MESSAGE FROM THE CITY COUNCIL - FALL 2013

While the summer was filled with celebrations, this fall the City Council will be hard at work grappling with Daly City’s ongoing financial woes. In the coming months the Council and City staff will be conducting an assessment of municipal operations in an effort to increase efficiencies and reduce costs. The past five years have been among the most difficult economic periods in Daly City’s history dating back to the Great Depression. Although we are optimistic that the City’s top two revenue sources – property tax and sales tax – will increase modestly over the next couple of years, revenue is not expected to keep pace with ongoing expenditures. The City Council’s biggest challenge is finding ways to position Daly City for a financially sustainable future. Unfortunately, one of the by products of budget cuts is a reduction in services. Although essential government services, such as public safety and the delivery of clean drinking water are not at risk for drastic cuts, other

operational areas of the City may be adversely affected to varying degrees. As we navigate through this difficult time, we encourage you to actively engage in making your community a better place in which to live, work, and play. Daly City’s greatest asset has always been its residents. Whether you volunteer at your local school or church, or assist a friend or neighbor in need with groceries, you are making a difference in Daly City. It is in the spirit of helping others that we encourage you to volunteer for Make a Difference Day on Saturday, October 26. This year we celebrate Daly City’s fifteenth consecutive year of organizing Make a Difference Day. Known as the “National Day of Doing Good,” Make a Difference Day presents an opportunity for residents to volunteer in a variety of projects throughout the City. Make a Difference Day remains the single largest volunteer event of the year in Daly City and throughout the United States. Make sure you are part of it!

Community News

The City Council had the privilege of dedicating Centennial Plaza at Daly City’s historic Top of the Hill this summer, marking the culmination of one of the City’s largest public works projects in recent years. Centennial Plaza, located on the northwest corner of John Daly Blvd. and Mission Street, commemorates the City’s first one hundred years. The distinct pergola structure that shelters waiting bus riders is situated at the confluence of what were once the properties of neighboring dairy ranchers John D. Daly and Israel G. Knowles. Today Knowles Avenue runs parallel to John Daly Blvd. from Mission Street east to Woodrow Street, roughly marking the former property boundaries of two of the area’s early settlers.

If you are interested in volunteering for Make a Difference Day, call (650) 991-8054 or visit www. dalycity.org/mdd2013 for registration instructions. Volunteers will report directly to pre-assigned work sites beginning at 9:00 a.m. the morning of the event. A “thank you” barbecue lunch for volunteers is scheduled for noon on the southwest plaza at City Hall courtesy of the Daly City Host Lions Club. The Lions Club will also host a free flu vaccination clinic in the rotunda at City Hall. And just as in years past, Make a Difference Day happens rain or shine. We hope to see you there!
