Although the Conservatives in the USA had some of their way through President Trump during his presidency, in particular the appointment of three pro-life Chief Justices to the SCOTUS; and the overturning of the Roe versus Wade Bill, USA is still a long way from what it used to be. Many parts of the USA appear more like a Third World nation and these are not movie sets. Politicians’ mantras are not about the value of life but saving the planet. Again, US Americans hoping for the Democratic or the Republican Party to turn the fortunes of their nation around will be simply disappointed.

In the 2019 Federal Election, the Liberal-National Coalition was returned to Government. That moment was a miracle to many true Conservatives. There was great jubilation, and why not with Scott Morrison, a Christian as the Prime Minister? Better still, the Coalition won with a net increase of one Seat over the 2016 election result. Many believed the many bad Laws could now be overturned. But this was not to be. Instead, things got grim over time. Even the promised Religious Discrimination Bill, a bill that religious organisations hoped would protect their practices could not pass in the dying days of that Government.

1 Samuel 8:4-7 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.” But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel prayed to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.
There is no hope, if the Church takes the “apolitical” stance of seemingly being neutral. This is a utopian belief. By not taking sides, we had already sided. Politics have now encroached upon the Church. The fundamentals of human rights are facing a frontal attack on the Freedom of Religion, Speech, Thoughts and Association. Parents’ authority over their children is being removed with the education curricula revised to teach ideologies. Yet the majority of parents choose to keep political views private when politicians are passionately proselyting for the minds of our young. We are witnessing higher incidences of mental health issues amongst our young. Why? More medicine shall not fix the root cause when schools propagate the numerous genders to our primary-aged children as compared to the two biological sex. This is likening to the re-definition of the Periodic Table. A contagion is also rapidly exacerbating our daily problem.
Matthew 12:30 He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.
Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.
Is there hope in politics? No, if we merely hope for a Christian PM to lead the country towards triumph. No, if we look for a charismatic or a celebrity to be the next leader as we have witnessed this in our times. When a nation turns away from God and adopts humanistic models for governance, it is the beginning of the end. It is righteousness that exalts a nation. When time-tested principles that underpin national prosperity are eliminated from culture, and replaced by narratives that redefine humanity, we have not learned from history. Politicians need to represent their constituents and not yield to the high decibels of some fringe groups or echo the shouts of vogue beliefs.
To win a battle, you need to know the Objective, have the right Strategy, and use the correct Tactic. God’s Objective to win the world is through the Great Commission. The Strategy to use is The Gospel, and the Tactic is to use The Church. The love of God must be translated into making saints into disciples, and to reproduce after their own kind.

Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Is there room for politics and The Church? Yes. The Church has to despatch trained believers to reclaim every sphere of society as salt and light. The Church must be the Officer Training School encouraging practitioners to take leadership at all levels of life and especially politics.
2022Spring/Reach 6
Inwisely.awar, the battle goes down to mopping house to house, and when all resistance is stopped, then one side claims victory. In the same way The Church needs to reach every home for Jesus. Strong families make strong churches, strong churches make strong communities, strong communities make strong nations. To win the election, we need to do so by first touching the lives of every Aussie’s heart to return to God. It is the Christian spirit that causes the nation to thrive but a Christian nation that carries the people cannot survive. The love of God must be proclaimed, with The Church represented out in the communities with grace, mercy and sacrifice.
Is there hope in politics? Yes, but it starts with The Church being the Church where Christ is glorified. Until and unless the conviction that Jesus is The Way, The Truth, and The Life is beating not only in the head but in the heart of The Church, politics shall succumb. Christians need to know how to vote with the Truth as the yardstick. Jesus interacted with those in government of the day; from the lawyers, religious groups and the Romans. He went from cities to villages proclaiming the Good News. People repented of their sins, and were renewed in their intellect. A changed worldview ushered in transformation. In the same way, the Church should disseminate Truth to guide the nation to vote
The Church must also awake to be uncompromising, recognise the false doctrines displacing truth, and saints must be equipped to fight and win this Culture War for it takes no prisoners even if you surrender. Further, the Church needs to call for the saints to pray over righteous political candidates and also support them in the field. Reclaim your position, for every life matters. Arise, go and make a difference! Knock on doors, host tea parties, conduct Bible Studies, start activist cells, man polling booths, be voting scrutineers, and do what God calls you to do for His Kingdom. The Government or the Church is imperfect; nonetheless, the Church must be the balance to Government.

Titus 1:9-11 holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict. For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain.
Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
2 Timothy 2:8-10 Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel, for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
2 Timothy 2:1-3 You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
How do we run the race of endurance when all odds are against us? In the Book of 2 Timothy 2:1-13 (NKJV), Paul mentioned the word “endure” three times. From this passage, there are three aspects of endurance.

Running the race of endurance

Firstly, hardship?receiving and appreciating the grace of God enables us to endure hardship. We need God’s grace to go through trials and travails of life.
Secondly, when we go through hardship, it is harder to extend grace to others. At the end of 2 Timothy 1, Paul talked about being deserted by others except Onesiphorus (2 Timothy 1:15-18). This follows immediately by 2 Timothy 2:1 You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. When we are hurt by others, it is natural to harbour bitterness, but the Bible teaches us to be graceful in this circumstance. Harbouring bitterness will only weigh us down, preventing us from running the race of endurance.
Before Paul asked Timothy to endure hardship (v3), he asked Timothy to be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus (v1). What does grace have to do with enduring
Recently, I read the story of the Tanzanian marathon runner, John Stephen Akhwari, who participated at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico city and finished last. He fell half way through the race and badly injured himself, dislocating his knee and hit his shoulder. He, however, finished the race in 3 hours and 25 minutes, over one hour after the winner reached the finishing line. Out of the 75 competitors, only 57 completed the race. When interviewed later and asked why he continued to run, Akhwari replied, “My country did not send me 5,000 miles to start the race. They sent me here to finish the race.”

When we look back at the history, the gospel would not have passed on from generations to generations if Christians could not endure trials and temptations, pains and persecutions. Jesus’ ability to go through sufferings and crucifixion set an example for us to emulate and to endure.

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.
taught us that running the race of endurance is never meant to be about us – not about our ability to endure, not how it might benefit us or bring us success in this life. Running the race of endurance starts with the Grace of Jesus Christ, which equips us. Running the race of endurance involves bearing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with us, for the benefits of others. Running the race of endurance reveals the Glory of Jesus Christ, for the world to see. The world needs 5G to run the internet efficiently; we only need 3G to run the race with endurance.

The third time Paul mentioned the word “endure”, he gave the assurance that if we endure, we shall also reign with Jesus Christ (v12), he assured us of the glory that will come by running the race of endurance. This glory is also promised in other bible

Paulpassages:
The questions we need to ask ourselves: how are we running this race of endurance at this point of our life? Do we have the grace of God to keep us going? Do we run with the purpose centred on the gospel? Do we see the bigger picture of the future glory, rather than the present perishable achievements? Does our life reflect the grace of God, represent the gospel of Jesus Christ, and reach for the glory of heaven? When we do, we will surely experience the joy of running this race of endurance.
2 Timothy 2:11-12 This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. If we endure, we shall also reign with Him
Romans 8:16-17 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs – heirs of God and joint hers with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
Matthew 19:28 So Jesus said to them, “Assuredly I say to you, that in the generation, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
The second time Paul mentioned the word “endure”, he reminded Timothy of the gospel of Jesus Christ (v8). Paul also gave the reason he endured all things – for the sake of the elect, that they may obtain the salvation (v10). Paul was able to endure all things because his focus was on the gospel of Jesus Christ.

In Proverbs 17:22 “A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.” It is good to laugh when we read or hear or tell a joke. In fact, many jokes are not only for a good laugh, there are often lessons to be learnt from them. Here, we have selected a few jokes for you, and the lessons you should learn from them.
Lesson: Know the fact before you act! Do not overlook the purpose of your deed!
Something for a laugh... and a lesson to be learnt
Dr: No, but the thought of long life will never come.
Man: Will it help?
After marriage, he’ll fall asleep before you finish.
Lesson: If you suffer from insomnia, consider getting married.
Man: Is there any way for long life?
A pastor is walking down the street one day when he notices a very small boy trying to press a doorbell on a house across the street. However, the boy is very small and the doorbell is too high for him to reach. After watching the boy’s efforts for some time, the pastor moves closer to the boy’s position. He steps smartly across the street, walks up behind the little fellow and, placing his hand kindly on the child’s shoulder, leans over and gives the doorbell a solid ring. Crouching down to the child’s level, the pastor smiles benevolently and asks, “And now what, my little man?” To which the boy replies, “Now we run!”
Lesson: Be creative when it comes to solving your problem.
Before marriage, a man will lie awake all night thinking about something you say.
Enough said, we will stop here, feel free to go back to your playstation.

My wife, Natalie and I had been trying to have a family for nearly 5 years. We both went through medical check-ups to see if there were any problems with our bodies. All the results came back negative. We were both fine and no medical condition to explain why we could not conceive. We decided to go through assisted conception. We eventually went through four rounds of IUI (intrauterine insemination) and four rounds of IVF (in vitro fertilisation). Those were the hardest and toughest times of our lives.
God’s miracles came upon our life from the day we decided to have a family. After going through rounds of IUI and IVF, on the third round of IVF, we decided to find another doctor who specialises and is the best for IVF. Natalie found this doctor and we both believed this would be the right timing, knowing that this doctor has a good reputation and records of success in IVF. We put our own confidence before God even though we claimed that God would make a way for us, not knowing that God was doing something through us on this third round of IVF.

The church and cell group members, our families and friends prayed for us for a break through and miracles to come through in our lives. God was with us through the whole process, from the beginning to the birth of our little boy Eason Teh.

When we received the negative result, another failure of the process, the doctor told us that we might not be able to conceive at all as he had already given us all the medication, treatment and supplements. In addition, with our age, our chance of having any children is very slim. It was the lowest and saddest time of our lives. We were angry at ourselves as well as blaming each other. Had we eaten something we should not have? Were we putting enough efforts during the IVF?

On multiple occasions, we both cried and broke down before God, asking God for forgiveness and for help, and praying for mercy in our lives. Dying to self and submitting to God was the only option we had. We looked to God for His guidance and support; He was our last and only hope. One bible verse struck in my heart

When we started the process for the fourth round of IVF, I felt the assurance and confirmation from God, which then gave Natalie and me the confidence and courage that this round would be successful. With God’s assurance and confidence, I encouraged Natalie that God is in control of the whole situation; He would give life in Natalie’s womb. The life of little Eason started, and the miracle continues through the whole pregnancy. We felt the joy, peace and love from God as the pregnancy proceeded.

God continued to work miracles in us and in the life inside Natalie’s womb. He was there for every moment until the thirty ninth week of pregnancy, when Eason was

During the 9th and 10th week of pregnancy, the doctor took a test, and the result was not promising. It showed that the chance of deformation or Down syndrome is very high. This was another big blow to us, another hurdle to cross. It was difficult to comprehend and face the challenge. We decided to do a blood test called NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing) at 10th week of pregnancy. We continued to trust in God, praising Him for His works during that time. After the test, we waited and waited, hoping that the result would be negative. The result did come back negative - no evidence of Down Syndrome or any deformation. The peace from God came upon both of us, we knew that God was in control and would take care of the rest of the pregnancy.

Reach Community Church celebrated 20th anniversary in July. The theme of the celebration is “Our Journey of Faith”. Our task is to pass this faith from one generation to the next, and to the many generations to come. One of the presentations on the celebration night is a song “Find Us Faithful”, written by Jon Mohr, presented on the night by three generations of church members, the lyrics modified for our purpose:
Verse 1: We’re pilgrims on the journey Of the narrow road, And those who’ve gone before us Line the Cheeringway.onthe faithful, Encouraging the weary, Their lives a stirring testament To God’s sustaining grace.
Verse 2: After all our hopes and dreams Have come and gone, And our children sift through all We’ve left behind. May the clues that they discover, And the mem’ries they uncover, Become the light that leads them To the road we each must find.
OChorus may all who come behind us find us Mayfaithful, the fire of our devotion light their Mayway. the footprints that we leave, Lead them to believe, And the lives we live inspire them to obey. O may all who come before us find us faithful.
Sung by youth / Sunday School children Verse 4 We are full of hopes and dreams Learning to stand, Let us set our heart Live a life set apart. Looking on the faithful, Continue to be fruitful, Become the light that leads us Be the cloud of witnesses.

Does God owe me a healthy and prosperous life into my old age? A handsome husband, cheerful children, a functional family? A magnificent mansion, a successful career, a lavish lifestyle? If I hope to find fulfilment in someone or something, I will only be filled with a sense of failure, and fail to follow the faithful God.

Perspective
Being a paediatrician has changed my life perspective dramatically. Nothing in this world is sure and secure. Seeing so many people – especially children and young people - with unexpected turns in life, I dare not trust the way of the world. An accident can leave a child fully dependent for the rest of his life, with no prospect of living an independent life. A new diagnosis can shatter the dreams of a family. No one is immune from heartaches and hardships. How are we to face the unexpected turns in
Reach Reflection
Recently my sister told me that I am the only single person she knows who lives an enviable single life. She told me that I have the freedom to do the things I do; and I seem to enjoy my good life. She also told me that I am a contributor – I contribute to her family, to my brothers’ family and the community.
If I did not know who God is, I would not have been able to trust Him in the midst of disappointments and detours of life. Borrowing from John Piper, “We cannot truly love God without knowing God.” John Piper said that God revealed His glory in two books – the inspired Word of God and the created world of God. The created world is fallen due to sin, but the inspired Word is infallible. The Word helps me to re-orient myself to the reality and the reliability of God.
He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. (Psalms 62:6)
When I decided to become a paediatrician, I felt a very strong calling from God and His hand upon the whole journey of my training. Now that I am a paediatrician, I sometimes wonder why God had specifically wanted me to be a paediatrician. Afterall, there are many other people who can do a better job as a paediatrician than me. There are many paediatricians who are more influential and inspirational, more competent and compassionate than me.
I can’t help but reflect on what she said. It has been a long journey for me, to be a paediatrician and live a single life for such a long time, and I truly thank God for where I am right now.
life, to turn our face to God in expectation?
Expectation
I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in His word I do hope. (Psalms 130:5)
2022Spring/Reach 16
By Dr. Lee Chyi Lam
Being a paediatrician frees me from a sense of entitlement and expectation. Seeing the misfortunes and miseries of others causes me to cling onto God’s grace more. When I hold on to my expectation too eagerly and refuse to let go, life becomes unexpectedly difficult. The pre-conceived idea of what could make me happy strips me of the hope of finding true happiness.

Being a paediatrician reveals my own limitations. As much as I want to, despite the advancement of science, I have no ultimate control over life and death.
Godencounter.calledme
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (Matthew 6:34)

Reach Reflection 17 2022Spring/Reach
The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still. (Exodus 14:14)
to be a paediatrician, not only so I can be useful to society, but so He can use my experiences to grow deeper in Him. Growing deeper in Him, so I can be used by Him through disappointments and detours in life; through shattered dreams and battered self-esteem.
Control
And he said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.” (Job 1:21)
“And do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for behold, I will bring adversity on all flesh,” says the LORD. “But I will give your life to you as a prize in all places, wherever you go.” (Jeremiah 45:5)
When I dwell too much on my past – ruminating the good old time, or regretting past mistakes, I forget that I have a present life to live. When I am too focussed planning for the future, I forget to live fully in the present.

God paid a high price for you, so don’t be enslaved by the world. (1 Corinthians 7:23, NLT)
Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters – a pathway no one knew was there! (Psalms 77:19, NLT)
Afterall, there is no ideal destination to arrive in this world, where I must get to in this world, for my final destination is out of this world.
So, when God called me to be a paediatrician, it is not because I have good qualities to be an outstanding one; it is not so I can contribute something to the society. God meant it to change me from the inside out, with the experiences I
Similarly, I cannot control when and how my life will end here, but I can control how I live my life now. I cannot control the storm outside me, but I can choose stillness within me, if I allow God to captivate me.
Being a paediatrician helps me to appreciate what I have, instead of lamenting on what I lack. It helps me to focus on “what is”, instead of “what was” or “what will be”. The past – rewards and regrets – should teach me something, not to tear me. The future – unknown and unknowable – should inspire me, not to immobilise me.
