REW RD was delighted to be asked to say a few words to introduce the second printed edition of District North magazine, a first class publication, well printed with good photographs and full of interesting news.

It demonstrates that the 18 Branches are alive and well and providing help to those in need most particularly and also importantly having fun.

You are an example to all. However, the digital age is providing challenges as well as opportunities, we are reducing reduction in membership but some recruited on line do not wish to join branches, not, I think, a problem you have in Spain.

We are addressing this to hopefully ensure a strong membership as we move into our centenary. A strong membership means our campaigning voice is heard and not ignored.

To be elected by you, the members, heralding in a new era as the first woman chairman, is a most particular honour, thank you for your support and having confidence in me, I will do my best not to let you down.

The voting in the election demonstrated, I believe, that a significant number of branches felt a woman national chairman was a step too far, I hope to prove them wrong. The Legion is like a family with “ups and downs� but we must always be there for one another in comradeship and care for those in need.

The Legion is working well with other charities, as you do in Spain and observed by me during my several visits, and we have demonstrated this nationally with our leadership of The Veterans Gateway, nobody has the monopoly of common sense.

This applies to us all, including the Board of Trustees, we will be “good listeners� nice to hear what we have done well but more importantly to consider what we could do better.

Official events to mark the 75th anniversary of the Normandy landings 4

Events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of DDay in Normandy and Portsmouth, including the charter of a special ship, have been announced today by the Ministry of Defence, The Royal British Legion and Portsmouth City Council.

D-Day 75 veterans to be at the heart of commemorations

The plans were announced in Portsmouth with a visit to the D-Day Story Museum by Vice Chief of the Defence Staff General Sir Gordon Messenger.

procured by funds from The Royal British Legion and a LIBOR grant from HM Treasury, will then transport veterans across the channel to Normandy escorted by a Royal Navy vessel, representing their famous crossing 75 years before.

Commonly referred to as D-Day, the Normandy Landings began on the 6 June 1944, when allied forces launched a combined naval, air and land assault on occupied Europe.

Events will be held in Normandy and around the UK this June. Portsmouth, where much of the landing force sailed from in 1944, will be the focal point of the UK commemorations and will host the UK national event on 5 June. The council is also planning a series of events over 5 days to reflect the area’s unique role in one of the largest and wellknown military operations ever.

The commemorative event will include a military parade along the seafront, music including performances by military bands, readings by VIP's and a flypast featuring period aircraft. Other features will include a Royal Collection Trust exhibition, screenings to show the Normandy Commemorations live and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. The first 'Portsmouth Revival festival' celebrating the food, music, dancing and vehicles of the time will also be held. Portsmouth’s activity will culminate in a Sunset Concert for Heroes, acts include the Military Wives Choir and the D-Day Darlings.

Before sunset on the 5 June, MV Boudicca, a specially-chartered ship for 300 Normandy veterans,

The ship will accommodate the veterans for the duration of their visit to Normandy and is being provided to the veterans at no cost. Veterans who wish to travel on the ship should contact The Royal British Legion to register interest.

The key events will include an inauguration at the site of the Normandy Memorial Trust’s British Normandy Memorial and The Royal British Legion’s services at Bayeux Cathedral and Bayeux Cemetery before concluding with an evening of music and entertainment beside the beaches in Arromanches. Throughout the commemorations around 2000 current serving personnel will offer support to veterans both in the UK and in France, while also taking part in the various ceremonial events.

Combined with the launch the Defence Secretary has written an open letter to Normandy veterans and the wider community seeking help from any member of the public who may know a Normandy veteran, and asking them to contact The Royal British Legion to ensure they are aware of plans to commemorate D-Day and how veterans can participate should they wish to.

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said: “75

years ago the forces of 13 Allied countries gathered in Britain before launching the historic operation to liberate Europe. Winston Churchill rightly said that D-Day was “undoubtedly the most complicated and difficult” operation that had ever taken place. This June we will show our veterans that the debt to them is never forgotten for the price they paid for the freedom and peace we now enjoy.”

The Royal British Legion’s Commemorative Events Lead, Bob Gamble OBE: said: “As we mark 75 years since the largest seaborne invasion the world has ever seen we salute the bravery and sacrifice of all those who took part in liberating Europe. We invite those who wish to attend the events to commemorate their historic achievements to get in touch with the Legion and join our all costs covered journey by ship back to France.

The veterans will be the VIPs at this event and we will make sure their every need is catered for as they travel back to Normandy to take part in this landmark event.”

Cllr Gerald Vernon Jackson, Leader, Portsmouth Council said: “This June the city will be the focal point for reflection on the events of 1944. Veterans, military personnel and civilians will commemorate those lost and celebrate the achievements of the operation that sailed from Portsmouth 75 years ago. It's fitting that we're revealing the programme of events for D-Day 75 at The D-Day Story - the museum which has captured the human stories of those involved in that epic event.”

The D-Day Story opened last year after a £5m National Lottery-supported transformation and is the only museum in the UK dedicated to the Allied Invasion in June 1944.

For Benidorm Branch and St George

Words by PDT Photo by Stefan Bodnarec On 23rd April members of the BENIDORM AND DISTRICT BRANCH were invited to join Alfaz del Pi residents to celebrate St. George’s day.

The venue - Almaffra in Alfaz - was an ideal location for the event with restaurant, cafĂŠ and bar as well as live entertainment.

The branch arranged a table of memorabilia, flags and their own shopping bags. This was very well supported by the all those who had arrived to enjoy the day and support their heritage Around 800 tickets were sold and so many stopped at the Legion table to donate.

Branch members manning the table remarked that it proves the efficacy of supporting these local fairs and events in the Community.

As a lover of farce, I found the absurdity of the piece, thoroughly entertaining. All the cast were well rehearsed under Lorraine Latchford and Julie Cooke’s direction. Anna Woodham as Lady Doreen and Barbara Colclough as Pawn kept the gaffe-filled plot moving along nicely. Thankfully Joe Logan, playing Daphne, disguised his masculinity well within a badly tailored tennis skirt: but reinvented himself in the closing scene as an Astronaut wearing a domestic hot water heater as a back pack!

By Peter Broadbent DIVAs (Drama in the Valley Association), a fledgling Amateur Dramatic Society in the Hondón Valley, recently staged McGillivray & Zerlin’s ‘Murder at Checkmate Manor’. A production that included scripted missed entrances, an undisciplined set, miss-timed sound effects, seemingly off-the-cuff dialogue and uncertain lighting, proved to be an entertaining and adventurous choice for their first production.

Thankfully, the support of the Hondón de los Frailes Ayuntamiento and a small, but effective team of support staff, made everything possible.

Seven of those taking part were members of the local Hondón Valley Branch. The brilliant Sandra Ward, as the scripted Chairperson, heralded the start of a production that occasionally reminded me of the fondly remembered ‘Acorn Antiques’. The nine member cast, gainfully played the numerous characters and

Along with his “sister” Patricia de Ste Croix, Len Simm had one of the least demanding roles as a wheel-chaired curmudgeon, later playing the family solicitor. Last, but by no means least, Peggy Wyatt, as a Cook in an inflatable suit, was an extraordinary sight.

Jacqueline Logan, the ‘prompter’, unashamedly sitting amongst the audience, was only required once to my knowledge: but I could be wrong ... not knowing if her intervention was necessary or scripted. Judging by the reaction of those sitting around me, everybody enjoyed the performance. I hope that DIVAs continues to entertain us for years to come: particularly those like me, who lack the ambition ... or talent to ‘tread-the-boards’ themselves!

EDRO DOMINGUEZ and BEATRIZ LARA work for the Spanish Red Cross and the Casa Verde Foundation respectively and over many years they have both been absolutely invaluable in co-ordinating the works of local expat charities with those of their own.

Pedro, from Cruz Roja in Alicante, has a specific responsibility for expats and their needs and over the last 4 or 5 years he has helped to improve the lives of many hundreds of veterans and their dependants on the Costa Blanca.

He is an English speaker and will help those who are in need to obtain pendant alarms throughout the whole of Spain as he will also provide assistance and help with energy and food poverty.

veterans and their dependants in numerous ways by assisting in training new and existing caseworkers as she guides them through the minefield that is the Spanish health care and Social Services system.

Lara has also helped personally by providing specialist help, advice and action to support individual beneficiaries.

In gratitude for their efforts, particularly with the welfare teams and members of The

Royal British Legion, the pair were recently presented with well-deserved Certificates of Appreciation by Don Cubbon, the Chairman of Spain North, in front of the whole of the District Committee.

By way of introduction The change of District Secretary will take place at the next District Committee Meeting in June. Peter Phillips will hand over to Judith Williams, a short introduction of whom is below: Introducing the new District Secretary My name is Judith Williams, but most people call me ‘Jude’. I am most excited to be given the opportunity to work alongside the team at District North Spain. I was born in Cardiff, Wales and Educated there. The British Legion is important to me, as my Father was a member of the Royal Air Force during the Second World War and I know of the positive things the British Legion did for him, so its now my turn to give something back.

My working life has seen many contrasts, I have been a Government Researcher, an Appeals and Communications Officer

with the Registered Charity ‘Weston Spirit’ ( you will have heard of Simon Weston, who was a great inspiration to me) I then moved to Managerial status in Recruiting qualified Social Workers, then to a large Dental Practice and finally a large and very busy NHS Medical Practice where I was Senior Practice Manager.

I am married to Ian, who is a Retired Traffic Police Officer. We have five Children and seven Grandchildren between us, who all keep us on our toes!

My interests include live rock music, motorcycling with my Husband and more gentler pastimes like gardening and art.

I am looking forward to meeting up with as many of the Membership as possible in the future and thank the Committee for the opportunity you have given me.

Once again there was a full house at Harry’s bar in Quesada for the Torrevieja branches St David’s day celebrations. After a fabulous Welsh meal which included lamb of course, there was poetry, singing, and plenty of laughter.

To start the entertainment a lovely moving poem was read out by the organiser of the day Mrs Dianne Budd, which was written by Mr Wm. Owen to his mother just before he went into battle in the 1st. World War and is now on display in the museum of Wales. It was made that bit more special because Mr Leo Wynn, his grandson, was present to hear it being read out.

There was some great soloist to keep us entertained and our packed room were a fantastic choir. Another fantastic St David’s day was had by all.

Torrevieja Petanca Challenge

orrevieja branch of the Royal British Legion have now set up their own petanca team and with 50 people turning up for the first game they are looking good .

Hopefully after a few more fun or should we say practise days, they are hoping to play a few friendly games against other petanca teams in the area, and possibly meet up and play against other legion branches.

The branch meet the second Friday of the month at the bowls

club in San Luis, Casa Ventura, meetings starts at 7 pm.

If anyone is interested in playing either petanca or joining our excellent bowls team the Legionnaires, we would love to see you come along, you don’t have to be ex forces to play or join .

The people on the door will give you all the information you need , plus there is usually entertainment following the short meeting.

Pinoso Branch Grand Spring Ball 2019 Once again on the 4th April the Pinoso Branch held the annual Grand Spring Ball and Dinner at the Restaurant El Timรณn, this being the 4th of these annual events

On arrival each guest was offered a glass of cava, followed by a choice of menu with wine through the meal, with the entertainment for the evening being provided by the well-known duo Bella Luna, which very quickly got everybody up on to the dance floor.

EASTER EGG HUNT

GandĂ­a Branch, TRBL, had a great day at their annual Easter Egg hunt, a great time was had by all in spite of the rain.

Everyone enjoyed the hunt and most members managed to find an egg.

This was followed by an Easter Bonnet competition, the ladies winner was Bridget Smith, the gentlemen's winner was Geoff Williams and his grandson Oliver won the junior section. This was followed with an excellent 4

course meal at Restaurante L'ortissa, in Beniganim.

Thanks to 3 raffles, 1 general, 1 Easter Basket & a homemade Easter choc cake we also raised 227.90â‚Ź for the Poppy Appeal.

olin Hindmarsh, the Chairman of the Pinoso Branch of The Royal

British Legion, handed a painting over to the Chairman, Don Cubbon, at the Annual District Conference, which had been donated by the artist Celia Vodden. It is entitled 'The Soldier’s Legacy'.

Celia's paintings have been widely exhibited in galleries in London, Dublin, Dubai, New York and Milan and can also be found in many private collections, often fetching well in excess of 2000 euro Now she spends a good part of her time working in her Jalon Valley studio in Spain where she told the RBL that she finds the ideal light in the search for bright colours. Her current collection of work is finding expression through polymer resin, which resonates with colour, texture and movement.

Each painting, of which 'The Soldier's Legacy' is one, is unique, due to the nature of the resin and cannot be replicated.

The wishes of the artist is that the painting be sold or auctioned by the RBL with the funds donated to the charity.

‘Bring Him Home’

Les Miserables A couple of years ago, Mojacar Branch member, Terry Elwick, wrote the following lyrics to the song "Bring him home" from the musical Les Miserables, to reflect the thoughts of a family with a loved one who is on active service in a danger zone.

A couple of local singers have already used them when appearing at appropriate function as well as some in UK. If other branches would like to use them for military or remembrance functions terry says that they are welcome to do do..

Hospital and housebound visitors (HHBV) and Telephone Buddies This HHBV scheme is expanding, but more volunteers are always needed to assist in this growing area.

Loneliness is difficult, especially in Spain where many of your neighbours speak only Spanish.

Long-time friends also leave and go back to the UK. The Legion therefore wants to support in terms of befriending be it in person or as a telephone buddy.

The Legion has also assisted in providing intensive Spanish lessons when someone lives in a Spanish speaking village, so they do not feel so isolated and lonely. We are also open to ideas that might suit your area and will support breakfast clubs, Lunch clubs etc for beneficiaries.

Awards for Meritorious Service presented at 2019 Spain District North Annual Conference T

wo significant events were held in Alicante lin late January by The Royal British Legion, District North Spain, the Chairman’s Seminar, which brought together Senior Officers from over a dozen branches, and the District Annual Conference, where delegates and many other representatives attended along with Officers from the United Kingdom and Belgium as well as the British Vice Consul in Alicante.

Day one of the two day event focussed on presentations from the Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary which took up most of the early session.

There were also contributions to the discussions from Heather Wilson, Membership Support Officer and the Overseas Representative, Bob Chambers.

After lunch Peggy Wyatt spoke on Recruiting and Retention, Su Shaw on Training and Pamela TwisselCross on Community Support and Welfare.

All of the contributions were extremely enlightening and attendees went away far more knowledgeable and with lots of information to pass down on returning to their branches.

The following day saw the Annual Conference attended by 40 or more officers as well as the representatives from UK, Belgium and the British Vice Consul, Sara Munsterhjelm.

Following the welcome and opening address, the District Chairman, Don Cubbon, spoke of the welfare support provided in this part of Spain to potentially, 38,000 families. He spoke also about the importance of spreading the word and of making people aware of the RBL’s existence in Spain and of the role it can play in helping them in times of need.

The Chairman was followed onto the floor by the Community Support coordinator, Pamela Twissel-Cross who touched further on the welfare aspects provided by the RBL. Pam gave way to Robert Lee who had travelled out from Haigh House in London.

Delegates and guests at the 2019 District Conference

Robert is the Assistant Director, Remembrance and National Events, the individual who puts together the Annual Remembrance Service broadcast to millions every November on the BBC, from the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Robert spoke about the plans for 2019 and particularly the Khadi Poppy of which 2.5 million will be distributed in remembrance of India’s WW2 role. He mentioned the support provided to veterans and their families at the recent Invictus Games in Australia before briefing the room on the opening of the new £300m Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre which will be based at Stanford Hall, near Loughborough.

He then concluded by explaining how the RBL is increasingly providing support to the families of Commonwealth veterans who are living in poverty, particularly on the Indian sub-Continent.

Following a further presentation by British Vice Consul, Sara Munsterhjelm and a video of GP 90, where 1,150 branches and thousands of members and representatives from the UK and abroad help recreated the pilgrimage by WW1 veterans and war widows to the Menin Gate in Ypres on 8 August 1928, a number of awards were presented for meritorious and long service to Pamela Dawson Tasker, Jean Chattey and Robin Hargrave.

Robin also collected the Poppy Appeal Award on behalf of the Gran Alacant and La Marina Branch after which he then announced the total amount raised during the 2018 Poppy Appeal, 176,084 euros, an increase of 9,000 euro on the sum raised in 2017.

The meeting was concluded by the playing of the national anthems of the UK and Spain prior to the marching out of the District Standards.

Calpe Branch Presented with Recruiting & Retention Award

The District North Recruiting and Retention Award is presented annually to The Royal British Legion Branch with the most improved membership over the previous three years.

The 2018 Award was recently presented to Carl Gullis, Branch Chairman at Calpe, and Norman Hodgkiss, Membership Secretary, by Peggy Wyatt, former County Recruiting Officer.

Carl Gullis said “I am thrilled to have received this Award, which has come as a complete surprise and will be a great boost to the Branch. I would like to pay tribute to our hardworking Committee and very supportive members. Our events are always well attended and we regularly welcome new members to the Branch.�

Peggy Wyatt, who initiated this Award in January 2010, said she was delighted that Calpe Branch had been recognised this year. It is testament to all the hard work undertaken over the years. They are a friendly Branch and this has borne fruit when it comes to recruiting. They have also taken great

steps to retain their members, some of whom holiday in the area.

Certificate of Appreciation Pamela Dawson Tasker BEM is well known on the Costa Blanca and beyond, for her charity work. She has been associated with The Royal British Legion in Spain since 1982 and as well as serving on the District North Committee, she has worked tirelessly for the Benidorm and District Branch, having also been a founding member of the Branch.

Pam is one of those rare people who has dedicated much time and energy to various causes over a good number of years and in 2014 she was recognised as such for her considerable volunteer work with the award of the British Empire Medal by HM The Queen.

Although Pam has now decided to retire from the District Committee, she is still very active in supporting the Benidorm and District Branch and can be seen at many events in the local area.

Moorish afternoon for Gran Alacant A

band of intrepid members of the Gran Alacant and La Marina Branch of the Royal British Legion in Spain, recently visited the Carmen del Campillo Arabian Teahouse in the late afternoon.

Seemingly in the middle of nowhere, but very close to the main road from Crevillente to Albatera, this Moroccan oasis is like nothing we had ever seen before. A haven of tranquillity and shade.

Inside the decorative gates, there are exotic gardens illuminated by arabian lanterns as dusk approached, and a large winding property with a labyrinth of different furnished rooms, some with roaring log fires.

There are peacocks roaming the grounds, piped Arabian music and a tepee on one of the terraces of the tea house.

The gardens are woven intricately throughout the house, with trees even poking out through the roof.

We rested our legs in the courtyard, with wonderfully coloured shrubs, vines, and ferns dan-

gling all around us. There we partook of various teas and fruit smoothies, accompanied by nutty pastries dripping with honey.

Hunting for

Treasure Javea branch had a Car treasure Hunt from Javea to Nou Portet restaurant in Murla on 20th February .17 people took part with yours truly setting the course and a table top quiz.

We were blessed with beautiful weather and the course wound its way through a lot of the blossom in bloom at the moment in the Val de Pop. Excellent food in a friendly environment,the only black mark on the day was our President Roger and his wife our treasurer won both the Treasure hunt AND the quiz!!!

Jumilla Spring Wine Festival 2019 On Saturday 13th April a coach full of RBL Pinoso Branch Members together with family and friends went along to the annual Wine Fiesta in the lovely town of Jumilla.

It was a glorious, sunny day and we spent a wonderful 3 hours tasting the locally produced wines, sampling tapas and chatting with the Spanish people who made us all so welcome.

This year there were more bodegas offering their wines for tasting so the usual venue was changed to the paved roadway opposite the park, this made it less congested and easier to get access to the particular bodegas people wished to sample wine from.

A merry group made their way home after a special afternoon spent taking part in a lovely Spanish tradition.

hen members and guests of the Hondón Valley Branch of The Royal British Legion sat down for their Burns’ Night Supper, little did they know just what a great evening was planned. The venue was El Nuevo Valle, in Hondón de los Frailes and the MC for the evening was Ronnie Mannall.

The piper, Tony Dolphin, did us proud and got us all in the Scottish spirit.

Ronnie recounted the life of Scotland’s National Poet – Robert Burns and we then celebrated in a way Burns would have approved – eating, drinking, music, piping and poetry (and of couse, the craic!)

The haggis was piped in by Tony, which we toasted with a “ wee dram “ of whiskey, before tucking into Scotch broth , Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, steak pie, topping off the meal with Boozy Trifle, coffee and Scottish Butter Tablet.

A number of members took part reading poems and the “Toast to the Lassies” by Joe Logan and “Response” by Carol were particularly entertaining. Following the meal Carol had prepared a super Scottish Quiz where members grouped into Clans.

Tricky questions but very “educational” – for those Sassenachs among us! After the various toasts we all linked arms for Auld Lang Syne. A really enjoyable and memorable evening.

British troops were deployed onto the streets of Northern Ireland on the 14 August 1969, in response to growing sectarian unrest.

The military campaign was code named OP BANNER and the General Service Medal (Northern Ireland) was awarded to over 300, 000 Service personnel that were deployed into Northern Ireland over the subsequent 38 years.

In total, 1,441 UK Armed Forces personnel died as result of operations in Northern Ireland or paramilitary actions in other countries. All of their names are listed on the Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum.

The Royal British Legion will host a commemorative event on Wednesday 14 August 2019 to mark the 50th anniversary of the UK Armed Forces’ deployment on operations in Northern Ireland – the longest continuous campaign in British military history. The event will be held at the National Memorial Arboretum.

EXPO TORREVIEJA

The fifth edition of Expo Torrevieja attracted more than an estimated 8,000 visitors over a mid March weekend. The largest International event of its kind took place in the foyer of Torrevieja’s International Auditorium, with many of the visitors entering the auditorium for the very first time.

Volunteers from the RBL Concert Band as well as the Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa and District Branches were on hand during both days to provide information and merchandising to musicians and potential members.

Hondón Valley Meeters and Greeters When you visit Hondón Valley Branch now you will be met by two of our members in their “Welcome” sashes. If you are new to the Legion/Branch then you will be taken care of and introduced to our members.

Going Potty in Agost The Gran Alacant & La Marina branch of the Royal British Legion recently enjoyed a day trip to Agost.

Known as the Pottery Village, Ceramics have been made here for the last two centuries.

However our visit was not to one of the still operational potteries, but to the Museo de Cantereria.

A museum housed in a former ceramic factory, which has been adapted to the needs of 21st century tourism.

On our guided tour, we were able to see firsthand an extensive collection of objects for daily use, from the earliest to the presentday. We learned of the process of making the pottery, and lived the experience of entering an “Arab Kiln”. We saw the potters wheels of various heights and sizes. And the enormous outside basins which were used for the decantation of the clay.

After the tour, we moved on to a local restaurant, where we were royally wined and dined.

Alicante Branch Members Recruiting Day in Castalla International Jack Kemp and William King from Alicante Branch organised an RBL Meet and Greet in Castalla International (CI) on Thursday 2 May. Since the closure of the La Foia branch it was noted that many members of the local community, who were formally members of the La Foia Branch, were missing out on what the RBL has to offer and were keen to join the Alicante branch.

Five new members signed up on the day with another three attending the next meeting in June before joining. William has been in the local area for over 10 years and is a valuable asset when it comes to the local community and potential new members, along with gentle persuasion from Jack it is hoped that the Alicante Branch will grow in strength.

The Branch meetings are held on the First Thursday of even numbered months at the International Club, Camino Real de Villajoyosa 11, La Font, El Campello commencing at 12:30pm with a social lunch after the meeting.

Introducing the new District Parade Marshal Jack Kemp

I have been in Spain now with my wife Mary for a little over a year after completing 40 years in the Army, 32 years with the Royal Artillery in the ranks of Gunner to Major and the last 8 years with 1st Military Working Dog Regiment finishing as the Second-in-Command of the Regiment.

the Benidorm Poppy Appeal Launch last year, little did I know that Neil and possibly a few others were spotting me for another appointment, sure enough a few weeks later I was asked to consider applying for the impending appointment as District Parade Marshal from Neil.

Firstly, I would like to that Neil Pavitt for the last five years as the District Parade Marshal, a fantastic achievement and an appointment that he informed me that he thoroughly enjoyed, I have big shoes to fill as I note how respected he is by all the RBL Standard Bearers.

I now look forward to serving the RBL in Spain. My father was the Crowborough RBL Standard Bearer, so I was keen to take on the appointment of Alicante Standard Bearer from Michael Rushbrook thereby allowing him to concentrate on the Branch Sectary responsibilities and of course follow in my father’s footsteps so to speak. My first Parade was

I hope in time to meet all the Standard Bearers, hopefully starting with the Armed Forces Day Parade which will be held in Orihuela Cathedral on Saturday 29 June.

The UK Armed Forces Veterans ID Card Launched on 18th February 2019 A NEW ID CARD for armed forces veterans, which will help them access specialist support and services, has started to be issued to service leavers.

This card will provide proof that a Veteran has served in HM Armed Forces in line with the Government definition of a Veteran, which is one day’s service.

Currently, there is no way for existing Veterans to easily prove the fact that they have served, and the administrative burden on providers when verifying that a person is a Veteran can be considerable, both in time and cost. This card will allow organisations to confidentially verify that someone has served in the Armed Forces.

The cards allow veterans to easily verify their service to the NHS, their local authority, and charities, helping them to access support and services where needed.

Delivery will be rolled out in two tranches Phase 1: From today, any personnel who have left the military since December 2018 will automatically be given one of the new ID cards,

which will allow them to maintain a tangible link to their career in the forces.

Phase 2: Applications from the wider Veteran Community will be encouraged once the process has been agreed. Information on how to apply will be made available closer to the time, before the end of 2019.

There is no need to register an interest in the cards at this stage.

More information will announced by the MOD on how existing veterans can apply for a card later in the year.

Piping in the haggis at Mojacar On Friday 25 January, Mojacar Branch held a very successful Burns Night Dinner in conjunction with a restaurant , Kukis, on the Playa. 73 people attended, 40 of them through the Branch.

A Scottish themed 3 course menu was offered, with a “Dram” to toast in the Haggis. It was ceremonially carried in by Richard, the restaurant owner and chef, and addressed by a “real Scot” in kilt, followed by the stabbing of the Haggis.

After the meal, there was a disco run by a Scottish gentleman, who had many of us up and dancing.

A visitor to the evening commented on what a warm welcome he had received from Branch

members and how enjoyable the evening was – recruitment?!

Our lovely ladies in tartan raised 200€ through the raffle which will go to Poppy Appeal.

The day prior to Burns Night, we had our usual monthly coffee morning, this time held in Casa Juan restaurant and 38 people attended, the most - so far – for one of these increasingly popular events.

Recent events included two quizzes. The first was in Palomares which is a regular event before moving on to Los Gallardos camp site with our so helpful quiz master, Tony Matthews and at which local singer, Kay Francis, performed as a favour to the Branch.

This was accompanied by a buffet organised by the camp site.

Can you help trace the family of a missing World War 2 soldier?

The MOD’s Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre is searching for male family members of a British soldier who was killed in action in October 1944.

A British soldier was killed in action in October 1944 and for just over 70 years he lay where he fell until his remains were uncovered in 2015. Several years’ worth of research has produced a short list of potential candidates that may help uncover the identity of this brave man.

The MOD’s Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC) is searching for male family members of 2 of the potential candidates who were from Manchester. DNA samples have been taken from the remains and JCCC want to try and confirm the identity by comparing this sample with a member of each of the families of the 2 potential candidates.

Both soldiers served with the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers and were killed during the Allied Gothic Line Offensive in Italy on 23 October 1944, during the battle to capture Monte Spaduro.

FUSILIER JOSEPH FRANK FAULKNER Joseph Frank Faulkner was the son of Joseph Faulkner and Mary Isabel Plant.

He was born in October 1921 in Dartington, Cheshire. His last known address was Worthington Avenue, Partington in Trafford. Joseph had 5 brothers: Kenneth, George, Cyril, Harry and Jack and 1 sister, Mary. JCCC’s initial family research suggests that some of the descendants from these siblings could still be living in the Manchester area.

FUSILIER WALTER VICKERS Walter Vickers was the son of Walter Vickers and Maggie Straker. He was born in April 1921 in Rusholme, Manchester.

His last known address was listed as Boynton Road, Rusholme. We believe from our initial research that Walter had 3 brothers and 3 sisters: Bernard, James, Geoffrey, Nita, Lorna and Elva. Once again, the JCCC believe that the descendants of these siblings could still be living in the Manchester area.

Now an appeal has been launched by the MOD’s JCCC to track down either of

these men’s surviving male relatives so that they can be invited to undertake a DNA test to prove whether the remains are theirs. If positive identifications can be made, they will be given a full military burial in Italy with a named headstone.

Nicola Nash from the JCCC said: I am really hoping that family members of these 2 brave men will see this appeal and agree to help us. If anyone thinks they may have some information, then please get in contact so that we can try and identify this soldier that has been found.

NATIONAL CHAIR TO ATTEND ARMED FORCES DAY IN ORIHUELA

AM DELIGHTED to say that the new National Chairperson, Una Cleminson, will be attending the Armed Forces Day Service at Orihuela Cathedral on 29 June.

I

It is extremely gratifying to note that this will be the very first major overseas event attended by Una and, as such, we are so pleased that she has chosen Spain District North in which to do so. Very much a feather in the cap for us all.

It is therefore imperative that all District Branches make an effort to ensure that it is a successful day, which means us all attending in good numbers.

First observed in 2006, Armed Forces Day in the United Kingdom is an annual event to commemorate the service of men and women in the British Armed Forces. Here in Spain we hope that the 2019 event will be celebrated by representatives from all security forces and veterans, including the Irish Services and the Guardia Civil, National and Local Police, in order to raise awareness and appreciation of the sacrifices that have been, and are still being made, all over the world, especially by those who are currently on active duty.

As well as Una Cleminson there will be 4 Chelsea Pensioners, led by former RMP (SIB) WO1, Wayne Campbell, who are all flying over especially from the Royal Hospital.

The event itself will take the form of a short parade, led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, which will start at the Tourist Information Office at 5.15, followed by a service in the Cathedral conducted by District Chaplain Pastor Keith Brown and the Dean.

The parade will be the first opportunity for us to see Jack Kemp, the new District Parade Marshall in action, as he puts the Branch Standard Bearers through their paces.

Music will be provided by The Royal British Legion Concert Band in Spain, led by David Last, with choral accompaniment from the Crescendo International Choir.

This year we hope to have former BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Philharmonic Orchestra member, Sam Arthur, who is also a member of the RBL Band, playing the Cathedral organ.

Local Entertainer Stevie Spit and Professional Opera Singer Valerie Lynch will also be singing during the service.

Local dignitaries attending the event will include mayors and councillors from across the region as well as the Military AttachĂŠ from Madrid and representatives of the British Consul.

On conclusion of the service a reception will be held in the Cathedral cloisters where nibbles can be enjoyed accompanied by music from the Singers of La PasiĂłn de Orihuela.

Danny and the amazing Voltio Voltio helping Danny to undress Danny paid his second visit in recent months to The Royal British Legion. On this occasion he was visiting the Orihuela Costa and District where he was keen to show off his much acclaimed assistance dog Voltio, a 7 year old brown labrador.

It’s fair to say that the demonstration was met by members with some misgivings but within just a few seconds, rather than Voltio, it was the branch members that were eating out of his hands.

Voltio was able to demonstrate an amazing range of obedience and skills including, switching on lights, removing items from drawers, as well as opening the fridge door and helping his master to undress.

Danny trains dogs to assist those with mobility problems and, for over half an hour, Legion members were “spell bound” by the different ways Voltio was able to provide his help. Danny told us that Spain is one of the few countries which give assistance dogs free to those in need, which is a really vital service.

Danny also trains guide dogs for the blind through Ocio, rescue and sniffer dogs, as well as dogs such as Voltio who provide assistance to those who are less able or suffering from a disability.

As well as providing training above Danny works at the Hondon Valley Animal Rescue (HOVAR), a charity that is always in need of assistance. The centre has a charity shop in Calle Neuva, Hondón de las Nieves, which accepts gifts and donations that will help in providing a better life for the animals at the centre.

The Orihuela Costa Branch meets at the Olympia restaurant, Mil Palmeras, on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7.00 for 7.30pm. The branch enjoys many social functions, and everyone is welcome.

Hondón Valley Branch Legion commemorates “World Forest Day” At the March meeting of the Hondón Valley Branch, members heard from the President, Lt Col Pete Lodge MBE, on a variety of recent events involving Armed Forces personnel and veterans. He paid tribute to the Forces Wives Challenge raising money for The RBL. The ladies have been in Chile and after undergoing 10 days altitude acclimatisation training, they climbed Ojos del Salado, the highest volcano in the world at 6893 metres above sea level, to raise awareness of loneliness and isolation. He praised their courage and determination.

Members also heard from Peter Broadbent, a previous Branch President, whose humorous reminiscences revolved around the magazine Campo he started in 2001. One item that caused much mirth was the following “Beverley, the 6 year old daughter of friends, was asked where her grandparents lived. She replied ‘They live at the airport.

When we want them, we pick them up. When we’ve finished with them we take them back to the airport.’ “

Torrevieja Poppy Support from Iceland

erry Lynch the Chairman of the Torrevieja Branch of the Royal British Legion, met with the Manager of the Iceland Store in Torrevieja, Mr James Lound.

During the period at Iceland last October/November, the Branch raised over Euros 4000 for the Torrevieja 2018 Poppy Appeal.

This was the highest amount ever raised.

Gerry thanked the manager for allowing the Legion to exhibit their Poppies and receive donations for Poppy merchandise at his store. He also thanked the staff for their congenial and helpful attitude throughout the two week period.

The Manager has very kindly accepted an application from the Legion attend the Iceland Store later this year.

In March last year, the Branch remembered World Poetry Day and were delighted when a number of members wrote some amazing poems. This year, however, we commemorated “World Forest Day” and members took part in a quiz testing their knowledge of the rain forest, its inhabitants and flora and fauna. In April members will be showing their creative skills when they compete for the “best decorated egg” and the Easter Bonnet competition.

Hondón Valley TRBL – Easter Branch Meeting Members arrived at the April Branch meeting armed with their decorated eggs and “extravagant” hats. Competition was fierce with the overall winner being Sylvia Stewart.

The Chairman, Neil, produced an “Egg Head! Quiz – well up to his usual standard and with prizes and a raffle with an Easter theme, many members took home chocolate eggs and biscuits.

The Branch meet on the second Tuesday of each month and plans are well advanced for the Summer Party in June.
