A CIVIL RIGHTS SEQUENCE
from The Focus- Issue 3
J. RAINFORD
I hate to say it, but it started off at slavery, But now it's going on with the cops' so called bravery. Can’t walk down the streets, once your day is done, Without staring down the barrel of a racist's shotgun.

See a black man, get ready, shoot, FIRE. When his sister tells the story she is branded a liar. Sisters losing brothers, mothers losing sons, Just another name on the list once the deed is done.
When is the murder and the hatred going to stop? When's the time when a cop's knee won't be on top of a black mans neck outside the barbershop. When innocent men won't fall asleep to the sound of POP, POP, POP.
I'm so tired of seeing stories on the news, Another woman dead because the police abuse. Tweets getting dug up so as to justify, despite the innocent man's outcry.
Eric Garner, George Floyd, saying I can't breathe, but the police held him down until he started to wheeze. Mothers, fathers, futures they left behind, Sisters, brothers, friends, what's happening to humankind! We're so lost, so stupid, so petty, Getting pulled over by the protectors, getting sweaty.
Not knowing what to do, how to save your life, America, listen, they're tired with all this strife.
Their voices have got to be heard, Protest, fight, make them hear your words. Not equal now, never were equal, So everyone tune in to the Civil Rights Sequel.
Black Lives Matter, a shameful statement, We shouldn't need to say this, there should be some abatement. America the so called land of the Free; Well it wasn't free for them, victims to an institutional killing spree. But now we rise, now we riot, now we fight: We are in darkness now but I see a light.
A future for our youth, our future stars, Where the government doesn’t just watch, eating caviar. Up on their high stool, forming news hidden bans, More intricate ways to kill a black man.
A future where all lives matter, Not just a phrase from some selfish, white chatter. A truth which needs to be solved , As a modern society, we should have evolved.
Their voices have got to be heard, Protest, fight, make them hear your words. Not equal now, never were equal, So everyone tune in to the Civil Rights Sequel.
