Brother John Delavan was many things to many people. To one individual, he was a teacher that gave him the skills to provide for his family and to create beautiful works of art. Many years ago Loren Feldman went to our Brother John and asked him to teach him to make knives as he had seen John working on many knives over the years. John jumped at the chance and worked with him for many hours teaching him the finer points of knife making. Delevan went so far as to give Loren his knife making equipment so that he could continue to hone his craft. Loren took the equipment home and started a new career which would take him places he would have never dreamt.

Fast forward to know and Loren Feldman produces some of the finest knives in the world.

Not only are they beautiful works of art, but they are made from some of the rarest items on earth. Museum quality dinosaur bones, rare gems, and even meteorites have been used in the making of some of his creations.

Gila Valley Lodge No. 9 reached out to Feldman Custom knives and obtained one of his finest works, an American Flag themed knife that will surely be the jewel of your collection.

He started with a Carbon Damascus Steel blade, known for its strength and beauty and used for the finest of knives. The blade has an American Flag done with mosaic Damascus by famous artist Doug Ponizo from Wisconsin.

Doug Ponzio has been Making Damascus Steel in his signature style for well over 20 years. He does not just make Damascus steel, he makes amazing Mosaic Damascus steel also known as Pattern Damascus Steel. Doug is an early riser and in his shop every day, creating one of a kind works of amazing art. Doug Ponzio Mosaic pattern welded Steel is mostly sought after for knife making. Some recent events have caused me to reflect on leadership. What makes a great leader? Is it simply a natural character trait or can it be taught? If it can be taught, how and to whom? How important is good leadership?

you start early, young men and women tend to echo the behavior of the adults they admire. If you are fortunate to be raised under the tutelage of someone with leadership abilities, whether it be a parent, coach, or teacher, then you might be likely exhibit leadership potential also. SomeThat last question is the easiest to answer for me. Simply times opportunity itself is it's own best teacher. Everyone at put its importance is critical to every part of existence. It one point or another has been presented with a challenge may be possible to survive without it but I think it's safe to say that without leadership nothing thrives. No business, no that you can rise to and succeed or fail, team, no student, no child, no country or civilization and certainly no lodge will ever find themselves flourishing with- learn from. It is why I am here today. I was presented with the challenge of presiding over the lodge and I stepped up to it despite some serious fears, and in doing so I took a giant step towards becoming a leader and becoming a better man.

I am happy I have not had to walk this journey alone. Although there is plenty of challenges ahead that I'll have the opportunity to rise to, I'm blessed with no shortage of these wise men to look to and learn from. If we all work together I have no doubt that Gila Valley will be well known for the quality of leaders in our ranks.

I challenge you to look inside yourself and improve your leadership qualities, to learn new things, and to convince the world that on becoming a Master Mason you have become a better person. Masonry is here to improve oneself, let’s do it together!

Brethren, Summer time vacations and play time has come to a close and it is time to resume our Masonic Labors. Not all Lodges go dark in the July and August in fact around half, or 26 Lodges meet year-round, and 34 Lodges go dark for one or two months a year.

That being said, I am pleased to see our Lodges in Arizona have been active with degree work and social events throughout the Summer months. The outdoor degrees at Fain Ranch and Escapule Ranch were well attended by Brothers from all corners of the State. The social events that have been posted on social media appear to be enjoyed by those in attendance.

Also, the involvement in community activities through support and participation by our Masonic Brothers has been well received. These activities are what keeps us connected with each other and relevant in our communities.

Now that all the Arizona Lodges are back to Labor let’s step up the support and visitation with our Brethren withersoever dispersed around Arizona. Remember, “harmony being the strength and support of all societies, especially of ours”.

Yes, that is the scuttlebutt, there are enough Jeep owners at Gila Valley that initial talks are in the works to form a club and start exploring the trails. No word from the powers that be on whether those with 4X4’s not of the Jeep persuasion will be allowed to tag along. First planned trips will be occurring soon so reach out now.

We had a good meeting on Saturday, September 14 especially the reception of the Most Excellent Grand High Priest of Arizona, MEC William Greenan. Also, MEC Paul Dore our Grand Treasurer and three appointed companions, Ed Fox, Mark Nielsen and Forrest Hammer.

I hope all of us are studying the parts assigned for the Mark Master degree as we have a practice scheduled for October 12. Ritual proficiency is my goal for the year and it is most important when conferring the Mark Master on potential Companions. I would also stress the desire to be able to open Globe Chapter No. 7 Royal Arch Masons without the aid of ritual books. This will not happen overnight but remember that Time, Patience and Perseverance will accomplish all things.

Let’s have a good turnout at the 4 Corners Festival in Winslow on October 5 for the Dewey Jefferson and Lee Apger, the two Brothers we elected to become Companions of Globe Chapter No. 7.

Gila Valley Lodge No. 9 decided upon Usery Mountain Gun Range for a pleasant day of target shooing. A good time was had by all that attended! Looking forward to competing in the all Pinal County Lodge Shooting competition! Looks like Gila Valley should once again be the favorite to bring home the Championship!

He was a Mason and a Shriner who would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. I also mentioned that it feels good to help others in need when I can.

There are a lot of people who look at motorcycle riders as bad people because we ride motorcycles and wear leathers. What those people do not realize is just how charitable “bikers” are. The riders I know ride so they can give back to the community and help others in need. I have been asked a few times why I ride with the groups I ride with. The answer is easy…I ride with them because the money we raise from these rides goes to charitable organizations. We ride, generate money, and have a great time doing it. Then we give all that money away to help others.

Who wouldn’t enjoy that?

Many people have been there and many want to get there and it is one of the most powerful and one of the most intimidating. The seat I am talking about is the Worshipful Masters station in lodge. After having had the opportunity to sit up there myself and confer a degree. I will give you all a little inside scoop here, it was a one of a kind experience. When you are there you are in charge, this goes without saying. But

that everyone else in the process is good to go. Now I am not saying that sitting in the west, south or even the Junior Stewards chairs are easier or more difficult they just have a different feeling than the WM. When I was sitting up in the east one of the feelings I got was a sense of excitement, as well as a feeling of confidence, and a little bit of fear.

Now many will say, well what are you afraid of everyone there is there to support the candidate and each other in everything that you do for the lodge.

This is true however not wanting to screw things up and make people disappointed also comes into play. So your pride as an individual start’s to come into the mix. But once you start going through the opening and proceed through the degree even the smallest of mistakes start to roll away and you begin to roll with the flow of what is going on and start to worry less about whether you are doing well or poor but more focused on is the candidate getting the best possible experience and how will he remember his experience.

This is a mindset that needs to be promoted within the fraternity. It may already be but for me it is the mindset that I need to start using more often. Remembering that even though many of us may struggle with our work the most important thing when all is said and done is we are always working on becoming better men than what we were yesterday.

So if you are ever thinking oh I will never be able to sit in the east, then take the time to try and memorize a degree or open and close a stated meeting because it is an experience that it is a different feeling than anything that I have ever done can become addicting. Pete Gabriel fully absorbed the frontier ethic of hard drinking, hard work and Pete Gabriel rested his lean frame against the mahogany bar self-redress with a Colt revolver. of John Keating’s Tunnel Saloon, nervously fingering the .45 Colt tucked into his waistband. His wary eyes darted repeatedly to the saloon’s batwing doors. It was the evening of May 31, 1888, in Florence, Arizona Territory. Gabriel, once the county sheriff, knew that Joe Phy, his former deputy and bitter enemy, was looking to kill him. Long years of a rough-and-tumble existence on the frontier, tinged with many close brushes with death, had brought the veteran lawman to the brink of the most dangerous encounter of his adventurous career. What was about to happen would not have surprised anyone who knew his life story.

John Peter Gabriel was born on November 17, 1838, in Kruft, Prussia (present-day Germany), the fourth of six children. When the boy was 9, his parents emigrated to the United States, settling with their brood in Wisconsin. Two years later, Pete’s father died, and his mother was unable to feed her little ones. Prominent attorney and politician Ninian E. Whiteside kindly took in Pete, but Whiteside soon got the itch to join the California Gold Rush. So, Whiteside, wife Caroline, their children and Pete packed up and crossed the Great Plains by covered wagon. On this dangerous trip young Pete Gabriel began to gain the skills in horsemanship, mule skinning, scouting, hunting, trail breaking and marksmanship that would serve him well as an adult.

Once in California, Whiteside settled at Parks Bar, 18 miles above Marysville on the Yuba River. Marysville, then gateway to the northern mines, was a rowdy, violent new city, and Pete Gabriel grappled to maturity there and in the rough-and-tumble mining camps of Yuba County. In those days of wild, masculine society, rudimentary government and scant law enforcement, all men were expected to “kill

Ninian Whiteside became a judge and well-known politician in Marysville and Sacramento. In 1856, when Pete was 17, a daring exploit demonstrated the steely nerve that would mark his life. One night Caroline Whiteside, pregnant with her fifth child, went into labor, and Pete volunteered to fetch a doctor. The raging Yuba was seemingly impassable, but mounting his horse, Pete managed to ford the swirling current. Riding hard to the doctor’s home, he soon arrived back at the riverbank across from the Whiteside place. Dismounting, Pete had the doctor climb into his saddle, then plunged into the torrent on foot, leading physician and horse across the Yuba. The healthy newborn, Bolin J. Whiteside, would grow up idolizing Pete Gabriel.

By 1859 young Pete had struck off on his own. He crossed the Sierra Nevada and worked for the famed Colonel Frederick West Lander, superintendent of the main overland wagon route. Pete probably helped build the Honey Lake Wagon Road, the last and westernmost portion of the road from Colorado Territory. He gained valuable experience,

Gabriel landed employment as a mule skinner and hunter under Josiah D. Whitney, leader of the first comprehensive geologic survey of California. One of the surveyors described Gabriel as “a capitol fellow in his line—young, game, posted as to mules, can tell a story, sing a song, shoot rabbits (and dress, cook and eat them)—a most valuable man.”

Pete stayed with the survey party a year, then joined the Idaho gold rush. He prospected, served for a time as a deputy sheriff and married Marie Rinehart in May 1864. By 1870 Pete, his wife and young daughter had settled near Prescott, Arizona Territory. Before the year was out, he would survive his first shooting incident.

On Christmas night in 1870, Gabriel was at a saloon in Kirkland Valley, 26 miles southwest of Prescott. He and a gambler named Boyce were drinking and playing poker. Gabriel spotted Boyce dealing from the bottom of the deck and ordered him to “desist and play fairly.” Then Gabriel drew four jacks, and Boyce claimed Pete was cheating.

According to one account, Boyce tried to grab the pot; in another, he drew a knife on Pete. Gabriel jerked his six-gun and fired three times. One round tore through Boyce’s head, killing him instantly; another struck the thigh of a patron asleep in a corner of the saloon. Gabriel was charged with murder, and the case came to trial in July 1873. A hung jury meant Gabriel faced a retrial.

town (see story in the August 2010 Wild West). Gabriel participated in the manhunt for Vásquez; one outlaw turned informant, but the leader escaped.

On January 12, 1874, Gabriel accompanied Sheriff Rowland and a small posse to the Rancho Potrero Grande near El Monte to evict a band of squatters. As they approached the barricaded house, squatter Bernard Newman opened fire. Gabriel dropped with a perforated lung. Rowland and his men brought the desperately injured deputy to Los Angeles, then returned with a larger force and arrested Newman. Doctors expected Gabriel to die, but the tough frontiersman was not ready to cash in his chips. He was laid up for months, which sidelined him from the continuing manhunt for Vásquez. A posse organized by Rowland finally captured the bandido in May 1874.

In 1875 Gabriel was well enough to return to Prescott and face the pending murder charges. At an October trial, the jury acquitted him on grounds of self-defense. Gabriel then drifted south to Florence, where in November 1878 he won popular election to the office of Pinal County sheriff. In 1880 the 41- year-old sheriff married Carrie Wratten, the 17-year-old daughter of a friend. (Their age difference, coupled with Pete’s heavy drinking and an increasingly violent temper, eventually put an end to that marriage, too.) Gabriel’s popularity with votMeanwhile, the fact Gabriel had been drinking and gamers won him re-election that same year. Johnny Murphy. Gabriel was a key witness when Murphy and fellow gamblers Bill Moyer and Dave Gibson shot down Levy. The three broke jail while awaiting trial. That summer Gabriel played a prominent role in the manhunt for Lafayette Grime and Curtis Hawley, who had robbed a mining company mule train near Globe, killing Wells Fargo messenger Andy Hall and another man. Despite his excellent record as sheriff, Gabriel lost the November election.

He continued to work privately as a lawman. In 1883 he rode with his good friend, famed Tucson Sheriff Bob Paul, in pursuit of the Red Jack Gang, which had robbed a stage and killed Wells Fargo messenger Johnny Collins.

Gabriel held mining claims in Tombstone and in the mountains near Florence. In 1883 he reportedly sold one of his mines for the then-munificent sum of $30,000. A year later he was elected to his third and last two-year term as Pinal County sheriff.

He appointed as deputy 39-year-old Josephus Phy. A miner and freighter, Phy had been an unsuccessful candidate for sheriff in Phoenix in 1872 and later served at times as deputy sheriff of Maricopa County. Phy was veteran of several encounters with Indians and outlaws. He and Gabriel became close companions.

Both men were forceful and had bad tempers, but Gabriel was the better liked of the two. As the editor of the Arizona Weekly Enterprise put it, Gabriel was “popular with the voters in spite of all his faults.” Richard E. Sloan, then district attorney and later governor, described those failings, saying, “[Gabriel] had a reputation for being exceedingly quarrelsome and especially ugly when drinking, which frequently occurred.” Sloan admitted the sheriff “badly scared” him but nonetheless praised his abilities: “Gabriel was the finest pistol shot I have ever known, equaling, I am sure, the best the West ever produced. It was no trick at all

for him to knock over a jackrabbit some 50 yards distant while he sat in a buggy driven at a rapid rate.”

On September 15, 1886, Sheriff Gabriel rode into Florence and learned that desperado and horse thief Ramon Saratega had been terrorizing Bailey Street and threatening to kill a Mexican woman. He turned to his undersheriff, George Evans, and demanded, “What in hell have I an undersheriff for who permits such actions in my absence?”

“Mr. Gabriel,” Evans replied, “I don’t care to come into contact with this fellow, as I might be compelled, in attempting to arrest him, to kill him. Besides, he has often said that he did not fear you and that you could not arrest him.”

“He said that, did he?”

Gabriel retorted angrily.

“Well, we’ll see about that.”

Confronting Saratega on Bailey Street behind J.M. Ochoa’s store, Gabriel ordered the desperado to surrender. Saratega instead put spurs to his horse, at the same time reaching for his sixshooter. Gabriel whipped out his revolver and fired. The heavy pistol ball ripped through the outlaw’s lower back, struck his horse in the back of its head, and animal and rider collapsed into the dusty street. The horse died instantly, Saratega the next morning. If anyone in Arizona Territory doubted Pete Gabriel’s skill with a handgun, that episode dispelled any such doubts.

In the summer of 1886, Gabriel had decided to return to mining and forgo running for sheriff in the fall. Instead, he threw his support behind Joe Phy. Phy’s opponent was Jeremiah Fryer, a popular hotel and livery stable operator. During the campaign, Casa Grande teamster Tom Montgomery claimed that Phy had disparaged Fryer by saying he was “running for sheriff against a scrub.”

When Gabriel upbraided him for the insult, Phy denied making it. On September 25, 10 days after the Saratega shooting, Gabriel, Phy and several friends traveled the 32 miles east from Florence to Casa Grande to confront the teamster. It was evening when they arrived, and the party separated. Phy found the teamster outside the American Hotel and demanded, “Is your name Montgomery?”

Pete’s friends, “It used to make Gabriel furious if he seen Phy and his wife in conversation, even at little social functions.” Once Gabriel was in Sheriff Fryer’s office when he spotted his little daughter outside, passing a note to Phy. Gabriel seized a rifle, but friends restrained him. Phy walked off, oblivious to the danger. The “love note” turned out to be an order for groceries.

On receiving an affirmative reply, Phy yanked his sixshooter and felled the teamster with a heavy blow to the temple. While Montgomery was down, Phy continued to pistol whip him about the head. When Mrs. James Woods

On another occasion, Phy was brooding over his problems at home, when he picked up a shotgun and stepped toward the door. His roommate Pete Brady asked him where he was going, and Phy spat back, “I’m going to kill that bastard!” Brady told him if he did, he could never return home. Phy reconsidered and set down the gun.

In the spring of 1888, Gabriel was spending much of his time at his mine in the Dripping Springs Mountains northeast of Florence.

Meanwhile, Phy announced he would again run for sheriff in the fall. His enemies taunted him by claiming tried to intervene, the enraged deputy took a swing at her.

As Phy dropped into the street, he squeezed off a final shot, gasping, “Oh, my God, I’m down!” Keating and Dave Gibson— the latter of whom had killed Jim Levy—rushed to Phy. Keating asked the obvious: “Are you hurt, Joe?” Phy gasped, “Yes, I am gone.” Gibson reached down to help Phy, saying, “Raise his head.” But Phy did not want Gibson’s help. He swung his knife, cutting the gambler’s leg, and snarled “You murdering son of a bitch!”

A year later Gabriel took part in the manhunt for the Apache Kid, who with three companions had killed a sheriff and a guard taking them to Yuma prison. Gabriel eventually left law enforcement for good to focus on mining. For years he suffered nightmares about the killing of his former friend. “Phy’s death haunted Gabriel the rest of his life,” confirmed one companion. On July 30, 1898, the former lawman died from drinking poisonous water at his mine in the Dripping Springs Mountains.

Pete Gabriel was one of the great lawmen of the Southwest, but he is not remembered for that. Instead, rightly or wrongly, he is known mainly for his role in one of the Old West’s classic gun duels. His remarkable career as a peace officer has all but vanished in that pall of gun smoke at the Tunnel Saloon.

Brethren, I read an article a couple weeks ago that discussed the authors view that Masons could be categorized into seven different categories: Historians, Esoterics, Saplings, Ritualists, Caretakers, Fraternalists, and Ashlars. Many brothers may be a combination of two types and as you would imagine, a Lodge is usually a combination of all seven! His assertion was that the Lodge was and is stronger by having many different types. While it would be an interesting exercise to identify characterizations within our Lodge, I will reserve that for another missive.

It is the Historian in me that I will focus on today:

“This brother knows the names of many past masters who came before. He gets excited talking about the unbroken thread of the Craft through time, and may have his own theories about how it started. Historians care about the institution itself, and help other brothers not to forget where freemasonry came from and what it is about. Historians tend to overlap with caretakers.�

Those that know me, know that I enjoy researching and learning about our History, and the history of Gila Valley more specifically. I feel a connection to our past members when reading about those Masons that have been such an integral part of the Lodge and of the Town we live in.

I promise you that you will find something that will impress you, that will shock you, and perhaps even amazing you! Perhaps it will induce you to get out there in the community and prove to the Town that we still have those movers and shakers within our Lodge!

The Junior Grand Steward of the Grand Lodge of Arizona made his official visit along with a large group of his fellow Yuma Lodge No. 17. WB Michael Dale had some great compliments for the Lodge and brought well wishes from the Grand Master, MWB Greg Vasquez.

Extended Masonic Trivia: Inside the inner sanctum of US presidential power, sits the recycled remains of a British ship, one that we didn't capture and keep as spoils of war, but rescued and returned to England. The timbers of this ship were turned into three desks and one of those, known today as the Resolute Desk, has served several presidents since being gifted to us by Queen Victoria. But how did this all come about?

In 1845, Captain Sir John Franklin set sail for the Canadian north to find the elusive Northwest Passage. The hope was that there was a navigable path from the east and west sides of North America that was safer than the then current passages from the Atlantic to the Pacific: Cape Horn in South America and The Cape of Good Hope at the southern end of Africa.

Franklin took the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror and set sail to complete and utter failure. There aren't many pieces of evidence as to why the expedition failed with all hands lost, but one thing that appears to be consistent is that those bodies found had elevated and reportedly lethal levels of lead. Canned food cans found elsewhere had poor lead soldering that could have contaminated the food.

However, at the time, no one knew what happened and England was keen to find out launching several rescue mis-

sions.

Since the Royal Navy didn't have any ships that were capable of surviving the pack ice and none that could be efficiently refitted for the exploration, merchant ships were purchased including the SS Ptarmigan. After her refit, she was rechristened the HMS Resolute and set sail to find Franklin's lost expedition in 1852 under the general command of Admiral Sir Edward Belcher. Unfortunately, Belcher's expedition was not successful in finding the remains of the Erebus or Terror and his failure cost him four of the five ships sent on the rescue mission.

The good news for Lady Franklin is that a privately funded expedition found the evidence she was looking for and got proof that her husband died in the Arctic.

The Resolute continued to serve the Royal Navy until 1879 when she was salvaged for timbers. When she was returned to England, Queen Victoria had received her and was still queen when the ship was salvaged. The government ordered three desks to be made from the ships timbers with two of the three gifted to recipients in the United States and one, kept by the queen.

We do not ask that from our relationship we shall make money, or further our business interests, or achieve some other form of selfish gain. Our relationship with such a one is its own excuse for being, its own justification, its own reward. All of us know that this Brotherly Love is one of the supreme things without which life is a lonely, unhappy, dreary kind of thing. This is not a hope or a dream, but a fact-as real as day and night, or as the law of gravity.

Freemasonry builds on that fact, takes it for granted, provides opportunities for us to have such fellowship, encourages us to understand it and to practice it, and to make it one of the laws of our existence. It is in short, and in literal truth one of its Principal Tenets.

As a fraternity, we can do better. As individuals we have room to grow. As a Lodge we have an immense opportunity to make a difference. It requires only our willingness to try. I ask you; Are you who you desire to be? Are you allowing yourself to expand and grow? Are you living a life worthy of emulation?

Beyond this, are you serving others so they are able to achieve the same?

Masonry is a unique journey, one that is mired in ups and downs, as any worthwhile effort can be expected to embody.

Don’t be afraid to be uncomfortable. Don’t be afraid to share why and how Masonry makes you better. Embrace the knowledge bestowed upon you.

The past couple of weeks, I have been placed in positions that I am not generally comfortable with. I’ve been face to face talking with men that I’ve never met before, nor have any real connection or commonality with. The Memorial is a central hub connecting Masons to one another, and connecting the Craft to the public, our nation, and our world F o r t h e p a s t d e c a d e , t h e Memorial Association has devoted tremendous energy and resources to the renovation of the Memorial.

Major exhibits have been added. Interiors have been repaired and repainted. Lighting has been updated. But the most considerable work is the top-to-bottom restoration of the building itself—the first such renovation since the Memorial was completed nearly a century ago.

Beginning at the Memorial’s pyramid level, we have begun a multi-year project to perform all needed structural repairs. Stone by stone, are repointing the mortar and protecting the building from water penetration. When completed, the building will be in bet-

On August 30th, 1862, Colonel Horace S. Roberts of the First Michigan Infantry was killed in action at the Second Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) while serving as Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Michigan of the Grand Lodge of Michigan. MWB Roberts is one of three Grand Masters to die in battle, the others are MWB Joseph Warren (killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17th, 1775 while serving as Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts) and MWB John Simpson (killed at the Battle of River Raisin on January 22nd, 1813 while serving as Acting Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky)

In 1959 Winslow Masonic Lodge F&AM #13 conferred a Third Degree with the chairs being filled by the Past Masters of the Lodge. Past Masters came from all over the country, including H.E. Young, who came from Fallbrook, Ca and was Master in 1924 and R.C Kaufman, Master in 1920 of Phoenix. More than 35 Past Masters were present.

In 1965 Ernest McFarland grew Thompson Seedless Grapes on a farm he owned just outside of Town of Florence (Government). While not normally known for it's grape crop, the superintendent of the vineyard, Delbert Lewis described grapes as "a cash crop - if everything goes well". On average they were able to plant 5,000 cuttings in a 10 acre vineyard producing three varieties of table grapes _Thompson Seedless, Cardinal, and exotic. The McFarland Vineyard grew to more than 100 acres. Because they only sold 100 percent top quality grapes (Crews only snip off the most choice grapes) they produced about 125 boxes per acre. Ernest McFarland was a member of Pinal Lodge #30, F&AM and his son-in-law Delbert Lewis is a long time member of Gila Valley No. 9 F & AM Masonic Lodge, serving as Master in 1959 and receiving his 65 year membership pin in 2019

On August 2, 1958 Claude J. Maben was installed as the first master of Tucson's newest Masonic Lodge in the Altan Kol Grotto on 2nd Ave. Maben was a Mechanical Engineer among other vocations over the years, eventually founding the successful Maben Mechanical Contractors of Tucson.

The Lodge was named for Marion McDaniel who was a native of Springdale, Pa and was raised to a Master Mason Jan 8, 1930 at Battle Creek Lodge No. 12. He affiliated with Tucson Lodge No 4 F & A M in 1935 and assisted in the organization of Adobe XLI Masonic Lodge and Aaron Masonic Lodge #49 F&AM. William Townley MacDonald was a very respected mining man from Hayden, Arizona. In 1920 he applied for a new and useful Improvement means for crushing and grinding ore and rock. It was grated as patent No. US1431475A on 10/10/1922. It was one of many patents credited to MacDonald as he was well known not only for his business acumen, but for his ingenuity in the early mining community. In addition to running of the largest Mining Operations in early Pinal and Gila County Arizona he made time to be Master of Winkelman Lodge No. 24 and Grand Master of Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons in Arizona in 1929.

On January 19, 1964 Anderson Cone Webb married Margaret Armer, both were 74 years young. They married at the home of Margaret's son Frank, and AC's Daughter Marian, who had been married to each other for 30 years.

Never too old to find love! AC Webb was a long time Mason, a member of White Mountain Lodge No. 3 F & AM, being raised in 1909 and receiving his 50 year pin in 1959. He passed away in 1972.

George William Lingald was the first ever candidate to be initiated by Pinal Lodge #30, F&AM in 1921 and served the Lodge continuously for the next 43 years, serving as Master in 1925 and Secretary for many years.

He was the first Worthy Patron of Casa Grande Chapter No. 23 Grand Chapter of Arizona - OES in 1923 and 1924. (Serving as Worthy Patron again in 1928 and 1938)

Friday was Tag & Pins at UltraStar Multi-tainment in Maricopa with (2) potentials, Saturday morning met at Pinal Lodge #30 to help the brethren clean the lodge in preparation for re-opening for business after a dark summer and today was an Official Visit at Valley of the Sun Chapter to reclaim our wanted poster and ended the evening with a rainbow and dinner at Red Robin, Yum!

Fantasy football is a game in which the participants serve as General Managers of virtual professional gridiron football teams. The competitors choose team rosters by participating in a draft in which all players of a real football league are available Keep your eyes out for monthly standings!

The Holy Royal Arch is the final degree and the culmination of the Chapter experience for a candidate. The Chapter is the second body of the York Rite of Freemasonry (following the Symbolic or 'Blue' Lodge), though in some Jurisdictions it is considered the completion of the initial three degrees and is part of the regular Craft experience. The Scottish Rite is a Masonic organization that continues a Master Mason's education of the first three degrees. The Scottish Rite is one of several appendant groups of the worldwide fraternity known as Freemasonry. Each Valley has up to four Scottish Rite bodies, and each body confers a set of degrees. The first mention of Moon Lodges can be found in the Cooke Manuscript of 1410, one of the oldest documents belonging to the Masonic Craft. In the U.S., Moon Lodges were first noted in colonial times around 1717 to be operating in Philadelphia, Boston and Tennessee.

There appears to have been approximately 3000 moon lodges in the U.S. at the turn of the last century but by the 1950’s that number had decreased to 500. Today, by last count, there are roughly 129 moon lodges in the U.S. A moon lodge was born out of necessity due to the lack of natural or artificial illumination by which one could travel to and from meetings. During the 18th century, transportation was limited to horseback, horse & buggy, walking and even in some circumstances by boat. There were no paved roads and very few gravel but merely two dirt ruts that would meander through bush and fields rarely in a straight line. With only a candle or coal oil lamp to light the way, a full moon provided welcome companionship for a long and lonely trek. Individuals would travel 810 miles or more and were unable to make the long trip home at night and would be supplied lodging by a fellow brother, leaving after breakfast to return home the next morning.

Gila Valley Lodge No. 9 continues to follow this tradition and is honored to be still one of the remaining “Moon Lodges” in the United States. Our Stated Meetings are the Monday On or Before the Full Moon of the Month, The Lodge also goes “Dark” during the summer months of July and August, where no Stated Meetings are held.
