POSITION STATEMENT

AN INTERVENTION To create a public park following a pedestrian’s/ cyclist’s linear journey, snaking under, through and over the Mancunian way: connecting a series of public leisure spaces (e.g., outdoor theatre and playground).

An intervention that encourages people to walk and interact with the city using the Mancunian way as a transition space, therefore, promoting well-being through the journey of movement.

A journey for cars to a journey for people...

DISCOVER

John Haines: Managing Director at Projekt.

The interview took place on the 17th of September 2020.

Projekt MCR is a skate part situated at the start of the Mancunian way adjacent to the new Mayfield Development and Piccadilly station. What could be argued as a successful intervention, the park’s friendly environment draws skaters in from across the city.

John stated that he found that the key for making a successful intervention beneath the Mancunian Way is to prioritise how the space can become welcoming and safe for the most vulnerable in our society, therefore all will be comfortable in the space. The space needs to be an invitation for people to join and draw them in. He stated that “The spaces need to be beautiful”.

As a user of the city, he thought that the Mancunian Way needs “more trees” and in creating spaces we must ask - Does this say Manchester?

John Lee: Senior Lecturer at Manchester School of Architecture; Owner of Arca.

The interview took place on the 17th of September 2020.

John Lee was the architect that designed the skate park Projekt. He also designed the Mancunian Way Footbridge on the opposite end of the site. He has experience designing both on top and below the Mancunian Way. He explained lots of regulatory information about designing with the Mancunian Way, such as the clearance height of 5.7m above the road for any intervention and the need to keep the structure exposed to all the highway to be checked and surveyed.

He also discussed some of the design approaches he thought were key when dealing with the highway. For example, the need or each intervention to connect to the various fragments of the city.

THE JOURNEY

TRANSITIONS

Through site visits it was observed that there was no linear access for pedestrians or cyclists following along the Mancunian Way like cars have. Although the Mancunian way is the ‘Link Road’ of the city, those travelling by foot cannot use its main purpose of quick, linear access through the city. By creating access for those on foot, it will reduce the need for cars in the city and therefore, reduce Manchester’s carbon footprint, as well as encourage fitness and well-being for its citizens.

THE HILL Can creating wonder, curiosity and theatre in an outdoor setting, evoke positive emotions and change the city to act in response to climate change and well-being?

A key response from site visits was that the Mancunian formed a series of hills across the landscape of Manchester, due to the transition of levels.

How can we allow people to travel along this landscape with the cars?

EXPERIENCE These are visual expressions of the atmospheres that were picked up on from site visits. They identify key locations along the site that could be potential spots for interventions.

Factors that were considered in determining these spaces include: exposure to the weather and shelter, lighting, sound and surrounding context.

SECTIONING SITES AND COMMUNITIES

ACTIVATING THE CITY When the city is sectioned by programme, key groups are identified which can be used to determine the programme for interventions.

The drawing below indicates the surrounding context of the site. It determines the need for public realm along the Mancunian way. The interventions will be decided depending on the needs of the surrounding fragments of the city.

The grey fill identifies the various segments that the interventions are targeting. These segments were isolated due to their proximity to the site and the various user groups. For example isolating the residential units in right hand segment.

The fragments of the city determine the programme as well as the flow of the ramp that allows the transition between the spaces.

The interventions will be places between the structure of the Mancunian way. It is more sustainable to keep the Mancunian Way and build around it rather than demolishing it, to save latent energy from its original construction.

The diagrams on the right show how the overarching walkway interacts with the site, fragments and surrounding context.

PIECING THE FRAGMENTS

CONNECTIONS These fragments have been used to identify the programme of each interventions.

Intervention 1 : Proposes a play space for younger children - responding to the surrounding fragment of residential family homes.

Intervention 2: Proposes an outdoor cafe and garden space - responding to the university building segment to the north, due to the lack of green and rest space in the area.

Intervention 3: Proposes an outdoor theatre - responding to a mix of living, university and cultural spaces - its the peak of the Mancunian way journey and draws in all citizens of the city.

Intervention 4: Proposes a market space - responding to the student accommodation and residential housing encouraging economic growth in the city.

Intervention 5: Proposes an outdoor exercise park responding to the surrounding living spaces and the lack of locations for exercise.

Fun Palace was created for the East End of London as a “laboratory of fun” and “a university of the streets.” It was never realized although designed with the full intention of being built (Cedric Price. Fun Palace for Joan Littlewood Project, Stratford East, London, England (Perspective).

1959–1961 | MoMA, 2013). Through the ‘Fun Palace’ design, the open grid structure would allow complete flexibility in programme.

The first Luna Park opened in Coney Island in New York. The concept resembles an amusement centre with the stretch illuminated by floodlights, named after the fanciful ship ‘Luna’. This brought an element of surrealism and imagination to design.

The original concept for the 2000 Dutch Pavilion involved stacking six Dutch landscapes into a tower on a single portion of the site, with the rest of the surrounding area leaving an open outdoor space. The building became a self-contained ecosystem, which incorporated nature and generated its own internal resource cycles. (MVRDV - Expo Pavilion 2.0, 2020).

The use of access and connections between layers is particularly appealing towards providing precedent in exploring vertical access and functionality in a horizontal structure, such as the Mancunian way.

The idea of an elongated stretch of exciting structures could be applied to various interventions along the Mancunian Way, if not to the whole ramp.

This conceptual design explores a reconfigurable elevated walkway to reduce crowd densities and support social distancing measures. It is a temporary prefabricated structure that can quickly be assembled and demounted as multiple sites for different events. This flexible structure includes a meandering walkway with separate viewing platforms and access ramps at each end. (Concept design to support social distancing at large-scale events – Latest – ElliottWood, 2020).

The project revitalises the Gardiner, a motorway in Canada, as a valuable public amenity rather than an urban throwaway space. They deal with various interventions along the site, including a skating trail and a flexible gathering hub.

The Underline follows a 10 mile park and urban trail beneath Miami’s MetroRail. The design follows through the route of an existing bike trail, winding through various ecosystems, shaded by “native plants that provide habitats for birds and butterflies“ (McKnight, 2015).

The assembly of this project could be used due to the temporary nature of the brief. There are lots of opportunities for interaction in this design, whether that be below, on a viewing platform or the ramp itself.

The way in which their interventions interact with the existing structure is particularly interesting. Although, their spaces touch the frame of the highway, they do not break into or combine with it. This approach could be used with the Mancunian Way. To have interventions that are close enough to touch but do not interfere with the existing structure, therefore being more sustainable and preserving the heritage of the Mancunian Way.

The idea of a linear park links with the intervention that is in thought.

By having cyclists and pedestrians able to access the same route, it encourages all modes of foot travel and allows for easier design of a ramp. They use the existing structure to determine the flow of the trail.

This intervention explores a play space aimed at children.

This targets the families in the homes surrounding this part of the site and allows the children to have a space in which they can interact with the park.

This design reflects a community garden space that allows users to come and eat and rest, linking those in university and in the residential areas around the site.

Inspired by how The Tree Line by ReForm Architects, uses layers for users to interact between. The Bentway and Luna Park also inspire how users are taken on a horizontal and vertical journey.

‘Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time’

SYMPHONY This space is a open air theatre within the park. It shows the congregation of users within the space to experience a piece of performance as one. It is intended to bring the fragments of the city together at the peak and centre of the Mancunian way, a symphony.

The Dutch Pavilion by MVDRV emphasises the ‘stacked landscape’ through the layers and typography of the space.

‘Community is about doing something together, that makes belonging matter’

IMMERSE This space shows a market centre within the park. It brings together the variety of cultures within the city and provides a space for eat and drink, which is not currently present along the Mancunian Way, as well as a space for economic growth within the city.

The horizontal programme of the Luna Park influences how users travel and transition across the spaces.

BREATHE This is the final destination along the Mancunian Way’s linear journey. The visual shows the walkway coming to an end within the final destination of an exercise space in the park. This will be accessed by the surrounding residential areas.

PRECEDENT: YueCheng Courtyard Kindergarten, Beijing, MAD Architects, 2020 This design explores the roof of a kindergarten, which has become a playful landscape of several smalls skills of various colours for the children. It provides a space for engagement in outdoor activities that is broken by a series of courtyards that puncture the roof, some of which contain stairs, ramps and slides to get between the kindergarten and the rooftop play area.

The design of punching through a landscape could be implemented in the ramps design, with the play space interacting with levels through this way.

PRECEDENT: Museum Park of The the Polytechnic Museum, Moscow, Wowhaus, 2019 The Polytechnic Museum uses a pedestrian zone and public space to draw city dwellers in via the Museum Park. An open-air foyer that will become an extension of the spaces inside the building and will act as a prologue through the use of the park-amphitheatre.

The design of the rafter like seating will work well with the ramp intervention across the Mancunian Way, as it will be able to grow from the ramp and enhances the use of levels across the site, while providing comfortable seating for watching performances.

The adjacent diagram illustrates the precedent with the components from the outdoor theatre of the 2nd intervention. It shows how this type of seating can allow a large use of the space and views from and off the ramp.

Spanish Steps, Roma, Francesco de Sanctis 1725

The Spanish Steps is a world famous location that not only provides access to iconic architecture, like Trinita dei Monti, but is a public gathering space that has become an open air landmark. It hosts a variety of programmes including seasonal events, such a summer fashion shows.

The combination of landing and blocks provides spaces for gathering which could be used in an intervention growing from the ramp.

PRECEDENT: SoMa West Skate and Dog Park, San Fransisco, Public Works, 2009 This multi-use park situated in an underpass includes a sanctioned space for skaters to shred and a little artificial turn for letting city dogs run around. The use of levels in the space creates an exciting landscape for skaters.

This use of alternating levels can be used to establish spatial hierarchy within the space to establish sections and spaces within the exercise park.

It shows different exercises being carried out at different sections and levels of the skate park. The fluctuating landscape can be used to determine locations for each equipment/ action.

WALKWAY

TRANSFORM New layers will be designed to interact with the existing Mancunian Way structure that flow over, below and in-between.

This will identify a layer for pedestrians and cyclists within the car’s landscape of the Mancunian Way. Much like the example of the MVRDV Dutch Pavilion, the concept of ‘stacked landscapes’ can be used to integrate multiple levels of programme.

The example shown of the Palo Alto footbridge in San Francisco, designed by 65North Architecture uses a weathered steel structure to cover large spans and provides a clean aesthetic in the landscape.

The design of the Mancunian way ramp will use a recycled steel structure with a similar copper aesthetic to provide a durable and slender addition to the highways robust modern appearance, that can span large distances over the highway.

Pavegen Panels The Pavegen panels transform movement from walking into clean energy. This approach encourages users to walk and cycle as it allows them to be involved in making a difference and impact towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

It is a renewable and rewarding source of energy that supports the environment. This energy will be used to power the heating and lighting in the ramp as well as some of the energy use in the interventions along the journey.

The Sackler Crossing in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Kew, designed by John Pawson.

The bridge uses simple components of repeating bronze balusters and black granite treads, with lights set flush into the deck to create a beautiful sculptural object that forms part of the landscape. The use of lighting illuminates the space after dark to provide a safe and comforting environment for users with a alluring atmosphere.

From looking at various play centres and spaces for children the spaces in the below diagram have been identified as the necessary for the programme in which children from a variety of age groups come to play. The lines indicate the connections needed between the space in order to plan the form and design.

EVOLVE Sustainability

By creating a linear journey by foot across the site, it encourages the reduction of cars from traveling around the city centre. This also encourages fitness and well-being for the citizens of Manchester.

Another approach to sustainability is through allowing the ramp to generate energy to assist in powering the other interventions, through movement and grey water recycling.

This could be developed further with other energy generation methods, such as solar panels.

Resolution of Programme The overall programme of the function of the ramp needs to be resolved to have a cohesive theme running across the landscape. The interventions must link more together, so it provides a clear linear journey, not only in movement but in function too.

Enclosure An intervention will need to be resolved into an enclosed building to fit the overarching BA3 brief. This will also allow opportunities for weather proofing and sealing the intervention thermally.

End points Along the ramp there needs to be more ‘slip roads,’ like cars, to allow pedestrians and cyclists to use it as a link between various parts of the city, rather than currently only having three access and exit points.

Time Analyse how the design may change over time structurally and in use and how this will affect the building economics.
