EXPERIENTIAL MARKETING CHALLENGE: Create a touch point activation where consumers can demo the all new Bose QC20 in-ear noise canceling headphones, as well as existing Bose products in three global markets (London, Paris and Sydney) that target daily commuters. This activation targeted active lifestyle, music and media lovers who value amazing sound quality. Since most retailers do not have the capacity to offer guided demos, and do not offer consumers the ability to demo in-ear headphones, there is an inherent challenge to demo and sell in-ear headphones to consumers. As a result, Sandbox was challenged by Bose to create a “Pop-Up” demo opportunity that utilized Sandbox product specialists to demo the features of the Bose QC20 in-ear noise canceling headphones and create a drive to retail for Bose and their retail partners.

The activation needed to be future proof, lightweight and easy to assemble. It also had to be scalable for different event location scenarios.

SOLUTION: Sandbox Marketing worked together with Bose to determine key high foot traffic locations in London, Paris and Sydney that would meet their needs to reach their target demographic. Each of these locations was analyzed and detailed summaries were provided to Bose to determine the best venues to guarantee program success.

Sandbox Marketing proposed a unique activation that was constructed entirely of aluminum and was easily scalable to allow for set up into different configurations. The set up could be assembled as an X, V, T or Lineal set up. Each of these set up configurations allowed the activation to set up in the optimal layout depending on the event space and was positioned atop custom event flooring that was also scalable. Since QC20 demos were the main focus of the activation, extended satellite listening stations were positioned on the exterior of the activation. This allowed for us to capture the attention of many consumers as they were walking by in the high traffic venues, and also allowed for an exterior access point for consumers to enter the activation. Sandbox created an iPad app that allowed consumers to participate in self-guided product demos, as well as listen to music on their own terms.

Bose product displays were built to provide superior consumer interaction, product security, as well as refined cable management. The complete activation was built to be worldwide power friendly and have a lifespan much longer than the activation. Staffing was sourced in each of the markets and consisted of tech savvy brand ambassadors. All Brand Ambassador uniforms were designed and sourced by Sandbox. Sandbox needed to take into account vastly different weather locations in the various activation markets. Finally, all creative for the entire activation was created by Sandbox utilizing Bose creative assets.

BEHR - MEXICAN NATIONAL SOCCER TEAM CHALLENGE: How do you reach the fastest growing ethnic segment in the US? One that is 50 million people strong? Easy, follow their passion. We’re talking about Hispanic Americans. And we’re talking about soccer.

Today in the U.S., Hispanics are fueling the growth of the population, internet usage, technology sales and pumping more than $1 trillion of spending power into the economy according to a March 2012 Adweek article.

SOLUTION: Behr Paint has teamed up with The Home Depot as Official Sponsors of the Mexican National Soccer Team US Tour. In addition to broadcast integration via Univision, field-level signage and referee in-game usage of Behr Paint, the partnership allows Behr a large presence at the Futbol Fiesta.

This pre-game fan zone allows brands to connect and interact with Hispanic soccer fans. Sandbox Marketing created a multi-faceted experience complete with product integration, branding, social media, hospitality and premium giveaways. Together with the Behr Marketing Team, Sandbox developed the Frame the Flag Challenge whereby consumers paint unfinished picture frames with Behr paint and then hang them over a Mexican flag printed on a wall. The frame with most creative touch is judged the winner and the artist is awarded a signed Mexican team jersey.

Other activities include the Soccer Chip Challenge where fan test their soccer skills by chipping a soccer ball into branded 5 gallon buckets and the ever popular Bucket Stacking Challenge. In this activity, consumers have 20 seconds to stack six 5 gallon buckets in a specific order mirroring one of three images in front of them. Sounds easy but it can be tricky and is tons of fun for the fans.

The Behr hospitality zone is an area where Behr sales reps can talk to professional customers, foster relationships and generate additional sales.

SOCIAL MEDIA / VIRAL MARKETING CHALLENGE: Three weeks before the start of the college Spring Break season, our client, göt2b, came to us with an idea to support the relaunch of the 2Sexy line of products. What would it take to make this year’s Spring Break, the sexiest in recent history? göt2b 2Sexy is all about adding volume to female hair and the brand tag-line is “Boom Boom 2 the Volume”. The brand didn’t have sample or trial size product for the 2Sexy line, so the brand would need to give out full size product worth $7.99 retail. These consumer touches are going to need to really deliver some ROI and Sandbox will be challenged to move the digital needle, in addition to building a sexy activation. We’ve got our work cut out for us!

SOLUTION: Creating the sexy look and feel of the activation was critical and paramount to the göt2b 2Sexy launch. Working with the client from an initial hand sketch through the final build out, Sandbox worked with our staff designers to develop a sexy structure that featured vibrant hot pinks, blacks and shimmery silvers that would play out as our backdrop and roof panel segments. Because you always have to plan for the extreme side of experiential marketing, Sandbox built structural webbing into all of the panels for durability to last 10 days of beach winds. Our Sexy Staffers were outfitted in hot pink bras, baby-doll lingerie covers and hot pink ruffle boy shorts. Ooooh La La! Boom Boom – A custom 56” wide, hot pink boombox that pumped out the jams was conceptualized and built by Sandbox for the client as a support piece for their digital and print campaign. This also doubled as a product display and was a huge fan favorite garnering quite a few photo ops of it’s own for social media sharing.

Custom styling stations were built for our Sexy Stylists to get the sexiness started on the beach. Our Sexy Stylists worked with female Spring Breakers to educate them on the 2Sexy product line and to pump up their sexiness levels on their hair. It was then onto the photo station where the sexy really got going. Pink Boas, Pink Boomboxes and lots of product shots. Sandbox employed our native digital technology that allowed the consumers to take photos and automatically upload them for access by the consumers. Instagram photos were taken with consumers own phones and everybody in the photo was tagged for maximum virality.

Next stop was customizing the photo, data collection and sharing the photo on Facebook at our custom desktop access point. All people in the photo were tagged and everybody liked the göt2b Facebook page. Twitter sharing was also encouraged.

Once completed, consumers were given information by our Sexy Staffers on the entire göt2b 2Sexy line and given product. In addition, if the Spring Breakers shared their photos on Instagram and hashtagged #got2b2sexy, they had their choice of some great hot pink göt2b 2Sexy branded sunglasses, string backpacks or koozies.

RESULTS: This was one engaging activation and one of the most packed on the beach. The göt2b 2Sexy activation stood out in a sea of mediocrity from other brands. The brand engagement with the consumer was top notch.

EHRMANN MIXIM - PRODUCT LAUNCH CHALLENGE: How do you launch a new brand into a crowded Greek Yogurt marketplace on a regional basis with limited marketing and media spend? The client asked for a large “Splash” event to help drive earned PR media, as well as offer a unique opportunity to invite existing and potential retail partners to the event. The launch event needed to be thematic and align with the pink and purple colors of the heart shaped product. Giving consumers the chance to sample the product was also very important. Most of all, this launch event needed to be unique. Big ideas with heart were needed.

SOLUTION: Because Mixim Yogurt has a unique heart shaped package, launching this product around Valentine’s Day made great sense to help drive media and awareness for the Mixim Greek Yogurt brand. Sandbox Marketing proposed a takeover of the iconic Queen Mary ship in Long Beach and turning it pink for a Valentine’s Day launch event. In addition to product sampling, a VIP experience for the Mixim guests was of utmost importance.

Making a big splash in the Los Angeles market is tough to do and you have to think big. One of the biggest things in LA is the historic Queen Mary cruise ship. What if we did something crazy like turn the Queen Mary PINK for a Valentine’s Day launch? We could use the Queen Mary as a canvas for the Mixim brand logos, including branded Mixim logos on the smoke stacks. Add in the use of the hangar from the original Spruce Goose as a secondary canvas and we had the makings of a great branded event right in the heart of LA. The “MIXIM LOVE BOAT” launch event was born. Nothing speaks love and romance better than the band Journey, so we brought in the #1 Journey Tribute band DSB to belt out some great Journey hits like “Faithfully” and “Don’t Stop Believin”. Layer in some amazing fireworks for the end of the night and you have one great VIP Mixim product launch event.

To increase our media reach, Sandbox also worked with Guinness World Records in advance of the event to set a world record on The Queen Mary for “Most Couples Simultaneously Feeding Each Other” with Mixim Greek Yogurt. This media draw was huge because if we set the Guinness World Record, then Mixim would donate $20,000 to their partner charity, the Children’s Heart Foundation.

To expand our reach and layer in a huge social media push, bloggers were invited and consumers were encouraged to share their photos with #miximlove tagged to each photo. With every shared photo Mixim would donate $1 to Children’s Heart Foundation, which will drive great media push on site. All photos will be streamed to the Mixim website for consumers to view through http://ehrmann.postano.com/.

BRAND STRATEGY CHALLENGE: Reaching teen consumers to discuss how Invisalign can improve their smiles and orthodontia needs can be challenging. They are a fickle bunch…often very particular about their appearance and reluctant to talk. We decided to engage a select set of teens in the perfect environment for beautiful smiles… Disney’s Next Big Thing talent show concert series.

SOLUTION: In support of the partnership between Invisalign and the 2012 Disney Next Big Thing Tour (NBT), Sandbox Marketing designed and implemented the Invisalign ‘Straight Up Station’ that was the destination of choice at the six Radio Disney NBT events across the country. The Straight Up Station featured the following elements: Grin It To Win It – Based on the hit TV game show Minute to Win It, this fun and action packed activation asked contestants to work through any number of challenges incorporating the actual Invisalign aligner trays. Challenges included transferring aligner trays from one bowl to another using chopsticks (Chopstick Challenge) and building a tower out of aligners to name a few. Each game was played in 60 seconds and those who complete the challenge were awarded a high-value premium with consolation prizes going to those who did not complete the challenge.

The ‘Show Us Your Smile’ Photo Op makes consumers feel like a rock star as they walk the red carpet and have their photo taken with a Disney NBT star. Once the consumers had their photo taken they would receive an Invisalign branded retrieval card that will enable them to download their photos and share them via Facebook.

The Doctor Consultation Area allowed Invisalign orthodontists the opportunity to engage potential patients and discuss Invisalign’s treatment options with them. This area also included Invisalign patient advocates that connected with the consumers on a more personal level and discussed the benefits of Invisalign vs. traditional braces.

Sandbox also developed iPad-based surveys to have consumers enter to win and also serve as a data capture device for lead generation.

BEHR - MOBILE MARKETING TOUR CHALLENGE: How do you reach paint professionals and general contractors when they are busy in their daily routines and talk to them about the BehrPro paint sales program that offers them discounts, preferred service and dedicated BehrPro reps that will help them grow their business? Secondarily, how can you shift their thinking that Home Depot can offer them the same quality service that other retail paint brands offer? Lastly, the BehrPro customer is largely Hispanic and feels more comfortable conversing in their native Spanish language. Sandbox took all of this into account and worked directly with the BehrPro team to produce the BehrPro Experience Mobile Marketing Tour, or MMT.

SOLUTION: Paint professionals and general contractors are a tough group to reach. They are generally on the move and running from one job to the next.

Creating a targeted experiential program really aligns with the goals of reaching these professionals and getting the BehrPro message out to them. This BehrPro program was established along with Home Depot to really drive paint sales to the professional who would ordinarily buy their paint at Sherwin Williams, Kelly Moore or Frazee. In addition, Home Depot used the BehrPro Experience MMT to drive Home Depot Pro Rewards membership program for professionals. This affinity rewards program has been a huge sales driver for Behr and Home Depot.

In 2012 and 2013, Sandbox Marketing worked in unison with the team at Behr paint to create an activation space outside of Home Depots and Job Site Visits across the United States that offered the professionals a chance to demo new Behr paint products, have some complimentary hospitality items like food and drinks and offer the BehrPro reps a chance to make new alliances. This all important touch point for the BehrPro reps gave them a chance to reach their target consumer and start a dialogue about how they could help them grow their business and drive sales.

In addition, BehrPro also created a sweepstakes to give away five fully decked out trailers complete with equipment and tools to help these paint professionals grow their business.

Sandbox Marketing/BehrPro MMT teams (5 Teams total across the USA) with fully bilingual Spanish speaking tour managers were up early and activating at Home Depot locations by 7:00am each and every day over a 6 month period. Routing for the tour took into account mileage between stops, regional weather patterns, market overlap and target Home Depot market locations. A whopping 704 event days were completed over the course of the program in 2012 and 2013.

The activation footprint needed to be modular to allow for different Home Depot location sizes. In addition, the activation needed to account for inclement and overly extreme weather. Sandbox recommended creating a hospitality area that was inviting, but also limited the general consumer foot traffic so that we could concentrate on reaching that target professional tradesman. Digital interaction involved driving prospective leads to Behr’s internal sales force software through iPad data entry. Sandbox Marketing provided the client with weekly and cumulative monthly reports from each region with full metrics and weekly recommendations.

PRODUCT SAMPLING CHALLENGE: Our client, göt2b, asked Sandbox to create an opportunity to help them launch an all new sea salt infused hair waving spray called beach trippin’.

The packaging and print ads were Mermaid themed and that should set the tone for the activation. The largest challenge for this is that there was a limited budget that would preclude us from participating in existing events that featured a built in foot traffic flow. In addition, göt2b did not have any sample size products available for distribution. This meant that we were limited to full size product distribution. The client was looking for distribution of 7,500 products to key taste-makers. This was a “whale” of a challenge, but Sandbox brings vast “oceans” of experience to the table.

SOLUTION: This activation needed to be mobile, so Sandbox proposed building a mobile brand activation that could safely activate near beaches and boardwalk environments where you have a large population base in the heart of summer. This mobile activation would consist of a 4 wheel cargo bicycle that featured a thematic custom foam sculpted chair. This would support our Mermaid and her tail. In the rear of this 4 wheeled bicycle beauty, we mounted a storage box that would allow our team to carry enough samples without having to restock quickly. Our lovely Mermaid would be accompanied by our handsome male brand ambassador for even more female draw. A “Mer-Man”, if you will. He would also be tasked with pedaling this mobile activation. Good thing we gave him a multi-speed bike.

Our Mermaid and Mer-Man would engage consumers in high traffic beach locations like Jones Beach, Coney Island, Six Flags NJ, Asbury Park and Times Square in the northeast. We would also visit the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago during the Air & Sea show that sees over a million consumers attend the event. On the West Coast, we would hit key locations in the LA, Orange County and San Diego Markets. In Los Angeles, we visited Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Redondo Beach and Hermosa Beach. We also made a special trip to Long Beach for the Red Bull Flugtag event, which had a great built in audience. In Orange County, we hit the beaches hard in Huntington and Newport Beach. Lastly, in San Diego, we were sharing the Mermaid love at Ocean Beach, La Jolla and Pacific Beach.

Consumers were ecstatic to see a Mermaid in their presence. Most were genuinely surprised and this was our brand conversation starter.

Sandbox custom built each of the elements, including the Mermaid tails and sea shell bras (in different sizes, of course). Even our Mer-Man shirts were handmade by the Sandbox crew to match the beach tripppin’ product colors. People absolutely loved the presentation and were very willing to take a picture with our Mermaid and share on their social media channels. The opportunity was so unique that the value proposition was easy. Our team also asked consumers to LIKE the göt2b Facebook page and follow göt2b on Twitter and Instagram. All posts were tagged with #beachtrippin so that we could track shares.

Once consumers shared their photos on all of their social media channels, and spent their social currency with our team, they were given a full size göt2b product for their efforts. Although many would tell you that is wasn’t really an effort. This program was highly successful and created a huge social media footprint. Talk to one, but speak to thousands. This program did just that.

JOURNEYS - BACKYARD BBQ CHALLENGE: You are THE destination for teen footwear in the mall. How do you speak to your target teen and young adult audience at their level and create an event that encompasses all aspects of their lives? Music, Action Sports, Technology, Art and Fashion. Oh…and create a direct drive back to retail to bump that sales needle. No worries, we’ve got this.

SOLUTION: You create a mall based retail-tainment event called the Journeys Backyard BBQ in which you invite all of your premium brands to participate and throw one heck of a good party in mall parking lots across the USA. Sandbox Marketing did just that for 7 years for the Journeys footwear retail chain. This Sandbox Marketing proprietary property would draw over 512,000 live audience in 7 years.

Creating a free, all ages event that takes place in accessible mall parking lots was just what the doctor ordered for teens and young adults all across the country. The Journeys Backyard BBQ leveraged existing Journeys brands like Converse, Vans, DC Shoes, Toms and Osiris. Sandbox also procured outside sponsorship partners like göt2b, Coast Body Wash, Invisalign, Hi-Chew, Verizon Wireless and others to participate in the events. Major action sports athletes participated like Rob Dydrek, Shaun White, Dave Mirra, Ryan Nyquist, Tony Hawk, Bam Margera, Tony Alva, Christian Hosoi and Ryan Sheckler to name a few. In addition, the Metal Mulisha Freestyle Motocross demo team performed at all 43 Journeys Backyard BBQ events and drove the crowds crazy. BMX, Skateboarding and FMX demos were a great draw for the free events. Have you ever seen a Metal Mulisha Freestyle Motocross show when they are backflipping right in front of you? Most people have not and this made the Journeys Backyard BBQ events very appealing to consumers. It also made Journeys register on the Teen radar when it comes to cool brands.

Music, Fashion and Art all culminated on the main stage with acts like All American Rejects, POD, Taking Back Sunday, Hot Chelle Rae and Circa Survive all played on the BBQ main stage. Also, Sandbox sourced local acts to compete in the Converse Battle of the Bands where they had a chance to play with major acts and have a chance to have their videos played in all of the 850 Journeys retail locations.

Topping all of these activities off was a huge social media push with all of Journeys social media channels. Twitter contests, Facebook sweepstakes and the (Sandbox managed) “Journeys Feet on the Street Team” that drove awareness and impressions at all of the local high schools and colleges all helped to drive Journeys current Facebook likes of over 2 million likes.

The results for these events speak for themselves. For 7 years, the Journeys Backyard BBQ was the premier mall based retail-tainment events that many other brands and retailers have mirrored. Sandbox Marketing produced the Journeys Backyard BBQ events as a completely turnkey solution for the client.

COLLEGE MARKETING CHALLENGE: Benefit Cosmetics charged Sandbox Marketing with creating a college based activation that centered around their core brand theme, which is humor. Benefit Cosmetics loves to keep things light and fun with their brand and this activation had to align with the brand messaging. Sampling the new pore minimizer, Porefessional, would need to be a key component of the activation. Lastly, the brand experience needed to position Benefit in the selection set of our target female college consumer, and create a drive to purchase, both now and in the future. Sound like a fun challenge?

SOLUTION: The challenge was on, but since we like to have fun here in The Sandbox, this was going to be easy. Sandbox proposed creating a game show styled activation based on the TV game show, Make You Laugh. Since this was a college tour, we called it Make U Laugh. Catchy…right? The activation theme that was determined by the creative team at Benefit was Tiki, which is always fun.

This activation would be split into three appealing segments. Part one would involve our draw to the activation. A young, cute male comedian who would bring female contestants up on the small Tiki themed and Benefit branded stage and attempt to make them laugh within 60 seconds. Telling jokes, singing the Titanic theme song, staring deep into their eyes…nothing was off the table, as long as it was all clean humor. If the consumers could keep a straight face for 60 seconds, they would win a full size Porefessional product valued at $30. It was not as easy as it sounds, as our resident comedian Adam had them rolling in the audience. The second part of the activation would encourage trial and sampling of Benefit products. Small size foil packs of Porefessional were handed out by our local beauty cuties and ladies lined up to have a shot at trying various lines of Benefit products. Lastly, since this was all about having fun, we brought in tons of props and created a photo booth activity. Sandbox brought in their proprietary photo booth technology that allows consumers to take photos, view them on an iPad and then provides a unique alphanumeric code. Consumers could then retrieve, customize and share their Benefit themed Tiki photos on their social media channels. By offering a unique photo opportunity, the photo retrieval rates are always higher than other activations. Every consumer who attended had a great time, and for many who did not know the Benefit brand, they have now positioned it in their selection set. That’s no joke.

Sandbox worked together with their network of collegiate schools to partner with Welcome Week activities to guarantee large events and great foot traffic at the activation. The Benefit Make U Laugh Tour made stops at the following schools on this amazing national mobile marketing tour: UC Berkeley, Arizona State, Texas A&M, Georgia State, George Mason, Virginia Tech, DePaul, Ohio State, UC Santa Barbara and UCLA.
