Tawnshi Greetings

Red Deer Polytechnic acknowledges that we learn and work on Treaty 7, Treaty 6 and Métis ancestral lands, the gathering place of many Indigenous peoples. This is where we will strive to honour and transform our relationships with one another.

Why RDP?

Our innovative campus and diverse programming, along with industry and community connections, will transform your future.

WHY A POLYTECHNIC?

We’re the best of both worlds. As a unique polytechnic, RDP combines the in-depth study found at universities with the advanced practical skills training of a technical school, resulting in highly employable graduates.

Our programs include Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and Education alongside a strong mix of Skilled Trades, Sciences, Health Sciences, Technology and Business.

Education and training at RDP is fundamentally applied, skills based and integrated with industry needs. Through experiential learning, technology integration and applied research opportunities, you’ll learn from industry experts in innovative facilities.

Our City

What’s so special about Red Deer?

It’s the best of both worlds, offering big city amenities with the affordability, friendliness and community spirit of a smaller centre.

Red Deer is young, vibrant, and growing fast with a median age of under 35 years. The city and region offers a wide variety of athletic, cultural, educational and social opportunities throughout the year. Enjoy exploring more than 110 km of trails that traverse the Waskasoo Park System, participating or watching sports in top-notch facilities, discovering unique attractions and attending a variety of cultural events.

Located in between the major cities of Calgary and Edmonton and a short drive from the Rocky Mountains and the Canadian Badlands, Red Deer is the ideal place to learn and live as you explore the picturesque scenery and opportunities that Alberta has to offer.

WHAT ARE THE BEST THINGS ABOUT LIVING IN RED DEER?

110

kilometres of biking & walking trails connect the city with our campus, along with cross country ski trails, a mountain bike park and Alberta’s largest non-mountain ski area.

312

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Tristan

Wine

After earning an Engineering Technology Diploma at RDP in 2019, Tristan Wine continued his education and then returned to RDP as an Applied Research Technician in the Polytechnic’s Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing (CIM-TAC).

As a Technology Access Centre, the CIM-TAC is a 15,000 square foot innovative hub that helps entrepreneurs with product and process development and improvement through technical services and applied research.

RDP is ranked as one of Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges/Polytechnics.

Our Alternative Energy Lab (AEL) serves as a teaching, research and data hub and features over 4,200 photovoltaic solar panels on main campus.

RDP is the recipient of several prestigious national and international awards for our leadership in emissions reduction, green energy generation and waste reduction.

Through our Green Campus Master Plan, we are on our way to becoming a net zero energy institution by 2031.

“The skills and knowledge that I acquired throughout my courses and post-secondary opportunities have directly helped me perform the duties of an Applied Research Technician at RDP,” he says,

“This job has helped me to acquire that knowledge by providing me with the physical and software tools to learn and develop projects for clients in the real world.”

At the Polytechnic, Tristan has been further preparing for a career in engineering by being immersed in real-world situations.

“I’m performing duties that I enjoy in an environment that will likely resemble my future work,” he explains. “I wanted to gain more experience working with clients to develop practical and innovative solutions for their engineering challenges and RDP was the perfect environment to do that.”

The CIM-TAC offers $7.6 million in prototype and advanced manufacturing equipment, including 3D printers, laser scanners, laser cutting machine, waterjet cutter and a thermal vacuum former.

In 2022, more than 1,300 engagements were made with business and industry partners and 73 projects were initiated in the CIM-TAC.

Health

“The personable instructors established high professional and academic standards. In clinical, we had the direct support of our clinical instructors and the primary nurses on the unit, which added depth and value to the skills we learned. Some of the most valuable and memorable moments came from learning new skills in labs and practicing them in clinical settings alongside our peers.”

SPOTLIGHT ON

Environment & Ecology Applied Research

At RDP, we are committed to pushing boundaries, fostering partnerships and driving real change in the area of Environment and Ecology. Through the efforts of our faculty and students, we continue to forge new frontiers in applied research, such as seasoned biologist and RDP instructor, Sandra MacDougall. She was instrumental in pioneering the Alberta Wildlife Watch Program, which employs realtime data to identify collision hotspots and embeds strategies for reducing wildlife-vehicle incidents into transportation planning.

Another example is Dr. Cyrus Taheri, a faculty member in the Donald School of Business, Science and Computing, who leads pioneering research in applied and environmental microbiology, notably addressing root rot, a critical ailment plaguing field pea cultivation across the Canadian Prairies. His work with his students is instrumental in shaping more resilient and sustainable crop management approaches.
