Gallery’s solo exhibit now a virtual experience James Woodfill’s newest work, CODE PRACTICE: Certain Objects and Certain Systems, is ready to be experienced, explored, and manipulated. Visit art.josephneasegallery.com/ woodfill/ to get started. CODE PRACTICE refers generally to the body of sculptural and video works created over the last year by James Woodfill, and was set to be the subject of a solo exhibition at Joseph Nease Gallery starting in the summer of 2020. The novel coronavirus instigated our shift to a virtual web-based platform for an exhibition, and a change of focus to the most recent stop frame animations and sound work: CERTAIN OBJECTS AND CERTAIN SYSTEMS. These individual sketches and explorations, constructed in the spring and early summer, form a kit of parts that are presented here in a portfolio of distinct yet fluid compositions. We encourage
you to explore and compose and play. We will have some of Woodfill’s objects at the gallery in the coming weeks as well. As a reminder, the Joseph Nease Gallery is open by appointment only. Hours are Thursday through Saturday, 12 to 4 pm. Appointments can be made by calling the gallery or by emailing Gallery Manager Amanda Hunter at manager@ josephneasegallery.com. All visitors are to wear masks, and we will be routinely disinfecting common surfaces within the gallery space.
ARTS IN BRIEF
DSSO’s Heaven & Earth concert can be streamed
Heaven & Earth is now available to stream online at DSSO at Home for the next 45 days. DSSO at Home is completely free, just create an account and bring the DSSO into your home.
Listen at dsso.com/athome. The DSSO’s Heaven & Earth concert took place on May 7, 2016, with Respighi’s Church Windows and Orff’s Carmina Burana. Heaven and Earth meet in this combination of 20th century masterworks: Respighi was inspired by four different church windows, and the stories they tell, when writing his colorful work Vetrate di Chiesa. Then experience one of the most beloved choral pieces of all time: Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, describing the serenity of heaven, the earthly delights and suffering of men, as well as the futility of fate.

And, it can be viewed for free on Broadway On Demand (broadwayondemand.unreel. me). Even with the word “kid’s” in the title, this is a piece we all can learn and benefit from. Adapted from the book by Jelani Memory and directed by awardwinning director and Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) artist Khalia Davis, A Kid’s Play About Racism will be brought to life by an entirely Black and BIPOC cast and creative team from across the United States.
