Finger amputations lead to $180K fine for trailer company

Glenn Farrell v LC Investing Pty Ltd/As Basic Trailers 27/03/2023

An Adelaide trailer manufacturer has been fined $180,000 after a young worker lost five fingers in only his second week in the job.

The 18-year-old suffered partial finger amputations to both index and middle fingers and to his left ring finger while working with an inadequately guarded guillotine in November 2020.

His Pooraka-based employer LC Investing, trading as Basic Trailers, was fined $180,000 in the South Australian Employment Tribunal last week following a SafeWork SA investigation.

His Honour Deputy President Stephen Lieschke initially imposed a $300,000 fine, before applying a 40 per cent reduction as a result of contrition and an early guilty plea.

Basic Trailers pleaded guilty to the guarding offence under Section 32 of the Work Health and Safety Act 2012.

Protect your assets if leasing, renting, or hiring out goods

A PPSR registration lets others know that you are claiming a security interest in the goods when you are selling on retention of title terms or when hiring, renting or leasing out goods for more than two years.

This is particularly helpful for businesses and sole traders in areas such as construction who frequently sell, lease or hire out plant and machinery, either separately or as contracts of works.

With a valid registration, you are in the best position to get your goods, or their value back, if your customer doesn’t pay or goes out of business. + A valid registration on the PPSR may also put you ahead of other creditors should your customer default or go broke.

Remember: A retention of title clause (indicating that title remains with you until goods are paid for in full) in your contract or invoice no longer protects you on its own. Make sure you back up your contracts by registering your interest on the PPSR.

Business advice & assistance starting a business

Aluminium Plus is a local company in Salisbury South established in 1998. From awning and shop-front windows to stainless steel, multi-fold or decorative security doors, and even custom-orders, Aluminium Plus provides high quality, attractive and secure windows and doors. It is now owned by Shane and Mel Spher who both got a clearer view about doing business when they attended a Polaris Business Fundamentals Workshop. Mel also attended Women In Business events to hear others’ stories and experiences with their businesses. Inspired, informed and ready as can be, they bought Aluminium Plus in 2019.

Transitioning into small business owners, Shane and Mel quickly got to know its inherent customs and practices, and eventually sought guidance to clear the way for greater growth. They signed up for a marketing program with Polaris and found that extremely helpful in learning how to promote the business and set up a website.

They then joined Mentoring for Success for more personalised support. Over the last nine months, their mentor has been guiding them across all aspects of their business, particularly with how to build a winning team, manage staff, prepare for expansion and get systems in order with good budget control and financial reporting.   Click here to watch the Alumiuminiu Plus Video.

Aluminium Plus has maintained and developed their reputation with glowing feedback on their quality products, hassle-free delivery, excellent service, and in-depth knowledge. Growth has been steady, and they are in good form to begin their expansion soon.

Visit the Polaris Centre’s website for more information about our mentoring packages.

The power of a remarketing strategy

Remarketing, also known as retargeting, is where you target potential customers who have visited your website without making a purchase, a booking or completing an enquiry form. By remarketing you are keeping your brand at the front of your customers’ mind for when they are ready to convert.

It will boost sales/leads and reclaim any lost opportunities. Here are some strategies you can use in your business to help remarket.

1. Dynamic Remarketing:

With this strategy, you tailor your ads to individual user behaviour. Instead of showing generic ads to everyone, dynamic remarketing allows you to display the exact products or services that users viewed on your website. This level of personalisation can be incredibly compelling, as it reminds users of their specific interests and increases the chances of conversion. This is great for product based businesses.

2. Abandoned Cart Remarketing

It targets customers who added items to their shopping carts but didn’t complete the purchase. You can send reminders via email or paid ads to direct these potential customers back to finalise their purchase.

3. Email Remarketing

Email remarketing involves sending personalised emails to users who visited your website but didn’t convert. These emails can highlight the products or services that users showed interest in and provide a clear call to action. Email remarketing is an effective way to re-engage users and gently guide them back to your website.

Remarketing isn’t just about boosting sales; it’s also about nurturing relationships with potential customers. By delivering timely, personalised messages, you can build trust and brand loyalty, making remarketing an integral part of your overall marketing strategy.

When Should a Business Outsource?

Trying to do everything yourself can lead to feeling overwhelmed and distracted. Should you consider outsourcing functions in your business?

As a business owner, it can seem tempting to do everything. However, with burnout an increasing problem for business owners, should you consider outsourcing to lighten the load?

The benefits of outsourcing can be multiple; from relieving the burden on existing staff to getting access to specialist skill sets.

Trying to be a jack of all trades may seem to be a money-saving strategy on the surface, but actually it can backfire. Overwork can cause stress in relationships, mental and even physical health issues.

Also, taking on too many different types of tasks can mean that you don’t have enough headspace left to focus on important things, like building customer relationships, setting goals, and developing new products or marketing plans. Outsourcing can provide huge benefits which free you from the day-to-day quagmire to think and execute more strategically.

What Can I Outsource?

It can be overwhelming to know where to start – but a good rule is to think about the aspects of running your business that you enjoy the least.

I’d suggest making a list of the top three things you’d rather not be doing on a daily basis, and then identifying whether these can be easily transferred to a third party.

This particularly applies to tasks that require specialist knowledge, such as search engine optimisation (SEO), bookkeeping, graphic design, social media, and Google ads management.

Some tasks are so specialised that you feel like a duck out of water and on such a steep learning curve, it’s overwhelming. That’s the time to think about outsourcing to the specialists.

Or, if you’re taking so many routine calls after hours or when you’re trying to do other work, you might want to look at call centre services that can manage your calls 24/7.

And while it’s possible to offshore some tasks, the compliance burden still sits with your business.

It’s important to note you can’t outsource compliance. You need to take responsibility for managing your outsource vendor relationship and ensuring they have the appropriate frameworks in place to protect your customer data. If something goes wrong, the buck stops with your business, not the outsourcer.

Where to Start

Once you’ve decided what to outsource, here are a few tips for finding and working with the right partner.

1. Finding a partner

• Understand all the options available – such as a freelancer (a sole operator) or an agency

• Ask for personal recommendations from your network

• Otherwise, try googling businesses who’ve worked in your industry. Read reviews and ask for examples of past work

• Meet with them and decide whether they’re a good fit for your business

• Have a clear idea of what you need and brief them comprehensively.

2. Working with a partner

• Draw up a contract and clearly agree on the scope of work and budget

• Provide meaningful feedback, and give them a chance to improve if you’re not happy with their work

• Ensure they’re aware of all your policies and procedures, such as your social media policy and code of conduct. Story reprinted from www.mybussiness.com.au
