RCLAS WRITER OF THE MONTH

Jude Neale

Jude Neale is a Canadian poet living on Bowen Island off of Vancouver. Her writing has been published frequently in journals like The Antigonish Review and Quill, online magazines such as Monday’s poem and Ascent Aspirations Magazine, and anthologies like the forthcoming Tri-City Anthology Portland, Seattle, Vancouver and The Wild Weathers Book of Love. Her book , Only the Fallen Can See (Leaf Press) was published in 2011. Her new collection A Quiet Coming of Light will be launched March 2, 2014 on Bowen Island and in Vancouver at the Cottage Bistro on March 28, 2014.

Jude Neale was shortlisted for the 2012 Gregory O’Donoghue International Poetry Prize (Ireland), The 2012 International Poetic Republic Poetry Prize (UK), The Mary Chalmers Smith Poetry Prize shortlist (UK), The 2013 Wenlock International Poetry Prize (UK), The Royal City Literary Arts Society Write on! short story and poem contest where she placed second in both categories. She was nominated for the 2012 Canadian ReLit Award and the Pat Lowther Award for her book Only the Fallen Can See. Jude is not your ordinary poet. Her specialty is children. She taught for over thirty years and has remained friends with many of those she mentored. She led a quiet revolution in teaching, expecting her students to look for the questions and never settle. For anything that isn’t smokin’ amazing!

They never disappointed and were often surprised and proud of their writing accomplishments.

Then came the prodigal son. Christmas morning birth. Away In A Manger and all that. She loved being a mom and soon had a girl to add sense to her wild house of inventors, worriers and clowns.

She moved to Bowen Island and soon hooked up with some very gifted writers who encouraged her to focus on her own imagistic work.

She thanks her family (Paulie, Jer, Katie, Geoff) for allowing their lives to fall onto her blank page.

My poetry manuscript was hidden beneath a mossy darkness and the relentless tears that drained my days, stole my years. What could I harvest from grief and the sure knowledge of despair? These poems were held together by the awful weight of bipolar disorder, each one reflecting back another facet of myself struggling to remain above water. As a mother, lover, teacher and daughter, I learned to carry my illness lightly, but I was a ragged butterfly trapped in a jar.

When depression entered I folded in on myself and my world shrank to black. I have since travelled many paths to find the light. Throughout this journey, I have created poems of such emotional intensity and evocative imagery that the reader is taken to my most secret place - a place of courage and hidden strength.

The poems are about love, even the fractured love you find when all you can do is sigh, yes. They are about unspeakable sadness and the way it infiltrates your innermost thoughts; and they are about hope, the hope that was fashioned out of pills and the touch of a loving hand linking me to a life well lived.

There are no cures for a lonely heart. The poems speak the truth of loss and longing, flying and letting go. They tell stories of connection with the past, and offer a beacon for others to follow. Through it all, the arms of family embraced me as I tremulously rallied from fear and pain. They have kept me from drowning on days when even the sound of a voice was more than I could bear.

This collection is for those who have tasted grief or grown small with despair. It chronicles the long search for happiness so rare in my beleaguered life. Each poem is steeped in the realization that through suffering and joy we find our humanity. They give a brief but intense look at what it means to be fully alive, particularly for those living with mental illness.

I spent years crying and seconds laughing, but which weighs more; the poem about a sunset, or the one speaking of annihilation? They speak of a woman, who, despite her fear, believed in the power of hope, with all its attendant frailties. A woman who knows that in the dark only the fallen can see.

I have been transformed by bipolar illness, and am glad to have touched those places that have given me tolerance, understanding, justice and truth. Every poem is a glimmer of the unspeakable burden of living with an illness that leaves hairline scars on the soul.

On February 13th, I attended the RCLAS workshop, “Rhyming Verse: The

Joy, The Curse” facilitated by one of our members, Garry Ward. We had a terrific turnout, and what an excellent workshop it was!

Garry has a very unique teaching style. He is very personable, employs a tremendous sense of humour, and draws everyone into participation. It was incredibly informative. As someone who has been writing poetry for more than forty years, I learned so many things about poetry that I never knew existed. I really had no idea there were such a variety of rhyming styles, i.e.

Internal Rhyme, Slant Rhyme, Eye Rhyme, etc., to name just a few. Wow! It was indeed a treat to attend such a comprehensive workshop. – Deborah Kelly

RCLAS SONGWRITERS OPEN MIC, February 2, 2014 Not a bad crowd for a Super Bowl Sunday, an event that drew some of our regulars.

The challenge word was "chicken" and those not chicken came up with sympathy-with-the-chicken songs and poems, some even making chicken sounds. Truly, a creative evening! The meanings attached to the term "chicken" (coward, gutless, mouse, baby, defenseless, etc) and our treatment of said captives revealed more than you want to know about humanity to borrow Enrico's favorite word. We threw into the mix other animals, small and defenseless, who got the same treatment from us humans, e.g. Enrico Renz's Crustacean song, really a song about the spiritual life of humanity (sorry, Enrico - I'll send you a royalty check). Lawren Nemeth, whose favorite T-shirt says something like "true, brave and free", sang about the chickens' desire to break out of the coop into a "free-range" life outside. We all cheered. Our sympathies are always with the underdog, if I may use a term the chickens would most likely disapprove of. As usual, other surprise guests appeared, such as Satan, ghosts of the past and a space man.

Max Tell finally sang he was "heading to Mars" and wouldn't be coming back. It took Janene White to calm us down with the "gold, orange and pink hues" above Shuswap Lake. Lavana La Brey sang one of my favorites, Working Girl Blues, and we all parted the best of working friends!

RCLAS SONGWRITERS OPEN MIC, February 9, 2014 at Renaissance Bookstore Since the indefatigable Ken Ader has reported video-ly (if there's no such word, there should be, my sentence requires it!), I'll just add a few takes of my own of the merry band of music-makers and poetry-producers in a place packed floor to ceiling with our audience -- books, books and more books. None of us could leave the place without adopting a few. There was a small adoption fee.

Jonina Kirton is a Métis/Icelandic poet living in New Westminster with her husband/editor. She is an active member of the Aboriginal Writers Collective – West Coast and this year she was honoured to be the Conference Coordinator for the National Indigenous Writers Conference.

Her long-standing fascination with her ancestors, death, desire and divination is reflected in her writing which has been described as “dark and delicate”. Her first book of poetry and lyric prose, page as bone – ink as blood, will be released in the Fall of 2015 with Talon Books.

It has been an exciting year as she also received first prize in the Poetry category and two honourable mentions in the Royal City Literary Arts Society’s inaugural Write On Contest 2013. In addition, she was a finalist in the Burnaby Writer’s Contest.

Her writing has been featured in, Royal City Poets anthology, Ricepaper’s Asian/Aboriginal issue, The Poetry of Science Chapbook Anthology, V6A: Writing from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Anthology, home & away Chapbook Anthology, between earth and sky an international anthology, V6A Enlightening Times UK, Other Tongues: Mixed - Race Women Speak Out Anthology, Pagan Edge, First Nations Drum, Toronto Quarterly, Quills Canadian Poetry Magazine, New Breed Magazine, Shine Journal, Joyful!, emerge Simon Fraser University’s Writers Studio Anthology 2007.

Jonina completed the Simon Fraser University Writer’s Studio in 2007, attended the Emerging Aboriginal Writers Residency at the Banff Centre in 2008. She continues to take Ingrid Rose’s Writing from the Body several times a year.

Although writing is her first love she is also devoted to her work with women and sacred circles. Her next book will be an exploration of the importance of reclaiming our spirituality and ritual and how this can strengthen our ability to bring forth our visions and goals.

12:45 – 1:45 Don Hauka – Both Sides Now: Essential Elements of Adaptation Adapting your book to the screen is tough – how about adapting your screenplay to the novel form? Don Hauka’s done both and learned the essential elements of adaptation. Participants will discover the secrets of the art of media-metamorphosis and answer hard questions like “What hill do you want to die on?” and “Which of your children do you want to murder first?” Hauka will use his personal experience in adapting his mystery novels to the screen and vice-versa and give other examples from Jane Austen to Plato to give participants the essential elements of adaptation.

2:00 – 3:00 Max Tell – presents Buzz Buzz and Hubub Max Tell, “Hands will clap, toes will tap, and mouths will bipity-bib-bamboom”. Please don’t ask what any of this word-womble means. It’s far too ridiculous, but lots of fun. An award winning songwriter, dubbed “The International Troubadour” for his many world tours and “BC’s Own Dr Seuss” for his playful turn of phrase, Max has delighted tens of thousands of children world wide for close to thirty years. Max has six acclaimed CDs to his credit and has received accolades for his songs and stories worldwide. Max Tell has a warm heart, a gentle nature, and a childlike sense of humour. His unique handling of language and vivid twist of phrase creates cartoons in the brain basket.

3:15 – 4:15 Margo Bates – What A Character! Humor Writing Workshop Stories and storytellers are the very fabric of our culture. We learn about history, society, and people’s experiences through their stories. Writing humor is an art.

Characters aren’t always funny. Stories are often serious. It’s the way a character reacts to a situation that can be humorous. Workshop participants analyze the story of Nana Noonan and her granddaughter Maggie Mulvaney, the main characters in P.S. Don’t Tell Your Mother by historical fiction writer Margo Bates. President of Canadian Authors Association

Classrooms #2217 11:00 – 12:00 Enrico Renz & Lawren Nemeth – Sense Rhythm and Rhyme Join Enrico Renz and Lawren Nemeth on an introductory to song writing. Sense rhythm and rhyme looks at the 3 different elements that makes a great song. This one hour course will get you moving in your seat as you learn about the most common mistakes in song writing. Enrico and Lawren have been Co-hosting the Song writer`s open mike for the Royal City Literary Arts Society at the Heritage Grill in New Westminster for the last year. All that is required is an open mind, a bit of soul and a small book for notes.

12:45 – 1:45 Ruth Kozak – Travel Writing Workshop: Blogs, Articles & Memoir Come and share your travel adventures in a travel writing workshop. Learn how to turn your travel adventures into marketable articles, creative non-fiction stories, and interesting blogs or travel memoirs. The workshop includes some 10 minute timed writings as well as writing instruction and critiquing, and how to write travel blogs and keep journals of your travel adventures.

2:00 – 3:00 Bob Robertson & Linda Cullen – Double Exposure’s – Introduction to Comedy Writing Canada’s multi award-winning comedy team of Linda Cullen and Bob Robertson, the creators of one of Canada’s most successful CBC radio and TV series, Double Exposure, will teach you the basics of writing comedy scripts. Using audio and video examples, the workshop will begin with the history of comedy and humourous writing. Participants will see many examples of comedy or humour writing, learn the role of parody and satire and see the basic structures of creating entertaining scripts. If you’ve always wanted to learn about comedy writing, this is the place to start, taught by two of Canada’s best comedy writers.
