Knox-Sherbrooke Auxiliary

Smiley Auxiliary

Knox-Sherbrooke Auxiliary formed in 1977. Its founder Norma Wangman was inspired to establish the Auxiliary as she spent much time at the RCH in ICU after her son suffered a head injury falling from a trampoline. Norma put an ad in the local paper calling for members, and soon membership of the new Auxiliary grew. Over 44 years, Knox-Sherbrooke Auxiliary contributed over $200,000 to support the most pressing needs of the hospital, including purchasing equipment such as intensive care cots, X-ray machines and monitors.

Smiley Auxiliary was formed in 2005 by Joan Courtney and Margaret Ash, community volunteers who wanted to make a difference to the lives of sick children. Through the generosity and dedication of their members and supporters, Smiley Auxiliary contributed over $300,000 to the hospital. The Auxiliary has supported several projects at the RCH, including the work of Prof Dinah Reddihough AO and the Neurodevelopment and Disability Department with a saliva control program, a part-time dental nurse and the Victorian Prader-Willi Register.

Knox-Sherbrooke Auxiliary officially closed in December 2020.

Smiley Auxiliary officially closed in December 2020.

“As a founding member of the Auxiliary I had the great pleasure of helping to raise money for the hospital especially as both my children needed life-saving operations as newborn babies.” – Lyn Elshaw, Knox-Sherbrooke Auxiliary

“Doing pod stalls was the best feeling each time we had the privilege to be at the RCH. We made numerous friendships with both staff and patients, some that we still have today. This is what we miss so much. It is with great sadness that we close our Auxiliary.” – Sandra Jones, Smiley Auxiliary
