Laisenia Koroibuna and villagers of Nawaisomo in the highlands of Naitasiri pull their bilibili with housing materials along the Waicakena River. The villagers had to endure the physical strain and drawbacks of the rough environment because of the village’s inaccessibility.

By SIKELI QOUNADOVU “WE are tired of all the lies and false promises,” said 65-year-old Paula Nabutokere of Nawaisomo Village in the district of Nagonenicolo in Naitasiri. As far as he can remember, ever since Fiji gained independence they were promised a road that would reach their village. Mr Nabutokere claimed their representative to government, who was a member of the Legislative Council in the 1960s, made the first promise of a road to the village. Half a century later, the people of the vanua o Wailevu are still waiting on promises made by politicians elected into power. He claimed six years ago, a tractor from the Ministry of Works arrived and ever since then there has been no other signs of a road to be constructed to the village. “A few weeks back a few officials from the Elections Office were here to register our names, we accommodated them and looked after them,” he claimed. “We always do this to all government officials and any visitor who comes to the village, we provide them the best of everything we have, hoping that in return they will think of us and our need.

“Now that the election is drawing closer we are sure to have them (politicians) visit our village and make that promise yet again that the road will reach us, but for how long will we have to wait, we do not know.” Nawaisomo Village is only accessible via a punt or bilibili ride following the Waicakena River for an hour from the end of the road. It takes three hours to reach the end of the road when travelling from Suva through Vunidawa, Nakorosule and then Waibalavu Village. Fiji Roads Authority’s acting chief executive officer Robert Sen said the FRA was looking for a contractor. “The FRA has sent out a request for tender (RFT) on July 22 to design and build the unsealed road from Nakorosule Village to Nawaisomo Village,” he said. In May this year, The Fiji Times ran a story that the FRA would issue the tender for the road project later the same month. When asked what was the cause of the delay, Mr Sen said the contract was sent out and work would start once the contractor was appointed through the FRA tender and procurement process.
