President Speaks Hi everyone!

We had hectic activity during April with the mega event of Rotary Festival 2019! Preparations for Rotary festival had started from beginning of February itself! Rtn. Satish Gosavi, very cool & calm person as Chairman of this mega event supported by Club Secretary Rtn. Kaustubh, with Veena Bedekar as Project Chair 2 have been busy doing hectic work for this fund raising event of our Rotary Vikas Trust.

Gudi Padwa- the new year- on 6th April, was very auspicious for two reasons apart from the energizing celebration of Gudi Padwa. First, our club had an outstanding social recognition of “Aadarsh Dombivlikar Puraskar 2019” for the excellent work done for the community in the RY 2017-18 by IPP Dashrath Dongre and team! This is another feather in the cap of our club, having received District awards and RI Citation last year.

Secondly, our PDG Dr Ulhas Kolhatkar received a special award of Aadarsh Dombivlikar Puraskar 2019” for his yeoman service to society.

Gudi Padwa Shobhayatra!- on 6th April, started off from Bhagshala Maidan Dombivli (W) with huge participation from our club and others. Shobhayatra with colourful costumes with beautiful headgear (Pheta!) of men and women of our club was fascinating! The Lezim folk dance was superb!

On 9th April in our weekly meeting our Rotarian and Chairman of Rotary Festival, Satish Gosavi talked about the festival management, the status of booking of stalls, advances received and, importantly, allocation of responsibilities to make the event successful.

And The Rotary Festival 2019 started with a bang on 10th April'19! Complete children's park area was bedecked with colourful entrance, beautiful stage for the evening entertainment and the colourful stalls very well organized.

The event of Fun, Food, Trade, Education, Entertainment and display of various Art forms was being enjoyed by everyone!

The Rotary Festival was inaugurated by DGN Dr. Sandeep Kadam and guest of honour was Actress Madhurani Gokhale Prabhulkar.

Everyday there was entertainment program from 6 to 9pm which was organized by “Wired expressions”.

Programmes were enthralling the full house audience!

Kudos to Chair Rtn Satish Gosavi, chair-2 Rtn Veena and the whole team including PPs and Rotarians for making this fund raising event a great success! Special thanks to Rtn. Mukund Sabale for getting Entertainment and art and culture partner and for the overall support. We are thankful to Anantam, Globe and Total Sports for the sponsorship and support.

Our members helped in many aspects of the program like Rtn Rahul Patil for CCTV security, Caterer Amol Asinkar Bharat Purohit Prashant Rane Kiran Tanpathak, Venkatesh Dalvi for advertising van, Abhishek Bhagwat and many more!

On 17th April'19 we had thanksgiving programme for the entire team of Rotary festival coordinated by Rtn Satish.

This was followed by a talk by our Rtn Guru Dutt who presented a PowerPoint on “Enjoy the moments at the spectacular convention”!- explaining the beauty of the places the eight of our Rotarians (including PDG & PPs) visiting and the details of the RI Convention at Hamburg, Germany. Let us wish them safe journey and beautiful moments at the convention!

On 20th April another lovely event for school children to enjoy- Balkatta- was inaugurated by District Secretary Rtn Srijit Pothen with AG Viral Vira. Chairman Rtn Manas Pingle has organized the event meticulously. The Balkatta programme is on every Saturday and Sunday from 20th April to 12th May'19. We appreciate Manas and team for organizing this Balkatta event enjoyed by children and their parents every day of the event- see the full house each Saturday & Sunday to believe this!

On Wednesday 24th April'19, in our weekly meeting, our Rotary Ann Ms Mugdha Tanpathak spoke on the topic of “Fundaz and Relevance of Signature in Life”. She spoke on how signature affects in all arenas of our life, how it will transform into Autograph, how some patterns will affect our health, wealth, relation, career and how you can correct or improve your signature! Examples of celebrity signatures and live demo on our members, was very interesting.

Every day is Mother's Day Dear Friends, One problem that often arises on Mother's Day is which Mom, of all the Moms you know, do you spend the day with? You've got your Mom, Mother-in-law, wife and sister, and don't forget the 'great' grandma! Though every day is mother's day you need some reminder on your mobile since we all take things for granted until we lose them!

So here is the International Mother's day to celebrateon 12th May 2019! More than the greeting card or bouquet to all mothers, it is more important to –don't use digital communication, don't send message on WhatsApp!- phone and say hello! Each one will be glad to hear your voice and you too hearing to them.

If you are lucky to have all moms around, come up with the perfect plan—spend the day with all Moms, together, in one place. You must make each and every one feel special…!

“God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers”, said Rudyard Kipling. “Life began with waking up and loving my mother's face”, said George Eliot, novelist. Matru Devo Bhava, said the ancient Rishis! In the order of godly persons, Matru (Mother) is first, Pitru (Father) is second and Acharya (Guru or teacher) is third!

Every day is Mother's day! Have we managed ourselves, in our formative years (and even now!), without constant loving assistance from mother? The selfless soul is always available to you as long as she is with you in the world.

Mother's day is created by Anna Jarvis of the West Virginia, United States, and America declared the second Sunday in the month of May as the International Mother's day to celebrate motherhood.

A mother says, “I got phone calls from each of our boys, which means more to me than flowers or chocolate or almost anything you could give me. It's the people in our lives that make it special – the ones we need and the ones who need us. So I enjoy the moments. Life is a gift.

Being a mom has been a gift I've never taken for granted and have always cherished. And I thank God for every son, a sweet daughter-in-law and my own mom who, by God's choosing and her willingness, gave me life in the first place!”

This day we are grateful and we appreciate both our biological mothers and mother earth. We are here because of this mother and that mother. Every day of our life, we should appreciate all things and all people who are contributing to make our life what it is.

Everything that is needed for our wellbeing is just being taken care of by the creator. Every step we take- the planet is not giving in and breaking up! Every breath that we take- the air is not escaping from the atmosphere and denying us! All these millions of motherly or fatherly forces are working every moment of our life. So for everything that nature and people around us are providing, shouldn't we bow down in absolute gratitude?

The reason why this day has been fixed is because otherwise, we will never think of our mother! But if we are little more conscious and say, “Oh, these trees are giving me oxygen, they are supporting me every moment” then we will become conscious of celebrating life!

Mother's Day is a time to be grateful and appreciate not just our mothers, but every single aspect of creation because if you look closely, there isn't one thing in creation without which we can exist.

Rotary Youth Exchange changes lives Blog post, in celebration of Youth Service Month.

I was inspired to become involved in the Rotary Youth Exchange program in the 1980s while I was a secondary school principal and the school hosted our first international exchange student. A young lady, an Inbound Exchange student from South Africa, spent the year at our school. She had never been taught by a non-white teacher and had some hesitations about attending his classes.

The trepidations soon disappeared. She grew to know and respect the teacher as a person and thoroughly enjoyed his classes.

Perhaps, more i m p o r t a n t l y, s h e realized her attitudes could be challenged.

As a result of seeing this student from South Africa having this unique experience I learned that Rotary Youth Exchange not only changes the lives of youth but also enriches their lives. I knew that I wanted to join Rotary and become involved with Youth Exchange.

In the 26 years I have been a member of the Rotary Club of Courtenay, I have been on almost all of our club's Youth Service committees, as well as president of my club and also the Rotary Club of Kyiv Multinational in Ukraine.

Throughout this time I remain a supporter and promoter of Rotary Youth Exchange and youth programs.

Student of the month During the 1990s, I started a local Rotary Student of the Month programme, which now includes each of the four secondary schools in Courtenay. Every month a school brings a student to our meeting to receive a plaque recognizing them as their student of the month. The students who receive this recognition are those that best 04

illustrate the Four Way Test within their respective school.

These students are selected by their school administration and recognized at our regular meeting, at their secondary school, and in our local paper.

In 2009, I helped organize the first Certified Interact club at PS 155 in Kyiv, Ukraine. The principal not only embraced the goals of Interact, but also the benefits of having his school adopt the Four Way Test as a guide for student behaviour within their school, c o m m u n i t y, a n d country. I continue to communicate with the Principal on a regular basis, exchanging ideas and looking for opportunities for the PS 155 and G.P. Vanier Interact Club in Courtenay to work together. The two Interact clubs exchange packages, videos, and projects that they are involved in. Members of each club have become more understanding of the cultural differences as well as similarities of each other's schools and countries.

Recently, I initiated a district grant application for an international project proposed by the Interact Club of PS 155 in Kyiv, Ukraine and assisted by the G.P. Vanier Interact Club in Courtenay. The project focuses on increasing immunization awareness in Ukraine, particularly the rural regions where immunization is viewed with uncertainty by many people. The uniting of two Interact clubs, one in Kyiv and one in Courtenay, in a humanitarian project such as immunization awareness helps illustrate to students how people from different countries can make a positive change in the lives of others.

Timotheus Höttges, born in 1962, is Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Deutsche Telekom AG since January 2014. From 2006 to 2009 he was member of the Board of Management responsible for the T-Home unit. Under his leadership, T-Home became the market leader in terms of new DSL customers and developed its Internet TV service and Entertain, into a mass-market product while at the same time stabilizing its profitability. After successfully implementing various cost-cutting programs at T-Home and in the European mobile communications subsidiaries, Mr. Höttges became responsible for the Group-wide Save for Service efficiency enhancement program. From 2005 until being appointed to the Group Board of Management, Mr. Höttges headed European operations as member of the Board of Management, T-Mobile International.

First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg; President of the Senate Peter Tschentscher was born on 20 January 1966 in Bremen. Beginning in 1987, after secondary school and civilian service, he studied medicine with postgraduate studies in molecular biology in Hamburg, which he completed with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1995. This was followed by a Habilitation in 2008. Until 2011, he was a senior physician at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf. Peter Tschentscher joined the SPD as a student. From 2008 to 2011, he was Deputy Chair and Financial Policy Spokesman of the SPD faction in the Hamburg Parliament. In 2011, he was named Minister of Finance in the Hamburg Senate. On 28 March 2018, the Hamburg Parliament elected Peter Tschentscher as the First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. He is the Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany for German-French cultural cooperation with the rank of Federal Minister.

DON'T LET IT GO. GRUDGES CAN BE GOOD FOR YOU! “I realized that my grudges were the very route to positivity and well-being that I was after!”

Write your grudges down so you can remember how you felt, accurately. The act of writing down a grudge — or “constructing a grudge story,” as Hannah calls it — provides space to analyze what happened.

She developed a grading system: The 10 Tenets of the Grudge-fold Path. This is meant to guide you as you develop your grudge, serving to help you process the feelings spurred by the offending incident and to put it into perspective, since all grudges are not equal.

There is a healthy way to process that pettiness, so that one can use it as a learning experience and grow as a person!

The grading system asks questions about the intention of the person who wronged you (definitely bad, possibly bad, not bad); the nature of the situation (very serious, somewhat serious, not very serious); if you were harmed seriously (yes, maybe, no).

Have you ever held a grudge for years? Turns out, grudges can be good, and we should hold onto some of them! We don't often associate the holding of grudges with virtuous people, but 2019 is a new year, new you.

Make a “grudge cabinet” where you can file things in and rewrite the story. Part of the process also involves turning your grudges into artifacts and having a place where you can store them. “The more concrete they are, the more they will protect and inspire you,” Hannah said.

Sophie Hannah, who wrote 'How to Hold a Grudge,' loves them. So much so that she holds each of her grudges in a special place, in her 'grudge cabinet,' where she visits them and tends to them.

Here, she suggests stepping away from the grudge — physically putting it into your cabinet — for at least a day.

Then read it over and ask yourself if there's space to bring humour or fun to the story.

A prolific crime novelist, Hannah, who is not a psychologist, used her personal experience to write this book.

Rewrite the narrative.

Here is her system of enlightened grudge keeping to process your pettiness.

Redefine the word “grudge” as an experience to learn from.

Hannah isn't generally in the habit of redefining words that are in the dictionary. “But there's no dictionary definition I can find that doesn't describe a grudge as a negative feeling, or a collection of negative feelings,” she said.

The crucial difference in the way Hannah views grudges is that she believes a grudge is not a feeling. Rather, it's a story that one can learn and benefit from. “ Not everyone is a grudge person.

Now that we've established that grudges can be good in your self-preservation, how will you know if you're a person who can have some grudges? If you're a person who analyzes behaviour in order to construct a narrative to explain and compartmentalize it, you're likely to be a successful grudge holder. Those who are detail oriented, too, are likely to excel at grudges.

Check in: “If I could rewrite this story changing only my behaviour, what would I change?” Compare the two versions and ask if the negative feelings you're experiencing result from frustration about not being able to change the past, or anger because you wish you had acted differently.

Use your grudge stories to forgive and make you a better person.

Like a set of resolutions or goals, grudge stories can be motivating. They can inspire us by defining values that are important to us; if, for example, someone is very rude and you form a grudge about that behaviour, it may inspire you to be more courteous.

Grudges can also encourage you to be more forgiving.

Validating negative feelings by acknowledging them is a way to keep the negativity from calcifying.

Constructing a grudge also gives us agency. Instead of feeling like you're a person to whom things happen and are done, you may become an active participant in the situation. Happy grudging!

Do yourself a favour by doing favours for others “Why should I go out of my way for someone else, when it's not part of my job and I'm not getting anything in return?”. What they don't realise is that the simple act of doing something for someone else is tremendously beneficial.

How doing favours for other people boosts your happiness and success. How can you be a thoughtful yet efficient favour-giver?

When you do someone a favour, three things happen: 1. You feel good that you're able to help the person 2. The person becomes much more likely to help you and others at some point in the future 3. You increase your professional influence First, using part of your time, resources or knowledge for someone else's sake actually makes you happier. You may have already experienced this feeling in other situations, be it helping out your elderly neighbours or volunteering your time for a social cause. Generous, selfless people tend to be happier and more fulfilled.

Then, there's the reciprocity effect. If you recommend a colleague for a new project, they'll be more likely to do the same for you and for others. If you're happy to make introductions between your contacts, they'll probably return the favour – often spontaneously and on a larger scale. The more you give, the more you get back.

You derive the maximum internal satisfaction and external influence when you give without expecting anything in return – no strings attached! If you're only doing someone a good turn so they'll be indebted to you, it's likely to backfire. If you do something for another person with the expectation of getting something back in return, you don't even have to say anything, most people will pick up on the vibe and feel uncomfortable about what you've done. This may actually hurt your relationship with the person instead of helping it, and it will almost certainly lower your odds of ever receiving a gift back from someone else.

Here are some suggestions to consider as you try being more generous with favours: 1. Build connect with colleagues Let's say there's a talented colleague who you're eager to know better and team up with for future projects. A simple way of kick-starting a positive equation is to lend a hand with what they're working on right now. Ask if there's anything on their to-do list that you can help with, or send them a resource you know will be valuable. Based on the freshly-created goodwill, you can start to build a strong working relationship.

If you're on the lookout for mentorship, then doing your potential mentor the right favour at the right time is an effective way to catch their attention. It shows that you've done your homework, and that you're willing to go the extra mile.

You might think that only powerful people are in a position to give out favours – but that's not quite true. For example, a tech-savvy newcomer could assist a senior leader in solving an online problem, while a voracious reader could rapidly identify key insights in a dense document. Get creative about the ways in which you can help out people who may be above you in the professional hierarchy.

2. Filter favour-seekers As a leader coping with the inevitable time crunch, you may need to choose who to help. With the rise of online networking, it's no longer unusual to receive tens of requests each week via LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. Favours are

often solicited by people you hardly know – and sometimes by complete strangers. Helping each and every one of them would take up a considerable amount of your time, which you probably can't spare.

In such a situation, prioritise the people who genuinely want and will appreciate your help. When someone asks to be introduced to a person in your network…ask the requester for a one-paragraph summary of his request, so that you can easily forward it to the person he wishes to meet…. Asking the requester for more context behind the introduction will eliminate the 30% of tirekickers just looking to meet with folks, leaving the 70% who actually want to meet your contact for a specific reason.

Similarly, when a person wants feedback on a new idea or project, ask them to explain what exactly they'd like from you. For meeting requests, ask for prereads for the discussion. These steps will help weed out those who aren't really committed.

3. Try the “five-minute favour” When you have a choice about who to work with, you ask for them. They're the people that you trust to be your subordinate or your boss. They just end up with better reputations – and better relationships as well.

To increase your influence without burning out, Professor Grant recommends the “five-minute favour” –Just spend five minutes every day making introductions, sending thank-you notes, or doing anything else you consider to be a favour. This is a great way of regularly helping people within your network, without taking up too much of your time.

Favour-swap session. Give each person a large sheet of paper and ask them to write down a task on which they'd like some extra assistance from their colleagues. Pin up everyone's sheets along the walls, then ask the team to walk around and sign up for tasks they'd like to help out with. After signups, facilitate conversations between favour-seekers and favour-givers to help them move forward in a concrete way. This is a great way of kick-starting a culture of generosity at the workplace.

4. Consider redefining “favours” Corporate leaders need to go beyond quick conversations and superficial assistance at work. They must provide their teams with “deep help”.

Addressing the most important problems often requires more than a quick conversation.

However, many leaders still fear that deep involvement equates to micromanagement. Our findings suggest that leaders can be most effective in offering deep help if they are careful in the ways they talk about the time they spend with those they are helping, and send clear signals that they aren't there to take over the work or to evaluate subordinates.

The vanishing tribe!

I wonder what happened to the "Seenu Mamas", "Venka Chikkappas", "Kamalu atthes" of yore. In family functions and social gatherings, family members and friends would look forward to their company. They were extremely talented, had a great sense of humour and add to that, they had mastered the art of telling jokes! People around them would literally be laughing out loud, rolling on the floor laughing!

Each one of them had a repertoire of jokes and would keep adding more jokes. At the next social gathering, they would engage with those interested to share the jokes. Spending time with such folks would be so much fun and fulfilling.

Cut to the Whatsapp world, each one of us has become a "Seenu mama", a "Venka Chikkappa" or a "Kamalu atthe", although inferior versions of them. In family or social gatherings, everyone has a collection of jokes, no, not in their repertoire but in their smart phones! Everyone wants to show off his/her sense of humour by narrating the jokes that they have received into their Whatsapp groups.

Firstly, the same jokes would have been received by everyone else from other groups and none is interested to listen to the joke. Secondly, jokes "read" from Whatsapp

will not have the same impact as narrated from memory or experience. The attitude of the people at such gatherings is one of, "I have already read/received this joke a hundred times, what's the point in listening to this "joker".

I definitely miss those people who are original and had a great sense of humour and had mastered the art of telling jokes, particularly today, 5th of May, World laughter day!

Rotary Festival Extravaganza Our much anticipated mega event, The Rotary Festival 2019, has arrived!

As we promised last year, this year too our club organized mega event Rotary Festival for the second successful year. Preparations for the Rotary festival started by the end of Feb'19 itself. Rtn. Satish Gosavi, very cool & calm person took responsibility as Chairman of this mega event supported by dashing president Rtn. Vikas & dynamic Rtn. Kaustubh, with Veena Bedekar Project Chair 2 – for this fund raising event of our Rotary Vikas Trust. The event was about Fun, Food, Trade, Education, Entertainment and display of various Art forms.

There were totally 63 stalls. The event started from 10th April to 14th April 2019, everyday between 5 to 10 pm in the evening. The Rotary Festival was inaugurated at the hands of DGN Dr. Sandeep Kadam and chief guest Actress Madhurani Gokhale Prabhulkar. Festival was full of trade, educational & tasty food stalls plus there were entertainment programs on all days, everyday starting from 6 pm and concluding around 9pm. This year almost 15 artists took part to show case their art forms. About 10,000 people visited every day.

Visitors really appreciated the efforts taken by committee and its team.

This was even noticed by reporters of various newspapers! It was great branding of Rotary, we mean it.

Rtn. Abhijit Bhagwat & Anns Nimisha Bhagwat, young enthusiastic couple took entire responsibility of designing all material related to event right from logo within time frame, thanks to both for excellent work. Rtn. Ruia took entire responsibility of printing banners, thanks to Ruia for his timely work. Thanks to Rtn. Prasad Kulkarni, he is from Kalyan club, took responsibility of installation of stalls, mandap, decoration, lighting, major work handled by him, Special thanks to Veena Bedekar for excellent publicity of our festival in various media hats off to both. Rtn Satish, President Vikas & Secretary Kaustubh planned & chalked out the entire festival very well. The chairman took entire responsibility of booking stalls and receipt of payments.

Rtn. Kiran had framed the announcement & recorded too.

It was a great help for publicity. Rtn. Vyankatesh had arranged van for publicity. Few names without them this entire show would not be successful: Special thanks to Rtn. Radhika Gupte Madam who helped us in sponsorship & Rtn. Mukundji who helped us in arranging Entertainment programs & stalls, & team of Rtn. Bharat, Rtn. Manas, Rtn.Abhijit, Rtn. Vivek, Rtn. Nilesh, Rtn Vijay Rtn Mahesh, Rtn Atharva & Rtn. Shrikantji (who had started the enthusiasm with his poem till the end of festival!). The 14

entire team & even Anns Sarita, Swapna,& Siddhi had taken enormous efforts & support for the success of this mega event. 90% stall holders were very happy- they got best response.

Wired expressions organized 5 days events & Hrushikesh had looked after our entire social media during festival.

They have done a good job. Special thanks to both.

Advertisement in Loksatta, Maharashtra Times published on Front Page, Samana, Punya nagari, Mumbai Choufer, Yashobhumi, Karnatak Malla published Rotary Festival ads. Eight prime hoardings during festival could be possible with our main sponsor helped us to reach every corner of Dombivli & beyond.

We felicitated all and gave certificates & trophies as token of love & memory forever.

Kudos to President. Vikas, Secretary Kaustubh, Project Chair Rtn. Satish & Veena for their tremendous efforts in conducting successfully this signature event- Rotary festival. Our PDG Rtn. Dr. Ulhas Kolhatkar had given suggestions last year to improve this event which we implemented in all respects!
