansers, etc.– can be hiding hundreds of undisclosed chemical compounds that irritate and inflame your skin. And because your skin is so porous, these toxins can easily penetrate your bloodstream and circulate throughout your body,

wreaking havoc on more than just your skin. These lifestyle tips go beyond skin-deep, so you can feel confident knowing that you are nourishing your body, both inside and out. And by taking control of your health, you will get the added bonus of beautiful hair, skin, and nails so you can look as young as you feel.

Facelifts? 22

Y

es. Facelifts are still a thing. In fact, surgeons have improved in their techniques so much in recent years, the once most-talkedabout Hollywood procedure seems to have vanished off our radars, along with the scarlines.

SAMPLE

Why? Because it’s almost impossible to tell who has had one these days and the natural results are no longer tabloid fodder.

There’s a wave of plastic surgeons cultivating a new, and decidedly more subtle, approach to the face-lift and the techniques have become minimally invasive, requiring significantly less downtime - a week versus a month!

23

These surgeons are perfecting a new technique, dubbed the Deep Plane facelift, which differs from traditional facelift techniques and is said to be ‘ponytail friendly’ (incisions are a third the traditional length and are tucked far behind the ear). The signature procedure of Dr. Jacono, is called MADE (minimal access deep-plane extended) and it involves a deep structural repair of the face, lifting the skin, muscles, and fat pads of the face as a unit, releasing the facial ligaments instead of peeling the skin away from its deep structure which puts tension on the skin and muscle layer of the face called the SMAS.

The face is lifted vertically as opposed to earlier procedures which pulled back toward the ears, pulling at the corners of the mouth. The ‘pulled mouth’ look is a common telltale sign of a facelift and one that typically puts women off. The Deep Plane technique uses a vertical vector and recreates the heart-shaped face of youth.

SAMPLE

The incisions behind the ear allow patients to wear their hair up in a ponytail and are more discreet than previous procedures.

24

In a Meta-analysis looking at 40,000 patient outcomes, the Deep Plane facelift complication rate of facial nerve injury was shown to be the lowest risk of all facelift techniques. This is big news for those wanting to freshen up their skin and avoid fillers, which when overdone, can actually stretch out the face causing it to droop more aggressively and can accelerate the ageing process.

SAMPLE

By expanding the facial tissue, you have to add more with continual use because the face gets looser, which weighs the face down.

As surgery has evolved, so too has people’s relationship to procedures in general. Not only are people still going under the knife, but they’re also doing it younger than ever before.

which is significantly lower than previous decades. The rise of social media may have helped provoke the shift by casting a new and omnipresent spotlight on appearance. Plus, people are living and working longer and wanting to maintain their youthful look and their results are often better compared to those doing a facelift procedure when they are in their sixties.

The average age for a face-lift these days is 47, 25

DO YOU NEED

Dermaplanin IN YOUR LIFE?

W

SAMPLE

e’ve come a long way from the pleasant pampering experience of a facial, where the facial menu is full of complex and lengthy high-tech medical procedures involving lasers, injections and consent forms.

The latest name on the facials list is dermaplaning. The most requested skin treatment in New York spas and clinics right now, it has become the latest addition to our home skincare regimen. Dermaplaning is a form of exfoliation. A sharp tool — not unlike a scalpel — is used to scrape off the top layer of the skin. Even though a sharp blade is involved, the treatment is pain-free and leaves you with virtually no downtime. Think face-shaving

but with either a specifically designed surgical-grade scalpel in the steady hand of a qualified practitioner. No anesthesia, skin lacerations, or the like is involved — not even a nick or cut - as they scrape skin, dead skin cells and all those fine vellus hairs, a fancy name for good old peach fuzz. It is essentially removing the dead upper layer of the epidermis, which is what makes your skin look dull.

naturally highlighted and, without the fuzzy felt finish of baby hairs and layers of dead cells, it reflects every shaft of light. You may have red skin for 24 hours after a clinic treatment, so it isn’t recommended to have this done on the day of an event and it may feel sensitive for three to five days after. Avoid exfoliation, applying retinol, exposing your skin to the sun or having any other skin procedures for five to 10 days post-treatment.

SAMPLE

The results?

After treatment, your skin tone and texture is improved, and skincare products can absorb more easily, you will enjoy smoother make-up application and a glowing dewy finish that lasts long after the skincare has sunk in. Dermaplaning leaves your skin looking super polished, 28

So, is it worth all this? It removes the dead surface cells and facial hair that can trap oils and dirt, leaving the skin ultra-smooth, fresh and glowing. Not only does it help products penetrate and absorb deeper into the skin, but makeup goes on more smoothly afterwards.

Combined with a peel, dermaplaning can lift dry, dead skin, reduce the appearance of pigmentation, and help diminish rosacea and acne scars. Fine lines are softened and the skin texture is left more even. Dermaplaning is suitable for all skin types – if you have active acne, a clinical treatment is better, as you will need professional advice. The real benefit of dermaplaning is that any active products you use

will be better absorbed. Using vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and retinol after your treatment can be particularly effective. In a nutshell, undergoing the monthly treatments in line with the skin’s regeneration cycle is a big ask for softer, more radiant skin, but whenever you have a big event on the horizon, that smooth as silk, ultra glowing base for your makeup makes booking in a no brainer.

FUELING YOUR

Workouts RIGHT

SAMPLE

P

ost-workout shakes have long been considered the most important part of your workout nutrition. Recent research suggests, however, that ingesting protein and amino acids prior to training may be even more beneficial. Hang in there, sister. Here’s why: Although the optimal time to have a protein shake is a hotly debated topic, recent research has shown that the amount of protein and

30

carbohydrate consumed over the course of the day is far more important than the timing of it, with regards to fat loss, building muscle and improving performance. Many people believe drinking a protein shake within 30 minutes of exercise will maximize their results in the gym, however, this 30-minute window, commonly known as the “anabolic window where your muscles are like a sponge for protein, has now been found to be much longer than 30 minutes.

SAMPLE

31

This means we don’t need to scoff that shake or protein bar down on the way to the gym, but can pace our intake out a little less rigidly. A preworkout protein, specifically the branched chain amino acids (BCAAs), will help fuel your muscles during training. BCAAs don’t need to be processed by your liver; after being absorbed, they head directly to your blood stream to be picked up by your muscles. This is key because exercise causes the breakdown and oxidation of BCAAs. Providing BCAAs to working muscles will prevent the need for your body to catabolize the working muscle itself.

The ideal time for a preexercise meal is 2-4 hours before your workout because it’s early enough to digest the food, yet late enough that this energy won’t be used up by the time you begin exercising. For your pre-exercise meal, you need to eat something that helps boost and sustain energy levels, preserve muscle mass, optimise recovery and boost overall performance.

SAMPLE

In terms of pre-exercise nutrition, we talk about the pre-exercise meal (which is three or four hours before a workout) and a pre-exercise snack (within the hour before training).

32

This meal needs to be well balanced and should include: • Whole grain carbohydrates • Lean protein • Some good fat • Fibre in the form of Vegetables or fruit In the hour before your workout, what you eat will depend on your goals. If fat

protein prior to working out increased calorie burning over the subsequent 24 hours. The exact cause of this increase in calorie burning is unknown, but it may be due to the added metabolic effects of increasing protein and modifying substrates (energy sources) used during exercise.

maintain muscle mass during training and reduce markers of muscle damage, therefore aiding recovery. If your body composition is in check and it’s all about enhancing performance, then you need to focus primarily on carbohydrates and fast absorbed protein sources. The issue with eating closer to when you actually exercise is that you need to eat something that is easy to digest. That’s why liquid calories such as shakes and smoothies are recommended.

The nutrients you ingest around your workouts are extremely critical to developing and refining your physique. If you skip pre-workout protein, you skip a chance to support intra-workout anabolism, muscle growth AND reduce post-workout catabolism (muscle breakdown).
