CLUBS DURING LOCKDOWN
from The Focus- Issue 3
A. LABANA
Starting after the Easter holidays, clubs and societies began to transfer to Teams so we could still stay in touch with one another. We have many new clubs, which I personally hope will carry on at school in September. After all, we must stay together if we are to stay safe and sane during this peculiar time. I, like others, were beginning to get bored and needed some extracurricular activities. So in this article, I will explain how the clubs operate and give reasons to join them, if you haven’t already.

How clubs operate During the lockdown, we have been learning online using Microsoft Teams. And now we have clubs on Teams! Most subjects have a club of their own or a club which uses techniques from that subject (e.g. The English Team will send us things to do with the Reading School’s Creative Collective club). They will usually show you what the code is to join them on the information about the club. However, if you’d just like to have a look at a few clubs that you might want to choose from, you can simply click/tap on ‘Browse Teams’, where it will take you to a selection of different club teams you can join.
Why should I join a club?
Joining a club is the ultimate way of making new friends with older students or younger students. But you may be asking why during lockdown? Many people I’ve spoken to have said they are getting really bored at home. That’s not true for everyone, but still it’s a nice way of keeping the spirits up during lockdown. Plus, it keeps people from going insane! So please, I urge you to join at least one or two clubs now, as I can tell you from experience that it is one of the best things going on during lockdown, and it has also allowed me to learn so much because of things that the older students have taught us.
Now, I’d like to end this newsletter with a few quotes from students in 7S, as I think that it might provide some motivation. “I think that clubs during lockdown are a very good idea as they allow people to communicate about the things they like doing and helps keep us entertained.” By Conor Kingston, 7s “Well I think the clubs are really fun and the teachers are doing their best to make them as interesting as possible. I like how that clubs that we used to do in school can be done at home virtually but also the introduction of some new clubs as well.” By Akash Ramesh, 7s
Thank you for reading my newsletter and I hope that you and your family stay safe during this very strange time! Have fun!
