WOW what a summer we had! RCAW knows how to put on an event or five.
Our Golf Tournament was amazing with perfect weather for our 32 teams, every hole had something cooking, drinking, or games to play and everyone left with a smile. Surrounded by sponsorship banners at the Salmon Derby we had a day on the dock listening to the Billy Shew band as everyone weighed their fish. The RCAW Basic Shelter Project brought a group of roofers together and collectively provided a new roof for a family in Federal Way. On October 21st, we are hosting our 57th annual Membership Dinner with guest speaker, McKay Daniels, Chief Executive Officer of the National Roofing Contractors Association. Join us for a delicious meal and a night of meeting new people. We have also joined forces with the Seattle and Portland Chapters of the National Women in Roofing to produce a day (October 22nd) of socializing and hands-on education. With vibrant speakers and a dynamic environment, focusing on women in all aspects of the roofing industry. Our annual Winter Gala is coming up on December 3rd, get your tickets for a fun night out with a DJ, dessert dash, drinks, photo booth and dancing. Don’t forget we donate to Toys for Tots, please bring an unwrapped toy for a child 2-12 years of age.
As you can see RCAW, happily has been very busy working for you. We appreciate your dedication to attend and/or sponsor all these occasions. Every event provides a productive source of new opportunities. Hearing what other people are doing at their companies can also inspire you to bring new techniques or skills to your job. Whether you work for a small business or a large corporation, your fresh ideas can help you stand out and succeed in your current role. I encourage you to get out and network with other members and our Board of Directors. I hope to see you soon.

“United we stand, divided we fall”. This phrase has been used for thousands of years on the battlefield. Locker rooms have this on the wall as players run out onto the field. Influential leaders around the world have quoted these lines to their citizens. Why? To inspire unity and collaboration so their purpose can be accomplished! So, what does this phrase have to do with the RCAW?
Since our founding in 1965, we have been determined to make a positive impact and elevate the roofing industry to new heights. The core of our efforts is to bring fresh ideas, education, and passion to the range of activities we’re involved in to support the roofing industry in Washington.
So how do we accomplish this???
It all starts with you!
There are numerous reasons to join the RCAW but here are a few that stand out to me.
Advocacy
Group influence, and the power to change an environment is stronger than at the individual level. Associations are the location where individuals organize their resources, plan their strategy, and assign action items. Some thought social media would gradually replace “brick and mortar” associations, but while platforms like Facebook and

Better Jobs
While finding members jobs isn’t expected or common, many associations provide some kind of job seeking assistance as a member benefit. Some host job listings on their main website; others maintain a robust career portal that not only list up-to-the-minute jobs but offer resume critiquing services, interviewing tips, access to career counselors or monthly webinars about presenting yourself better in your job search. Members can also make their own job connections simply by showing up and forging their own connections that lead to a position. Professional associations have long been the type of organization that attract motivated, hard-working, successful industry leaders looking to grow their businesses, so they’re intrinsically a career center even without the digital frills of a career center.
it, professional associations have long been the type of organization that attract motivated, hardworking, successful industry leaders looking to grow their businesses. When an association’s membership boasts these types of professionals, others naturally want to join in hopes of rising to the same level (and beyond). Association affiliation brings an aura of trust, integrity, and reliability to its members. Consider the prestige bestowed upon those who receive the rank of Eagle Scout within the Boy Scouts of America, or the reverence given to academics with a PhD.
As an active member of the RCAW, my number one goal is to help my fellow peers in our industry rise to new levels so they can support and reward themselves and their family, inspire their employees to always perform at their highest level, and most importantly, serve their customers with quality and confidence.
LinkedIn make it easier to recognize connections, they haven’t displaced the power of good oldfashioned face-to-face meetings to make lasting change happen.
Networking
Associations are the original social media network: Meet with like-minded professionals interested in the same issues as you; take in content that enlightens and sometimes entertains; discover connections within your community. Ever notice how meeting face-to-face with a remote-working colleague makes future projects with them run more smoothly? In-person networking is the grease that makes collaboration run better, and associations are a low-pressure forum to grease up.
Access to Resources
No one finishes school, an apprenticeship, or other formal education completely prepared to handle every project that will come their way over the course of a career. But going back to school to learn new skills can be expensive. Associations fill that gap between doing nothing and paying thousands for more higher education. Because they’re a hub for brainpower and funds, associations can produce a variety of educational settings and tools that fit the educational needs of many.
Prestige
Because of their purpose in elevating the standards of an industry and those who work in

Hello,
I’m Jarrod Gaiser with Eagleview and serving as your current RCAW Membership Chair. Many of you may know me as the Regional Sales Manager at Eagleview but did you know, I have been a dedicated RCAW member for 8 years. I am also on my second term with the RCAW Board of Directors, and I am currently your Chairman of Membership. In my travels I get the opportunity to meet and work with Contractors, Distributors, and Manufacturers of building materials and I am often asked why I should be a member of the Roofing Contractors Association of Washington. Here is my response from two unique prospective.
As an Associate Member, Manufacturer, or Distributor, why wouldn’t you want the opportunity to work with all the best contractors in the state. The association provides me with many opportunities to get in front of the contractor members throughout the year. The RCAW holds virtual lunch and learns on a regular basis. The RCAW also holds several large in person events throughout the year ranging from Golf Tournaments, Salmon Derby’s, Trap Shoot Competitions, Holiday Galas, and an Annual Tradeshow, just to name a few.
As a Contractor Member there are so many benefits to joining the RCAW. Let’s face it, you didn’t get into this business because it was easy. Owning your own business and doing things the right way

Whether your company has a single vehicle or several, vehicle graphics can transform them into a cost-effective media asset, powerful enough to help drive awareness, sales and business growth. Vehicle wraps deliver a highly effective way to advertise and helps build credibility for your business.
Vehicle graphics help in opening up a diologue between you and potential clients. Your vehicle is your rolling billboard with a vast potential for new clients as you travel from point A to point B. Vinyl graphics and lettering can make the smallest company look as substantial as any of their competitors.
I use AutoTize to wrap all my fleet vehicles. Fair pricing, great design work, and great to work with. Highly recommend this company.

I hope all our members and prospective members are having a happy and productive summer. We are in the time of year where legislative activity has mostly ceased in our state, however there are still issues to be mindful of as we transition into the second half of 2022.
Despite opposition from RCAW’s lobbyist (IBA), the state legislature passed into law RCW 49.58 (EQUAL PAY AND OPPORTUNITIES ACT). A portion of this law (RCW 49.58.110) has provisions that outline what information employers need to disclose when they “post” or “solicit” advertisements to hire new employees. I would strongly encourage all our members to familiarize themselves with these new requirements as they go into effect on January 1, 2023.
As of May 1st, Labor and Industries (L&I) has also revised their safety requirements for workers exposed to outdoor heat. There are numerous conditions under these revisions including, but not limited to: a requirement to update your company APP to include heat protection provisions, providing employees with sufficient means to reduce body temperature for preventative cooldown, and providing proof of annual training to all employees on symptoms and prevention of heat related illness. Many of you already meet these requirements, but I would encourage all members to re-familiarize themselves with requirements before they receive an unwanted infraction on a technicality.
Fall Protection rules in our state are also constantly under review and subject to change. Most recently, L&I is proposing changes to the threshold heights that dictate what type of safety system can be used (i.e., when working on a low pitch roof, an L&I approved fall prevention system would be required at 6 feet instead of 10 feet). Our state conducts
over 50% more safety inspections than the national average, and it’s imperative that our members stay updated and informed as these changes take place.
Barring a statewide emergency, the next legislation session will take place during the 2nd week of January 2023. During the time leading up to that session, I’d like to challenge all our members to submit one or two legislative issues to RCAW, that are of particular importance to their business. Based on your feedback, RCAW, would like to take one or two of the most popular of these issues and organize a “Hill Day” where a large group of us will head to the capitol building in Olympia, and present our concerns to our prospective legislators. The roofing industry has a strong presence in our state, and we have a real chance to make an impact, but we can’t do it without your feedback, and support. Please email Executive Director, Amanda Fields at Director@RCAW.com your legislative issues.
Finally, if you are not reading the IBA’s monthly small business report, you are missing out on a trove of valuable information that will help you run a safe and successful business. If for some reason you are not receiving the newsletter, please contact RCAW and they will make sure you receive it. I promise, it’s well worth your time.
Wishing you all a safe and happy end of summer and a prosperous fall.

With Summer coming to a close and a new season falling upon us, we enter a time that is historically talked about as being some of the “toughest” months for the roofing industry. In the Fall season we find ourselves at the mercy of hundreds of homeowners who have enjoyed their summer’s out camping, vacationing and away from home. Then they return home from that last trip and suddenly they NEED a new roof before the rain hits! This is all too common in the Pacific Northwest as we are hit hard each year with atmospheric rivers that drench our region, and sometimes our hardworking install crews, too!
Although this season is hard on our crews that are working outside, it can also be a difficult time for our customer service teams who are handling all the internal demands. There is a high volume of calls, dispatching of tarping and repair services, scheduling of new installs, and don’t forget the extra bookkeeping that comes along with the significant increase of service requests. It is difficult for each department in its own form, especially because most businesses are still battling the staffing shortage that has affected the entire world brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic that struck our globe in 2020.
Often because the demand for services becomes so high, there is a high level of stress to complete
these orders in a timely fashion. After all, have you ever been on the receiving end of a phone call from a new homeowner who has water leaking through a light fixture in the ceiling onto their newly remodeled mahogany floors? I have. And in that moment in time, that homeowner’s emergency becomes your priority because you want to provide help in their time of immediate need. This puts an increased stress on office staff as well as service individuals as we are also at the mercy of inclement weather because our employee’s safety is still our #1 priority.
So how do we prevent our staff from feeling the burnout during the rainy season? With so many opportunities available to the work force that are offering extra benefits and incentives such as hiring bonuses, increased vacation time and flexibility to work from home – how do you separate your company from the rest and remind your employees that they are valued by your organization? You have to be different.
We must create a safe place for our employees to speak their minds. It is human nature to desire being heard, recognized, and praised. As leaders, we must take the initiative to have conversations with all employees, even ones who are hesitant to come to us with concerns or suggestions. Being open & honest and remembering to speak human
to human is extremely important. It is universally known that companies with a trusting workplace will perform at higher capacities. When speaking with your staff, encourage their input and feedback and whenever you have the chance - show appreciation and respect.
In creating a safe place for our employees to speak their minds, we must also remember to provide flexibility. No two employees are the same, every family does things a bit differently. Though a large majority of us eat dinner, not all of us eat dinner at the kitchen table with the whole family or at the same hour every night. There are ways we can provide flexibility to each employee without jeopardizing the overall performance of the company. In fact, providing this flexibility to our staff will allow them to feel more appreciated thus creating an atmosphere for everyone to thrive in which subsequently increases production through all departments.
With staffing shortages, high gas prices and the cost of all goods steadily increasing and remaining a major concern – we must show our employees that we are aware and that we genuinely care about their mental health and wellbeing. How do we do that? Pay above average salaries. Money isn’t the only thing that motivates someone to perform well at their job, but it certainly factors in heavily. Paying above average salaries will decrease turnover rates in departments. Keep in mind, there are many awesome candidates in the work force – but there is only so much good talent out there. We must identify and invest in high performers. Although increasing salaries is not the favorite topic of leaders within organizations, it is a critical business decision that will drive your business forward.

RCAW Rainer's Night Recap
Colin Madsen, Tacoma Rainer's Chair
The inaugural 2022 RCAW Tacoma Rainiers Roofing night went off without a hitch. We had beautiful baseball weather, a competitive game, and a great networking atmosphere. It also served as a reminder that it’s ok to break away from the day-to-day stress of work and have a little fun with some family and friends.
RCAW hosted over 65 roofing professionals, families, and friends. We enjoyed an all-inclusive BBQ Buffet, all you can drink water, wine, and beer, and a personal concierge. Laughter and photo flashes lit up every table with big smiles.
The annual Tacoma Rainiers Roofing night is always great opportunity to interact with RCAW staff and meet and discuss current issues with the RCAW Board of Directors. It was a relaxed and positive environment to meet new professionals and reminisce with older ones.
We could not hold these enjoyable networking events without support from our members, we’d like to thank Stoneway Roofing Supply for being one of our 7th Inning Stretch Sponsors. Your contribution made a difference for everyone who attended. Thank you.
Keep your eyes out for the date and time of the 2023 RCAW Tacoma Rainiers Roofing Night. We hope to see you there.
How a New Supply Chain Regulation Will Impact Construction
Trent Cotney, Adams and Reese LLP
As you may have heard, in December 2021, Congress passed the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA), and President Biden signed it into law. Under this new legislation, which went into effect on June 21, 2022, there will be a crackdown on goods produced in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR). In this region, forced labor among the Uyghur people is all too common, and this new law prohibits the resulting goods from entering and being used in U.S. markets.
It is essential to note that the UFLPA pertains to all goods wholly or partially manufactured or mined in that region or by entities connected to forced labor. This specification means that products provided by countries even with indirect connections to forced labor are banned from entering the United States.
What Products Are Affected
According to the UFLPA, several product categories are linked to forced labor. These include clothing and textiles, hair products, computer parts and electronics, rail transportation equipment, and silica-based products. The four that the UFLPA is most focused on are the following:
• Cotton and products made from cotton
• Apparel
• Tomato and tomato-based items
• Silica-based products
The most concerning for the construction industry are silica-based materials (including polysilicon).
As you know, silica is a critical component of tiles, concrete, glass, sealants, ceramics, mortar, bricks, and other construction staples. Silica is also a key component of solar panels.
In the Strategy to Prevent the Importation of Goods Mined, Produced, or Manufactured with Forced Labor in the People’s Republic of China, published by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, there are comprehensive lists of manufacturers connected to forced labor and the materials they produce. Those that make silica-based items and solar-grade polysilicon are included.
What It Means for Suppliers and Contractors
Now that the UFLPA is in effect, importers are under pressure to track where their materials come from and what entities have been involved in manufacturing. They must ensure that materials entering the United States have not been produced by companies using forced labor—either in the XUAR or by a company connected to that region. More details can be found in the UFLPA Operational Guidance for Importers, produced by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
To accomplish and document this verification, importers must:
• Maintain comprehensive supply chain and transaction records.
• Create and provide a list of all entities involved
in the production process.
• Provide flow charts that map every step of the material production and identify the regions where all the materials originated. Specifically for polysilicon, this means the location of the quartzite used, the location of the facility used in manufacturing, and the location of any entities that produce downstream goods.
• As necessary, provide evidence that goods were not produced by forced labor.
Importers and contractors should be aware that supplies may be seized or detained if it is difficult to determine if polysilicon was sourced from within the XUAR or outside the region. This process may very well lead to more supply chain delays.
Advice for the Construction Industry
Although the UFLPA went into effect on June 21, it may be months before CBP will have the staff to actively enforce the regulations. However, importers can incur civil penalties for any shipments that enter the United States and later are determined to violate UFLPA.
In addition, while the UFLPA is currently focused on a handful of problematic materials, the reach of the XUAR might be quite broad. Therefore, do not be surprised if the global supply chain is more widely impacted.
For now, importers are advised to undertake increased due diligence in their operations. They should ensure compliance with the UFLPA and guard against doing business with any companies in the XUAR or connected to the region.
In the meantime, contractors must be aware of the UFLPA and be prepared to manage any resulting material delays. They should stay in close contact with their suppliers about this matter and be ready to substitute materials when possible.
If you have questions about how the UFLPA might impact your business, do not hesitate to consult legal counsel. An experienced construction attorney can explain the issue and help protect your company’s interests.

Worker's Compensation Issues & Solutions
Ruth Lewis, Stop Claims
4202 Hoyt Ave. Suite B Everett, WA. 98203 425-954-8865
Have your L&I Premiums increased, and you are no longer receiving refunds from your Retro Group?
Did you know the number of claims filed against a business have no impact on their rates, it’s how those claims are managed? Stop Claims is not a Retro Group and is unlike any other thirdparty administrator. Stop Claims is unique in our strategies and helps businesses like yours with claim cost containment, premium reduction and increased refund potential.
Most workplace injuries are legitimate, but even legitimate claims can take a life of their own. Stop Claims reviews all benefit decisions to ensure that the benefits paid are fair, reasonable, and curative. If the decisions are not appropriate, we actively petition, protest and appeal claim decisions to the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals (BIIA).
Do you have questionable injury claims?
Stop Claims team advocates and represents employers on all Labor & Industries worker’s compensation claims by using effective strategies to manage curative medical treatment, establishing vocational early return to work programs and to take the necessary legal action when required.
Stop Claims employs litigation paralegals who negotiate incorrect decisions made by the department by applying WAC’s and RCW’s to establish a what’s called a prima facie case. All department decisions are accepted until proven otherwise and employers have 60 days to obtain the necessary evidence to overturn them. Sometimes that requires more aggressive measures.
Stop Claims is a licensed private investigation agency. We actively collaborate with employers to preform investigations and surveillance then loop in
the fraud division at Labor & Industries. Our private investigators document activities both with written observations and film and provide detailed reports of their findings. If anyone is falsifying claims, our team will help you get the root of it and bring your company justice. Filing fraud charges with the state enables us to reverse costly claims on the employer’s account and reduce (and sometimes refund) premiums.
Have you received LNI safety citations or violations?
The roofing industry is high risk and an inherent target for safety citations. As a client of Stop Claims, you are represented during inspections. We fight hard against fines that can put hard working companies out of business.
Currently the roofing industry is being targeted by Labor & Industries WISHA & DOSH inspectors and they are very active in the field. This has resulted in investigations, job shutdowns and tens of thousands of dollars in fines from citations and violations. One neighbor complaint resulted in the arrival of an inspector within 2 hours. One worker removes safety glasses, doesn’t have a harness tied off properly or a ladder isn’t 3 feet above the roof line and a WISHA inspector drives by. Even though it was unpreventable misconduct by the employee the employer is saddled with 3 serious level violations and an $18,000 citation.
Stop Claims is very familiar with the requirements necessary to fight these types of citations and have saved our employers thousands of dollars.
Stop Claims is the Employer solution for all matters Labor & Industries, let us advocate for you!

The Benefits of Targeted Display Advertising.
Jacob DeClue, Aletheia Digital
Why is Awareness Important?
In the world of digital marketing, we use something called the marketing funnel. It’s easy to understand how it works, but it is an important idea in marketing, nonetheless. The funnel depicts the journey of the consumer, from learning about a product or service to making the purchase decision.
At the top of the marketing funnel is “Awareness.” A consumer’s entire buying decision will start here. Obviously, they can’t purchase your service if they don’t know about it, so building awareness of your business is imperative. As the consumer becomes more and more aware of your services, they may start to build interest. Over time, with enough persistence on the part of the advertiser, the consumer will (ideally) work their way down the funnel and eventually come to the purchase decision.
Building awareness is just the start of what can sometimes be a lengthy process – especially if what you’re selling has a higher price tag. The key to driving the consumer through the funnel is consistency. You want them to have your business on their mind until they eventually make the decision to purchase your services. They can reach this point out of necessity (their pipes are leaking and they need a plumber ASAP) or from constantly being reminded of your business and services. One of the best ways to keep your potential customers thinking about your business is to use target display ads.
Build Awareness with Targeted Display Ads
Think about a person who drives to work every morning. Each day, they take the same route, and they pass by the same billboard. After a few weeks of seeing the same advertisement on that billboard, the image of the ad will stick with them. The idea
706-685-6611 aletheiadigital.com info@aletheiadigital.com
convert those users into customers. With display ads, you have the ability to “retarget” or “remarket” those potential customers. This just means you show your ads to those users who visited certain pages on your site, ensuring they keep your business or services in mind. Remarketing can be the perfect way to catch those consumers who are on the fence about buying your services.
Those are only a few of the ways you can hone in on the right audience. Your display ads will not only boost awareness, they can help with lead generation, conversions, impressions, or driving traffic to your website. You may not see an overnight boom in business from targeted display ads alone, but with a focus on increasing awareness, you will be on the right track to gaining new customers.
is that the consumer will eventually have a need (or want) for the product or service advertised on the billboard, and that image will still be with them. Targeted display ads are like little billboards that are personalized to users, and appear across their social media platforms and other websites.
Display ads work in the same way that billboards do, in terms of keeping your services or business on the minds of consumers. The more they see your ads, the more they will think about your business. However, display ads differ from billboards in that their messaging can be altered to keep the ad “fresh” and prevent the consumer from seeing the same ad over and over again. While building awareness of your services is an important first step to growing your business, it’s not the only thing display ads are good for.
Users who have visited your website but left without contacting you or making a purchase decision may seem like a lost cause, but there’s still a way to
Target the Right Audience
You can have the best-looking display ad in the world, but it doesn’t mean much if the right people aren’t seeing it. The magic behind targeted display ads is the targeted part. With modern targeting practices, you can hyper-focus your ad so that it gets in front of the people who would benefit most from seeing it.
There are a plethora of ways to target your ads, including but not limited to:
• Search Keyword Targeting
• Mobile App Targeting
• Device Targeting
• Operating System Targeting
• Geo-Targeting
• Demographic Targeting
• Behavioral Targeting
• Credit History Targeting
• Psycho-graphic Targeting

Why I Support the RCAW
Donald Vose, Legends Roofing Co.
Hello members and future members of the RCAW. My name is Donald Vose. I am an owner of Legends Roofing Co., Inc. I am also the Treasurer on the Board of Directors for the RCAW. I am a threetime past President of the RCAW and have served on the “Board of Director’s” for the last 18 years except for six months.
I started my roofing career in Kent, WA in 1976 just after my graduation from high school. After a mix of college and roofing for the next several years, I have been in the roofing industry continually sense July of 1980. That’s 42 plus years in roofing.
Wimp Palmer, an outside salesman for the Hugh McNiven Company, encouraged me to get involved with the RCAW. So, in 1985 I became a member. At this time the RCAW was a vibrant organization led by powerhouse roofing companies such as Stanley Roofing, Queen City Roofing, Crow Roofing, Wayne’s Roofing and Bosnick Roofing just to name a few.
I’ve had the pleasure of serving on the Board of Director’s under past President’s George Madsen, Steve Grinaker, Allen Merrill, John Holum, Matt Swanson, Colin Madson, Mike Jorve, Casey Groves, DJ Esrary and our current President Justin Shirley. I served with fellow board members Mark Ivars, Steve Sloan, Phil Enhat, Dan Johnson, Dustin Kathol, Mark Stanley, Jordan Devaney, Denny Devaney, and Gary Gilmer to name a few. I thank every volunteer that has ever served on the Board of Directors of the RCAW.
I’ve had the privilege of working with several Executive Director’s. I’d like to highlight a couple. The first is Sefton out of retirement to be our Executive Director.
Sefton served in that role for 10 plus years. Many of these years the association was struggling financially, and Sefton way of compensation, yet he continued to push on. Because of his leadership, the association began to grow, and he deserves all our gratitude. He was truly an inspiration. When Sefton retired, we handed the reigns over to Tracey Prociw. Tracey was a powerhouse and brought our association into the 21st century. Under her leadership, the association now She developed a quarterly magazine, social media sites, and brought in many associate members because of her many connections. One is Heidi Ellsworth and The Roofer’s Coffee Shop. Amanda Fields is our current Executive Director, and I am excited to see the growth of our association under her leadership.
Our association currently has two individuals on our BOD who are instrumental in “National Women in Roofing”, Heidi I can tell you firsthand intelligent, articulate, and educated. I encourage each of you to participate in our event in October that is a collaboration between the RCAW and NWiR. I welcome the growth of Women in the Roofing industry

Generating Growth with Marketing
Anna Anderson, Art Unlimited CEO
It's easy to think of marketing as having a website, doing a social post or being listed as a local community sponsor; yet effective marketing that drives results is a true art form. Marketing includes everything from building a brand and crafting an identity, to creating buzz around new products and services. Once the buzz is created you then carefully measure results and plan future strategy based on those findings! As a full service marketing agency with over 40 years of experience Art Unlimited has had the privilege of helping some of the largest and most successful roofing companies with their marketing.
Why You Need Marketing
When we think of marketing, we see the primary role of marketing is to understand your customers' pain points, guide them through a challenging situation and do it better than your competitors.
Marketing helps you to connect with potential customers, generate leads and convert leads into paying customers through different strategies like paid ads on social media platforms, organic search engine optimization (SEO), content marketing, etc.
Marketing Pro Tip #1: Reviews and the impact on their marketing
As a business owner, it's important to understand the impact reviews have on your marketing.
Reviews are proof that other people have had experiences with your business, and they're useful in helping new customers feel confident about working with your business. Great companies will have consistent positive reviews from customers, this shows Google and other platforms that your services outshine your competitors.
There are three ways that negative reviews can affect lead generation:
• If they're handled poorly
• If there aren't enough positive ones for people searching for information about your brand online
• If you don’t have any reviews
In both cases, it's important not only that you respond quickly but also acknowledge how upset the customer was with how things went down and be transparent about how you're going forward from here so this doesn't happen again!
Marketing Pro Tip #2:
Is your website mobile friendly?
Is your website mobile friendly? If it's not, you're missing out on a lot of potential traffic. The digital world has shifted to mobile first search results with over 80% of searches in the roofing industry beginning on a mobile device. If you're not keeping up with the times and your website doesn't load
well on a mobile device you could be missing out on a lot of potential business!
To check if your website is mobile-friendly and learn how to fix any issues, visit Google's MobileFriendly Test. You can search for the term “Google mobile friendly test” to find this tool.
Marketing Pro Tip #3: How to Keep Customers Coming Back
When you’re working to build your brand, marketing is a great tool. You can use it to get in front of new customers, who may come back and buy from you again in the future.
There are many ways to keep your best customers coming back! In fact, if you take care of your customers every step of the way, they’ll do most of the work for you. We are big fans of helping our customers build out a referral program to generate high quality leads.
Referral Programs: This is one of the best ways to generate new sales without spending money on advertising or hiring a sales team. If a customer likes what they bought from you enough they will want their friends and family members to find out about it too! If those people also become happy customers, then all three parties benefit from wordof-mouth referrals (and maybe even social media!).
You should make sure that everyone who buys something has an easy way to refer a friend. This
can be done by an email form through your website or a software application with prewritten text like "This company is amazing and took the stress out of a new roof!" Once someone buys something through this method, reward them with loyalty points so that they feel motivated by their own success! It's important, not just because it keeps sales high, but because happier customers are also advocates who tell others about how great their experience was.
Marketing Tools and Resources
There are many marketing tools and resources that can help you generate growth. Here are some of the most important ones:
• Follow Anna and two podcasts she regularly contributes to: Best Of Success Podcast Show, and Roofers Coffee Shop Podcast
• Visit our website for additional content & marketing solutions to drive growth
Request a marketing competitive audit on our website
The most important thing is to not be scared about trying new things or experimenting! Our goal is to bring Life to marketing for contractors across the nation.

Fields Roof Service
35 Years of Membership
Fields Roof Service, Inc. has been in the Kent, WA area since 1957 and were accepted as members of the RCAW in August of 1987. This was just a few years after the original owner, Larry Fields sold the company to the salesmen and installers that had kept his business successful. The mentorship and networking combined allowed retired schoolteachers to lead the company through the next twenty years. Thomas Gilmer partnered with Scott Pepper through their retirement in the early 2000s. Tom was an active board member and Board President during his tenure.
It has always been a priority for FRS to be a place of education and mentorship for employees and colleagues. Each of the past owners of FRS have had first-hand experience with installations, estimates and sales. As many of you know the industry has vastly changed since the 1950s. From cold-asphalt and pumper trucks to new solar shingles and hybrid trucks, it’s an ever-changing and growing industry we should continue to be proud of.
The partnership with the RCAW over all these years has help support FRS goal to be relative to our local industry and continue impacting our local communities. This partnership has been invaluable. Between Washington State’s LNI program, material changes in the marketplace and consumer landscape the ability to have friends and colleagues to reach out to for resources and advice has created a comradery that everyone should want to be a part of.
FRS has specifically grown relationships with Rebuilding Together South Sound to continue revitalizing our local neighborhoods with local improvements and supported our local National Women in Roofing Chapters to help focus on growth of the next generation of workforce and leadership. This has helped Brittany Wimbish (Gilmer) come full circle and follow in her grandfather’s footsteps by participating on the Board of Directors for the RCAW for the next three years.
The continued importance of creating a community within our local roofing and construction industry is imperative, and the RCAW is on a mission to continue impacting our growing companies and creating an inclusive environment to assisting in bettering everyone. Join us at our next event to meet us and ask why belonging is so important.
Until then, if you have questions on membership, and the benefits of the RCAW partnership, our Board of Directors are available as well as our Executive Director, Amanda Fields, and her team. Please also check out the list of associate companies that have a list of benefits to assist your employees and the company’s bottom line. This includes legal, insurance, administrative support to office supplies.
The RCAW is here for you, and we’ve been glad they’ve been here for us.
Looking For Skilled Labor?
Joshua Engelbrecht, Toolbelt CEO
Vancouver-based construction tech platform
ToolBelt has transformed the way construction connects for skilled labor. The app connects skilled labor (subs/installers) with contractors and builders of all trades. Numerous of the West’s top contractors use ToolBelt to find quality labor to match their sales demand. Over 10,000 professionals utilize the app monthly to solve their labor pains and expand their business across the west. Over the past two years it has connected labor for over $100 million worth of projects.
Traditionally, this connection is done through word of mouth, said Engelbrecht (CEO/Founder), who spent years working in general contracting. That means that a builder or contractor’s capacity for work is limited by the number of people they may know in different trades. For instance, if a contractor gets 10 requests for roofing and they only have 2 roofing crews available they will be limited in how many projects they can take on.
ToolBelt focuses on the residential construction industry, which is booming, particularly as people have begun to remodel homes following Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns and single-family home demand rises. Currently, homeowner demand is outstripping contractor capacity by 70%.
ToolBelt’s success can be linked to its easy to use interface and contractor focused approach. It takes less than 60 seconds to create a profile and begin connecting for opportunities. ToolBelt allows for both parties to vet each other and mimics the existing way pros connect in construction. The app is available in multiple languages and allows for language translation between parties. Many contractors have quickly found quality labor and built new relationships which has led to a decrease in backlog. Several contractors have begun adding new trades to their business, for example a large window contractor now offers roofing because of how quickly ToolBelt connects them with labor.
ToolBelt’s team is led by experts that have jumped on board from the industry’s top companies to help the platform scale nationally through 2023. Soon everyone nationwide will be able to connect with the labor they need with one click.

More Than Just Shingles: Secure Choice™ 5-Part Roof System by Malarkey Roofing Products®
Renee’ Williams,
Sales Representative Western Washington Malarkey Roofing Products®
More than Just Shingles: Secure Choice™ 5-Part Roof System by Malarkey Roofing Products®
Throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond, Malarkey Roofing Products® has pioneered roofing shingle innovations for more than 65 years. In addition to introducing NEX® polymer modified (rubberized) asphalt and smog-reducing granules to the roofing industry, Malarkey has also developed accessory products to support a complete roof system. Installed together, the roof performs better, and can be eligible for enhanced warranty coverage via Malarkey Certified Contractors.
As contractors, you know that new roof is a cohesive, coordinated system, consisting of 5 key components. In order of installation, they are: 1) ice and water barrier, 2) underlayment, 3) starter shingles, 4) roofing shingles, and 5) hip & ridge shingles. We call the complete system, Secure Choice™.
Ice & Water Barrier:
Extra protection for leak prone areas
Some areas of the roof are more prone to leaks than others, like roof valleys, roof edges, and roofto-sidewall transitions where rain, snow, and ice are more apt to accumulate. In these critical areas, Malarkey recommends an ice and water barrier for the initial, extra layer of protection. Arctic Seal® and Secure Start® HT are the economical and performance options respectively.
Underlayment:
Vapor barrier beneath the shingles
Delivered in roll form, Malarkey offers various underlayments to accommodate differing performance requirements. Secure Start® Smooth Grade (SG), Plus, and Permeable are all underlayment options to consider, as well as Right Start™ UDL for additional versatility. Each underlayment provides a water-resistant or waterproof layer covering the entire roof.
Starter Shingles:
The first row of shingles fortifies the rest
Malarkey offers both the Smart Start™ starter shingle for three-tab and architectural shingles as well as the Windsor® Starter for designer shingles. These starter shingles, placed at the eave and rake edges of the roof, are made with enhanced sealant and a modified size designed to extend up beyond the fastening point of the first course of shingles to fortify these more vulnerable shingles against wind uplift, shingle blow-up, and moisture migration.
Roofing (Field) Shingles:
Shingles add color, style, and roof protection
Roofing or field shingles, add color, style, and most importantly, protect the roof from the elements.
In Washington state Malarkey offers every major shingle design including 3-Tab (traditional), Architectural (most popular), and Designer (most unique). Each design is available in several color blends to match most home and building exteriors.
Hip & Ridge Shingles:
Added protection and dimension at roof peaks
Hips and ridges on the roof can often experience greater damage from events like hail and debris. Hip and ridge shingles provide extra impact protection, as well as extra roof dimension for curb appeal, at these more vulnerable, visible areas. Malarkey offers both EZ-Ridge™ (high profile) and Ridge Flex™ (low profile) shingle options to fit any roofing project.
Extended Warranties
Malarkey Certified Contractors can offer homeowners enhanced warranties when installing Malarkey shingles and accessories as part of a complete roof system.

Why Reputable Directories Matter for SEO
Karen L. Edwards, RCS, COO
Search engine optimization is key to being found on the web and directories can play a key role.
Directories were created in the early days of the internet when search engines like Google didn’t exist. It was Yahoo! that made the first one to help people keep track of different websites in different categories.
The downfall of web directories
What seemed like a good idea at first soon became overwhelming and time consuming to scroll through all the categories. There was no differentiating the good sites from the bad either. That led to the development of search engines.
Search engines run off algorithms and do the work for a user, returning websites that are relevant to what they are searching for. The algorithm looks for keywords in titles or in the content on the site to deliver results to the searcher.
Marketers quickly caught on to the value of a directory for ranking higher in search engine results. Directories were popping up everywhere and companies were listing their sites on any directory they could find. This led to search engines beginning to penalize sites that were on too many directories. Directories themselves became somewhat of the wild west and some even started charging fees to remove listings. Today most directories are not even monitored, are considered spammy and won’t help your business.
The rise of relevant directories
The key to successful SEO is through the use of relevant directories. You want to have your business listed in a directory that is specific to your niche in
this case it would be roofing. Cognitive SEO uses the example of Sound Cloud. It is a directory for musicians that links back to the musician’s website. The key to being successful on the directory is to update it regularly, post content and engage with potential customers. Just creating the directory alone isn’t enough. You need to share your videos, podcasts, news, articles and more on the directory.
The RoofersCoffeeShop® directory is a relevant directory for roofing contactors that delivers the ability to share valuable content to establish your business as a reputable roofing company in your service area. It is a directory that is managed and monitored by real people, which comes with a nominal cost. What you get in return is a professional listing on a relevant roofing site that links back to your business.
For these reasons, Roofing Contractors Association of Washington (RCAW) has a listing on the RCS directory. Because the RCS directory is roofing specific, it ranks well in search engines’ eyes as a legitimate roofing industry website. For businesses wanting to increase their presence and digital footprint, a listing on an established directory is a viable option. One way to be part of the RCS directory is by joining the R-Club, the only roofing club in the industry. Contractors who join the R-Club automatically get a directory listing on RCS and further prove their legitimacy by being a part of “where the industry meets.”
Search Engine Journal (SEJ) reports that in Google’s eyes, “Links from a web directory listing are a lot less influential than a super relevant contextual link from a high-authority site in your niche.” RCS is your opportunity to have the link from a high-authority site in the roofing industry.
SEJ recommends stopping looking at directories as a source of links but rather as a source of traffic and trust. The value is realized in the credibility and traffic that can be driven to your site from the relevant directory.

RCAW Helps Salal Stay Connected to the Communities We Serve
Jim Nugent
Over the last 13 years, Salal Credit Union's Dealer Direct Lending program has been a real "win-win" for both our members and the contractors we've built long-lasting partnerships with. The Roofing Contractors Association of Washington has been a cornerstone of that success. To mark our 10th year as members, we asked Jim Millsap, Salal Dealer Direct Account Manager for the Northwest, about the value and benefits of being a RCAW member.
"Roofing contractors are an important part of our program and they always have been," Jim said. "We've partnered with many RCAW members to provide financing for their customers. The Association's meetings and emails are a great source of industry information, helping us be better financing partners because we know more about the market our dealers are working in. RCAW dinners and events are excellent networking opportunities for us. Especially the annual trade show. We meet a lot of great people there."
Vince Punteney, Salal Vice President of Consumer Lending, had this to say about RCAW membership:
"It's a big deal for us because we're a memberowned credit union, so we want to be sure we're working with the best partners, as well as developing financing products that actually work well for roofing. You just can't know that stuff without talking with the people who are in the industry and out there in the field doing jobs. It's also important to us that we're a part of the communities we serve and work in—and RCAW is a key part of this community."
Founded in Seattle in 1948, today Salal has over 52,000 members in Washington State and across the country. Since we launched our Salal Dealer Direct Lending program in 2009, we've funded over $1 billion in home improvement and solar system loans. We partner with contractors all over the U.S. to provide easy and affordable financing for homeowners, while giving our Dealer Partners an effective and reliable sales tool to win more jobs and take their businesses to the next level. Over the last 13 years, this collaborative effort has helped over 61,000 families invest in their homes, lower their utility bills, and fight climate change.

RCAW 51st Annual Golf Tournament
Casey Groves, RCAW Golf Tournament Chair Axis Roofing & Gutter
RCAW’s 51st Annual Golf Tournament was held on Friday, June 24th at Auburn Golf Course. The day’s event was nothing short of good time for all that were able to take in the beautiful sunny day on the course. We were able to reserve the golf course for the entire day for our golfers, sponsors, vendors, and volunteers to put on a fun filled afternoon. We had long drive holes, KP holes, putting contest, as well as a hole in one contest for a chance to attend the 2023 Superbowl. The fun for golfers in addition to a traditional golf tournament was the hole sponsored games, that they had set up on their tee boxes, as well as trying to out-golf a golf pro from the LPGA – that was no easy feat. Vendors and associate members were able to network, or just get to see a friendly face that may play through their hole or visit at the awards dinner. It was fantastic to have all our returning sponsors back, from our major sponsors like GAF as our Dinner sponsor, CertainTeed as our Golf Cart sponsor, Polyglass our Prize sponsor and Pabco Roofing Products as a Golf Ball sponsor. To all our hole sponsors and putting contest, it was great to see you back out on the course and we thank you once again. These events cannot have as much success as they do with out your support for the RCAW and the generous time and monetary donations it takes to host this event.
With the 50/50 raffle tickets sales in full swing and RCAW snapping photos around the course of the golfers, people were getting hungry, however, they were not hungry for too long. As golfers got to the ABC sponsored hole, they were cooking up enough hotdogs to feed a small army. The GAF sponsored hole was feeding everyone grilled oysters, and the SRS sponsored hole, were feeding brats and polish dogs, nobody was golfing hungry.
The end of the round was just as action packed. Everyone was able to enjoy a delicious prime rib dinner with all the fixing and side dishes, followed up with a great variety of deserts to choose from.
With the help of Golf Genius app that tracked the pace and scores of the golf teams made a seamless transition into the thousands of dollars in prizes and awards given at the end of the tournament.
Our 50/50 raffle tickets were sold throughout the day and paid out $885 for the lucky ticket. Woohoo !!! Our golf 4some of the hour that won by 5 strokes from the next closest team was Jake Lively, Chris Cameron, Ben Nelson, Steve Weller. Congratulations to our newly crowned champs at a score of 52.
As we all prepare for Fall to set in and another end of a great golf tournament season, we are already planning to make our RCAW 2023 52nd Annual Golf Tournament even more enjoyable and tastier for everyone. With the success from everyone involved, RCAW was able to raise over $18,250 towards our statewide efforts to benefit our membership with the education, training, legislation, and leadership within our industry. For that, we thank everyone who was part of this event and see everyone next year. Be sure to sign up early for next year’s golf tournament, as this year we had to turn groups away as we hit our golfer max the course would allow.

Axis Roof and Gutter Inc.
Casey Groves, President
Axis Roof and Gutter began in 2001 as a roof cleaning and maintenance company as a sole proprietary company. It all began as I (Casey Groves) was working part time for my friend cleaning and repairing all types of roofs in the summertime the previous year. I learned all about roofing and liked what I was doing. My full-time job was a building supervisor for a local machine shop that made airplane parts. It was a good job and liked managing but wasn’t a fulfilling career. I made the decision to license a company (Axis) in 2001. I needed to moonlight the roofing service as I kept my full-time job that worked 4 10’s which gave me 3 days a week to work on building Axis. I continued this trend for 4 years. My wife at the time was working for an HVAC company and did very well in sales, and she supported me to jump in full time and focus on building the company. I did just that and hired my first full time employees. Fast forward two years, the company is now growing quickly, and work is beginning to back up. Growing pains were beginning to show.
In 2007, my wife Cheri and I, decided to move the company into an S-Corp from a sole proprietor and hire office staff to handle the phone calls and scheduling side of the business. This was about the time that we learned running a business is very stressful and needed more help to keep up with the demand. In 2010 Cheri made the tough choice to leave her position as the top salesman for her company, and the region for that matter, and join Axis full time. We moved from an office on our property into a leased building that could handle our 8 trucks with a locked gate at night. This worked out at the time with 3 office staff desks and a back office to handle meetings. Cheri was running the office as our operations manager, and I was selling re roofs and maintenance services.
As our referrals and advertising budget increased, so did our demand for growth. We needed more room for our fleet of trucks and more office staff, we found a lot in Arlington that was an acre large inside city limits. It took about 3 years to permit, build, and pave for parking but we created our own office space the way we wanted it to look and easy for all our employee’s to safely store tools and equipment that is close to I-5 in the north end. In 2014 we were able to move into the new office space and in 2 months we were in full operation.
Today Axis has 28 trucks, 50-70 employees at any given time that cover the Puget sound region and are still growing. Cheri and I look forward to work daily as our employees are like family and friends. I have learned a tremendous amount in the roofing industry and continually never stop learning about new and improved materials and applications. Cheri and I are happy the roofing industry found us, don’t know where we would be without it.
In 2007, As Axis began to grow our customer base, new problems not yet navigated began to come up. We turned to the RCAW at the time for guidance on both roofing application and help to navigate the complicated Dept of Labor and Industry website to find rules and regulations. We wasted no time to become members and utilize the RCAW member log in to access, fall protection plans and work safety plans on the association’s website. This was a pivotal time to be sure be created a culture for our company and proud to be currently serving on the board of directors for the last 6 years.

Roofing Industry Comes Together in a Time of Need for Deserving Family in Federal Way
Earlier this year, the Roofing Contractors Association of Washington (RCAW) received information about the Lopez family in Federal Way who were in desperate need of a new roof. RCAW annually operates the Basic Shelter Project, where they help repair damaged roofs for families in need, all costs donated by RCAW members. The Lopez family purchased their home a few years ago, not aware of the extensive damage their roof was in. Mr. Lopez, the matriarch has two caring children, Alfredo, and Bris, who were so concerned about how their elderly parents were going to fix and pay for the repairs, reached out to RCAW for help. RCAW immediately did a call to action to their membership, and instantly joined forces with generous industry members who were willing to donate their time, materials, and money to help this family, make their house a home again for their large family.
On August 12, 2022, Guardian Roofing graciously visited their home and repaired their damaged and unsafe chimney. (Photo Attached). Next Wednesday, August 17th RCAW members, Legends Roofing, will be graciously donating all of the labor for full tear-off and GAF, North America’s Largest Roofing manufacturing company is donating the roofing materials package. Also contributing to this project is: Achtens Quality Roofing, All Ply Roofing, LLC, Madsen Roofing, Esary Roofing & Siding, Axis Roof & Gutter, Minihan & Sons, LLC and Convoy Supply, Inc., will join forces to repair the damaged roof.
“Knowing recent times are tough for families and businesses. I am very proud to be a part of an association, like RCAW, who’s members promptly come together, to help families in need. This is a positive story that needs to be shared with others.” said Justin Shirley, 2022 RCAW President.

Wetherholt and Associates, Inc. RCAW Member Since 1984
Wetherholt and Associates, Inc. was started by Ray Wetherholt in 1984, after amicably leaving Cascade Testing Laboratory.
While at Cascade Testing, Ray was a regular contributor and attendee at RCAW meetings starting in 1980. In 1978-1979 Crow Roofing, asked Cascade Testing to assist and supervise a yearlong study of blistering of hot asphalt built-up roofing applied over urethane roof insulation board (the precursor of isoboard) which was published by Western Roofing magazine. Ray assisted local contractors in resolving roof related issues. Ray found he liked working with professional roofing contractors, manufacturers, and suppliers. So, when he started Wetherholt and Associates, joining RCAW was a natural thing to do.
Initially, roofing contractors did not want to have Wetherholt inspectors on their jobs, or “supervising” their work. Once it became clear that Wetherholt and the inspection team were there to observe, verify, and assist contractors in fulfilling their obligations under their contract, the roofing contractors started referring owners to Wetherholt. Wetherholt leveled the playing field and was willing to be fair, without an axe to grind like some of the other “roofing consultants” at the time.
Over the years, RCAW members, and the local design and roofing community at large, have in turn supported Wetherholt and Associates as part of the “roofing community”.
It is a testimony to the quality of roofers in the PNW that there not many roofing consultants locally, when compared to areas like California. “Our roofs are tested early and often”, as one contractor put it.
Our projects have included:
• Experience Music Project, now Museum of Pop Music, designed by Frank Gehry
• Ala Moana Shopping Center Expansion in Honolulu, HI, designed by DLR
• Numerous schools in local school districts, including Seattle, Tacoma, Northshore, Lake Washington, Everett, North Thurston, Stanwood, and others
• Most of the roofs at the Seattle Center
• Museum of Glass designed by Arthur Erickson
• Various large distribution center buildings across the country
• And many unique residential projects in Medina, Bellevue, Seattle, and elsewhere
Wetherholt has supported education within the roofing community with “in-house” seminars for designers and roofing contractors. Ray has taught courses at the Roofers Expo and has spoken at RCAW meetings.
Wetherholt personnel are encouraged to join the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC), formerly RCI, and obtain credentials as Registered Roof Consultants (RRC) and Registered Roof Observers. Additional education and registrations related to the building enclosure are also encouraged.
Ray ‘sort of’ retired in 2019, selling his shares to the other principals, currently including Don Davis (Managing Principal), Bob Card, Mike Caniglia, Pravat Sripranaratanakul, and Jose Laurean. Ray continues to consult on specialized projects and provides litigation support.

The partnership between the Roofing Contractor’s Association of Washington (RCAW) and Women in Roofing (NWiR) began a few years ago with our former Executive Director, Tracey Prociw, and our local Seattle Chapter of NWiR. Many women from Washington are a part of NWiR and their associated companies with the RCAW. It was a natural progression to bring a localized event that focuses on the shared importance of education, mentoring, and networking.
RCAW and NWiR are excited to bring our first annual Pacific Northwest Women in Roofing Day on Saturday, October 22nd at the Hotel Interurban in Tukwila. We’ve planned a day full of education and hands-on training for you and your team members, new and tenured. One of the shared goals of the NWiR and RCAW is to continue to create environments for our employees to come together and feel apart of a community. Those that work within the roofing industry come from vast backgrounds, and most likely didn’t set out to be in this industry. But we all know the roofing industry is a lucrative one to grow your career and businesses in.
On Friday, October 21st, we invite you to attend the NWiR and RCAW Networking Event including drinks and appetizers. Meet new companies and
exchange information to increase your professional (Free, register). After the Networking event, join RCAW for their Annual Membership Dinner and enjoy a good meal while listening to CEO, McKay Daniels with the National Roofing Contractors Association talk about the current state of our industry ($75 Fee, must register). Finally, our big event, the PNW Women in Roofing Day on Saturday, October 22nd, wake up and join us for a delicious breakfast and some networking, while we get geared up for an exciting educational day with a variety of local, statewide, and national business owners, industry influencers, and our manufacturing partners (lunch also included). Thank you to our Event Sponsors GAF and Stoneway Roofing Supply. We appreciate your continued support to help make this event happen, as well as many other current sponsors.
We do encourage you to stay at the Hotel Interurban in Tukwila and take advantage of our discounted sleeping room rate, just mention RCAW as you reserve your room.

8th Annual RCAW Salmon Derby
Donovan Gladstone, RCAW Salmon Derby Chair GAF
More Fish Caught. Bigger Fish Caught. More Derby Fisherman. Higher Paid Prize Money. More Raffle Prizes. The 8th Annual RCAW Salmon Derby was the biggest and best salmon derby ever held on Aug. 3rd, 2022, in marine areas 10, 11, & 13 with winners, lunch & raffle prizes awarded at the Point Defiance Marina Dock!!! It never could have happened if it wasn’t for all the generous sponsors of the derby and the great passion of those in our roofing industry fishing the spectacularly beautiful Puget Sound waters of Washington State. We thank you all greatly! Next year’s derby will be August 2, 2023.
It all started with hyped news reports from all over the Puget Sound that salmon fishing was HOT, HOT, HOT! Fishermen were limiting out everywhere in marine areas 10, 11 & 13 which spans basically from Olympia, up through Gig Harbor, under the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and up to Seattle, WA. Rumor had it 2 days after salmon fishing was open on July 1st, 2022, that 28% of the catch had occurred. There were several salmon a day even being caught right off the Point Defiance Marina Dock! Was this an anomaly?! YES, it was. Unbelievable!!! Everyone was talking about it. Then more news came in that fishing off the Washington coastline, from Westport to Sekiu was On-Fire too. Lots of catching and big salmon being caught, both kings & silvers. The Fish & Game Dept. shut down fishing in Area 11 (Tacoma Narrows Bridge up to the tip of Vashon Island) around the 3rd week of July as so many salmon were being caught. Marine Area 11 is the core area of the derby so this was concerning until it was announced it would reopen Aug. 3rd, 2022, the “ACTUAL DAY’ of the 8th Annual RCAW Salmon Derby, BOOM! Game On! Excitement was building and the results of the derby exceeded expectations.
The weather was perfect at round 75 degrees and sunny with the tides lining up nicely for the derby. The event was full of excitement with 82 derby
ticket holders catching 24 salmon weighed in at the dock with Beacon as the Weigh-In Sponsor. GAF was the Main Event Sponsor, with Donovan Gladstone – GAF Steep Slope Territory Manager as the MC on the microphone announcing all the winners of the event. Achten’s Quality Roofing sponsored and paid for catered box lunches from Giorgio’s for all derby ticket holders. ABC Supply kindly sponsored the Billy Shew live blues band at the dock and both Taylor Metals and Pabco were thoughtful Major Raffle Sponsors. Also, notable raffle sponsors included: Polyglass, Stoneway Roofing Supply, Preferred Roof Services, Roofer’s Choice Insurance, Eagleview Technologies and Malarkey. Contractor’s Roof Service generously sponsored the Jighole game with raffle prizes to add a little fun to the event. Goodwill Sponsors included: GCI, LLC, Gafco Roofing & Construction, NuRay Metals & Certainteed with a portion of those monies contributed to Northwest Salmon Research and PGA for salmon rearing program and chip & tracking of salmon to study and increase salmon returns in the Puget Sound waters. Finally, we cannot forget to thank all our base level sponsors that make this derby a great success year after year. Basic level derby sponsors include CRS, Pioneer, Convoy, Hunter Panels, OMG, FRS, Esary Roofing, Madsen Roofing, Guardian Roofing, Velux, Hope Roofing, IKO, Owens Corning, McMains Roofing, Sportco, Legends Roofing, Miles Resources, Tristate Roofing, True Blue Roofing, Ascension Home Services, Stanley Roofing, Axis Roof & Gutter, TAM, & Weller Associates. We also thank Art Tachell & Team at the Point Defiance Marina. The RCAW and all its members and those that participated in the Annual RCAW Salmon Derby thank you all!
The Annual RCAW Salmon Derby is an important event in many ways. Funds from the derby help run the RCAW as well as help with the RCAW Safety Program, providing services and education to roofing contractors in Washington State to help
keep them stay safe on the roof, coming home each day to their families. It is a fun, social event where roofing professionals can have a great time and get to know each other and their affiliated business partners. Lastly the RCAW donates from the derby funds towards “Northwest Salmon Research” and “Puget Sound Anglers (PGA)” to help with salmon rearing programs and salmon research to help increase salmon returns in the Puget Sound waters.
Please SAVE THE DATE for next year’s 9th Annual RCAW Salmon Derby on Wednesday, Aug. 2nd, 2023!
