CLIFTON school kids will join the likes of Andy Warhol, Annie Leibovitz and Lucian Freud in exhibiting their work at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Candid community portraits – taken by 22 Farnborough Academy photography students – will hang
alongside the famous faces of William Shakespeare, Virginia Woolf and Queen Elizabeth II at the renowned gallery from October. Before the start of its five-month residency in London, the exhibition will be on display at Nottingham Contemporary until August 31, following its premiere last night. It was the first time the students, including 15-year-old Maiya Howard,
had seen their work in a major exhibition. She said: “It’s really exciting; it’s almost like we are famous because of our photos.” The exhibition is the culmination of a project between the two galleries and school entitled Creative Connections: Nottingham. It is
the first time the scheme has taken place outside London. “After four successful years at the National Portrait Gallery, it is incredibly exciting to be taking Creative Connections to Nottingham,” said National Portrait Gallery director Dr Nicholas Cullinan. “Through this pilot we are seek-

ing to extend the project and build a way of working with different types of museums and galleries nationally.” Students were mentored by London-based artist Katherine Green who taught the group professional photography skills which they then used to capture the spirit of Clifton, shooting portraits at The Hope Centre, Lark Hill Retirement Village, Clifton Market and Central Park.
