MUSIC You’re not really planning on getting intimate with your valentine in silence, are you? Of course you’re not, thanks to the Music staff’s bonerfide playlist of jams, fit for anyone’s special Valentine’s Day finale.

Things that are sexy: Channing Tatum, Fifty Shades of Grey, mood lighting, salsa dancing, Olivia Munn, Drake songs. Things that aren’t sexy: condoms, birth control, gynecological exams, HIV and STD testing. It’s definitely not sexy to talk about reproductive health, but it’s important to acknowledge its necessity. VDAY: FRIEND(LY) ZONE EDITION NATALIE DURST We’re all familiar with the love-hate relationship people have with Valentine’s Day. To some, it feels as though they’re drowning underneath the lovey-dovey cards and boxes of chocolates. The best way to get back to shore, however, is to swim with the tide, not against it: You don’t need to have that special someone in order to take part in Valentine’s Day and enjoy it. The key to a successful Valentine’s Day is to surround yourself with people you love. This could be anything from inviting some close friends over for dessert and The Notebook (or perhaps something less sappy) or having a game night. If you are interested in a bite to eat, regardless of whether you’re on a date or going with a group of friends, grabbing a bite to eat is never a bad idea. My point is simple: There’s nothing wrong participating in Valentine’s Day, especially if you’re with best friends and loved ones. So, go with the flow: stop drowning in the sappy cards and start enjoying the sweets that Valentine’s Day has to offer.

MURPHY'S On an otherwise ordinary Tuesday night at good ol' Murph's with some pals, a bartender asked us to leave our table so he could set something up called a "Goldfish Racing Tournament." Intrigued, I scratched my ears, making sure a collection of errant vibrations hadn't gone askew in entering them. "Goldfish racing, you say?" Apparently, every Tuesday night now, Murphy's sets up a two-lane watery racetrack at the back and anyone can try their hand at racing the little guys by blowing bubbles furiously through a straw to encourage them tode their way to the end. The whole thing has a quasi-Fight Club vibe to it, and the bar gives away prizes to the top two racers. Yours truly revealed a hidden affinity with the noble fish, coming in a close second. For those who are similarly intrigued, come by and challenge the reigning champs, if you dare.

CRANK

Any movie Jason Statham is in is chock full of crazy stunts and hot action, and the movie Crank is no exception: He plays a professional assassin with some serious enemies. Statham’s character Chev Chelios finds out he has been infected with a virus that will kill him if his heart rate drops too low, and throughout the film takes desperate measures to keep his heart rate up. However, the most shocking was when his heart rate dropped on a busy street in Chinatown with his girlfriend, Eve. The first thing Chelios thinks of is sex, so he begins kissing her in an attempt to get some and stay alive. Eve resists, and they start to cause a scene that looks weirdly rape-y in how aggressive it looks. However, everyone in the crowd just stands around, captivated by the show. Eventually, Eve lets Chev pull his pants down, but he fails to get it up. After changing positions to a mailbox, Chev and Eve start having sex in the middle of the street to a cheering crowd, with school buses and people in plain sight. When he finishes, Chelios kisses her on the cheek, takes a call and runs to handle his other business. –Anisa McClinton

HOWARD THE DUCK

There are not many movies that I wish I had never seen, but Howard the Duck is one of them, in no small part because of its overtly sexual nature. For a family movie, it had all sorts of weird sexual humor: Howard reads an issue of Playduck magazine, keeps a tiny duck condom in his wallet and tries to sink his bill into a large African-American woman’s buttocks. There are even some duck breasts on display when he goes crashing through a bathroom—why would a duck have human breasts? But the scene that takes

the cake is the almost-sex scene between Howard the duck and human Lea Thompson. The zoophilia is on full display when a scantily clad Thompson starts to put the moves on Howard, who thankfully stops her. And with my current knowledge of a ducks sexual anatomy (thanks, Imgur). it’s definitely better the producers decided to not go with a full-on sex scene with an oversized duck. But the what makes the scene so disturbing is that it’s not really going for laughs. Rather, the whole thing is played as a tender moment, and that is what makes it so strange. –Brett Herrmann

That's a big picture of a hand reaching out of a vagina... who wants to see that?

6LPSO\ *RRG &2))(( GONE GIRL

One of the creepiest sex scenes of recent memory is the one between Rosamund Pike and Neil Patrick Harris in Gone Girl. The events in the film leading up to the bedroom encounter already position it as an uncomfortable one, so by the time Amy (Pike) and Desi Collins (Harris) are dancing in the sheets, you’re biting your nails in anticipation. Movie fanatics are aware by now that director David Fincher specializes in the twisted, e.g. the scene involving Lisbeth Salander, a sexual harasser, and a sharp rod in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Readers of the book may not be shocked by what happens between Amy and Desi, but rather by David Fincher’s unrelenting direction and the graphic imagery. Amy slits her former stalker’s throat with a letter opener while he’s on top of her, and audiences are not spared any of the details as blood spews all over her naked body, a scene that provoked a collective gasp of horror from both crowds I watched the film with. It’s all kinds of wrong, disgusting and horrific but will leave fans of the dark source material mesmerized and giddy nonetheless. –David Robertson

Pretty much every scene in this cult horror film directed by Takashi Miike is dripping with disturbing sexual oddities, from an elderly Yakuza don who can only orgasm when a spoon is shoved up his rectum to a hotel owner who regularly serves patrons her breastmilk. The plot follows Yakuza thug Minami, who is forced by his boss to kill his brother Ozaki. Later in the film, Minami stumbles upon an immensely attractive woman, desperate to have sex with him, who claims she is Ozaki in female form. Though Minami weakly refuses at first, this creepy Oedipal coupling inevitably occurs in a hotel room and, as Minami slides his manhood in, he finds himself stuck inside. In an abrupt tonal shift from creepily sensual to utterly horrific, Minami scrambles around the room, desperately trying to extricate himself from this demon vagina before being sucked in completely, his hand the last to go as it claws desperately at the floorboards before being swallowed whole. –Ash Valentine

VALENTINE’S

Day: an infamously romantic holiday that typically increases February rose sales within the United States by $224 million. If you are one of the lucky few in a successful relationship, I congratulate you (and wish to warn you that as of 2013, six million individuals were either creating or expecting a marriage proposal on Valentine’s Day). If you are of the single variety and have resigned to spending this holiday with massive amounts of takeout and a dead cell phone—a respectable attempt to avoid incessant calls from relatives attempting to set you up—I advise you to think again. In honor of the infamous holiday, CU’s very

6 buzz February 13-19, 2015

own Carnivale Debauche will be performing yet another original show, “Va Va Valentease.” For those who are unfamiliar, Carnivale Debauche is a Vaudeville and Burlesque troupe that performs in well-known locations throughout the community. The company is partial to bars, which provide an expectedly raunchy atmosphere for an art form known for its suggestive tone. Such locations have previously included C-Street, The Highdive and The Canopy Club. Furthermore, the troupe is quite expansive and often collaborates with other businesses in town; this upcoming production will include music and talent from the band Bruiser (based in St. Louis) and Illini Pole Fitness. Other per-

formers come from various circles and include both members of the community and University students. Although the birth of the burlesque company took place a little less than five years ago, members have remained immensely loyal and many of the original performers continue to work with the troupe. This lengthy period of continuous collaboration has facilitated a familial atmosphere for the performers to work in. This admirable aspect of the troupe is further depicted through its creative process in creating a show. During an interview, Jamie Hines, co-director of the company along with Whitney Havice, stressed the collaborative nature of the cast

and crew. Although Ms. Hines and Ms. Havice are responsible for creating the initial concept for a show, the entire troupe adds their own touch through costumes (Nadja Robot), choreographing their own solo routines, stage decoration (Chelsea Shaffer) and emcee routines (Mikel Matthews). In addition, the co-directors partake in the show: Whitney as a choreographer and Jamie as a dancer. By participating in the production, the two co-directors prevent the enactment of any status-driven social barriers which could impact the performance and security of the troupe. According to Ms. Hines, the company has also undergone an extraordinary evolution

"They're too young to be having sex, just like I'm too old to be having sex"

throughout its years of experience. It allows audience members to experience Burlesque and Vaudeville practices from various time periods, essentially preserving and honoring a bit of performance art history. Yard Dog Roadshow, the Holy Grail of all risqué entertainment, has always had a strong influence on the troupe. This is understandably so, given Yard Dog Roadshow’s popularity and similar inclusion of Vaudeville and Burlesque performances. This far-reaching variety of influences, along with the creative minds at work within the troupe, merge to create fantastic shows that earn rave reviews. According to Ms. Hines, one of her personal favorites is “A Carnie’s Life for Me” due to the fact “that it featured all original music from… (the) band at the time.” As it is already an incredible feat to script an entire show, the ability to provide original music and create corresponding sets requires an inordinate amount of work and love for one’s craft. Given that this is the process that the cast and crew

typically undertakes, it is guaranteed that any show performed by Carnivale Debauche will be worth a great deal more than its monetary value (a rarity in today’s society, where “good enough” seems to be the top of the mountain for many). The current performers within the troupe include: Turbo, Rebel Raspberry, Bellatrix Vane, Mad Dog, Drusilla Delacroix, Bettie Leigh, Carnie Barker Steve, Norm Andie, Virgil Viper and Jeto Gingersnaps. These names are not the performers’ given names, and their fictional backgrounds are even more startling. Turbo’s history, as her name would suggest, is quite turbulent. She has graced our world after her home planet was destroyed. Virgil Viper, on the other hand, is not a complete stranger to this world. He—in an easily relatable story—is a circus veteran with a passion for trained snakes. Perhaps the most interesting member of this crew of controversial characters is Norm Andie. Norm Andie, like Viper, is a circus veteran, but not by

choice. Their foolish father to never have The Carnivale Debauche troupe. Photo seems by Mary Roffers

heard the tale of Rumpelstiltskin and promised Norm Andie to a circus. However, Andie soon fled the circus and found a home with the wonderful troupe we have in Champaign-Urbana: Carnivale Debauche. Given the intricate nature of these character’s back-stories alone, it is clear that the live performances of shows will be quite engaging and detail-oriented. These entertaining, painstakingly crafted performances have led the troupe to have many sold out shows, along with exceedingly positive reviews. Given its popularity as an established Vaudeville and Burlesque troupe in CU, it seems only fitting to take the time to honor them and treat yourself to a sexy, vibrant and interesting performance this Valentine’s Day at The Highdive! We expect to see you there, sans takeout and cell phone. Catch Carnivale Debauche’s “Va Va Valentease” on Feb. 14 at The HighDive. February 13-19, 2015 buzz 7

THE INTIMATE TRUTH

<RJD FDQ DIIHFW \RXU LQWLPDWH VLGH WKLV 9DOHQWLQH·V 'D\ CARLY GUBBINS

Used with permission by Reflect Yoga Therapy.

“IT’S PHYSICAL,

psychological, emotional… All of the elements that yoga can bring out in a person can benefit you in an intimate relationship.” I met Jodi Adams back in December when I wrote about her and fellow co-owners’ yoga studio, Reflect Yoga Therapy. She had said that it’s not what you do on the mat; it’s how you take the practice off the mat and into your life. This mantra is one that still rings true for her. To be frank, yoga can benefit your sex life. And not just in the physical way that yoga can improve flexibility and strength but rather from a “strong foundation of self,” as Adams said. When people are able to tap into their sense of selves, “the intimacy of that is beyond anything we can put into words. It’s a beautiful connection, and I think people look for that when they’re looking for a relationship,” Adams said. “I think, too, that’s why there are people who go from relationship to relationship because

8 buzz February 13-19, 2015

they’re looking for a connection. But it doesn’t come from the outside. It comes from within.” I don’t think it’s a big secret that confidence is key for truly rewarding sexual intimacy, and yoga is a way to uncover or enhance that. Adams explains the evolution of this confidence: “Maybe, at first, (coming to yoga) is physical for a lot of people. You want that better body, and that builds confidence, and so you are able to be (freer) in your intimate relationships with people. Once you know what you really want, you’re able ask for that, and I think a lot people in intimate relationships can be timid of that. So there’s a beauty when you can be very confident and yet find a place where you can really surrender and have a place of safety. I think we all want to be seen—really, truly seen, but it takes a certain amount of bravery to show that part of yourself. That really tender place can be really delicate. There are a lot of wounds there, maybe, and to really open up and show that to

someone else takes a lot of guts. For me, yoga is a really fierce practice and it helps me check into that place in myself and honor all of it.” Adams speaks from extensive experience, teaching yoga at Reflect Yoga Therapy, Living Yoga Center in Champaign, the Anita Purves Nature Center in Urbana and Allen Hall at the University. “As a teacher, I’ve seen people learn how to live in their bodies—really inhabit their physical selves. Yoga helps you really inhabit that in very intimate way. You have to have that in order, I think, to be a good partner in a physical way. If you don’t know what pleases you and how to receive pleasure—be intimate with yourself—I don’t know how you can truly be a good partner to someone else.” Adams works hard to make people realize how accessible yoga is, but realizes the gendered perceptions that some may have about the practice. “Unfortunately, in this society, I don’t think men have been given many opportunities to really live from that place—that vulnerable place, (and being)

emotionally intelligent in their own bodies, and I think yoga gives them that tool to tap into that.” In fact, Adams said that this 5,000-yearold practice was developed by men for men. “Women weren’t even allowed to practice yoga,” she said. It wasn’t until yoga came to the West that women primarily adopted it. As for Adams’ insight to a more female perspective, she said, “In society right now, there’s this pressure for women to look a certain way, to act a certain way, to have a certain body type. And if we’re not achieving that, then we’re not sexy, we’re not desirable but, once again, I think yoga can really break down those barriers so you can truly inhabit your body.” According to Adams, your practice can redefine the blanket statement of “perfect body.” Adams believes yoga allows you “feel desirable and feel sexy and feel a connection to yourself, and that’s just palatable. People want to be around someone like that.”

YOGA POSES TO INCREASE SEXUAL INTIMACY

Cobbler’s Pose

(Sanskrit: Baddha Konasana) • Souls of the feet come together and knees spay out • Opens up muscles in pelvic floor • Strengthen pelvic muscles (aka mula bandha in yoga) • Strengthening from the inside out

Wide-legged, Seated Forward Fold (Sanskrit: Upavistha Konasana):

• Opens up and increases circulation in the muscles in the pelvic floor

• Impacts bladder, reproduction, orgasms and intestines

• Opposite of standard sitting position that restricts blood flow in the pelvic floor

• Good for both men and women

• Also good for men and women

*Adams said that participants can feel the effects of these practices immediately. “I always say in my class, ‘Let your body guide,’ and the more you do that, the more you can check in with your physical self, and

doesn’t that impact you in a very intimate way with your partner? Adams is teaching a Pre-Valentine’s Happy Hour class from 5:45-6:45 p.m. today at Reflect Yoga Therapy, located at 324 Neil St.

in Champaign. This “Heart and Hip Opener session is open to all-levels with a $20 drop-in fee or those enrolled in the unlimited Community Yoga program. No partner work is required.

“You can’t respect others without respecting yourself, and that’s a big part of the practice, Adams said. “That’s also a big part of having a connection with somebody, truly.

VALENTINE’S DINING DO’S AND DON’TS $YRLG JHWWLQJ ORYH VWDUYHG RQ WKH ELJ GD\ ZLWK WKHVH HVVHQWLDO WLSV F&D STAFF

Stylish dining at Sakanaya Restaurant. Champaign, IL. Photo by Diana Diggs.

VALENTINE’S

Day dinner is like the Wrestlemania of romantic meals. After 364 days of sparring and practice over a variety of place settings and tablecloths, the main event arrives. The two enter with all their pageantry and pomp, arms lock, champagne glasses clatter, maybe there’s even some sweating. Pensive waiters and waitresses try to mediate without taking an angry look or venomous barb themselves. The stakes are high, and the steaks are high-priced. The last hours are counting down until the bell rings, but the Food & Drink staff is in your corner with tips that will have you walking out of dinner tomorrow night with your head held high. DO take her on a food tour: If your date has an appetite for adventure, impress her with a taste of some of the best downtown Champaign has to offer. The goal: to try a little of everything in a lot of places. Start the evening with a sampling of sushi at KoFusion before heading to Wedge Tequila Bar & Grill for $3 tacos and special Valentine’s Day drinks, including a chocolate margarita. Next, visit Seven Saints for a bite to eat (and maybe more drinks). Check out the bar’s slid-

10 buzz February 13-19, 2015

er menu, with fourteen options ranging from Classic to California Turkey. Finally, enjoy the array of tapas at Radio Maria—perhaps an artisanal cheese plate or fresh-baked breads and spreads—before topping off the night with dessert and French press coffee at Cream & Flutter. For February, the bakery’s cupcake specials are dark chocolate salted caramel and dark chocolate strawberry. –Madeline Decker DON’T go for exotic cuisine: Unless you both have seasoned spice palates and don’t mind gas, the last thing you want on Valentine’s Day is to feel like you’re in a balmy sweat lodge and about to shit your pants. End up in the bed not the toilet, people. Keep it simple, keep it safe. –Amirah Zaveri DO take her to Biaggi’s: Rather than attempting to cook some elaborate meal and inevitably failing, why not save yourself the time and embarassment? Impress your girl with as fancy of a meal as you can get in CU at Biaggi’s. Now that she’s thrilled that she has a guy that knows how to choose a good restaurant, romance her further by sharing a dessert for two and top it off with a glass of wine. She’ll realize you’re a keeper if she hasn’t already, and you’ll have made minimal effort. –Leila Shinn

DON’T over think it! Valentine’s puts heavy pressure on both sides and may leave some frantically trying to do something at the last second, so don’t be afraid to be simple. A little reminder throughout the day can do a whole lot. So, first thing: brunch. It takes care of breakfast and leaves no room for lunch. The Courier Café in Urbana is the place to pick and a vintage spot known for its breakfast. Their Pancakes and French toast are perfect for a sweet tooth while something hardy like their biscuits and gravy makes sure there’s something that either partner will enjoy. It’s not too elegant, and it’s not the McCafe, so it works for first time Valentiners or long-time love birds. Most likely, you’ll be too full to want to do anything else and, if it’s brunch, a nap is likely to occur (at least for me) or #CuddleWithBae. However you spend that time, it’s the perfect moment to exchange your homemade cards and flowers (save the chocolate covered strawberries for later). Again keeping it simple: dinner. If you can’t make dinner yourself (which would be a bonus), then taking her out is the other option. Depending on your partner, you can go light or heavy like taking her to Escobar’s or Black Dog. High-energy and good spirits is all that’s needed to end the night.

Of course, the rest can be left to the both of you when you get home. –Mari Lopez DO be thoughtful: Clearly, you picked this person to be your Valentine for a reason. Show this person that they aren’t just a last resort because the other person they asked said no. First, pick your date up from their home. People always want to meet up nowadays, but show your date that that’s one of the little things you don’t take for granted. You don’t have to take your date to the fanciest places in Champaign, but take them somewhere nice. I would recommend some of the nicer downtown restaurants such as KoFusion, which is always good if you and your date are sushi lovers and DESTIHL. But, if you’re a couple years shy of enjoying the downtown scene, one thing I will say is get away from our hectic campus, especially since Valentine’s Day is a Saturday night. –Monique Archer DON’T be afraid to stick around campus this V Day. Places like Maize, Layalina Mediterranean Grill, Pho Cafe and Flat Top Grill offer great alternatives if you don’t have a car or a ton of money to spend on your date this year. After your campus dinner, you could always get dessert at Insomnia Cookies for fresh baked goodies and ice cream. Continue reading at www.readbuzz.com

a band, romantic relationships can make things complicated; they can make or break the musical bond that glues everyone together. Fortunately for Elizabeth Majerus and Matt Mitchell of local rock trio Motes, this has never been an issue. Majerus and Mitchell’s friendship and romance budded into a strong, solid bond well before the formation of the band in 2011. There is a distinct connection between the relaxed nature of the band and Majerus and Mitchell’s marriage. Motes is known for creating rich, soft music that swirls and develops into great rock ‘n’ roll. From the beginning of their relationship as good friends, the two got to know each other and took their time in progressing into a deeper connection. “We hung out together a lot, listening to records and going to shows and talking about music and books, and sometimes playing acoustic guitar together, and gradually that friendship grew into something more, Mitchell said. Early on, both musicians knew that their relationship meant a lot to each other. “At first, I was actually a bit skittish about Matt being my boyfriend because he was such a good friend, and I didn’t want to mess that up, Majures said. “Obviously, it worked out, though. With the two artists being as casual and laidback as their music, it’s not surprising they got married in a similar fashion. Nontraditional and relaxed, the couple made the decision without a big, fancy proposal and a diamond ring.

“We were on our way from Sheboygan (Wisc.) to Milwaukee, where we had plans to visit a guitar shop we’d heard good things about because I was in the market for a new electric guitar, Majerus said. “I was driving, and I quite spontaneously said, ‘We should get married.’ Mitchell responded in a similar fashion: “Really? Cool. Majerus joked that instead of getting an engagement ring that day, she got an “engagement guitar. Just like that, Majerus and Mitchell sealed the deal and got married, throwing a party for friends and family to celebrate the union. Not much changed in the way they made their music together, and it actually seems to contribute to Motes’ success. Being in a marriage takes a lot of work and communication to begin with, while bands and the relationships between its members function in a similar way. “We’re used to collaborating on all kinds of things together, Mitchell said. “When you have a mortgage and a house and you’re in charge of the welfare of two children, negotiating the logistics of mixing a record or sequencing the tracks or figuring out a bass part are pretty easy stuff. We know how to talk about touchy stuff together, so we’re in familiar territory in those band-related conversations. Communication and honesty are key to the band. From early on, when Majerus and Mitchell had their own separate gigs, Majerus con-

fessed that her future husband’s opinion and advice meant a lot to her.

Majerus said. “His opinion mattered to me from a very early stage.â€? Now that the two are in a band together, they constantly talk about their music and vision for Motes. Sharing music, talking about music and playing music have always been a huge interest for both of them. Now they just do it together. Drummer Matt Cohn is the third member of Motes. Before converging in 2011, Cohn was Mitchell’s student and said he respected Mitch-

ell in the classroom and also as a musician. At the time, Mitchell played in Champaign indie rock band Rectangle. Not long afterward, Cohn met Majerus, and the three decided to make music together. One may think that there would be some awkward moments that occur when two of the band members are married, but Cohn said that Majerus and Mitchell’s marriage has never really been an issue. “Motes takes a truly collective songwriting approach, Cohn said. “I don’t ever feel that their relationship precedes any musical decisions—like it has to be a certain way because they decided on it as a couple. Matt and Elizabeth have definitely served as my mentors over the years, and it’s been excellent making music with them after these years of friendship. Of course, I’m constantly amazed they can pull off the rock ‘n’ roll thing while balancing a household, but I think all of that gives our music its warmth. For Motes, that truly is the case. The band’s next project, a full-length LP entitled Keep It in the Dark, shows how Motes has become tighter and more polished than ever. The open communication and friendship all three members possess has a ripple effect with their music. “These songs are generally better all around, and we’ve put more time and care into developing them and letting them evolve, playing them live, Mitchell said. Their latest single “Freeway showcases that growth and dimension. One thing that’s easy to see: Motes are all about the love. February 13-19, 2015 buzz 11
