On Sunday, May 31st, Rutgers University did something unprecedented in its illustrious 254 year history. The largest institution of higher education in New Jersey held its first (and, hopefully, only) virtual commencement, celebrating the Class of 2020 remotely during a global pandemic. NJ Governor Phil Murphy, RU President Robert Barchi, RU Chancellor Christopher Molloy, and others inspired graduates to use the knowledge and experience gained at Rutgers to go forth and rebuild the US economy and work towards a better world. Respected NBC Nightly News anchor, Lester Holt (pictured left), delivered the commencement remarks and encouraged graduates, “You can be defined by the times or you can be defined by how you lived the times.” This certainly was not the graduation celebration any of us had imagined just a few short months ago, but it was a lovely tribute to the unique Rutgers University Class of 2020. The video recognition includes video messages from Rutgers University – Newark Chancellor Nancy Cantor, Commencement Speaker Angie Martinez (pictured right), undergraduate student speaker Esder Chong ’20, and guest public officials in addition to individual, personalized recognition of graduating students and a closing photo montage featuring images submitted by members of the Class of 2020. The traditional Commencement ceremony is scheduled to be held at a later date.
