Dear Fr iends,

It is with great excitement we share our 2021-2022 annual report with you and our network of supporters. The past year was truly remarkable as we returned to fully in person programming. It was heartening to see our Scholars, families, and partner schools back in action with robust learning and out of classroom activities.

We continue to make a significant impact not only in Fairfield County, Westchester County, and The Bronx; but worldwide through the success of our program Alumni who take their talents to the various corners of the world to continue their impact.

As we reflect on the individual and collective journey each Scholar takes, the true constant is the solid future we are ensuring for our Scholars and their families. We are proud of the progress we have made, and excited to grow opportunities for career development, internships, and full-time employment offers. At REACH Prep, we are disrupting cycles of intergenerational poverty to ensure the trajectory of entire communities will be permanently altered for the best.

In the pages of this annual report, you will find more examples of progress and exciting news for the future. You will meet the scholars and families who make who we are come to life. We dream of an equitable future for our communities past and present.

We appreciate you being part of our journey and standing alongside us as we champion the future. Thank you to our generous Board of Directors and Associate Board for their stewardship and dedication to our mission. We also extend a debt of gratitude to the REACH Prep staff and faculty for their tireless work with and on behalf of our scholars. With your partnership, we will continue to make significant forward progress to empower more youth to capitalize on their potential and make their dreams a reality!

With gratitude,

1

REACH Prep Scholars hit the ground running!

LEAH ATTAI

COHORT 18

GREENS FARMS ACADEMY 2019

GETTYSBURG COLLEGE CLASS OF 2023

INCOMING SOFTWARE ENGINEER, GOOGLE

" IT'S BECAUSE OF REACH PREP that I’ve done so many cool things and pursued my passions. My first interest in computing came from the robotics club at GFA, and I wouldn’t have been at that school without REACH Prep. Both of my older brothers also went through REACH Prep, so most of my life I’ve had and built relationships with the wonderful people at REACH Prep. I’m most grateful for their support because everything that’s come from them has been incredible. They also gave me the opportunity to participate in Girls Who Code, and that summer session in 2017 was integral to figuring out my interests. I have spent two summers interning at Google, and next Fall I start there full-time as an L2 software engineer. I’m also hoping to continue my studies down the road, and maybe get a master’s degree in something more education focused. The career readiness workshops that REACH Prep has led for older Scholars such as Money Sense and Future Planning, along with hosting sessions to take headshots for LinkedIn, have made planning for the future much more manageable!"

TAFT 2019

BOWDOIN COLLEGE CLASS OF 2023

INCOMING BANK MANAGER PROGRAM, M&T BANK

FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL, through college applications and resume workshops, REACH Prep has played a part in every step of my educational process. The summer classes in Prep Academy were academically challenging, and on top of my own schoolwork, prepared me for a rigorous boarding school. When applying for high school and college, REACH Prep provided the opportunity for me to participate in test prep which was extremely helpful, and something I wouldn’t have known about or been able to complete without their support. As I enter the world of finance and start the path to being a retail bank manager after graduation, I think of the role REACH Prep played in providing interview preparation and teaching us how to make meaningful connections and foster those relationships."

JUAN VALEZ

COHORT 16 ST. LUKE’S SCHOOL 2017 PROVIDENCE COLLEGE: BACHELOR’S 2021, MASTER’S 2022 INSTITUTIONAL SALES & TRADING ANALYST, COWEN DIGITAL LLC

" DURING MY TIME at Providence College, REACH Prep consistently checked in on me and provided networking opportunities to learn from other young professionals about their post-college endeavors. After graduating with my MBA, I accepted a full-time offer to work for Cowen Digital LLC. While my official title is “Institutional Sales & Trading Analyst,” I also work closely with the sales and research efforts of our growing business. I believe my ability to be so adaptable in the workplace is rooted in the core values instilled in me at Prep Academy where we were challenged and then commended for our growth and ability to tackle any challenge in our way. Not only did REACH Prep support us as students, but the program also fostered an environment where we were encouraged to step out of our comfort zones to expand on our life experiences."

INTERLOCHEN ARTS ACADEMY 2013

BOSTON UNIVERSITY CLASS OF 2018

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF DIVERSITY RECRUITING, YALE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT

" REACH PREP WAS MY INTRODUCTION TO admissions as a concept. My acceptance to REACH Prep and then my independent school were the first admissions processes I ever went through. At Boston University, I applied for a competitive summer job in admissions. I got the job and really enjoyed my experience and was able to extend it through the school year when I served as a Student Admissions Representative. In my current position, I work with two programs at the Yale School of Management, the MBA, and the Master’s in Asset Management. My specific focus is on diversity and inclusion within the admissions team, and I am passionate about making the admissions process less daunting to BIPOC/first-generation audiences. I think that applications can oftentimes seem like an overwhelming task, and I enjoy being able to break down prompts, offer advice, and really serve as a resource for anyone that needs it."

SPOTLIGHT ON SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES

REACH PREP BELIEVES

DEEPLY in the importance of meaningful summer experiences and strongly encourages all students to participate in academic, leadership, internship, and/or outdoor adventure programs. We continue strengthening this facet of our programming by adding new partnerships and nurturing current ones. Our assistance is vital as many families cannot afford these opportunities without support. By providing these experiences for our students to explore and expand their perspectives, cultivate new relationships, and take positive risks, we inspire them to investigate new interests and engage with the world around them.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

In middle school, most summer opportunities involve residential summer camp. This is a chance for students to practice independence while experiencing their first time away from home. Our camp partnerships are in Connecticut, New York, and Maine, although others will attend camps through the John Austin Cheley Foundation as far away as Colorado or Washington. Other middle schoolers may spend a week at a nearby liberal arts college, reading and discussing literature through the Great Books program.

HIGH SCHOOL

When students enter eighth and ninth grades, they become eligible for more academic experiences. Throughout high school, students apply for summer programs at universities that offer enrichment or pre-college programs. We send students to study art and architecture, finance, and engineering. Many Scholars choose to explore study abroad courses. These summer opportunities allow students to live in a dorm, take college courses, and immerse themselves in a specialized topic.

COLLEGE

By the time students are in college, the focus of summer opportunities shifts to internships and career readiness. Students apply for competitive paid internships, and REACH Prep prepares them by providing resume and interview preparation. We encourage students to apply for jobs or internships in the summer to establish their career interests and gain job experience. Our Scholars explore opportunities in fields including finance, engineering, healthcare, and more, and many receive job offers prior to college graduation as a result.

THANK YOU GINA!

Gina Lucas served REACH Prep for eight years with unwavering dedication to students and families.

Under Gina's leadership, REACH Prep expanded its depth and breadth of services offered to students. She led the organization through its 25th anniversary, and was instrumental in establishing a legacy fund, ensuring the sustainability of REACH Prep programming for years to come. During her tenure, REACH Prep expanded it’s independent school partnerships, as well as wrap around services, such as Summer Programming partners.

Gina's passion for REACH Prep’s mission was evident every day. She led the organization with strategic vision and professionalism, and also with a deep understanding of the needs of our families. Gina enjoyed most the moments she got to interact with our students, families, and Alumni, and she put care into these relationships.

REACH Prep expresses it’s gratitude to Gina Lucas, for her service to REACH Prep as Chief Executive Officer from 2015 – 2022.
