MESSAGE FROM THE CITY COUNCIL

It is especially important to keep children moving during the winter months. They have enjoyed outdoor activities throughout summer and fall, and may revert to a period of idleness in the dark days of winter. As a nation, we have come to recognize that childhood obesity is a fast growing public-health crisis. Childhood obesity has been linked to serious medical conditions, including diabetes and heart disease. Fortunately, childhood obesity is often preventable. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, lifestyle habits, including healthy eating and physical activity, can lower a child’s risk of becoming obese. Children in Daly City have many opportunities to engage in afterschool activities and recreational sports — if you can get them away from the TV and videogames. Daly City’s Youth Baseball League is perfect for kids from kindergarten through 8th grade. Sign-ups for youth baseball start December 3 (see page 24). A little more than a year ago, the City Council unanimously approved a resolution adopting Daly City’s first-ever Citywide Wellness Policy. The motivation for adopting such a

policy was multi-faceted. As Daly City’s elected leaders, we wanted to be among the first cities in California to make a commitment to supporting the overall wellness of our community. We want to continue to provide opportunities for Daly City residents to make healthy lifestyle decisions. Through the Department of Library and Recreation Services, residents of all ages have the potential to pursue activities that will keep them active and healthy. In addition to the many classes related to physical fitness, the City also offers nutritious, healthy lunch programs Monday through Friday at the Doelger Senior Center and Lincoln Community Center. Families in need are also encouraged to take advantage of the food distribution programs offered throughout Daly City, including the Second Harvest Produce Mobile available the second and fourth Monday of each month at the Community Service Center, 350 90th Street (across the street from City Hall). If you need more information about food distribution programs, call the Community Service Center at (650) 991 – 8007.

Community News

As the days grow shorter and the nights get colder, it is tempting to find a warm, cozy place to hunker down for winter. In the animal kingdom, some species have already settled in for their winter-long slumber. In Daly City, there is no need to hibernate — winter is action packed with plenty of lively activities to keep us healthy through the holidays and into the New Year. The City’s Department of Library and Recreation Services offers a wide variety of classes, activities, and special events for all ages. Whether you choose to swim in the comfort of the great indoors at Giamonna Pool, or burn calories dancing, the opportunities to keep moving through the season are nearly limitless. You won’t find a class in channel surfing or power napping at your neighborhood community center, but there are plenty of classes to keep you fit — from slow paced, perspiration-free movement focused sessions, to full speed aerobic, sweat-inducing workouts.

The heart and soul of a healthy community can often be found in the volunteers who selflessly give their time and energy to support causes that help those in need. If you are looking for an opportunity to support a worthy cause this holiday season, look no further than Daly City’s Operation Santa Claus. The community-supported program is celebrating its 64th year of making the holiday season brighter for the less fortunate in the Daly City, Broadmoor, and Colma communities. You can help by donating a new, unwrapped toy at the Operation Santa Claus kiosk at Serramonte Shopping Center. If you would like to make a monetary donation, or are interested in wrapping or delivering gifts for children in our community, contact the North County Fire Authority administrative offices by calling (650) 991 – 8138. Have a safe and happy holiday season, and a joyous New Year!

Adults age 18-50 are ineligible for the Scholarship Program. • Youth programs qualified for scholarships are limited to: youth athletic leagues, youth aquatic classes and the Youth Recreation Program. • Active adult programs qualified for scholarships would be limited to: classes which facilitate physical movement. • Program areas not eligible for scholarships would include: library services, tiny tot classes, tennis lessons, camps, trips and excursions, facility and pool-party rentals, drop-in classes, all classes and programs serving adults age 18-50 years of age and classes $10 and under.
