August 2020 Competition Overview;

The c ompetition seeks ideas for the re-imagining of the Mausoleum & Keeper ’s Lodge with emphasis on the cultural benefit of future generations of its local community.

Food banks have reported a 89% rise in the demand for emergency food parcels, the number of families with children receiving parcels has doubled compared to figures from 2019.

Inspired by the resurgence of self-sufficiency we aim to give Hamilton a safe and secure place to foster a stable, sustainable food source with strong feelings of community owner ship. It is our hope that the space will be used by all the inhabitants of Hamilton, from older generations to young families as one leads the other in a drive for self-sufficiency. Our proposal includes a mix of landscaping and built features which together fulfil our concept of promoting health, well-being and community bonding.

The building incorporates two large community cooking spaces and dining areas, to facilitate cooking classes, intergenerational bonding and nutritional and environmental awareness. These areas would also provide a welcoming space for members of the community to host their own social gatherings, cooking for friends and family in a space they would not usually have access to. The sizable greenhouse with a wide southern elevation and rainwater collection system allows the growth of a wider variety of fruits and vegetables for longer periods of the year.

R E S I D E N T I A L R E T R E AT & P E R F O R M A N C E H A L L Brin g i n g m u s i c al ed u ca ti on to u n d er pr ivileged childr en 2019-2020 Project Overview;

This project explores a proposal for a retreat and performance space on the shores of Loch Lomond, as put forward by the charity Sistema Scotland, aiming to bring musical education to underprivileged children.

Responding to the landscaping, studying both existing architecture and geology of the site the project re-establi shes a lost connection between land and the Loch, anchored on the shores of Loch Lomond in the town of Balloch a scenic landscape becomes the backdrop to a scheme which fosters a sense of well-being, allowing Sistema Scotland to take children of all backgrounds on a musical retreat to be captivated in a new environment and richness of music.

Initial research focused on the geology of Loch Lomond, through gaining a deeper understanding of the landscape my proposal will bond with the environment, resulting in a proposal that highlights the surrounding landscape.

1:200 Floor Plans Laid out in an east-westerly direction, the building responds to its surroundings in several ways. The location of the buildings not only benefits from breath-taking views but also is a part of a wider environmental strategy established throughout the site. To achieve energy self-sufficiency the project is based on the passive use of solar energy.

Community Creating C o m m u n i t y, N e w L a n a r k Awar d s;

Project Overview;

A group of individuals who grow and develop their community through self-construction creating an overarching sense of place and belonging each inhabitant starts with a 4x4m module with the opportunity to develop and expand, forming clusters with other like-minded people creating workshops to express and celebrate collective interests.

Ultimately the scheme could grow and develop in multiple avenues, the possibilities are endless, the structure may grow to link with existing buildings in New Lanark, it may expand to the river or it may dissolve entirely, the structures composition allows for the chance of temporary architecture to grow, to become permanent or recede into the landscape.

Key component of the scheme is the participatory aspect of the architecture with the residents personalising aspects of the grid and growing their own homes through self-build activities and projects. All elements are designed to be handled by one individual making the task of expansion a manageable feat.
