It’s been a bit hit & miss, weather-wise this summer, but we’re sure to settle everyone down with a truly wonderful season of shows and events this autumn at Reading Arts.
There’s big news from Panto land…Keeping up with the times but with one foot firmly rooted in tradition, this year’s family Panto at The Hexagon will feature a stunning new Digital Set, complete with high-resolution wrap around screens that will immerse you in the magic like never before. You can have a peek at the new set by visiting whatsonreading.com/cinders

The Hexagon’s impressive line-up of top comedians continues into the autumn with … Katherine Ryan, Jimmy Carr, Sarah Millican, Frank Skinner, Ben Elton, Ed Gamble, Fern Brady, Adam Hills and many more.
While at South Street you can catch Edinburgh Comedy Award-Winner Amy Gledhill along with Paul Foot, Harriet Kemsley, Mark Thomas and Tom Stade

South Street will also play host to some wonderful, thought-provoking theatre.
Celebrating Black History Month, Dougie Blaxland’s ‘Our Little Hour’ tells the inspirational story of the legendary hero Walter Tull, in this intensely moving musical drama. And don’t miss the return of Sitelines - Theatre In Unusual Spaces, with intimate, table-top performances of ‘Common Salt’, at Reading Museum.
Classical Music aficionados are set for many a treat as our new season of concerts kicks off in October. Featuring The Hexagon’s resident Orchestra, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with three impressive concerts, plus some of the world’s finest ensembles and soloists will be visiting The Concert Hall at Reading Town Hall. For younger fans, The Royal Philharmonic will return with their ever-popular Noisy Kids concert, which is the perfect, fun-filled, introduction to Classical music.
All these shows coming to Reading Arts and countless more events from over 200 venues and organisations across Reading can be found by visiting whatsonreading.com, which is now celebrating it's 5th anniversary!

As we approach another autumn/winter season, we also approach a key milestone for What’s On Reading –our FIFTH ANNIVERSARY!
Yes, it’s somewhat hard to believe that whatsonreading.com went live in October 2019, changing the face of how the people of (and visitors to) Reading would discover what’s going on in the world of local arts, culture and heritage. And we know from speaking to our Partner organisations that the site has genuinely helped them find new audiences – and vice versa!
We launched with around 60 local venues and organisations listing their events and activities with us. We’ve now more than quadrupled that number in the past half-a-decade. We’ve been through lockdowns and digital revolutions, 900 years of the Abbey, 200 years of biscuits, and thousands of gigs, comedy shows, exhibitions, guided walks, festivals, plays, choral concerts… the list goes on!
And, indeed, the list continues to go on – we’re already looking at a bumper season of events for you as things start to get cold and/or cosy and we go back inside after a spritely summer. September sees the season kick off with classical concerts, some rather interesting tribute shows (a Shrek soundtrack tribute band, anyone?) and the usual recruitment drive for new terms of classes and workshops. October brings with it spooky season, and we’re already seeing a folk-music Samhain celebration and burlesque that goes bump in the night landing on the site! November offers up movie music, cracking comedy and the return of comic-con. And December… well, let’s just say our Christmas list is already looking pretty stuffed (you can find that at whatsonreading.com/christmas-in-reading)
So, plenty to celebrate and plenty more to look forward to, in all corners and all flavours of Reading’s cultural soup. Five years in, and we’re showing no signs of slowing down. Hopefully neither are you.
See you somewhere near the front!

When the curtain comes up on Cinderella, this year’s Hexagon pantomime, audiences will notice something very new: the stage.
For centuries, pantomime has played with traditions, from the way in which the Fairy Godmother enters through to the glorious song and dance finale complete with fancy costumes.
Now, a new tradition is arriving in the form of high-tech digital scenery.
These big screens must be seen to be believed and will enhance the show which is produced by Imagine Theatre and once again stars CBeebies megastar Justin Fletcher and his partner in panto crime, Paul Morse.
Also returning are Hexagon favourites Carl Tracey, once again playing the prince, and Rachel Delooze, who will team up with Rebecca Allingham to be the wicked stepsisters.
Adam Pettigrew returns for his second Hexagon panto to play Dandini and newcomers Samantha Dorrance as Cinderella, Cassandra Lee as the Fairy Godmother and Ally Cox as the Wicked Stepmother complete the main cast. Some of Reading’s most talented youngsters will perform in the ensemble thanks to Imagine Theatre’s open auditions held in July.
Justin has once again written the script, which will be packed with family-friendly humour, great songs and plenty of memorable moments. Because he knows the main cast so well, he is able to tailor it to suit their talents.
He says: “I can’t wait to be back at The Hexagon this Christmas.
Cinderella is one of my favourite pantomimes, and the new digital set will enable us to make it the most magical Christmas show yet. I can’t wait to see you there”.
Paul is looking forward to teaming up with Justin once again, this year playing Nanny Gumdrop –his 11th year of making ‘em laugh.
“Justin and I have worked together for so long he writes with my voice in his head - unfortunately for him!” he laughs.
“He knows what works for us, what works for the audience, and I have no worries at all when I get the script … I know it’s going to be absolutely brilliant.”
Paul can’t wait to return to The Hexagon in time for the festive season. On the new sets, he promises: “It will be mind-blowing. It is going to be spectacular for the audience to see and it really pushes the boundaries of what panto can do.”
He jokes: “I just hope we don’t have to stop
halfway through and press the button to rewind it!”
Cinderella producer and director Steve Boden is very excited about the new technology being used and he can’t wait for people to see it. But why introduce it?
“Panto as an art form has been around for hundreds of years because it evolves, it keeps up to date and it’s not afraid to look at itself and social trends,” he says.
“Clearly technology is a huge part of our world. Over the past decade, it has immeasurably enhanced the way people interact with the arts, with performance, with news, with leisure.
“There are some key moments in the narrative of Cinderella which we can explore in this production that can’t be done in a traditional show, such as Cinderella’s escape from the ball at midnight. We can now travel with her on her return from the palace and see her reaction to the Ball and meeting the Prince.
Paul is happy with the modernisation. “When I started doing panto 410 years ago,” he jokes, “We had real ponies (for the transformation scene) and they would pull the carriage for Cinderella. Then we had the change to mechanical flying carriages, and now we have the digital screen.
“Cinderella is a story about dreams, wishes, aspirations and transformations. With The Hexagon undergoing its own transformation to create the new studio theatre, it’s the right time to put on a digital pantomime.”
He is certain that the digital staging will enhance the feeling of spectacle and magic that only live theatre can bring … along with all the panto favourites such as the ghost scene, the slapstick and the big musical numbers, of course.
“It is going to be completely new, and it will be great to see the reaction to it.
“It’s very much the 21st century pantomime.” He adds: “It’s really going to be spectacular to watch, and something really, really quite special.”
Cinderella is performed at The Hexagon in Reading from Saturday December 7, through to Sunday January 5. For more details, go to: whatsonreading.com/cinders or call the box office on 0118 960 6060.
PHIL CREIGHTON is a freelance journalist based in Reading and has been a massive fan of pantomime ever since he saw a comedy routine based on sweet names when he was still in nappies. Oh yes, he did.
