Introduction Welcome to the REAch2 Continuing Professional Development offer for 2019/20.

This year sees a significant change in the structure of REAch2. It is therefore appropriate that we make a few changes necessary to the way we deliver our continuing professional development (CPD) for our Trust, whilst preserving all the elements that you value.

This 2019/2020 CPD offer aims to deliver the longer term development opportunities that we know impact the most, while addressing the financial challenges facing schools in engaging with longer programmes. We also aim to capitalise on the new cluster model, where a tighter geography and an opportunity for close impactful co-operation presents itself.

The offer is split into three categories (Consistency, Development and Service Support) and is supported by the REAch2 Flightpath (to follow).

Consistency offer: The Consistency offer is open to all schools where attendance is expected from the intended audience. The offer includes important conference opportunities for us to gather as a Trust and a new system of opportunities for cluster work.

Development offer: The Development offer is optional for schools wishing to participate.

Cluster CPD: The offer is a suite of training and development opportunities open to schools working within clusters. These are recognised as of high value and are therefore the majority are fully funded places; attendance for these is optional and/or at the discretion of the cluster Deputy Director of Education (DDoE) working with the Directors of Education and Headteachers.

Endeavour Teaching School Alliance: Working in close collaboration with the Endeavour Teaching School Alliance (ETSA), there is a

growing range of developmental programmes that schools and clusters can draw from. This includes accessing Specialist Leaders Education (SLE) and Outstanding Teacher Mentor (OTM) support.

Cluster Joint Practice Development: This utilises our cluster twilight sessions, our ability to introduce more INSET days and the highly researched model of Joint Practice Development (JPD).

Clusters will be able to collaborate and focus development on areas bespoke to their requirements, delivering on the need for sustained professional development, working in close partnership with their Deputy Director of Education (DDoE).

CPD will evolve over the coming year as we adapt and respond to the emerging needs across the Trust, but our 2019/2020 offer is built with the deliberate intent of meeting school and staff needs, delivering on our vision of ‘Exceptional Opportunities for Learning’ and ensuring that schools access high quality CPD despite tighter budgets nationally.

As courses, programmes and events are likely to unfold as the year progresses, we advise you to keep an eye on the Intranet and CPD newsletters.

This one-day summer conference is our final point of communication between central and school teams.

The principle focus of the day is to allow schools and clusters to share with each other the successes and outcomes of their Joint Practice Development.

This platform is to communicate the results of JPD and is both a genuine celebration of development and achievement and a valuable opportunity for all schools to be able to learn from each other.

SEND Conference Conferences

The conference aims to support SENCos and those working with inclusion, through: • A morning keynote speech from a national leading SEND voice which identifies the latest developments in the SEND field and signposts issues that SENCos need to be aware of • Ensuring that clear actions necessary are communicated with supportive ideas and suggestions • Practical afternoon workshops that deepen understanding of current key issues • Opportunities to liaise with peers and so establish a growing network of peer support both across clusters and the Trust The full agenda is released nearer the time to ensure that the conference addresses the most up to date issues and developments in the SEND landscape.

Operational Success Workshops Leadership

These events are mandatory for SBMs and vital to the smooth operational running of all schools.

The workshops cover a variety of different subjects relating to Finance, HR, Estates, Governance, IT and any other areas of work falling under business operations within schools.

The workshops provide updates and, where appropriate, ‘hands on’ sessions to support schools with:

• Compliance • Reporting and returns • Policy and procedure • Changes to legislation • Best practice

The Early Career Mentor Development Programme

Detail: This programme gives NQT mentors the tools needed to effectively support and drive the development of our newest teachers. We know that high quality mentoring support is fundamental in giving NQTs a successful start to a career in teaching and, ahead of the statutory national implementation of the Early Career Framework (ECF) in 2021, this programme enables mentors to: • understand the specialist support required by early career teachers • develop a toolkit of mentoring strategies, underpinned by REAch2 Touchstones • support and drive the progress of early career teachers from their given starting points

Safer Recruitment Training Leadership

This one-day training supports schools in ensuring that recruitment panels include individuals who have received the best possible safer recruitment training.

REAch2 has recently qualified our HR and Safeguarding Teams to deliver an NSPCC-accredited safer recruitment programme. Historically, safer recruitment training was overseen by the CWDC and had to be renewed every 5 years, but in recent years this oversight and the accompanying expectations have been relaxed; this means that schools may not have benefitted from recent research and learning that has arisen from national safer recruitment reviews, nor from an opportunity to share best practice with colleagues and hear about a range of strategies that are implemented for safer recruitment across our schools.

In order to maintain a clear oversight of safer recruitment practice in the Trust, in line with Ofsted’s reiterated expectations regarding Trustee responsibility for safer recruitment in the 2019 Ofsted framework, we will begin a full roll out of safer recruitment training to all schools in the next academic year.

Team Teach Leadership

One delegate per school will be trained to use a range of strategies designed to support school staff in responding to challenging behaviour. Strategies are designed specifically to promote positive behaviour through gradual and graded de-escalation. Training includes an understanding of the implications and practice of the last resort action of positive handing actions. The entire training is intended to leave relationships intact.

The course blends practical application and theory to ensure the best outcomes in schools.

Facilitator(s)/Team: Drawn from the ASL and Safeguarding teams who have been trained as trainers through a rigorous TEAM TEACH process.

CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN CLUSTERS 14

Moving from regions to clusters affords an excellent opportunity to draw on the strengths already achieved in clusters and to forge deeper and stronger relationships. In delivering ‘Exceptional Opportunities for Learning’ for our staff, it also affords an opportunity for us to bridge the gap between what we know is highly effective CPD and the reality of shrinking school budgets that cannot sustain the time, travel and supply teacher costs.

What we know is highly effective CPD1:

It should focus on improving and evaluating pupil outcomes

•

It should be underpinned by robust evidence and expertise

•

It should include collaboration and challenge

•

Development should be sustained over time

•

It should be championed and prioritised by school leadership

How we can deliver effective CPD in clusters, with minimal cost to schools By schools identifying and liaising over some shared twilight INSET throughout the year and through setting additional INSET days using our freedoms as a MAT, all staff can access highly effective CPD by working collaboratively on Joint Practice Development (JPD) and in delivering the REAch2 Flightpath.

Joint Practice Development ‘The process of learning new ways of working through mutual engagement that opens up and shares practices with others…. the process by which individuals, schools or other organisations learn from one another involves interaction and mutual development, sometimes co-constructing new ways of working.’ 2 By enabling staff at all levels to engage in structured JPD across the clusters, schools are able to investigate and address areas of development bespoke to their role and cluster, with significantly less cost and potentially very strong and impactful outcomes. It is intended that outcomes should be shared with the entire Trust so that the benefits can have a wider impact. This will be done in a final Headteacher conference in 1st July 2020, see page. 5.

The systems and processes for cluster delivery of JPD will be orchestrated through the Cluster DDoE, in close liaison with school leadership teams.

The REAch2 Flightpath. 3 The REAch2 Flightpath is designed to support the development of our education based workforce providing a clear route for career progression augmented with the experiences, both formal and informal, necessary to work optimally within role and to prepare for the next career stage. For those teachers wishing to stay in class and not progress in a linear fashion, there are CPD options to deepen teachers’ pedagogy, practice and whole-school impact. The Flightpath sits alongside the appraisal process, ensuring that CPD is personalised to the individual and that it works with the Cluster JPD to deliver bespoke opportunities for learning and the achievement of appraisal targets.

To support School Adventure Ambassadors (SAAs) in delivering the 11 Before 11 Curriculum, there will be two half days available where SAAs have an opportunity to work alongside experienced Regional Adventure Ambassadors (RAAs). The sessions offer valuable space and time to undertake the planning that may be difficult for SAAs to secure in school.

This enables them to: • Plan in the further development of adventures into the school curriculum • Secure venues and dates for the year ahead • Liaise with other SAAs to work in tandem in delivering promises and securing best value for certain adventures • Share venues and partnerships where best value has been procured Date

Schools are warmly invited to engage with as much Development training as they would like to access. There is recognition that REAch2 schools – like the rest of the country – face increasing challenges with budgets and, for this reason, we have absorbed as much cost as we can.

Aspiring Leaders These residential days are created and facilitated by Sir Steve Lancashire, and designed for Deputy Headteachers who are aspiring to headship. The purpose of the days is to develop, nurture and sustain leadership potential across REAch2 by: • Developing a core group of future leaders with the professional strategies, confidence, resilience and knowledge base to effect school improvement across their school and REAch2 as the educational landscape changes.

Good to Great “Greatness is not a function of circumstance. Greatness, it turns out, is largely a matter of conscious choice, and discipline.” - Jim Collins The REAch2 ‘Good to Great’ programme supports a cohort of schools on their improvement journey.

Our programme enables schools to share and build on highly effective practice, empowering them to feel confident to self-evaluate themselves as ‘outstanding’ within the next 12-24 months and in preparation for their next inspection.

Through visits to other outstanding schools across the country, both within REAch2 and beyond, participants are exposed to innovative and successful models of school leadership. This programme will challenge perceptions of what is possible and facilitate strategic school improvement through insight, reflection and planning.

With five sessions over the period of an academic year, the programme considers leadership through a systematic, theme-by-theme challenge. Most sessions are hosted in a different Ofsted ‘outstanding’ or high-performing school and will include the opportunity to look behind the scenes, drill down more deeply into a vital element of the school’s leadership and draw out the lessons you can apply to your own institution. Moderator Training 18

Time to be; time to lead: Exploring the inner world of our leadership insight events - Cohort 2 Due to resoundingly positive feedback, this course will be open for a second year. Cathie and Maggie have designed and written the course specifically for REAch2 leadership.

Drawing on the theory and practice of mindfulness, the sessions build over time to enable participants to explore and handle day to day stress and uncertainty whilst working with inner self judgment and doubt.

The chief aim is to strengthen leaders’ ability to respond skilfully to complexity and challenge, enabling them to look at and embody what it means to be a whole-hearted leader, being the best we can be to better serve the children in our care.

Each event is bridged with weekly supportive and ongoing development tasks that work to build participants’ mindfulness practice.

Please note that on signing up, you are signing for all three sets of dates as the programme builds on previous learning experiences.

Mindfulness: .begin REAch2 is proud to be working with the Mindfulness in Schools Project to deliver mindfulness training to all staff who would like to practice mindfulness and reap the benefits. Teach Paws b Paws b is a leading mindfulness curriculum for 7-11 year olds. Paws b aims to use mindfulness to support children’s mental health, learning, behaviour and social and emotional needs. Aimed at those either new to middle leadership or those needing a refresher, with a clear intent on strengthening middle leadership impact in schools and its connection to senior leadership. Towards Excellence in Middle Leadership has been specifically written to address the need for stronger middle leadership across the Trust and to support them in ensuring strong outcomes under the new OfSTED framework.

The programme supports middle leaders by clearly articulating best practice in delivering impact in school through: • How to establish starting points and have a clear vision of where they are heading; how to use school documentation and processes effectively • Practical ideas where participants apply learning in situ to their own school context • Understanding the personal skills and behaviours to manage increased workload effectively and to lead others • Understanding how they contribute to school-wide impact and culture through ensuring strong communication with all school stakeholders Facilitator(s)/Team: Drawn from the trained cluster and/or Trust staff Date

A six week programme over consecutive weeks, Towards Excellence Phase 1 supports teachers in their development over time who need to secure a higher standard of every day classroom practice.

The programme blends a solid foundation of pedagogical understanding with practical strategies for classroom application. Regular observations of good practice support participants’ understanding of how the theory and ideas look in practice.

Delegates for this programme must have an in-school mentor who is able to support with gap tasks and ensure that new learning is applied rigorously and must have been teaching for at least two years.

This two day programme is aimed at Senior Leaders to enable reflection and action planning around whole-school approaches to mental health provision.

The Leading a Mentally Healthy School training programme was funded by Health Education England (HEE) and created by the School Development Support Agency (SDSA) in partnership with an expert group of educational psychologists, education consultants and mental health organisations.

Details Our NQT programme offers a high quality, professional development journey for teachers at the start of their career. The programme has been designed with Specialist Leaders of Education across our alliance to support NQTs in developing the quality and impact of their practice. Our comprehensive 12-session programme provides a reflective and supportive environment to nurture and grow potential. Facilitators are highly skilled, experienced classroom practitioners who will develop NQTs’ understanding and practice through a programme which provides: • Opportunities to observe and discuss good and outstanding lessons within the host school • Practical resources to adapt and use in the classroom • Access to outstanding practitioners for Q&A around each focus area • Opportunities to network and liaise with peers and other professionals • Reflection time and action-planning

NATIONAL PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: AN ENDEAVOUR TEACHING SCHOOL ALLIANCE, AMBITION SCHOOL LEADERSHIP AND REACH2 PARTNERSHIP. For the third year running, we are working in partnership with both the Endeavour Teaching School Alliance (ETSA) and Ambition School Leadership. As REAch2 qualifies for fully funded places under the Government guidelines, we are able to once more offer these nationally accredited and recognised qualifications to schools at no cost.

Please note the process for application: As with all courses booked on REACH TEACH, the line manager for those wishing to engage with the NPQs must be authorised on REACH TEACH. For serving Headteachers wishing to engage in the NPQH, authorisation must come from their Deputy Director of Education. This needs to be via email to the Head of Training and Development.

National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) Endeavour Teaching School Alliance in partnership with REAch2

The main focus of this programme is to ensure that all participants increase their confidence and capability in the core skills and responsibilities of an effective school leader. The course will empower participants to develop a strong network to support them as Headteachers.

Participants are assessed through a written assignment to ensure that they have reached the qualification requirements, plus a viva interview to assess them against the more challenging Ambition bar.

The programme comprises a series of training sessions, along with pre- and post-reading, a nine-day school placement and an in-school impact project.

The sessions cover six core areas: • Leadership skills for Headteachers • School self-evaluation and school improvement planning • School culture and vision • Operational management of a school including finance and HR • Teaching, learning and curriculum • Pastoral leadership In order for both aspiring and serving Headteachers to receive their qualification, they will need to complete the project element of this qualification successfully. This is in two parts: • Lead a change programme at whole-school level, lasting for at least two terms, to improve pupil progress and attainment. They will need to present the plan to their governing board prior to implementation and gather their feedback.

• Undertake a placement in a contrasting school (for example, by performance, pupil profile, geography), lasting at least nine working days.

It is therefore essential that the school understands the level of support they will need to put in place when they are placing participants on the programme.

The programme consists of a series of training sessions, along with pre- and post-reading and an in-school impact project.

The training sessions cover five core areas: • Self-development and stepping up into senior leadership • Strategic leadership using data • Leadership of whole-school CPD • Teaching and learning improvements • Horizon scanning and looking to the future To make sure they get the most out of the programme, participants will need to carry out pre-and post-workshop reading outside of the sessions.

Participants will also be directed to a bank of online resources designed to supplement and enhance learning and so prepare them for the written assessment.

For both aspiring and serving middle leaders to receive their qualification, they need to complete the project element of this qualification successfully. This is to lead an improvement project in their team, lasting for at least two terms, aimed at improving pupil progress and attainment and the capability of their team.

It is essential that the school understands this element of the programme, and the support that will be required of them, when they are placing participants on the programme.

What are Specialist Leaders of Education (SLEs)?

Specialist Leaders of Education are outstanding middle and senior leaders who have the skills and experience to support individuals or teams in similar positions in other schools. This outreach work typically involves coaching or mentoring other leaders to create sustainable improvements in key areas of school development.

I would like some SLE support for my staff; how do I request it?

As indicated in the School to School Support Quality Assurance Process, if you need SLE support in one of the core areas, you should speak to DDoE in the first instance so that your needs can be reviewed at the half-termly Core Meeting. Depending on the prioritisation of your support needs, the SLE support may be funded through the REAch2 core offer. If your support needs do not meet this threshold, you may wish to commission and self-fund some bespoke SLE support directly from the Endeavour Teaching School Alliance (ETSA). You may also wish to do this if you require SLE support in an area outside of the core areas, e.g. MFL, PE or behaviour and pastoral care. What role does the Endeavour Teaching School (ETSA) Alliance play in School-to-School Support?

ETSA has strategic oversight for the designation, de-designation and recruitment of School-to-School Support (StSS) roles as well as the training and development of individuals carrying out these roles. In addition, ETSA oversees: • Quality assurance and evaluation of StSS roles and impact across (and where applicable outside) REAch2, identifying trends and patterns • Dissemination of information to the Senior Education team about StSS effectiveness and the adaptation of the strategy where needed • Ensuring systems and processes for designation, deployment, monitoring and evaluation are fit for purpose

How much does SLE support cost?

If your support needs do not meet the threshold for funded support, the daily rate for an SLE is £350.

How do I become an SLE? Becoming an SLE is fantastic professional development. As well as offering support in other schools, SLEs have opportunities to become involved in programme

development and facilitation in their specialist area and are highly valued as Teacher Educators. ETSA holds recruitment cycles depending on the needs within the Trust, often on a termly basis. There is a rigorous selection process and your application to be an SLE has to be supported by your Headteacher. We will advertise recruitment periods on our website and via REAchIn. What about Outstanding Teacher Mentors (OTMs)?

If you are not quite ready to be an SLE, you may want to consider becoming an OTM. OTMs are excellent classroom practitioners who focus on developing the skills and expertise of other teachers through coaching, mentoring and modelling best practice. OTMs must possess a minimum of two years’ experience in a teaching role and be observed as a consistently good or outstanding practitioner over time. There is a rigorous selection process and your application to be an SLE has to be supported by your Headteacher.

SERVICE SUPPORT Coaching in REAch2 Coaching in REAch is designed to offer people at all levels a means of both support and challenge. A dialogue evolves from any concerns or problems brought to the session. It is a means of providing alternative ways of thinking that can help people in complex situations to overcome barriers and find ways of moving forward or an alternative route.

Coaching also offers an opportunity for reflection and the development of greater insight into an individual’s self-awareness, self-management and personnel management skill-set.

Possible areas for development and challenge in Coaching: • Managing and leading a challenging team or individual team members • Developing different types of leadership styles • Improving self-awareness and self-management • Developing greater confidence in a role or situation • Understanding the difference between rational and irrational thinking • Managing the difference between states of urgency and panic • Improving interactions amongst team members Opening up the possibilities of change Coaching can be a valuable medium for long-term and short-term development and performance. Requiring openness to being simultaneously challenged and supported in the pursuit of personal and professional growth, coaching is an essential ingredient on this journey.

Typically, coaching can last for six to eight sessions over a period of 12-15 months.

This can be adapted to suit individual needs and requirements. Coaching is able to be conducted in a professional setting or in a more informal situation.

Personal and Team Professional behaviour awareness In addition to the Coaching offered within the Trust, there is now an opportunity to support and develop both personal and team effectiveness even further. Through the use of a professional behaviour evaluator provided by Colourworks/Discovery Insights, accessed through an online link completed by individuals, a series of questions generate a bespoke profile that can be used to enhance personal and team effectiveness.

Health and Safety e-learning From September 2019, REAch2 staff will have user names to access a wide range of courses using the e-learning platform FLICK Learning.

In development throughout 2019-2020, core ‘learning journeys’ for staff will be mapped out to ensure an assigned number of training courses are available as standard for schools.

Courses are developed and added on a regular basis. A sample of courses that are available include:

Disclaimer for non-attendance at events Wherever possible, we have tried to ensure that costs to schools are minimal, in the interest of supporting all schools to access training and development. To ensure maximum efficiency in using the Trust allocated budget, it is therefore necessary for us to charge for event places that are not attended or that are cancelled without good reason, covering the full day delegate rate of the host venue. This guidance is designed to provide clarity and transparency for leaders on our cancellation policy.

No charge will be made for non-attendance by the booked participant when: • The place is cancelled more than one week before the event date • An appropriate team member is sent as a substitution • There is an OfSTED inspection at your school

What will be charged?

The charge will be the full day delegate rate charged by the hosting venue.

What should I do if I cannot attend the training that I have booked?

If you are unable to attend for any reason, please let your designated cluster administrator know (for cluster training events) or Jo Littman (for central training events) as soon as possible via email or phone before 08:00.

We will invoice for any non-attendance that does not meet the criteria detailed above, via our finance team
