I

t is a great pleasure to welcome you to this winter edition of Assembly Lights, which focuses on the theme ‘Divine elevation’. An elevation is a high place or an altitude that affords a broad overall view. When I visited Chepstow Castle (pictured above), I had a clear view of River Wye and its environs because the Castle was situated on an elevation. Soldiers like to stand on elevations or hills, to gain advantage over oncoming enemies, as they can see the enemies coming from afar. When God lifts you up, he places you in a vantage position. He sets your feet upon a rock and places you to sit among princes.

This issue is unique and varied, with themes spanning spirituality, food, health and relationships. Pastors Victor Ayodele and Bayo Obayemi have written excellent pieces on God’s purpose in divinely uplifting us. Whether you are looking for a hearty meal to enjoy this Christmas or a light finger food to make with the family, Ms Adeyanju & Ejiro Tom-Ezewu have provided perfect recipes for Lasagna and Christmas mince pie. Drs Edward Olaniru and Tom Ezewu revealed the dangers of diabetes and bleeding gums, and what should be done to prevent them. We commend this magazine to you, in many prayers, that it would inspire you to take your place at the top, where God has rightly placed you.

Heavenly Promotion

Dr Tom Ezewu, the Pastor of RCCG Christ Assembly, Bristol writes about what divine elevation entails and what we can do to experience it.

Text: Psalms 75:6-7; 1 Sam. 2:7-8; Matt. 6:33.

D

ivine elevation is a heavenly organised promotion. It is a promotion proceeding from God and it is unusually lovely. Promotion is an upliftment. An elevation from God will promote from the lowest position to the highest position.

1 Samuel 2:7-8 “The Lord maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up. He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes.”

Divine elevation entails promotion from the position of the valley to the mountain top, from a nobody to someone of honour, as in the case of Jabez- 1 Chronicles 4:10.

Divine elevation can be achieved

by waiting on God and by practicing Christian teachings such as holiness, honesty, righteousness and prayering. Job 22:21-30 tells us of the principles God has put in place for man to experience divine elevation. The principles include the following: i. Get to know God ii. Let the peace of God that passes all understanding reign in your heart iii. Demonstrate peaceful living with your neighbours (Matt. 22:39) iv. Learn to obey God’s law and always ensure His words are in you (Joshua 1:8) v. Abide in Him and let Him abide in you (John 15:4) vi. Delight in the Lord vii. Lift your eyes to the Lord, from where your help comes from (Psalm 121:1-2) In accessing divine elevation and getting honour from the Father in heaven, you need to serve Him and follow the precepts of Jesus Christ according to John 12:26. As true believers of Jesus Christ, we should serve Him with our body and our substance (Luke 6:38). We should always perform our vows to Him and offer Him a sacrifice of thanksgiving. A believer is to serve God in truth and in spirit. Romans 12:11 tells us that we are to serve God by

being diligent in service and fervent in spirit. Moreover, Acts 20:19 employ us to serve the Lord with humility while Psalms 2:11 encourages us to serve the Lord with fear. There are evidences from both the Old and New Testament that God is in the business of elevating believers. 1 Samuel 1:4-20 narrates the story of Hannah and her desire to be a mother like her mate Peninnah. Hannah was despised and taunted by her mate until she cried out to her maker, God. The Lord remembered Hannah in 1 Samuel 1:19 and gave her heart’s desire.

Furthermore, in the book of Genesis, God elevated Joseph from the prison to the palace. Jabez, in 1Chronicles 4:9-10, prayed for a change in his situation and God made Him more honourable than his brethren. During divine elevation, there is divine intervention.

Divine intervention is when Heaven abruptly stops or changes a situation for good. The case of Simon Peter in Luke 5:1-11 is a prime example of this.

Finally, divine elevation is tied to your readiness to serve God. Those who are ready to serve Him are the people He will set free.

Elevation through Praise

orship is a natural instinct, simply because we were created by God for the very purpose of worship. A simple definition of worship is to regard with great devotion or to honour. God is the focus of our devotion in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. In Exodus 20:2-3, God says, "I am the LORD your God...You shall have no other gods before me." In Matthew 4:10, Jesus says, "Worship the Lord your God and serve him only." So, worship is not only a natural instinct, it is also a command from God.

The only requirement is to be a child of God. Praise and worship is not music. Therefore, whether you express your worship by singing, playing music, dancing or in some other way, remember you are called to worship God with your every action, everyday of your life. God is holy, loving and worthy of all our worship and devotion. So we are encouraged in Deuteronomy 6:5, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and with all your strength”. In this season, let us worship God in truth and in spirit as it says in John 4:23-24.

A Good Christian Man in Our Contemporary Society A speech delivered by Mr Uwemedimo Jumbo during Men’s Fellowship Breakfast meeting and the Kingdom of God. Ephesians 5:16 “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” We should watch out.

Christian Men Fellowship is the coming together of Christian men for the purpose of encouraging and supporting each other through biblical studies; as well as sharing demonstrable experiences that help to strengthen our faith, beliefs, hopes and aspirations in Christ Jesus in the face of joyful and difficult situations. The strength that we derive fortifies us to present ourselves as excellent teachers, good soldiers of the Lord, good messengers of the Lord, good role models, good ambassadors, good husbands, good fathers, good friends, good neighbours and good citizens of this world. Psalm 133:1 “How good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell together in unity.” Hebrew 10:25 “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is, but exhorting one another and so much the more as ye see the day approaching.”

At times, we allow our personal time to subsume God’s time instead of the opposite; hence the devil uses this as one of the greatest weapons against man. Our present generation seem careless about the rapture, as the human race is much busier than ever before. Who is a good Christian man?

A good Christian man is a person who determines tirelessly to grow under the tenet of God’s commandment and in honesty, respect, dignity and honour, doing good, bearing burdens of others and holds on to moral principles continuously both in relationship with God and personal achievements in Christ Jesus.

Shall we not much more readily be a subjection to the Father of spirits and live?’’ As children, the fear of discipline from our parents no doubt prevented some evil actions.

Love in Marriage

25, Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26, That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28, So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. Ephesians 5:25-28

his Bible passage is applicable to all generations, for the word of God is immutable, the word of God cannot be changed. The specific instruction to the Christian husband is to love his wife as Christ loves the church.

Now, how does Christ love the church?

Christ loves the church SACRIFICIALLY -- To sacrificially give or love is to give up things that are valuable and important to you, the essence of your very life.

Christ loves the church. He gave himself by dying on the cross of Calvary, the King of Kings dying a shameful death and shedding His sinless blood for the church.

It means that the husband should live for his wife, physically, spiritually and emotionally. It is not enough for the husband to provide money and other material things, but he must make himself available in every aspect of life for his

Christ loves the church UNCONDITIONALLY --- He loves without any limitations. His love is eternal hallelujah! He was determined to present Himself a glorious church. Ephesians 5:27.

The husband must love his wife unconditionally to be able to bring out the very best God has deposited in her, because she is a garden that you, her husband needs to cultivate to bring out the wife you really desire; to pray, teach her, so that you can present her to Christ without spot and wrinkle. To do this successfully, the husband must be matured physically, emotionally and spiritually. I know most women pray more than their husbands for the family, the more reason why the man should pray very well for his wife so that she can be replenished.

give honour to your wife, protect her because she is delicate and it is very important to love her absolutely and more importantly be faithful to her so that your prayers are not hindered. Husbands love your wives and do not be bitter towards them. Colossians 3:19.

3) Your tongue, sister... Don't underestimate the power of that little member of your body - the TONGUE. James 3:5-6. What do you use it for, to gossip, backbiting or cursing?

The Bible in Psalm 34:13 says keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Let us bridle our tongue with the help of the Holy Spirit so that we will not bring God's judgement suddenly and shorten our lives.

Use your tongue to build your husband, children and your life in the place of prayers and positive pronouncement. Use it to speak life into every deadness around you, use it to bless and to praise God. Lastly, there are great clouds of witnesses in our children, youths around us watching and forming lasting opinions on love, commitment and marriage based on what they see us do, because we are like open Bibles they read each day. My prayer is that we will not disappoint God in Jesus name.

od is the only one that has divine attributes to perform and enforce wonders at any given situation He wishes.

Why? It is because Luke 1:37 says “for with God nothing shall be impossible.” In fact, wonders are one of His products enclosed in divine elevation. Generally, divine elevation could mean that the sun shall rise again Matthew 5:16; God’s urgent attention Mark 10:48-49; Bringing back laughter to the sorrowful 1 Samuel 2:1-4; Creating sudden turn around 2 Kings 6:2431 and 1 Kings 7:1-20; Help to the hopeless Psalm 121:1-2; Divine interference Luke 5:1-10; and God of more than enough Matthew 8:1-4 etc.

Some of the showcases of God to perform His divine elevation:

Divine elevation is a wonder of sunrise. When the sun rises, it means a new dawn, the beginning of a new day. When the sun rises, darkness disappears and light comes in! So, wonders mean a transition from hopelessness to hope, from disgrace to grace, from shame to glory and from failure to success. By the power of God, your sun shall rise again. Acts 3 tells us the story of the lame man at the beautiful gate, verses 9 and 10 says that people saw Him walking and praising the Lord and knew it was the same beggar they had always seen at the gate. Your case is not as bad as Lazarus’, who died, buried and was stinking. If God’s wonders could turn around his situation, if God could visit a dead man and give Him a new beginning, He will surely give you a new beginning today. It does not matter if men have closed your file, but if God declares it open, you will surely be elevated from your present situation to a glorious level of life, John 11:1-26.

Divine elevation can also be a wonder of healing, Matthew 8:1-4.

Sickness can make someone to be restless, hopeless, devastated and distracted. This leper met Jesus the Creator of Wonders and got healed immediately. Remember, it was a taboo for a leper to be touched, but Jesus broke the protocol to give him divine elevation. God will set aside every protocol of hindrances and make you a candidate for His divine elevation, because His name can do anything good you can ever imagine, Philippians 2:9.

Why would Jesus be so willing and eager to heal as He did here? a.

It brings glory to His nameIsaiah 48:11 b.

Healing is a part of the mandate, the reason why He came – Acts 10:38; 1 John 3:8.

Laughter to the sorrowful is one of the ways God showcases His divine elevation to His children. Psalm 30:5. In Genesis 21:1-7, Sarah said “God has made me to laugh and all who hear will laugh with me.” Remember the story of the laughter began in Genesis 18:1-14, when the angel of the Lord visited her household, and according to the promise of God, she was made to laugh, no wonder the name of her son, Isaac was laughter. God will make you to laugh throughout this year in Jesus name.

When and how does God makes you laugh? a.

God makes you to laugh when you get an unexpected divine visitation that gives you an elevation. John 5:2-9, tells us of the story of the pool of Bethesda and the multitude of sick people. How God personally attended to a man that was sick for 38 years and gave Him a laughter that lasted throughout his years and he got elevated from a chronic sickness to a marketer of Jesus (witness) b. God makes you laugh when He accepts your offering; for acceptance of your offering brings His wonders of divine elevation to your life. In Genesis 4:3-5, where God accepted the offering of Abel and rejected that of Cain. The offering of Solomon God accepted and he received the divine elevation of God for unprecedented promotion among the kings of his time. 2 Chronicles 1:6-15. c. God makes you laugh when the God of wonders decides to thank you. In Luke 5:1-14, when He borrowed the boat of Peter, to preach from the boat, after which He turned his earlier failure to suc-

cess by allowing him to catch more than enough fish. Not only did God make him to laugh, but Peter was divinely elevated from a position of catching fish to a catcher of men. Luke 5:10.

Moreover, as wonderful as God is, He does bestow His divine elevation not only on individuals but also on a city. 2 Kings 6:24-31, tells us how Samaria was besieged by Syrians and so they could not access fresh food supplies. As a result, the famine was rife to the point that Israelites began to eat unclean animals and practice cannibalism.

But suddenly, God decided to give divine elevation to Samaria by executing His judgement of wonders upon them. We saw this sudden turn round in 2 Kings 7:1-20.

However, from this event, we learn that no matter how terrible a famine (situation) is, it can be reversed within 24 hours. When a situation gets to an unbelievable level of severity, know that a turnaround is just around the corner. The city of Samaria experienced divine elevation from a state of famine to a state of having more than enough 2 Kings 7:1. The famine you are experiencing shall end suddenly and its sign shall be eliminated in Jesus name.

Moreover, the divine elevation that makes wonders possible can come upon you through help. The help here is the one that comes from the most high – Psalm 121:1-2, “I will lift up mine eyes to the hill from whence cometh my help.” Where your help cometh will determine how divine your elevation will be.

The question is: Where is your real help coming from? a.

Help that comes from God who does not change Hebrews 13:8, but vain is the help that comes from men.

b.

He is always willing and present to help – Psalm 46:1 c.

There is help for the sick – Exodus 15:26. He has all power to help against our sickness, Matthew 8:1-3 – He is always ready to help even during an unexpected situation, Mark 10:46-52 – He can defy all our antagonists to help us. d.

Help is on the way for the barren – John 15:1-5. Jesus Christ is the fruitful vine, if you abide in Him, you become a fruitful vine, Genesis 18:1-14. Abraham and Sarah didn’t know that they could be fruitful after they had waited for 25 years. They waited in front of their tend and help from God located them. Help will locate you today in Jesus name. But wait for God for help – Isaiah 40:31. e.

Help is coming on the way for a failure – Philippians 4:13 says “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” You might have failed several times but God will help you from that level of failure to success.

Other examples abound in Scriptures of men and women who got their divine elevation. The one which stood out was the case of dry bones in Ezek. 37:1-15, where God divinely elevated the valley of dry bones to become a great army.

In the name of Jesus Christ, every area in which the devil has affected your life, the king of glory will step in and give you divine elevation, because with God nothing shall be impossible.

In conclusion, who can then experience divine elevation? They must be those who have a humble spirit Pro. 16:19, the obedient – Col. 3:20, John 2:1-5, Mal. 3:8-11, the worshippers through thanksgiving – Eph. 5:20, the witnesses of Jesus Christ – Pro. 11:30. Finally, the generous (God’s treasurers), will experience divine elevation.

Food Lasagna

L

asagna is one of the oldest types of pasta that can be made with various combinations of cheese, meats, and vegetables, with garlic onions or wine as flavour.

Ingredients 750g lean beef mince, 1 tomato sauce / plum tomato, 1/2 tablespoon of grinded pepper, 1 chopped onion, Nutmeg, Salt, Knorr cube, 300g fresh pack lasagne sheets, 125g ball mozzarella or grated Cheddar cheese, olive oil.

Any other seasoning of your choice Method of preparation 1- To make the meat sauce. Heat the oil in a frying pan, then cook the beef in two batches for about 10 mins until browned all over.

2 - Pour over the chopped onion, plum tomato and add the nutmeg, then all other seasoning to taste, ie salt, knorr, grind pepper and others. Bring up to the boil, then simmer for 30 mins until the sauce looks rich.

3 - Preheat oven to 160 °C/gas.

To assemble lasagne, lightly oil an ovenproof serving dish. Spoon over a third of the minced meat sauce, then some of the cheese, then cover with lasagne sheets.

Repeat until you have 3 layers of pasta, making sure you can’t see any pasta poking through.

4 - Tear the mozzarella/cheddar into thin strips, then scatter over the top. Bake for 45 mins until the top is bubbling and lightly browned.

Christmas Mince Pies

There is nothing like a time of festivities to bring friends and families together. Whether you’re making it for the first time or simply want to try something new, this mince pie recipe is guaranteed to be fun in preparing and enjoyable when sharing.

Ingredients 75g soft dark brown sugar, 4 tablespoons red grape juice, 150g fresh cranberries, 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon mixed spice, 2 packed tablespoons raisins, sultanas, or currants, 2 packed tablespoons dried cranberries, Zest and juice of 1 clementine, 1/4 tsp vanilla extract, honey to taste, little icing sugar, for dusting.

For the pastry 375g plain flour, 260g unsalted butter, softened, 125g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling, 1 large egg, 1 beaten egg for glazing Method of Preparation 1- Place the flour and butter in a bowl and rub together to a crumb consistency. Add the sugar and the egg, and mix together. Tip

out onto a lightly floured surface and fold until the pastry comes together, be careful not to over mix.

Wrap the pastry in cling film and chill for 10 mins.

2-In a small saucepan over a medium heat, dissolve the brown sugar into the grape juice. Add the fresh cranberries, cinnamon, mixed spice, all of the dried fruits, and the zest and juice of the clementine. Bring to a moderate simmer and cook for 10 minutes, stirring and pressing gently until the fresh cranberries have burst and the mixture is a fragrant, thick, coarse paste with only a little liquid left.

Off the heat, stir in the vanilla extract. Taste the mincemeat; if it is not sweet enough, mix in honey by the spoonful and taste until it’s just right to you.

3- Roll out the pastry to 3mm thick. Using a round cutter, cut out 16 bases and place them into muffin trays. Put 11⁄2 tbsp mincemeat mixture into each. Brush the edge of each pie with a little beaten egg. Re-roll out the pastry to cut 7cm lids and press them on top to seal. Glaze with the rest of the egg, sprinkle with caster sugar, then make a small cut in the tops Bake mince pies for 20- 35 mins until golden brown. Leave to cool before releasing them from the muffin trays and dusting with icing sugar.

What You Should Know about Diabetes In the previous edition of Assembly Lights, Dr Setor Kunutsor discussed heart problems and how to prevent them. In this edition, I will be discussing diabetes, another silent killer. Diabetes was first recognised by the ancient Egyptians around 1500 BC as a rare disorder where those affected urinate excessively and suffer from weight loss. From a rare disease in the Middle Ages, diabetes is now a global epidemic, with about 415 million people currently living with the disease, and this is predicted to rise beyond 642 million by 2040, indicating that one person in ten will have diabetes if the current trend is allowed to continue. There are many types of diabetes but one thing that is common to all of them is the presence of persistently elevated blood glucose. The commonest type of diabetes (type 2 diabetes, which I will be focusing on) is mainly due to insufficient production or decreased effectiveness of a hormone called insulin. After eating, food is broken down to small nutrients such as glucose, which is transported to the blood stream. It is not needed in the blood, but is required by the brain, muscles and other organs to provide energy for thinking, walking, running and so on. Glucose enters these organs

via ‘doors’ present on their surfaces, and these doors are shut at all times in some organs. Insulin acts as the ‘key’ that unlocks the doors to allow the entry of sugar. In diabetes, these keys may be insufficient, or they are sufficient but are worn out and no longer work properly, or there may be no keys at all. As a result, glucose begins to build up in the blood stream and since it is not taken up by cells such as those in muscle for energy, it leads to excessive tiredness, high blood sugar, and excess glucose is lost in urine leading to increased thirst, etc. If this persists for a long time, the high blood glucose are taken up by the brain cells, eyes, kidney and nerves causing severe damage to tiny blood vessels in those organs. This is why diabetes is one of the leading causes of blindness, memory loss, kidney failure and nerve damage.

How can you predict whether someone will have diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is mainly driven by excess energy balance. Aside age, family history and ethnicity, obesity is the most important predictor of diabetes. You are obese if when you divide your weight in Kg by the square of your height in metres, you obtain a value of 30 and above. A build up of fat around the waist or abdomen, commonly referred to as pot-belly, could also increase the chances of developing diabetes. Excess fat is mainly due to eating more than is

necessary i.e eating a large portion of meal without adequate exercise.

Most of these meals, especially the typical African food of pounded yam, rice and eba are high in calories. They are good for people involved in energy-consuming jobs such as manual farming but it is necessary to reduce portion size if your job is sedentary, as you may not have the opportunity to burn off the excess calories.

Moreover, an area of concern I would like to raise with parents is the chances that they may be predisposing their kids to diabetes when they become adult. Let me explain. Most parents give carbonated drinks and high calorie snacks to their kids as treats on a daily basis. A UK Diet and Nutrition Survey showed that majority of young people aged 4 and 18y consumed a lot of chocolate and carbonated soft drinks daily while eating less fruit or no leafy vegetable at all. The result is that kids become overweight or obese, and this can have severe health and emotional consequences especially if the child becomes an obese adult. I know this may be tough, but encourage your little ones to eat fruits and vegetables.

Ethnicity is another risk factor.

In England, the risk of diabetes is higher in people of African or Asian ancestry compared with the general population.

Can type 2 diabetes be prevented?

The danger of diabetes is increased when there is inactivity combined with not eating healthy, nutritious food. Lifestyle changes such as weight loss, calorie restriction and exercise, are therefore recommended to reduce the incidence of diabetes. It is recommended that people exercise for about 30 mins five times a week while others have interpreted this to mean taking about 10,000 steps daily (some phone apps can help you track your steps).

I’d like to summarise by encouraging you to: i. Maintain a healthy weight. ii. Eat balanced diet rich in fibre, vegetables, fruits, protein and less carbs. iii. Beware of the sugar and salt contents of purchased foods. For instance, the recommended daily intake of sugar for people aged 11 years and above is 7.5 teaspoons while a 500ml bottle of coke contains 13 teaspoons of sugar. Studies have shown that taking two fizzy drinks a day, even the diet version, could double your risk of diabetes. Eat less salt and sugar. iv. Exercise regularly. If you cannot go to the gym, go for a run. If you cannot run, take a walk. If you cannot walk, shake your body or dance. Just make sure you are not sitting down all day! Be active. v. Sleep well. Avoid constant night shifts if you can.

Finally, look after yourself and take care of your body, it is the Lord’s temple!

Prevention can be broken into 3 simple steps focusing on oral hygiene:

Bleeding gums, otherwise called gingival bleeding is a vital indicator of disease either within the mouth, as in the case of gum disease, or a disease within the body.

Gingivitis (bleeding gum) is an inflammation of the gingivae (gum) without complete destruction of other tissues supporting the teeth.

When the cause of bleeding gum is localised to the mouth, it is a sign of chronic gingivitis (swelling of the gum) or ulcerative gingivitis (sore in the gum).

This write-up focuses on localised causes of bleeding gum (gingivitis). Localised causes can be due to increased number of certain bacteria. It is important to say that the mouth has its own natural bacteria. However, an abnormal increase in the population of certain bacteria in the mouth is responsible for the inflammation and swelling of the gum. Simply because the bacteria produce toxins that cause the gum to swell, become red and bleed easily.

Step 1: Effective brushing of teeth You should brush from the direction of the gum to teeth. Avoid brushing horizontally so you don’t push food particles inbetween the teeth.

The main causes of long term swelling of the gum include: 1. Poor tooth-brushing technique 2. Poor oral hygiene 3. Smoking 4. High levels of stress Other factors that may contribute to long term gum swelling include: 1. Pregnancy 2. Down’s syndrome 3. Poorly managed diabetes.

4. Use of some medications such as anti-hypertensive medications

Step 2: Use the appropriate toothbrush Children should use toothbrushes that have soft bristles to avoid damage to the gum Adults should use toothbrushes with soft or medium because hard toothbrushes are too stiff– just like a broom with steel wire bristles!

Yes, they can get your teeth clean.

But they can also do damage to the enamel, root surfaces and gum tissue.

Endeavour to use fluoride-containing toothpaste when brushing.

Mouthwash can be used to maintain good oral health but DO NOT USE mouthwash and toothpaste together at the same time.

Dental floss is also good option to remove food particles from the mouth and in-between the teeth.

Adults and children should endeavour to brush at least twice a day, especially at night before bed.

Also, endeavour to change your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months.

Step 3: Dental check-up Have regular dental check-ups and speak to your dentist about any irregularities you may have noticed

Prevention and treatment The treatment of bleeding gum should be directed towards the cause of the bleeding gum.

Is my name in this book of life here? Tell me is my name in this book of life? Is my name in this book of life here? Unforgiveness lurks within your heart. Some folks that you will never let go. Little foxes and secret faults Will spring surprises on that final day. Oh oh oh... So much for this wonder brother. What about you? What about me? Let him who thinks that he stands, Let him take heed lest he falls. Only the pure in heart will see Jesus. Those whose garment glow with purity. Is your name in that book of life?
